 한국에서는 1월 7일에 개봉한다고 하는 영화, 쿠엔틴 타란티노의 신작 "The Hateful 8"입니다. 이 영화에 대해서 이미 알고 계신 분들이라면, 아마도 타란티노의 영화를 이미 한 번쯤 본 분들일 것이고, 그렇다면 높은 확률로 타란티노 팬이시겠죠. 그런 분들은 제가 혹평을 하든 호평을 하든 어차피 이 영화를 보실 것이기 때문에 자세한 설명을 생략합니다. 이번에도 시끄럽고, 이번에도 재밌고, 이번에도 세 시간입니다! 타란티노의 영화를 본 적 없는 분들을 위해, 간략하게 얼개를 적어봅니다. ----------------------------------------------------- 국가에 의한 폭력의 독점은, 언제나 중요한 화두입니다. '폭력권'을 정부가 모두 가짐으로써 개인이 선할 수 있고, 자유롭게 경제활동을 할 수 있다고 보는 사람들이 있는 반면에, 개인에게 스스로를 지킬 수 있는 권리를 남겨주는 것이 옳다고 보는 사람들도 있지요. 2010년대의 한국이 전자가 상대적으로 잘 이루어지는 국가라면, 남북전쟁 직후, 1860년대의 미국은 원해서든 원치 않아서든 후자에 가깝습니다. 갱단, 현상금 사냥꾼, 보안관, 카우보이, 퇴역군인, 사형집행인까지 거친 녀석들이 우글우글하죠. 어느 날 이 불한당들이 와이오밍의 거친 눈보라를 피해, 따뜻하고 맛있는 스튜가 있는 "미니의 잡화점"에 모여듭니다. 그나마 존재하는 공권력의 손길조차 끊어진 눈 속 산장에서는, 모두 마찰없이 조용하게 지내는 것이 상책이겠지만... 그럴 리 없겠죠. 산장의 8인 모두가 모두를 경계하고 의심하고 있는 상황의 팽팽한 긴장감의 화약고에, 누군가 불씨를 던집니다. ----------------------------------------------------- 모두들 보셨으면 좋겠고, 남녀노소 모두가 봐야 할 영화이지만, 그 중에서도 이런 분들은 꼭 보시라고 권하고 싶네요. 1. "Violence Solves Everything." - 느와르 애호가 '저수지의 개들,' '킬 빌,' '바스터즈: 거친 녀석들,' '장고: 분노의 추적자'가 그랬듯이 이번에도 유혈이 낭자한 영화입니다. 다만, 피로한 폭력은 아니고 즐거운 폭력입니다. '황해'보다는 '킹스맨'에 가깝달까요. 그렇지만 나는 스테이크에서 배어나오는 핏물도 싫다!하시는 분들은 마음의 준비를 단단히 하시고 출구에서 가까운 자리를 예매하시구요. 2. "밤이 되었습니다. 마피아들은 고개를 들고 서로를 확인해 주세요." - 보드게임, 추리소설 마니아 잘 모르는 사람들끼리 마피아게임을 하면, 첫 날이 가장 곤혹스럽습니다. 단서가 너무 없어서 누구를 의심하는 것도 불가능한데, 누군가는 마피아고, 누군가를 죽여야 하죠. 하지만 타란티노는, 다분히 연극적인 문법 안에서 독특한 대사들로 인물들을 완벽하게 묘사해냅니다. 모두가 너무나도 의심스러워서, 즐거운 마피아게임이 펼쳐질 수 있게 말이죠. 3. "간지란 있는 자가 없는 자를 이길 수 있는 유일한 무기." - 패션왕 최근들어 대세였던 아메리칸 패션의 다양한 베리에이션들이 눈보라 속에서 빛납니다. 밀리터리룩의 대가인 퇴역군인, 맵시있는 클래식 양복을 잘 차려입은 사형집행인에서, 마초적인 '아메카지' 매력을 뽐내는 현상금 사냥꾼과 가장 현대적인 느낌의 마부까지. 푸르고 검은 느낌이 지배하는 배경과 닳고 닳은 페코스 부츠, 캠핑에 좋을법한 나바호 담요 안에서 그들은 하나가 됩니다. -------------------------------------------------------- 새해의 시작을 타란티노와 함께 하시길 기원합니다!
