대학교 들어가기 전까지만 해도 홍차는 커녕 커피도 싫고 그냥 쥬스 짱짱 탄산음료 짱짱이던 소년이 있었다. 소년은 고3까지만 해도 게임 외의 것에는 그닥 관심이 없었기 때문이다. 맛없는 쓴 물을 4천원씩 주고 사먹어야 한다고? 떡볶이만 사먹을 줄 알았지, 대학생들의 연애는 티비와 인터넷으로밖에 보지 못한 소년은 그런것을 이해할 수 있을 리 없었다. 그 돈을 한푼이라도 아껴서 네버윈터나이츠 한정판을 사는 것이, 밴드 오브 브라더스 디브이디를 사는 것이 더 중요했기 때문이다. 대학에 들어가 청년이 되어보니 여자들이랑 만나고 수다도 떨고 하려다보니 커피란 놈을 마셔야 한다는 것을 알았다. 비싸고 맛없는 건 그닥 중요하지 않았다. 더 중요한 목적(?)을 이루기 위해선 수단과 방법은 중요하지 않은것이다. 사람들이랑 커피도 많이 마시고 어찌어찌 여자친구도 사귀고 했지만, 커피는 라떼 외에는 별로 즐기지 않았다. 원래 우유를 짱짱 좋아했던 청년은 커피와 우유를 섞어 마시는 것에서 묘한 쾌감을 느꼈다. 하지만 아직도 그냥 쓴 놈을 물에 타먹는 것에서는 익숙해하지 않았다. 그렇지만 거기에 시럽을 타거나 하는 것은 더 끔찍한 일이었기에, 청년은 그냥 카페 라떼만을 마셨다. (사족을 달자면, 몇 년 뒤 그 청년은 카페에서 알바를 하면서 커피의 맛이라는 놈의 정체를 깨닫게 되었다고 한다.) ------------------------------ 청년이 다니던 대학가 앞에는 허브 앤 티라는 찻집이 있었다. 청년이나 청년의 여자친구나 꼬꼬마 학생이었기 때문에, 학교가 끝나면 멀리 가기보단 대학가의 밥집에서 밥을 먹고 커피를 마시는 것이 주로 하던 데이트였다. 그 당시 청년은 차에 대해서는 아는 바가 없었다. 더 꼬꼬마이던 시절에 동아리 누님이 전통차를 사준대서 몇번 얻어먹었던 적은 있었지만 그닥 기억이 남지 않았다. 누님이랑 단 둘이 시간을 보낸다는 것 때문이었는지, 차 맛이 인상적이지 않아서인지는 잘 모르겠다. 여튼 이런 저런 카페에서 데이트를 하던 청년은 그 허브 앤 티라는 찻집에도 발을 들여놓게 되었다. 묘한 분위기의 어둑어둑한 찻집은 정작 커피를 팔지 않았기에, 청년은 메뉴판의 홍차 설명을 차근차근 읽어나갔다. 얼 그레이? 보자마자 도리안 그레이의 초상화가 떠올랐지만, 그런 개드립을 쳤다간 여자친구가 싸늘한 눈초리를 보낼것이었으므로 청년은 얼른 입을 다물었다. 설명에는 오렌지 뭐시기라고 써있었다. 아쌈이나 다즐링이니 읽어도 눈에 들어오지 않아 고민하던 청년은 결국 오렌지 하나만 보고 그 얼 그레이라는 차를 시켰다. 주전자에 뜨거운 물을 따라놓고 3분인가 기다렸을까, 진한 향이 올라왔다. 주전자에서 조그만 찻잔에 얼 그레이를 따르고 맛을 보았다. 청년이 홍차와 사랑에 빠진 순간이었다. ------------------------------ 홍차와 사랑에 빠졌던 그 청년은 이제 곧 30을 바라보는 준 아재.. 뭐 청년 겸 아재 같은 그 무언가 되어가고 있다. 대학원도 어찌어찌 다니다 취직도 하고, 연애도 이별로 여러번 해보고 로맨스 주인공마냥 쌩쇼도 해보고, 스타도 하다 롤도 하다 이런 저런 인생을 살고 있다. 아재는 전문연구요원으로 일을 하고 있다. 어쨌든 신분은 군인이기 때문에 해외로 여행가는 게 쉬운 일은 아니다. 대학원에서 졸업논문을 대충 써서 던진 후, 전문노예요원이 되기 전에 잠시 유럽으로 떠난적이 있었다. 아재에겐 첫 영국 경험이었고, 돌아올 때는 포트넘 앤 메이슨의 클래식 얼그레이 홍차를 양손에 끼고 있었다. 청년에서 아재로 진화하는 동안 이런 저런 홍차들을 많이 마셔봤다. 다즐링은 너무 임팩트가 없다. 아쌈은 쓸데없이 강렬하다. 실론은.. 뭐 그래.. 사실 아재는 뭔가 섞은걸 별로 안좋아한다. 블렌디드 위스키 좋은거 많은거 알지만 왠지 싱글 몰트를 더 좋아한다. 샐러드에 드레싱도 거의 안뿌려먹는다. 커피에 우유 섞어먹는게 거의 전부다. 홍차에 우유를 섞어 밀크티를 만들어 먹는다고? 이런 썩을것들.. 근데 홍차는 블렌디드가 좋다. 뭐 사실 블렌디드가 좋은건 아니고 얼그레이가 좋다. 얼그레이의 강렬한 향과 뒤끝쩌는 그 맛이 좋다. 한동안 홍차를 너무 마셔댔더니 호흡 곤란이 올뻔한 적이 있었다. 내과에 가보니 역류성 식도염이라면서 홍차나 커피같은 카페인 든 물건들을 자제하라기에 요새는 일주일에 두어잔 정도만 마신다. --------------------- 홍차넷이라는 pgr21 잎을 따서 만든 블렌디드 홍차가 나왔다고 한다. 내가 아는 pgr21잎은, 향은 은은하면서 부드럽지만 향과 달리 강렬한 맛을 보여준다. 적당히 우려내지 않고 과하게 우려내면 지나치게 떫은 맛이 나 한동안 마시고 싶지 않을 때도 있다. 사실 홍차넷 블렌디드에는 아직까지는 pgr21 잎 외에 뭘 더 넣은건지는 잘 모르겠다. 블렌디드라고 우겨보려고 해도, 만든 사람도 마시면서 떠드는 사람도 거기서 거의 그대로 왔는 걸 뭐 어쩌겠나. 별로 차이 없는 걸 알면서도 한동안은 둘 다 같이 마셔보련다. 언젠가 두 잔의 맛이 다르고 한 쪽을 더이상 즐기지 않을 날이 올지도 모르지. 뭐 그때가 되어도 홍차나 마시는 선비 아재에 골드도 못달은 실론즈 실력은 여전할것이다 흑흑..
