참 다사다난한 한 주였습니다. 몇 년만에 지독한 감기에 걸려서 운신하는 게 힘들었는데 일이 하나 터져서 육체고 정신이고 피폐해지더군요. 여자친구는 강아지 두 마리와 살고 있습니다. 이름 앞글자를 따서 큰 녀석을 Y, 작은 녀석을 K로 칭하겠습니다. 생일이 하루 차이랬나 아무튼 그야말로 동갑내기인데 덩치는 Y가 좀 크거든요. 한창 여자친구가 정신적으로 힘들 때 같이 살기 시작해서 삶에 많은 영향을 주는 녀석들이죠. 여자친구는 경제적으로 여유는 커녕 전전긍긍하는 편입니다만 이 녀석들에게는 돈을 아끼지 않더군요. 여튼 그렇게 애지중지하는 녀석들인데 Y가 갑자기 다리를 절기 시작했습니다. 개와 함께 살거나 지인이 개를 기른다면 귀에 못이 박히도록 들을 단어가 슬개골 탈구입니다. 피할 수 없는 운명처럼 다가오는 녀석이라 결국 왔나보다 했죠. 이미 Y는 예방 차원에서 수술이 필요하다는 진단을 받은 적이 있었고, 갑작스레 목돈을 구해야겠다고 끙끙 앓겠거니 했고요. 집이 가깝기 때문에 출근한 여자친구 대신 제가 Y를 데리고 동물병원에 갔습니다. 아버지 동향사람이 하는 곳인데 이쪽 업계에서는 꽤 이름난 분이라 개인적으로 상당히 신뢰하거든요. 낯익은 얼굴이니까 엑스레이 한 장 찍고 무릎 만져보고 가벼운 분위기 속에서 진료하는데 혹시나 해서 뇌진탕 얘기를 꺼내봤습니다. 여자친구는 상황을 꽤 심각하게 보고 있어서 뇌를 의심하고 있었거든요. 병원에서 Y는 꽤나 심한 경련을 일으키고 있었는데 그때까지는 다들 이 겁쟁이가 또 오들오들 떠는구나 하고 있었죠. 얘기를 꺼냈으니 여기저기 살펴보는데... 몇 분 뒤 저는 처음으로 그 아저씨가 심각한 표정을 짓는 걸 봤습니다. 문제가 생기면 망설이지 말고 인근 24시간 응급센터로 가라는 말과 함께 병원을 나왔고요. 저는 그날 밤부터 고열에 시달려서 하루 종일 앓아누워야 했고, 그 뒤 Y가 심각한 증세를 보이진 않았기 때문에 거의 잊고 있었습니다. 뇌를 다칠 만한 상황이 없었기에 지나친 기우일 뿐이라고, 그냥 병원에서 겁먹고 오들오들 떨었던 것뿐이라고, 그렇게 생각하면서요. 하루 종일 자다 깨다 반복한 끝에 다시 숙면을 취하려던 새벽 6시, 여자친구에게 전화가 왔습니다. Y가 죽어간다더군요. 마침 딱 잠에 들었다가 깬 상태였기 때문에 정신이 몽롱했는데 뇌를 후벼파는 듯한 비명과 울음소리에 저도 모르게 오싹함을 느꼈습니다. 공황상태에 빠져 말도 제대로 못하던 여자친구를 간신히 달래고 인근 24시 병원에서 만났습니다. Y가 발작경련을 일으켰던 건데, 제가 봤을 때와는 비교할 수 없을 정도로 나쁜 상태였습니다. 다리를 저는 수준이었던 녀석이 아예 일어나지도 못하고 엉덩이째 기어다니고 있었고, 사시나무 떨듯 온몸을 떨면서 마구 꼬아대더군요. 누가 봐도 비정상임을 알 수 있었죠. 알고 봤더니 제가 동물병원에 데려갔을 때 유독 컨디션이 좋았던 거고, 계속 심각한 상태였던 겁니다. 수의사는 뇌에 문제가 있다고 했고요. 여기서 제 얘기를 잠깐 하면 저는 한 8년? 9년? 꽤 오랫동안 고양이와 같이 살고 있습니다. 몇 년은 Y와 같은 품종인 말티즈를 기르기도 했었고요. 나름 반려동물과 부대끼면서 살아온 놈입니다. 근데 제가 그 자리에서 뭐라고 했냐면, '뇌에 문제가 있으면 어차피 치료하기 힘든 거 아닌가요?'였습니다. 여자친구가 퉁퉁 부은 눈으로 오들오들 떠는 Y를 껴안은 채 고개를 못 들고 있는데, 옆에서 '가능성도 낮은데 비싼 돈 들이지 말고 그냥 포기하면 안 되나요?'라고 지껄인 거죠. 물론 돈이 아예 없는 건 아니었습니다. 진단비로 150만원 정도 잡고 있었는데 그거야 어찌어찌 마련할 수 있는 돈이죠. 문제는 그 돈 들여서 검사해놨더니 '회생불가'라든지 '기약없음'이라는 진단이 나왔을 때 여자친구가 어떤 충격을 받을지 너무나도 쉽게 그릴 수 있었거든요. 뇌병변이라면 검사결과가 곧 시한부 판정일 가능성이 높았고, 그나마 치료할 수 있다고 해도 장기적인 약물치료로 들어가면 비용이 수백을 넘어 수천 단위로 올라가는데 그건 정말 감당할 방법이 없고요. 그래서 '치료할 가능성이 극히 희박한 상황이니 아예 더 상처 받기 전에 일찍 끝내자'는 게 솔직한 심정이었습니다. 어차피 이른 시간이라 바로 검사할 수는 없어서 일단 여자친구의 집으로 돌아왔습니다. 저는 표현을 돌려가며 빠른 안락사를 권했고, 여자친구는 억지로 치료 강행하지는 않을테니 최소한 병명이라도 알고 보내자면서 검사를 결심했습니다. 물론 그런 상황이 오면 절대 포기하지 않고 바둥거리다가 절망할 사람이라는 걸 알고 있었습니다만 최소한의 양심인 건지 더는 나쁜 소리를 못하겠더군요. 여자친구를 회사로 보낸 뒤 제가 강아지를 돌봤고(쓰다듬어주고 배설물 치워주는 게 다였지만), 처음 찾아갔던 수의사 아저씨에게 매달려서 전문병원 MRI 예약도 잡았습니다. 단, 혈액검사 결과 간이 매우 나쁜 상태라 마취 후 깨어나지 못하거나 그 이전에 밤을 못 넘길 가능성도 있다는 얘기를 들었습니다(사실 수의사 아저씨가 잡은 확률은 전문의가 잡은 확률보다 훠얼씬 높았습니다). 제가 질문게시판에 애견 장례 글을 올린 것도 이 시점이었고요. 밤이 참 길더군요. 당장이라도 죽을 것처럼 발작하는 Y, 그 모습을 보고 공황에 빠진 여자친구, 옆에서 아무 일도 없는 것처럼 들러붙는 K까지 참 길고도 힘든 밤이었습니다. 여자친구 입에서 Y가 이렇게 힘들어할 줄 알았으면 차라리 안락사시켰을 거라는 말까지 나오더군요. 어찌어찌 밤을 넘기고 검사는 잘 끝냈습니다만, 그 결과가 나오기 전까지는 여전히 할 수 있는 게 없었기 때문에 다음날 밤도 힘든 건 마찬가지였습니다. 결과가 나왔습니다. MRI상으로는 깨끗하다. 조금 더 시간이 걸리는 뇌척수액 검사로도 안 나오면 간성뇌증 등의 다른 질병을 의심해야 했습니다. 반면에 뇌척수액에서 반응이 있다면 세균성 뇌염 정도로 진단할 수 있었고요. 그래도 이때부터는 항경련제와 항염제를 투약하면서 발작을 멈출 수 있었고, 한시름 놓을 수 있었습니다. 당장 바들바들 떠는 모습이 없으니 Y가 죽을 것 같다는 공포감으로부터 해방되더군요. 저도 집에서 발 뻗고 잘 수 있었고 여자친구도 어느 정도의 안정을 되찾았습니다. 그렇게 주말을 넘겼고, 오늘 뇌척수액 검사 결과를 받았습니다. 혹시나 후유증으로 다리를 못 쓰게 될 수는 있지만, 어쨌든 죽지는 않을 거라더군요. 안도했습니다. 여자친구가 살아있기만 하면 된다더니 그래도 불구로 남길 수는 없다고 새로운 걱정에 빠졌습니다만 어쨌든 죽음으로부터의 공포에서 해방된 게 어딥니까. 동물병원에서도 회복세가 빠르다고 당분간 치료 잘 받으면 될 거라고 격려해줬고요. 애초에 뇌수막염이니 뇌종양이니 중증 리스트 쫙 뽑으면서 뇌수두증을 최선의 상황으로 여기고 있었는데 이 정도면 천운인 거죠. 겪으면서도 그랬고, 어느 정도 끝난 지금도 그렇고, 정말 힘든 한 주였습니다. 제가 여자친구에게 강권했으면 Y는 죽었겠죠. 여자친구는 지우기 힘든 트라우마를 얻었을 것이고, 제가 찾아갈 때마다 Y 없이 K 혼자 쓸쓸한 표정으로 절 보고 있었을 겁니다. 그러나 Y는 위기를 넘겼고, 3kg였던 체중은 2.65kg까지 내려갔다가 현재 2.82kg으로 회복세를 보이고 있습니다. 방금 전까지는 여자친구가 잠을 포기하면서 만든 특제 영양식을 정신없이 해치웠다고 하고요. 제가 합리적이다, 현실적이다 따위의 자기변명을 하면서 밑바닥을 드러냈지만, 어쨌든 Y는 보란듯이 살아남았습니다. 그리고 내일도 저를 보면서 꼬리를 휙휙 흔들겠죠. 이 기특한 녀석에게 특별히 오리똥집 큰 놈을 먹여줘야겠습니다. 개가 아프면 가슴이 찢어지죠.. 저희집 녀석도 척추 사이의 연골이 닳아서 통증이 오니까 비명을 지르는데 조심하면 괜찮다가도 변을 눌 때 등을 구부리지 않을 수가 없잖아요. 그 때 비명을 지르면서 변을 보더라고요. 가슴 정말 찢어지는 줄 알았어요. 당시는 진통제와 스테로이드약으로 모면했고 시간이 지나면 언제 아팠냐는 듯 잘 놀아요. 그 후 현재까지 수 년간 건강하게 잘 지내요. 매일매일 건강해서 너무 고마워요. 수술비도 수술비지만 그 비명소리를 잊을 수가 없어요.

저희 시골친정집동네에 어떤 할머니가 혼자 사셨어요. 부산 사는 아드님이 할머니 적적하실까봐 비싼 불독을 할머니께 선물로 드렸죠. 그런데 이 할머니는 개는 그냥 집지켜 주거나 보신탕으로 끓여먹는 거라고 생각하시는 그냥 시골할머니셨어요. 이 불독 외에도 불독보다는 큰 잡종개 누렁이도 두 마리 기르고 계셨죠. 불독강아지를 잡종강아지 두 마리와 함께 지저분한 우리에 키우고 계셨는데 이 개가 하루는 몸이 많이 아팠어요. 그 때 마침 엄마와 제가 할머니댁에 방문중이었거든요. 엄마와 제가 너무 딱해하니까 할머니가 (마지 못해) 약먹이면 금방이라며 마이신을 물에 타서 숟가락으로 강제로 입에 떠먹이시더라고요. 불독강아지가 거부하니까 숟가락으로 머리를 뙁! 때리시고...그 다음날 거짓말같이 건강해져서는 신나서 날뛰며 따라다니는 강아지를 할머니가 저희집 지나는 길에 보여주셨어요.
그 후 며칠 지나 불독강아지를 보러 할머니댁에 갔어요. 다른 두 마리의 강아지들(이들은 형제)이 불독강아지를 평소에 괴롭힌다고 말씀하신 게 생각나서 가봐야겠단 생각이 들었어요. 우리에 가봤더니 불독강아지가 누워 있더라고요. 이뻐해 주려고 만져보니 딱딱하게 죽어 있었어요. 다른 강아지들한테서 밤새 괴롭힘을 당하다 죽은 거예요.
엄마랑 제가 너무 불쌍해 하니까 할머니가 눈치를 보시는 것 같았어요. 개를 잘 보살피지 못한 책임감때문이 아니라 보신탕으로 끓여먹지 못해서 아까워하시는 것 같았어요. 기억이 희미한데 결국 보신탕으로 드시지는 않으셨다고 엄마가 전해주신 것 같아요.
친정집 바로 아랫집에는 노총각이 혼자 살고 있었어요. 거기에 작은 어미개가 새끼를 세 마리 낳은 거예요. 그래서 총 네 마리였는데 어미가 가장 인간과의 친화력이 좋았고 세 마리의 새끼들 중 하나는 어미를 그대로 따라 저랑 남편이랑도 잘 지냈구요. 다른 한 마리는 여전히 사람에 대한 겁이 많아 항상 경계를 놓지 않는 편이었고 세 번째 녀석은 사람을 너무 무서워해서 아예 바깥을 나오지를 않았어요. 저희부부가 얘네들을 이뻐해 주니까 그런 사람을 첨 봤던 모양인지 용감한 어미개가 제일 잘 따랐어요. 그 다음 친화력이 좋은 새끼 개, 경계를 놓치 않는 녀석, 그 집 대문 밖으로는 결코 안 나오려고 하는 녀석 순서대로 저희로부터 간격을 두고 점 찍어 놓은 듯 쭈르륵 거리를 뒀었죠.
하루는 어미개랑 용감한 새끼개 두 녀석을 데리고 뒷산으로 등산을 했어요. 코 앞에 있는 산이지만 녀석들 아마 그 산을 오른 건 처음이었을 거예요. 어미개가 너무 신나하는 게 보였는데 가르쳐주지 않아도 저희랑 꼭 붙어서 어디 멀리 안 가고 말을 참 잘 듣더라고요. 읍내에 가는 날이면 동네 아래 버스정류장으로 걸어가는 길을 어미개 혼자 따라나서는데 데려갈 수 없으니까 우린 들어가라고 팔을 크게 휘저으며 손짓을 해댔죠. 무슨 말인지 알아듣고 아쉬운 듯 계속 뒤돌아보면서도 돌아서 가더라고요.
다음 해 저 혼자 친정을 찾았을 때 엄마가 그러셨어요. 아랫집 노총각이 개들을 차에 싣고 다른 먼 동네 산 중턱으로 데리고 가 그냥 놓고 왔다고요.
지금 저희가 키우고 있는 개 데리고 오기 전의 일이라 걔네들을 몽땅 미국으로 입양하지 않은 것이 너무 후회됐었어요.
