(<버드맨>에 대한 스포일러가 있습니다)  처음부터 <버드맨>을 볼 생각은 아니었습니다. 베개를 두 개 겹쳐 벽에 기대 누운 채 태블릿으로 <위플래쉬>를 틀어 놓고는 '듣던 바와 달리 좀 지루하군...' 딴 생각도 하면서 깜박 졸기도 하다가 막판의 반전에 헉 하고 잠이 깼어요. 이런 식으로 잠이 깬 영혼이 할 수 있는 일은 정해져 있습니다. 보던 영화를 다시 보든가, 다른 영화를 보는 거죠. 하지만 <위플래쉬>는 다시 볼 정도로 감정을 흔드는 영화는 아니었습니다. 그래서 자연스럽게 선택한 영화가 이 게시판에서도 몇 차례 언급되었던 <버드맨>이었습니다. 오프닝을 지나 3, 4분 가량이 흘렀을 때 베개에서 몸을 떼고 일어났습니다. 말도 안 되는 황당함을 느꼈죠. 포스터에 속았던 겁니다. 전형적인 초현실주의 아트필름인 척 잔뜩 폼을 잡은 흑백 사진에, 지상 30cm 정도 높이에 붕 떠 허공을 응시하는 주인공의 몽롱한 표정에. 그리고 <바벨> 같이 저급한 영화를 만들어 자신의 필모그라피를 망쳤던 이냐리투 감독에게. 무엇보다도, 흠 그놈이군, 세계는 모두 연결되어 있다 어쩌구 하면서 어설픈 연상 따위에 의존하는 포스트모더니스트놈, 더 볼 것도 없지... 하고 개봉 시점을 가볍게 지나쳤던 나 자신에게 화가 났죠. <지구를 지켜라> 포스터 이상으로 기만적인 <버드맨> 포스터는 제 기억 속에 영원한 흑역사로 남을 것 같아요. 누구든 어떤 영화를 보고 어떤 모종의 부름을 느꼈을 때 저절로 환기하게 되는 인생작이 있을 겁니다. 이 경우에 제게는 고 로버트 알트만의 <숏 컷>이었습니다. 알트만은 세계를 재현하는 도구로서 카메라의 존재의미를 살아 움직이는 수많은 인간 군상들을 평등하게 포착하는 데 두었습니다. 그 군상들 하나하나가 한정된 시간 내에서 저마다의 유의미한 생을 살아가도록 한다는 것이 어떤 것인가, 그들의 생이 그저 파편들의 짜집기가 아님을, 세계에 대한 공포와 적대를 잔뜩 품은 늑대 같은 젊은 내가 그저 혼자 시간을 낭비하다 끝나도록 운명지워진 게 아님을, 어떤 상황에서든 인간은 여전히 인간이며 그 이상도 이하도 아님을 그 어떤 사이비 희망이나 초월성에 의존하지 않고도 확신한다는 것이 어떻게 가능한가. 위대한 영화를 만난다는 것은 그런 가능성의 일별이라고, 20대에 돌연히 조우한 알트만은 내게 말하는 것 같았습니다. 소위 '예술영화'라는 것은 제의와 훈련을 거쳐 뽑힌 특정한 서클 구성원들만이 이해할 수 있는 비의가 아니라는 것을, 저급한 해상도의 비디오 화면과 조악한 자막으로 알트만의 영화들을 보면서 알았습니다. (물론 보다가 잠이 든 날도 있지요 당연히...) 알트만은 영화 속에서 끊임없이 스스로 갈라지는 오솔길을 만들어 수많은 인간 군상들로 하여금 그 속에서 헤매도록 내버려둔 채 지켜봅니다. 그는 렌즈를 들이대고 피사체의 온갖 치부를 확대 재생산하는 파파라치도 아니고 인물에게 제대로 된 루트를 가르쳐주고 싶어 안달이 난 여행가이드도 아닙니다. 드높은 천상에서 이 세상을 한눈에 내려다보며 될놈될을 논하는 신도 아닙니다. 그의 시선-관객에게 제시되는 시선-은 딱 한 발짝 뒤에서 인물을 따라가는 시니컬한 당나귀 같습니다. 황금 당나귀처럼, 환생을 거듭해 이 세상의 진리를 주인보다 잘 알고 있으면서도 주인이 끄는 대로 발걸음을 옮길 수밖에 없는 과묵한 동물 말입니다. 주인보다 넓은 시야를 지녀 주인이 보는 것보다 좀더 많은 것을 한번에 볼 수 있지만 입밖으로 말을 꺼낼 수 없는 이 당나귀는 주인이 어디로 갈지, 주인의 다음 행동이 무엇일지 결코 예측할 수 없습니다. 알트만의 무수한 서브플롯들은 돌연변이로 생을 이어가는 유전자들처럼 목적 없이 진화합니다. 그들에게는 정해진 운명이나 종착점이 없고, 그 지점을 어렴풋이 가리키는 상징만이 주어집니다. <숏 컷>의 경우 영화 시작 부분의 파리떼 습격, 영화 후반부의 LA를 강타한 지진이 그것입니다. 이 묵시록적인 천재지변들은 LA 주민 22명 각각의 운명에 터무니없을 만큼 세심하게 관여하지만 내러티브상으로 그들을 단죄하거나 상찬하지는 않습니다. '너희들은 모두 나를(나의 계시를) 보았다, 그럼에도 변함이 없구나, 어쩔 수 없지, 그럼 뭐... 안녕.' 하고 떠날 뿐입니다. 활짝 열린 결말은 희망도 절망도 아닌 어떤 미지의 지점에 당나귀가(관객들이) 터벅터벅 도달하기를 기다리고 있습니다. 그리고 나는 아직 보지 못한 알트만의 다른 영화들이 나를 기다리고 있다는 것을 축복으로 여기며 살아갑니다. 모든 영화가 똑같은 패턴의 변주에 불과해 보이는 오즈 야스지로나 홍상수의 영화가 사람들을 매혹시키는 것은 그렇게 영원히 지연되며 반복되는 축복 때문입니다. <버드맨 또는 무지라는 예기치 않은 미덕>은 마치 <숏 컷>에 바치는 은근한 오마주처럼, 20세기 하반기 미국 문창과 소설을 대표하는 레이먼드 카버를 영화 속으로 끌어왔습니다. <숏 컷>이 카버의 단편들 몇 개의 플롯을 뽑아와 새로이 재구성해 영화언어로 '번역'하고 그 결과 원작의 존재를 상상할 수조차 없는 완전히 다른 차원의 걸작을 만들어 냈다면, <버드맨>은 카버의 원작에 대한 연극적 메타, 그 연극적 메타에 대한 영화적 메타를 겹겹이 쌓아가는 과정 속에서 서서히 카버를 '순장'시켜 버립니다. (솔직히 저는 이 두 영화를 보고 나서 카버의 원작을 읽어보고 싶다는 생각이 조금도 들지 않았습니다.) 두 감독은 자기 나름의 방식으로 카버와 싸우고 그를 살해한 셈입니다. 알트만이 그랬듯이 독서에서 자신의 판독, 의문, 오판, 해석이 이루어진 과정을 공개하지 않고 결론만을 공유하는 것은 원작을 살해하는 한 가지 방법이죠(물론 많은 2류 평론가들은 그런 식으로 예술작품을 개죽음시키곤 합니다). <버드맨>의 경우, 감독은 카버를 끊임없이 존경의 레퍼런스로 삼으면서도 주인공 리건(마이클 키튼)이 수십 년간 소중한 추억으로 간직해온 카버의 냅킨이 무가치하게 내팽개쳐지도록 함으로써 이 명성 높은 작가의 팬들을 도발하기까지 합니다. 그렇다면 <버드맨>이 극장의 군상을 다루는 방식은 어떤가요. 실로 빼어나다고 할 수 있는데, 알트만이 최상의 기량에 이르렀을 때 보여주었던 솜씨와도 비교할 만합니다. 그러나 <버드맨>은 알트만의 자장 안에 위치하면서도 완전히 다른 길을 가고 있습니다. 이냐리투 감독이 <바벨>에서 보여주었던 유사 알트만 기법, 수많은 군상들을 따라가며 '이 세상은 연결되어 있음'을 보여주고 싶었지만 그들을 일거에 하나의 평평한 차원 위로 올려놓는 강력한 힘이 없기에 저급하고 산만해 보였던 그 기법은 <버드맨>에 와서 완벽하게 자기에게 맞는 집중된 형식을 찾은 것 같습니다. 영화 초반, 비좁은 극장 건물 안에서 끊임없이 서로 부딪히고 회피하고 의심하고 증오하는 극단 관계자들의 모습과 다채로운 서브플롯들은 알트만의 스케일과 비교하면 소박하지만 솜씨 좋게 축소 집약한 세계의 모형입니다. 끊어지지 않고 두 시간 동안 이어지는 스테디캠 롱테이크라는 엄청난, 솔직히 말하면 과도한 테크닉은 이 카메라 시점의 주인인 리건(마이클 키튼)의 머릿속에 달랑달랑 매달린 신경쇠약 직전의 뉴런이 아직 유기물로서 생명을 유지하고 있음을 증명하는 물증이기에 힘을 얻습니다. 그렇지 않고 그저 '이 세상은 연결되어 있다'는 관념의 유희만으로는 이 롱테이크는 허무했을 것입니다. 알트만도 롱테이크의 대가이긴 했지만 그는 '롱테이크로 세상을 품겠다'는 기술적 야심을 가지고 있지는 않았습니다. 이냐리투의 형식미에 대한 도전정신은 <버드맨>에게 한편으로 엄청난 성공을 가져왔지만 그 형식의 한계로 인해 이야기의 한계에 갇혀버리기도 합니다. 모든 것이 연결되어 있고 상징은 그 연결고리 속에서만 의미를 가져야 하기 때문에 낮은 난이도의 무난한 상징, 쉽사리 추측 가능한 비유들만이 가능합니다. 인물은 그 한계에서 벗어날 수 없습니다. 알트만에서라면 달랐겠지만 <버드맨>에서 우리는 영화 맨 처음부터 리건이 죽게 되리라는 것을 무심코 압니다. 하늘에서 떨어지는 날개 달린 천사 같은 불덩이, 폐소공포증마저 불러일으키는 좁은 복도와 드럼 소리, 죽음의 소리와 같은 버드맨의 속삭임, 이세계의 힘이 침입해 온 것 같은 리건의 초능력. 만일 알트만이나 그의 수제자 폴 토마스 앤더슨의 영화였다면, 그 불덩이의 의미는 영화가 끝나도록 결국 알지 못하는 영역으로 남았겠지요. <버드맨>은 '자신의 존재이유를 증명하기 위해 고통받는 예술가의 이야기'로 흔히 요약됩니다만, 실제로 주인공 리건의 '예술가성'을 증명할 수 있는 실마리는 어디에도 없습니다. 그를 추동하는 것은 예술의 이데아와의 대결이 아니라 타인들의 인정이고, 그의 내면은 음험하고 우스꽝스러운 버드맨에 사로잡혀 있습니다. 그의 창작이나 연기 실력은 객관적인 시선으로 볼 때 별볼일 없음이 이미 증명되어 있습니다. 리건이 쓴 대사는 마이크 샤이너(에드워드 노튼)의 노련한 안목에 의해 네 줄에서 한 줄로 단칼에 잘려나갑니다. 리건의 안목은 삼류 배우의 연기를 평가할 정도는 되지만 샤이너의 능력을 품을 정도는 아닙니다(첫 만남의 일대일 대사치기에서 리건은 샤이너에게 쩔쩔 맵니다). 평론가 타비타 디킨슨(린제이 던컨)은 아예 극을 보지도 않고서 '다른 좋은 연극이 설 자리를 빼앗았다'며 폄하합니다. 리건이 자신의 가치를 증명할 길은 단 한 가지뿐입니다. 그것은 자신을 파괴하는 길, 그럼으로써 자신의 무가치함도 함께 파괴하여 가치 있는 타인들에게 그 자리를 내어주는 길입니다. 그렇게 보면 <버드맨>은 제목 그대로 죽음을 택함으로써 우연히 '예기치 못한 미덕'을 이룬 한 예술가의 이야기입니다. 오프닝에 나오는 카버의 시 '이번 생에서 당신이 원하는 것을 얻었나요?'는 그 희생을 기리는 묘비명이지요. 리건에게는 극장 바깥의 세계가 죽음과 비현실의 공간입니다. 영화 속에서 리건은 자신의 생명줄을 지키려는 듯 악착같이 극장 안에 머물러 있었고, 가장 멀리 갔던 한계선은 극장에서 몇 발짝 떨어지지 않은 술집이었습니다. 외부와의 소통은 딸인 샘(에마 스톤)에게 전적으로 맡겨져 있었고, 그래서 그는 내내 싫어하는 장미를 배달받을 수밖에 없었죠. 극장 밖은 자기가 아는 모든 재능 있는 배우들이 망토를 입고 히어로물에 출연하느라 바쁜, 시대에 뒤떨어진 리건이 보기에 말도 안 되는 그로테스크한 세계입니다. 프리뷰 공연 중간에 담배를 피우러 나온 사이 대기실 문이 잠기고 가운 자락이 문간에 끼는 바람에 알몸이 되어 걷는 초라하고 늙은 그를, 군악대는 벌거벗은 임금님처럼 배웅하고 군중들은 놀랄 만큼 쉽게 알아보고 이름을 불러대고 폰을 갖다댑니다. 비현실의 극치죠. 그런데 정작 극장에 도착했을 때는 건물 안의 매표원도 안내원도 그를 알아보지 못합니다. 샘은 그의 삶이 가짜이며 의미 없다고 생각하지만 리건은 어쨌건 무대와 분장실, 협소한 복도 안에서 현실과 부딪히며 살아 있습니다. 샘의 말대로 '무려 60년 전의 작품을 각색한 늙은 백인 부자들을 위한 연극'을 하고 있긴 하지만 말이죠. <버드맨>에서 리건은 세 번의 죽음을 - 즉 극장 밖의 세계를, 자신을 살아 있게 만드는 유일한 끈인 연극과 무관한 세계를 - 선택합니다. 첫번째는 디킨슨과의 쓰라린 대화 후 길거리로 나와 놀라운 기량으로 맥베스를 암송하는 아마추어 연기자를 만나 또 한번의 절망을 느끼며 밤을 보낸 뒤, 영화상 처음으로 대낮에 극장 바깥에 머물게 되고, 버드맨의 유혹에 넘어가 건물 옥상으로 올라가서 뛰어내렸을 때입니다. 리건의 알터에고인 버드맨은 작중에서 끊임없이 리건의 에고를 조롱하며 과거의 영광을 환기시키고 그때로 돌아가자고 말합니다. 어떻게 돌아갈까?
