(아랫글은 2015년 8월 블로그 게시용으로 작성해두었던 글입니다. 읽어주신다면 가볍게 읽어주시면 감사하겠습니다.) ‘꽤 보수적이시네요’같은 말은 시비 걸 때 쓰기 딱 좋다. 달달 외는 영어면접소개용 멘트에선 ‘Open-minded'가 빠지는 법이 없다. 보수적이긴 굳이 마다하면서 개방적이긴 주저하지 않는다. 그런데도 섹스 코드엔 지독하게 닫혀 있다. 우리나라 사람들 얘기다. 섹스란 단어는 입에 머금기도 껄끄럽게, 대화 소재로 내뱉기는 아주 남세스럽게 생각한다. 올 초 <그레이의 50가지 그림자>란 영화가 있었다. 전 세계, 특히 북미에선 ‘센세이셔널’한 흥행 기록을 세우고(아바타, 어밴져스, 다크나이트의 오프닝 기록을 갈아치운 채) 이 땅에 상륙했다. 역시 기 한 번 못 써보고 시시하게 내려졌다. 애초에 원작 소설부터가 스토리나 캐릭터 위주가 아니었다. 섹스, 그것도 가학적인(결박, 지배, 사도마조히즘의) 섹스가 주인공이었다. 성적 판타지를 담아냈다. 로맨스의 구색으로서가 아니라 섹스 자체를 중심에 내건 주류 상업영화란 점에서 특별했다. 세계는 열광했다. 우리나라에선 욕만 먹었다. 하긴 정상적인 섹스도 ‘거리’가 못 되는데, 가당치 않았다. 영화만인가? 문학도 그렇다. 문학에서 섹스는, 죽음만큼이나 주요하다. 정말이지 세계문학에서 섹스코드가 빠진 작품은 드물다. 딱 떠올려 봐도 애들만 우르르 몰려다니는 <파리대왕>말고는 뭐, 딱히. 시작부터 끝까지 침침한 감옥골방이 배경인 <이방인>에도 깨알 같은 섹스씬이 나온다. 한 시대를 평정한 해리포터는 문학의 범주에 넣지 않는다. 안 그래도 판타지인데 섹스씬이 없으니까, 그저 판타지 장르소설일 뿐이다. 하루키 작품의 감칠맛은 섹스씬에서 폭발한다. 그냥 그런 책 팔아먹는 상업작가로 비하되던 하루키가 문단의 인정을 받게 된, 전환점이 된 작품 [태엽감는 새]는 무려 4권짜리 ‘야설’에 다름 아니다. 읽다 보면 꼴리지 않을 수 없다. 작품에 섹스씬이 등장하면, 일단 눈을 뗄 수 없다. 잠겨오던 눈이 번쩍 뜨인다. 우리의 문학계 역시 섹스 코드에 인색하다. 팔리는 작가들은 편법을 쓴다. 대놓고 섹스씬을 넣지 않지만 묘한 긴장감을 삽입한다. 공지영의 [우리들의 행복한 시간]에는 어릴 때 사촌오빠에게 강간당한 여주인공의 트라우마가, 신경숙의 [엄마를 부탁해]에는 혈기왕성한 삼촌의 핏발선 팔뚝을 바라보는 젊은 날의 엄마가 있다. 세계 시장에서 한국 문학이 안 팔리는 이유? 번역 탓만이 아닐지 모른다. 아. 우리나라에서도 안 팔리지. 아이러니한 건 그러면서도 어느 정도 섹스 코드를 버무리는 게 ‘쿨한 것’이란 미국식 공감대가 정착해있다는 점이다. 미국 엔터시장에서 실력 없이 뜨려면 섹스 스캔들이 필수다. 진짜 별 거 없는 킴 카다시안의 지금 입지(올해 타임지 선정 '세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 인물 100인‘에 꼽혔다)를 보라. 우리나라에서도 섹스 코드는 문화산업 전반에 스며있다. 요새 아이돌 노래가사야 말해 입 아프다. 이미 지난 세기에 나온 곡 <초대>에서 엄정화는 아슬아슬하고 아찔하게 그대와 단 둘이서 지샐 밤을 기다려왔더랬다. 신동엽의 한마디에 자지러지는 관중은 또 어떤가. 톰 포드나 캘빈 클라인의 캠페인이 공개되면 네이버 메인을 장식하고, 그걸 기어이 클릭해보는 우리는? 따져보면 우리나라만의 문젠 아니다. 옆 나라 일본도 그렇다. 섹스가 금기시된다. 그랬더니 만들어지는 포르노란 죄다 변태적이다. 남선생과 여고생이, 처제와 형부가 나뒹군다. 욕구가 억눌리다가 빗나간 꼴이다. 건강하고 건전한 섹스라면 오히려 도마 위로 모셔 와야 한다. 누구랑 문제 있다며, 섹스는 잘되고? 그런 물음이 이상하게 들리지 않아야 한다. 삶이 있다면 섹스는 있다. 그냥 없는 셈쳐둬선 안 된다.
