제가 [Jessica Jones]를 너무 욕만 했는데... 마블의 새로운 탐정 및 영웅시리즈 [Jessica Jones]가 허접한 구석이 있지만 괄목할 만한 부분도 있어요. 영화 < Mad Max - Fury Road >가 나왔을 때 한국에선 '매드 맥스'가 유례없는 페미니스트영화임을 꿰뚫는 영화평은 제가 아직 못읽어 봤거든요. <매드 맥스-분노의 도로>에서 퓨리오사 역을 맡은 샤를리즈 테론은 상당한 카리스마를 자랑하는 남자배우인 톰 하디조차도 대중으로 하여금 '고작 조연인거야?'라는 의문이 들게 할 정도로 싱겁게 만들어 버려요. 비록 한쪽 팔이 성치 않은 역할로 나오지만 세기의 미인인 샤를리즈 테론은 남자들이 판 치는 영웅영화에서 열연한 여배우가 아닌, 기차게 멋진 액션영화를 주도한 '배우'로서 빛날 뿐이었어요. 이걸 두고 어떤 미국인은 social engineering이라고 평을 했어요. 그동안의 엔터테인먼트사업의 방향 덕분에 헐리우드영화계나 영화 속의 불평등한 남녀위치, 주로 남성의 유희에 촛점이 맞춰진 성적 장치라든지 남녀에 대한 통속적이고 진부한 고정관념의 옷을 대중은 입고 있지만, 이미 우리에게 오랫동안 맞춰진 옷이고 대부분 수동적으로 반응할 뿐인 대중의 느리고 굼뜬 속성은 굳이 그 옷을 바꿀의지가 없어요. 이 굼뜸을 수정하는 영화 속 변화가 social engineering인 거예요. 영화 속 내러티브는 그대로 두되 등장인물의 성과 인종을 획기적으로 바꾸어놓고 내러티브와의 일체를 꾀한 뒤 대중의 머리에 냅다 꽂아버리는 social engineering의 신선함은 상당히 크고 그 영향력도 무시하기 힘들겠단 생각이 들었어요. 제가 [Jessica Jones]를 보며 느낀 거예요. 여성이 주도하는 일이 드문 영웅영화에서 제시카는 일단 주인공이며 여성이에요. 그녀가 폭발할 듯 성욕을 느끼는 대상은 흑백혼혈도 아닌, 피부색이 놀랍도록 까만 근육질의 흑인남성이에요. 이런 커플셋업은 드라마를 소비하는 대부분이 백인이며 그 중 반이 남성인 미국시장에서 상당한 도발일 거예요. 보통 헐리우드영화에서 의무감에 끼어 넣어준 것 같은 흑인역할을 대중은 자애롭게 수용하죠. 때로는 그런 동정적인 캐스트에 냉소를 보이기도 해요. < 제시카 존즈 >는 아예 흑인과 여성소비자가 다수인 다른 우주의 시장을 염두에 두고 만들었나 싶을 정도로 조연부터 엑스트라까지 흑인등장인물이 시시때때로 자주 나와요. 그리고 꽤 비중있는 역할들 대부분이 여성이에요. 비서와 내연관계에 있는 로펌의 태풍은 의사를 아내로 두고 있는 레즈비언 CEO예요. 드라마 각본 자체는 혁명적이랄 것 없는 보통의 시나리오예요. 드라마를 처음부터 끝까지 이끄는 주인공, 대형로펌을 운영하는 법조계의 신, 주연이 줄곧 뜨거운 정사를 꿈꾸는 이, 주연에게 최고의 내조가 되는 친구 등과 같은 등장인물들은 기존을 답습하는 특이할 것 없는 구성이지만 여기에 여성과 흑인코드를 사시미칼로 요리하듯 능수능란하게 조리해 놓고 대중들이 시식하게 만들어 놓은 거죠. 여주 제시카의 둘도 없는 친구는 잘나가는 라디오쇼 진행자이며 역시 여성인데 이 여성 또한 남자친구와 섹스를 함에 있어서 여성상위를 격렬하게 즐겨요(이것도 장치가 아닐까 저 나름대로 분석;;) 이렇게 대놓고 도발적이지만 시리즈 특성 상 내러티브에 집중하지 않을 수 없는 대중은 모니터를 붙잡고 계속 시청을 하게 될 거예요. 상품광고가 우리 의식에 잠식해 와 친숙해지고 구매력을 창출시키듯 영화 속 social engineering 장치를 거듭 시청하는 대중 또한 새로운 옷에 점점 그들의 몸을 맞춰갈 지도 모를 일이에요. <매드맥스>에서 드러난 페미니즘에 대해 조명한 리뷰들을 소개해보자면...

...페미니즘 이야기가 나올 때가 되었죠. 영화가 쇠고기도 아니고, 이 작품이 페미니즘을 몇 등급까지 구현하고 있는가를 따질 생각은 없어요. 하지만 이 영화가 의식적으로 페미니즘 주제를 탐구하고 있고 그 [탐구가 시리즈 안에서 논리적인 동시에 발전적]이라는 것은 언급할 필요가 있습니다.
기존 시리즈에서 성폭력이라는 소재가 어떻게 사용되었는지 떠올려보시죠. 애들 나오는 3편은 없지만 1편과 2편에는 각각 하나씩 나오는데, 모두 당시 익스플로이테이션 영화들이 그랬던 것처럼 가혹하기 짝이 없습니다. 1편에서 달아나는 남성 희생자는 놀림감이고 2편에서 강간살해당하는 여성을 그리는 태도는 사자에게 죽임 당하는 영양을 바라보는 것처럼 냉담하기 짝이 없죠. 다시 말해 [기존 시리즈는 성폭행을 <매드 맥스> 세계가 품은 야만성의 일부로만 보고 더 이상 깊이 들어가지 않았습니다.]
그런데 30년 뒤에 나온 영화는 이 태도를 완전히 뒤집었습니다. 이 영화에는 관객들을 자극하기 위한 성폭행 묘사는 나오지 않습니다. 하지만 [이런 상황에서 어떻게 성폭행이 조직적으로 행해지는지를 설명하고 피해자에게 적극 감정 이입하면서 이것이 그들에게 어떤 의미인지를 이야기]하고 있죠. 지금까지 사막에 묻혀있던 주제가 30년만의 폭우라도 맞은 것처럼 활짝 피어난 것입니다.
여성 캐릭터의 발전도 보입니다. 포스트 아포칼립스물에서 강인한 여성은 드물지 않아요. <매드 맥스>에만 해도 버지니아 헤이가 연기한 여전사나 티나 터너가 연기한 \'아주머니\' 캐릭터가 있었죠. 하지만 <매드 맥스: 분노의 도로>처럼 여성 캐릭터들을 전면에 세우고 이들에게 다양성과 입체적인 관계묘사를 부여한 영화는 드물죠. 퓨리오사나 신부들은 선례를 들 수 있을지도 모르지만 부발리니 할머니들을 보고도 같은 이야기를 하긴 어렵지 않습니까? ...

...이상할 정도로 많은 사람들이 여기서 맥스를 남성의 대표로, 퓨리오사를 여성의 대표로만 본다. 하지만 <매드 맥스> 시리즈의 전체 성격을 보면 그런 식의 읽기는 부족하다. 오히려 고전적인 서부극의 공식이 더 잘 맞는다. 맥스는 수적 열세인 상황에서 이길 수 있는 방법을 알아낸 떠돌이 총잡이다. 퓨리오사는 그 이후에도 남아 사회를 이끌어야 하는 잠재적인 지도자다. 시타델의 점령은 맥스가 말할 때와 퓨리오사가 말할 때 전혀 다른 의미를 가진다. [우리가 진짜 주의 깊게 봐야할 부분도 두 의미의 차이, 그리고 그 낙차에서 발생하는 내적 드라마이지 아이디어를 제시하고 받아들이는 사람들의 성이 아니다.]
영화를 보고 비평하면서 영화의 모든 요소들을 다 분석할 수도 없다. 내가 이 영화를 특정한 시선으로 본다고 해서 그걸 무조건 강요해야 할 이유도 없다. 하지만 <매드 맥스 : 분노의 도로>의 페미니즘 논쟁에 참여한 사람들 상당수가 페미니즘 영화를 일대일 상징으로만 이루어진 지루한 영역으로 여기는 것처럼 보여 심히 걱정스럽다는 말은 해야겠다. 적어도 내가 전에 체크했을 때 이 세계는 훨씬 역동적이고 다양한 곳이었다. [쉽게 분류될 수 없는 입체적이고 불완전한 여성들이 쉽게 분류될 수 없는 입체적이고 불완전한 행위를 한다는 것 자체는 이 영화의 페미니즘 자격과는 아무 상관이 없다.]

...결국, 믿음이 문제이다. 대개 여성들은 아버지와 어머니 그리고 할머니가 전해준 신화와 동화를 듣고 자란다. 세상도 마찬가지이다. 세상은 순진한 믿음의 서사가 곧 여성적 행복의 길을 약속한다고 말해준다. 여자들은 그래서 길을 내는 게 아니라 나 있는 길을 따라가도록 성장한다. 길을 내는 건, 위험한 여자들이나 하는 짓이다. 하지만, 결국 길은 내 발로 내야만 한다. 믿을 수 있는 것 역시 내가 지금껏 걸어오면서 만들어 놓은 길이다. 퓨리오사가 강인하기는 하지만 남자들만큼 힘이 센 것은 아니다. 그녀가 강인한 이유는 바로 자신을 믿기 때문이다. 도착적 지도자인 임모탄의 거짓 희망을 믿지 않고, 한때 그녀가 살았던 푸른 땅의 기억을 믿는 것, 순진한 믿음이 소녀를 잠재울 수는 있지만 여자를 구원할 수는 없다.
