올해도 게을러 스스로 읽은 책이 얼마 없기에, 남들이 읽은 책들을 가지고 이야기를 해보겠습니다. 미스코리아는 7월, 연말정산은 1월입니다. 하지만 출판계는 정직하게 12월에 결산하는군요. 언론사마다 으레 '올해의 책'을 뽑아 싣습니다. 어이, 늦기 전에 사라!는 신호입니다. '겨울방학이군, 한 권 읽어볼까..' 사실 읽을 시간도 돈도 없는 독자들의 망상에 군불을 지피려는 가난한 책장수들과 기자들의 공모...는 아니겠죠. 어쨌건 한 해를 마감하며 한겨레, 경향, 조선, 중앙, 한국일보 5개 언론사 북섹션에서 선정한 '올해의 책'들 가운데 2곳 이상 겹치는 책들을 따로 모으고 수다를 좀 떨어 보았습니다. (시사인 북섹션도 볼 만합니다만 아직 인터넷판이 뜨지 않은 관계로.. 내맘대로 생략합니다.) 최종 선정작들만 가지고 하면 너무 단조로우므로 후보작들이 공개된 경우 그것들도 계산에 넣었습니다. 왜 저걸 안 뽑지 싶을 정도로 아까운 후보작들이 탈락하는 경우들이 있습니다. 심사위원의 취향이 강하게 작용하는 탓도 있고 출판사별 안배 때문인 경우도 있습니다. 한 출판사에서 좋은 책 두 권을 한꺼번에 출품했을 경우 둘 다 뽑아주면 다른 출판사들에게 민망하니까요. 차라리 과학이면 과학 인문이면 인문, 같은 분야에서 두 책이 경합하는 경우라면 공동 선정을 해버리는 수도 있습니다. 그러나 각 언론사별로 뽑은 올해의 책 리스트를 보시면, 한 출판사 책이 두 권 들어가는 경우는 결코 없다는 사실을 알 수 있습니다. 위 5개 언론사 중 한국일보는 좀 급이 다릅니다. 여기서는 '한국출판문화상'(또는 백상출판문화상)이라는, 1960년부터 시작된 유구한 역사를 가진 상을 줍니다. 심사 기간도 길고 엄격하며 지면도 크게 할애해서 보도합니다. 이 상을 받는다는 것은 출판사와 저자/번역자에게 큰 영예와 격려입니다만 베스트셀러와 연결되는 경우는 많지 않습니다. 어차피 언론사 북섹션이나 광고가 실 판매부수에 결정적 영향력을 행사하던 시대는 이미 지났지요. 인터넷 서점 MD들, 출판사 영업팀의 SNS, 출판사별 커뮤니티 카페, 바이럴 마케팅 알바 등 책 마케팅의 함수는 점점 복잡해지고 있습니다. 그럼에도 긴가민가하는 상황에선 전통적인 언론매체(출판기자)의 평가를 참고하지 않을 수 없습니다. 각 언론사의 리스트 특징에 대해서는 후반부에 간략히 써볼까 합니다. 이제 어떤 책들이 '올해의 책'으로 꼽혔는지 알아보겠습니다. 1. 어떻게 죽을 것인가: 현대 의학이 놓치고 있는 삶의 마지막 순간 (아톨 가완디, 부키)  아래에 하지현 정신과 전문의의 평을 퍼왔습니다. 저는 읽어보지 못했네요. 베스트셀러이고, 의료넷이니만치 읽어보신 분들이 있으리라 생각합니다. 아툴 가완디는 한국에는 이미 <나는 고백한다 현대의학을>(동녘사이언스 2003)로 소개되어 있는 저자입니다. 나이 드신 부모님이나 친지를 둔 사람들이 읽어보고 서로 권한다고 하네요. 죽음에 대한 다양한 담론들이 좀더 대담하게 노출되는 것은 바람직한 현상일 것입니다. 다만 죽음을 잘 준비하고 싶은 사람들의 간절한 마음이 올해 메르스, 작년 세월호로 철저하게 배신당한 것은 아이러니합니다. [... 65세 이상 노인자살률은 1990년 이후 14.3명에서 69.8명으로 4.9배 증가했다. 언제 끝날지 모를 의존적 노인의 삶을 견뎌낼 의지를 갖지 못한 것이다. 그런 문제의식에서 아툴 가완디의 『어떻게 죽을 것인가』는 올 한해 가장 시사하는 바가 큰 책이었다. 외과의사이자 미국 유력 주간지 뉴요커의 칼럼니스트인 저자는 자신의 처할머니와 아버지가 늙어가면서 서서히 독립성을 잃고 죽음을 맞이하는 과정을 바라보면서 미국의 노인정책과 요양시스템을 취재했다...] [그는 중요한 것은 생명연장이 아니라 삶의 마지막 단계를 자신이 제어하고 있다는 통제감이고 이를 통해 마지막까지 ‘좋은 삶’을 살 수 있어야 한다고 말한다. 이제 현대인에게는 잘 사는 기술뿐 아니라 죽는 기술(ars moriendi)이 필요함을 의사의 전문성과 개인적 경험, 그리고 칼럼니스트의 필력을 합쳐 제안하고 있다. 저 멀리 있는 것 같지만 언제 내 눈앞에 닥칠지 모르는 늙음과 죽음을 마음 안에 현실적으로 담아둘 준비를 위해 이 책은 충분한 가치가 있다.] http://news.joins.com/article/19307221 조선, 중앙, 한겨레 올해의 책 선정작이고 한국일보 번역부문 후보 리스트에 올라 총 4곳에서 지명을 받았습니다. 산술적으로 1위. 2. 공동 2위 4권입니다. 빅 히스토리, 페미니즘, 세월호 사피엔스: 유인원에서 사이보그까지, 인간 역사의 대담하고 위대한 질문 (유발 하라리, 김영사)  올해 11월 말에 출간된 따끈따끈한 책이 무서운 기세로 치고 올라왔습니다. 한국일보에서 후보작들을 전해 11월부터 당해 10월 출판 도서로 제한하고 있는 바람에 한국출판문화상 리스트에는 올라가지 못했습니다. 그것만 아니면 가완디의 책을 제치고 명실상부한 1위를 차지했을 만한 책입니다. (특이하게도 조선일보 리스트에서도 제외되었는데, 그건 아마 조선일보 선정위원들 중에 김영사 대표가 빠져 있는데다 김영사가 다른 출판사들과 사이가 안 좋아서..?) 저도 지인에게 검토를 부탁받고 읽어보았는데 그야말로 한번 잡으면 손에서 놓기 힘듭니다. 중고등학교 세계사 교과서를 읽으면서 가졌던 법한 의문들, 너무 단순하고 기초적인 의문이라서 그 누구한테도 물어보기 힘든 의문들을 저자가 먼저 콕콕 집어서 친절하게 설명해줍니다. 빅히스토리 류의 책들에서 종종 볼 수 있듯이 제레드 다이아몬드의 추천사를 달고 나왔습니다. 다이아몬드(총균쇠), 도킨스(밈), 니얼 퍼거슨(제국), 스티븐 핑커(우리 본성의 선한 천사), 레이 커즈와일(특이점이 온다)을 잘 짬뽕해 놓은 책이랄까? 근래 독서계에서 '힙'한 요소들을 배합하는 솜씨가 굉장합니다. 저자인 유발 하라리는 원래 중세사를 전공한 역사학자이고 첫 책도 전쟁사 쪽입니다. <사피엔스>가 아니었으면 이스라엘의 한 대학에서 조용히 썩고 있었을 밀덕인 거죠. 인류의 태동부터 미래 세계까지 수백만 년의 역사를 단 400페이지(영문판 기준)에 마구 구겨넣다 보니 물론 비는 부분들이 많습니다. 특히 기독교에 대한 서술은 "이 양반 중세사 전공 맞아?" 할 정도로 얄팍하고 거칩니다. 가디언, 월스트리트 저널 등 해외 서평들을 몇 개 찾아봤는데 닥치고 찬양부터 책이 참 창렬하다는 악평까지 극단적입니다. "마 위키피디아 보고 쓴 거 같음요", "그래요 책을 쓰다 보면 오류는 당연히 있죠. 사자의 몸 위에는 이가 있기 마련이죠. 그래도 이새끼들 밑에 사자는 있어야 할 거 아님?" 글쎄, 제 생각에 사자가 있기는 있는 것 같아요. 털을 몽땅 깎아 놓으면 빈약한 사자이긴 합니다만, 꽤 잘 뛰어다니고 사냥 실력도 괜찮더군요. 저자의 아카데믹한 능력치를 확인하는 손쉬운 방법이 참고문헌을 훑어보는 것인데, 참고문헌이 없습니다. 친절한 참고문헌(저자에게 영감을 준 책들) 목록이 없는 것은 대중교양서로서도 큰 흠입니다. 원래 초보자의 독서는 처음 읽은 책의 참고문헌과 각주를 통해 넓혀 나가는 게 정석이니까요. 얼마 안 되는 각주도 중구난방으로, 있어야 할 각주가 없고 없어도 될 각주가 있는 경우가 많습니다. 히브리어에서 영어로 번역될 때 출판사(Harper)에서 왜 좀더 공을 안 들였는지 모르겠어요. 아마 이 책을 자기 학술논문에 인용할 정도로 용기 있는 연구자는 없을 것 같습니다. 그래도 김어준 류의 '무학의 통찰'은 아니에요. 춧천! 남자들은 자꾸 나를 가르치려 든다 (리베카 솔닛, 창비)  중앙, 조선에서 올해의 책으로 선정되고 한국일보 번역부문 후보에 올랐습니다. 한겨레와 경향에서는 이 책 대신 좀더 무게 있는 페미니즘 저서 <게일 루빈 선집>(현실문화)을 선택했습니다. 다들 아시다시피 '맨스플레인'이란 신조어를 한국에 상륙시킨 책이지요. 올해 이 말을 못 들어보신 분은 잘 없겠죠만 책도 읽어보셨을지. 저는 안 읽었습니다. 왠지 안 읽었어도 다 읽은 것 같은 착각이 듭니다. 맨스플레인은 꼰대 성향(파워스플레인)과 여성비하, 스피드웨건의 욕망이 한데 결합된 범주를 포착하는 단어입니다. 원사운드의 아래 만화를 보고 공감하신 분들은 일상적으로 맨스플레인을 경험하는 여성들에 대해 기초적인 공감의 토대가 있다고 보아야겠죠. 책 자체가 중요하다기보다는 수용자들이 적극적으로 생산해낸 반향이 워낙 컸고 올 한 해 국내 페미니즘 논쟁에서 하나의 좌표를 주는 참조 도서 정도로 이해하고 있습니다. 이 주제를 길게 쓰다가는 수렁에 빠질 각이 걱정되므로 짧게 마무리합니다...;; 금요일엔 돌아오렴 (4.16세월호참사기록위 작가기록단, 창비)  가슴 아픈 책입니다. 올해 봄에 책을 들췄다가 몇 페이지 못 보고 다시 덮은 기억이 나네요. 아이를 잃은 엄마가 언어로 일상을 표현한다는 것이 어떤 것인지 미처 몰랐습니다. 읽기만 해도 격렬한 제의에 참여하여 몽둥이로 두들겨 맞고 불 속으로 뛰어드는 것 같습니다. 이 책을 기획하고 인터뷰를 진행하고 책을 펴낸 분들에게 경의를 표합니다. 기록 : 고은채│김순천│명숙│미류│박현진│박희정│배경내│유해정│이호연│정미현│정주연│홍은전 만화 : 김보통│마영신│손문상│유승하│윤태호│조남준│최호철│홍승우 한국일보 편집 부문, 한겨레, 경향에서 선정작으로 뽑혔습니다. 김대식의 빅퀘스천: 우리 시대의 31가지 위대한 질문 (김대식, 동아시아)  조선일보 선정작이고, 중앙일보와 한국일보 저술 부문 후보 리스트에 올랐습니다. 이분에 대해서 잘 모릅니다. 괜찮은 저자일까요? 홍차넷 여러분께 묻고 싶습니다. (이런 식으로 넘어가지 마...퍽) 3. 공동 3위 올해의 책 리스트들을 보면 소설 품귀 현상이 심합니다. 아무도 소설을 안 읽나 봐요! 두 표를 얻은 책이 마션밖에 없어... 눈여겨 볼 여성 저자들이 점점 늘어나고 있어 기쁩니다. 이상희, 김현경은 앞으로 중요한 저자가 될 것 같아요. 올해의 번역자라 할 만한 분은 역시 여성인 김명남 씨입니다. <남자들은 자꾸 나를 가르치려 든다>, <생명에서 생명으로> 두 권이나 선정 리스트에 이름을 올렸어요. 이분 번역 속도와 퀄리티가 후덜덜하죠. 인류의 기원 (이상희, 윤신영, 사이언스북스) - 요건 읽어봤습니다. 강추! UCR 인류학과 이상희 교수와 과학동아 편집장 윤신영 씨가 합작했습니다. 와, 한국인 저자가 쓴 책 중에서 이렇게 대중성 만빵으로 재밌는 책은 <어메이징 그래비티> 이후 처음 읽어본 것 같아요. 가장 최신의 인류학계 성과를 초딩들도 읽을 수 있게 만들어 놓았습니다. 미움받을 용기 (기시미 이치로, 고가 후미타케, 인플루엔셜) 사람, 장소, 환대 (김현경, 문지) 일탈 : 게일 루빈 선집 (게일 루빈, 현실문화) 현앨리스와 그의 시대 (정병준, 돌베개) 마션 (앤디 위어, RHK) 담론: 신영복의 마지막 강의 (신영복, 돌베개) 작은 책방, 우리 책 쫌 팝니다!
