| Subject | 메탈리카를 여전히 현역이라 할 수 있을까? |
 ㄴ어쩌면 핵심요약일지도 모르는(...) 짤방이죠 메가데스나 아이언메이든과 같이 메탈리카와 함께 80, 90년대에 전성기를 보낸 이른바 '왕년에 잘나갔던' 밴드들이 최근에도 계속 정규앨범을 내는 이유는 무엇일까요? 분명 돈이나 벌자고 하는 짓은 분명 아닐겁니다. 창작에 들어가는 시간과 노력에 비해 얻는 것은 턱없이 적으니까요. 그럴 시간에 메탈리카처럼 투어 한번 더 도는게 훨씬 이득입니다. 막상 앨범을 내도 한물간 이들의 음반 혹은 음원 성적은 썩 좋지못하며 라이브에서도 그들의 최근 노래보단 전성기적 노래를 듣길 원하는 팬들이 압도적으로 많습니다. 최근 노래는 아예 들어 볼 생각조차 하지않는 라이트팬도 다수 존재하고 말이에요. 이런 별 유쾌하지 못한 상황에서도 이들이 꾸준히 음반을 내는 이유는 그저 '아티스트라면, 밴드라면 응당 그래야하니까' 라는 생각이 듭니다. 메탈리카가 더이상 창작에 대한 열정을 보이지않고 모험적 시도조차 멈춘지 오래 되었어요. 온갖 음악적 실험을 행하며 장르를 선도해나가던 그들이 이제는 현실에 안주한 채 대규모 투어만 돌게 된거죠. 더 이상 앞으로 나아가지않고 과거의 히트곡들만을 되풀이해도 큰 돈벌이가 되는 투어만 뛴다는 것은 저에게 있어 밴드로서의 생명력이 다 된 것이라고 받아들여집니다. 아 물론 추억팔이가 나쁜 것은 아니지만 그것만을 위해 존재하는 밴드가 정말 제대로 된 밴드이긴한건가? 라는 생각이 들어요. 저에게 있어 메탈리카는 진즉 끝나버린 안타까운 '과거의 명밴드'일 뿐이네요. 물론 제가 메탈리카보다 메가데스를 훨씬 좋아한다는 점은 부정하지 않겠지만 이 둘의 현 위치가 정반대였어도 전 메가데스에게 같은 말을 했을꺼에요. 최근에 좀 생각이 바뀐 케이스는 W.A.S.P.였는데요, 저한테 이 밴드는 LA 메탈 시절 티어2, AAA를 넘지 못한 미미한 밴드... 그 정도였거든요. 애초에 앨범도 빌려서 들었고 사지도 않은 밴드인데, 얼마 전에 유튜브에서 the idol을 부르는 걸 듣고 좀 충격을 받은 적이 있습니다. 노인네가 정말 수 십 년을 하나만 갈아서 내놓은 느낌이 나더군요. 제 기준에서 이 팀은 사실 90년대 초반에 죽은, 솔직히 말하자면 존재한 적도 없는 그런 밴드인데 저 영상을 듣고 나서는 약간의 경외심이 생겼습니다. 과연 이 팀이 active인가 아닌가를 내 기준에서 평가하는 것이 온당한가를 좀 다시 생각해보기도 했고요.
근데 뭐 뮤지션의 의지, 의욕, 음악적 임팩트, 씬 장악력 이런 것보다 중요한 건 결국 나한테 ongoing이냐 아니냐 아닐까 싶어요. 그 점에서 저는 잉베이가 96년에 죽었다는 말을 함에 있어 한 치의 부끄러움도 느끼지 않습니다(..)
