겁나 긴 단편.. 클릭했는데 다 안 읽으면 궁둥이가 하나로 통합할 것이오. * * * * * * 물이 끓는다. 몽상에 잠긴 동안은 라면물이 빨리 끓는다. 시간은 기계처럼 일정하게 흐르지 않는 것이다. 라면을 냄비째 쟁반에 담고 김치도 없이 컴퓨터 앞에 양반다리를 하고 앉아 블로그를 채워 나가는 일은 은미가 하루 중 가장 행복해 하는 일이다. 은미가 지금껏 블로그에서 일관적인 흥미를 보이며 열정적으로 긁적인 관심사가 있다. 바로 우리가 꾸는 꿈은 사차원세계를 암시한다는 것이다. 미지의 세계가 꿈을 통해 삼차원세계 사람들에게 노골적으로 보여지고 있지만 대부분의 사람들은 잠을 깨면 그것을 기억하지 못하거나, 가끔 개인의 잠재의식이 우스꽝스런 꿈을 연출하여 실존하는 사차원세계의 일면들 또한 망상인 것처럼 도매급으로 취급하게 만들기 때문에, 꿈에 등장하는 세계가 어딘가에 존재하고 있으리라고는 전혀 생각하지 못하는 것이다. 그건 정말 재미있는 아이디어였다. 은미는 학교에서 쉬는 시간에 옹기종기 모여 수다를 떨고 있는 반 아이들을 물끄러미 쳐다보았다. 아이들을 배경으로 빛나던 햇살이 은미의 시선을 밀어내는 통에 눈빛으로도 다가갈 수 없는 그들과 자신의 간극에 외로움이 밀려왔다. 그 뒤 뜬금없이 떠오른 생각이 꿈과 사차원세계였다. 자신이 이 세계 사람들과 별로 어울리지 않는 것 같다는 생각은 비애일 수만은 없다. 너와 나의 세계는 차원이 달라. 어디있는지 알기만 하면 무서운 호기심이 생길 일인 걸. 여튼 울적하던 기분이 금방 치유될 정도로 마음에 드는 내용이다. 어느덧 밤 11시가 가까워 온다. 할머니가 오실 시간이다. 고령의 할머니는 마을버스로 다섯 정거장 떨어져 있는 식당에서 반찬을 만드신다. 오늘 또 식당에서 김치를 담그신다고 하셨으므로 많이 고단하실 터이다. 은미는 숙제를 마치고 잠자리를 준비해 놓고 현관문을 나섰다. 달동네의 시월밤은 일년 중 가장 근사해. 여든 세 개의 계단을 걸어내려가는 동안 은미는 세 번이나 멈추어 서서 밤하늘의 달을 올려다 보았다. 그리고 오늘밤 잠들기 전 블로그에 저 상냥하게 빛나는 달빛을 찬양하리라 다짐했다. 할머니가 왜소한 몸을 이끌고 오르는 계단길을 달빛이 따르고 있었다. [어두운 데 나와 있지 말라니까.] [오늘 김치 담그셨지. 다리 아프시겠다.] 은미는 할머니의 팔짱을 끼고 여든 세 개의 계단을 할머니와 나란히 올랐다. [저녁은. 또 라면 먹지 말아라.] [대충 먹었어.] 할머니는 점심과 저녁을 식당에서 들고 오시므로 은미가 할머니와 단둘이 식사를 하는 것은 아침식사 때만이다. 오늘 저녁 은미는 내일 할머니와 같이 먹을 아침을 위해 계란말이와 김을 고이 남겨 두었다. 난 라면이 맛있어. 은미는 할머니가 잠자리에 들기 전 꼭 할머니의 이곳저곳을 안마해 드린다. 구겼다가 편 종이같은 주름. 거칠거칠한 할머니의 손이 더 흉측하게 변해버리기 전에 바세린로션으로 발라서 펴 준다. 할머니의 팔과 다리는 간난아기를 다루듯 조심스럽게 마사지해주지 않으면 안 된다. 노동의 고단함이 몸 구석구석 스며들어 할머니의 진을 빼놓았기 때문에 무리한 손길로 지친 할머니의 맨살을 놀래켜선 안된다. 할머니는 은미가 강아지같다고 생각했다. 할머니와 은미의 시선은 볼록한 화면의 티비에서 방영되고 있는 멜로드라마에 고정되어 있었다. 남자주인공이 실연의 상처를 극복하지 못해 괴로와하는 장면이 나왔다. 진부한 술잔과 진부한 비통함이 화면을 가득 채웠다. [할머니, 나는 연인과 헤어지고 슬퍼하는 남녀들이 이해가 안 가. 내가 싫다는데 그래서 떠난다는데 왜 미련을 둘까. 나는 내가 싫다고 하는 순간 그래 그럼 나도 네게 관심없어 하고 시큰둥하고 말 거 같애. 나 싫다는 사람을 두고 왜 울고 괴로워하지. 내가 비정상이야?] 졸린 정신이 더 깊은 잠을 집어삼키려던 순간 할머니의 동공은 은미의 수다에 잠시 커졌다가 이내 밀려오는 졸음에 모든 것을 내맡겼다. [할머니! 마당에 있는 잡초 뽑으면 안돼. 알았지?] 은미는 모든 살아있는 초록을 사랑한다. 할머니는 잠 속으로 끌려갔다. 일흔 아홉, 여든, 여든 하나, 여든 둘, 그리고 여든 셋. 계단을 오르며 은미는 문득 오늘 블로그에 남길 많은 단상들이 하루 종일 쏟아졌지만 막상 글로 남길 엄두가 나지 않았다. 대부분의 단상들은 은미 자신에 관한 것이었다. 그것은 지금껏 은미가 온몸으로 거부해오고 있던 상황에 대한 김빠지거나 심지어는 불행한, 가난한 현실에 대한 가차없고 메마르고 방도없는 무력한 기분들이었다. 아무에게도 들려주고 싶지 않다. 자신의 가난을, 성과없는 성적을, 자신이 고아임을, 불행한 기억 같은 소지품들과 낡은 옷들과 곱지 않은 머릿결과 하얗게 빛나지 않는 살결을 들려 주고 싶지 않았다. 에밀 아자르가 <자기 앞의 생>에서 보여준 모모는 빈곤 속에서도 빛나잖아. 그 아이는 바쁜 꿀벌같이 로사할머니를 사랑하거든. 사람들이 나를, 가난 속에서도 영광스런 색채로 빛나는 아이라고 바라볼 준비가 되어 있지 않는 한 은미는 누구에게도 입을 열고 싶지 않았다. 은미는 컴퓨터를 켰다. 은미가 숨는 곳. http://blog.ahahdmlsns.com. 은미는 블로그화면이 뜨자 깜짝 놀란 눈으로 한 곳을 응시했다. 누군가가 코멘트를 남긴 것이다. 숫자 1. 하나의 댓글. 누가 내 블로그를 찾아 왔을까. 어떻게 들어왔을까. 내 블로그는 주소를 직접 입력하지 않는 이상은 결코 들어올 수 없게끔 모든 검색이 차단되어 있는데. 글쓴이:지나가다가 comment : 블로그주소가 모모의 눈? 혹시 에밀 아자르의 모하메드 그리고 모하메드의 맑은 눈? 아니면 모하메드의 눈을 통해 본 세상? 사차원세계이야기 너무너무 재밌어요. 소설을 쓰실 건가요? 아니면 단편? 블로그 대부분을 차지하고 있는 각종 상상이야기 정말 흥미롭게 읽었어요. 저 여기 자주 놀러와도 되죠?^^ 첫방문자다. 은미는 얼굴 가득 근육이 이완되며 미소가 번지는 것을 느꼈다. 난 초대한 적이 없으나 누군가가 찾아왔다. 마치 그동안 날 열심히 찾아다닌 것 같이. 그는 내 블로그에 깃든 모모의 마음도 읽었다. 아 기분이 날아갈 듯이 좋다. 나의 손님은 첫인사만으로 나를 천국으로 데려다 주었다. reply : 안녕하세요 지나가다가님. 저의 미천한 단상들을 재미있게 보셨다니 저도 기뻐요. 네. 자주 놀러 오세요.. 은미는 자신의 블로그를 한참 뚫어져라 보았다. 드넓은 네트워크에서 결국 파랑새를 자신의 집에서 찾게 된 것이다. 자신의 블로그에서. 깜짝 놀랄 일이 또 일어났다. 조금 있다 지나가다가님이 두번째 댓글을 남겼다. comment : 세상을 보는 현명한 눈은 본능처럼 타고나나봐요. 모모가 자란 곳은 창녀들과 성도착자들, 마약을 하는 흑인친구와 매춘중개업자들이 거들먹거리는 사창가의 뒷구석이지만 모모의 눈동자는 그들 주변에서 일어나는 일들이 세상이 불공평하기 때문에 생기는 거란 걸 누가 가르쳐주지 않아도 알고 있었어요. 사회는 모모가 자라는 내내 무언으로 주문을 외죠. '너나 너의 주변사람들은 삶의 바닥에서 쓸데없는 목숨을 부지하고 있는 사람들이거나 다수가 괄시하는 소수의 삶을 사는 사람들이야.' 하지만 모모는 놀랍도록 풍부한 영혼을 지니고 있는 아이었기 때문에 사회가 끊임없이 모모의 귓속에서 '하찮은 너따위의 삶'이라고 종알거리는 것에는 아랑곳 않고 로사할머니를 돌봐줄 것이라는 생각으로 가득했어요. 그리고 할머니의 죽음이 가까이 다가올수록 자신이 얼마나 로사할머니를 사랑하는지 매일 더 깊이 깨달았어요. 늙고 추한 로사할머니를 그녀가 세상에서 가장 두려워 하는 것으로부터 지켜내는 건 불공평한 사회보다 더 중요한 일이었어요. 병원에서 식물인간으로 의미없는 목숨을 부여잡고 사는 것만큼이나 끔찍할 게 없는 로사할머니에게 유일한 희망은 모모였어요. 모모는 로사할머니를 지하실에 숨기고 똥범벅이 되어 주검이 될 때까지 지켜주었어요. 사랑하는 로사할머니를 위해. 저는 한 인간에 대한 깊은 사랑으로 바삐 일렁이는 그의 심장이 좋아요. 저는 그렇지 못한 것 같아서요. 그리고 더 좋은 점은 뭐냐면요. 모모의 정신이 다른 사람들보다 고귀해 보이는 이유는 그 아이의 가난때문이에요. 모모의 가난은 실패자의 그것도 천덕꾸러기의 그것도 아니게 보여요. 고결해 보여요. 가난을 전혀 염두에 두지 않는 모모라는 인성자체 때문에요. 모모는 너무도 사랑스러워요. 은미는 지나가다가님의 장문의 코멘트가 예상치 못한 선물처럼 상큼하고 기쁘고 놀라웠다. 이 사람은 누구일까. 남자일까 여자일까. 나처럼 올해 고등학생이 된 사람일까 어른일까. 공부를 잘한 사람이었을까 나처럼 딴생각만 하다가 성적이 지지부진한 사람일까. 나는 아무것도 알려고 하지 않을 거야. 이 사람이 나에 대해서 아무런 단서도 발견하지 못했으면 하고 바라니까 그게 공평해. 나에게 이것저것 묻지 말았으면 좋겠다..대답해주기 싫다.. 은미는 자신의 블로그를 두고 새로고침을 도대체 몇번이나 눌러댔는지 셀 수가 없을 지경이었다. 저녁의 퍼런 빛은 순식간에 어둠으로 돌변한다. 시간은 반드시 기계적으로 일정하게 흐르지만은 않는 것이다. 잊고 있던 배고픔이 급작스럽게 은미를 쥐고 흔드는 것 같았다. 은미는 서둘러 저녁밥을 차려 먹고 잠자리도 마련해놓고 할머니를 마중 나갈 채비를 했다. 다섯, 넷, 셋, 둘, 그리고 하나. 계단이 끝나는 지점에서 기다리고 있으면 할머니가 달빛을 거느리고 나타나신다. 날씨가 점점 쌀쌀해지고 있다. 할머니가 보였다. 은미는 할머니의 팔짱을 끼고 계단을 같이 올랐다. 은미는 나날이 성장하는데 할머니는 점점 작아지신다. 할머니의 팔은 어이없으리만치 가볍고 허약하다. 오늘밤 할머니의 걸음은 쉬엄쉬엄 가기를 원했다. 은미는 수 개월 전부터 짐작한 바이지만 오늘을 기점으로 할머니와의 팔짱이 평소의 다정한 팔짱이 아니고 부축이 되었음을 받아들여야 했다. 매일 아침 일어나는 일이 고역이다. 새벽녘에 잠들어 아침 일찍 깨어나 등교준비를 하기까지의 과정은 고문이 돼버렸다. 은미가 새벽까지 키보드를 탁탁거리다가 할머니에게 잔소리를 들은 지 며칠 째다. 그럼에도 불구하고 눈을 뜨자마자 은미가 가장 먼저 하는 일은 블로그를 확인하는 일이다. 학교를 파하자마자 집에 와서 가장 먼저 하는 일도 블로그를 확인하는 일이다. 말할 수 없는 설레임이 인다. 최근 일주일간 은미와 은미의 유일한 방문자는 수많은 댓글을 나누었다. 방문자는 자신의 닉네임을 미뉴에로 정했다. 미뉴에는 완벽한 방문자다. 은미의 신상을 묻지 않으며 자신의 신상을 이야기할 때에도 동질의 정보를 요구하지 않는다. 은미와 미뉴에는 공중에 투명하게 둥둥 떠 있는 채로 서로를 염탐하는 법이 없이 오로지 그들만의 대화를 이어갔다. 아직 말을 많이 아끼는 은미보다 미뉴에가 자신의 이야기를 더 많이 들려주었다. 미뉴에는 여자다. 미뉴에는 미국에 산다. 미뉴에는 학생이다. 미뉴에의 부모님은 한국에 거주하시며 미국이모댁에 거주한다. 미뉴에의 이모님댁은 세탁소를 하신다. 미뉴에는 낡은 옷을 입고 슬리퍼를 끌며 해변을 산책하는 것을 좋아한다. 미뉴에는 나에게 많은 칭찬을 해주었다. 나, 은미의 상상력은 지금껏 미뉴에가 만난 그 누구에게서도 발견하지 못했을만큼 내용이 풍부하고 청량하다고 했다. 그녀는 그렇게 또 나를 천국으로 안내하며 한껏 달뜬 기분을 만끽하게 해주었다. 미뉴에 : 고흐의 역작을 더욱 빛나게 하는 건 그가 견뎌낸 가난때문일 거에요. 생각해 보세요. 고흐가 자신만의 화법으로 일약 스타로 발돋움하고 풍족한 삶을 살다 편하게 명을 달리했다면 저는 결코 지금만큼이나 고흐에게 매료되지 않았을 거에요. 그치만 이제 가난은 더이상 과거의 기억에서 영광스럽게 떠올려질 수 있는 어떤 것에서 점점 멀어져 가고 있어요. 역경을 딛게 하는 힘의 원천에서 멀어져 가는 것 같다구요. 가난은 이제 사람들이 멸시하거나 조롱하지 않으면 홀로 비참해져 있을 뿐 보물을 던져주는 일이 없어요. 저는 가난이 가진 고유의 가치가 소진되고 있는 것을 느껴요. 그러지 말았으면 좋겠어요. 제가 자주 가는 99센트 가게가 있어요. 흑인들, 멕시칸들이 많이 와서 싸구려음식을 사 가요. 저들 사이에도 언젠가 고흐나 베토벤같은 사람이 나와야 할테지만 그럴 가능성은 요원해 보여요. 옛날에는 존재하곤 했던 가치를 소진해가고 있거든요. 가난해도 여전히 가치가 빛난 채로 살 수 있어야 해요. 나는 그런 세상에서 살고 싶어요. 은미 : 멋있어요... 미뉴에 : 아 참 화제가 많이 옆길로 샜는데 다시 원래 하던 이야기로 돌아가서 사차원세계에 대한 아이디어 앞으로 어떻게 이야기로 풀어내실 거예요? 은미 : 아 그거요. 주인공이 어느날 잠에서 눈을 뜨니 사차원세계에 있는 거에요. 그리고 사차원세계에서 잠이 들어서야 꿈을 통해 삼차원세계의 삶을 접하고 그 삶은 계속 살아지고 있더란 거죠. 즉, 삼차원의 세계에 사는 우리가 꿈을 통해 접하는, 시공간이 두서없다거나 초현실적이기도 한 꿈의 세계가 바로 사차원의 세계인데 이 역시 우주 안이든 바깥에서든 실존하는 세계인 거에요. 주인공은 삼차원의 현실세계에 살면서 꿈에 나오는 사차원세계를 수천번 목격했으며 단지 그 꿈의 내용을 대부분 까먹었을 뿐이면서 그건 단지 꿈이라고 생각하고 살았어요. 다른 사람들과 마찬가지로요. 그치만 어느날 실존하는 사차원세계에 불시착을 하면서 삼차원세계를 이론적인 가정일 뿐이라고 믿고 사는 사차원세계 사람들을 만나게 돼요. 사차원세계의 사람들 역시 꿈을 통해 삼차원세계를 목격하게 되지만 그건 단지 꿈이라고 치부해요. 시공간을 초월하여 이곳 저곳 여러곳을 여행다니죠. 사차원의 세계는 셀 수 없이 많은 공간으로 이루어져 있는데 각 개인이 소유하고 있는 그 공간은 저마다의 특색과 정보를 지니고 있어요. 이 사람들은 여러 공간들을 돌아다니며 소통을 나누고 정보를 교환하죠. 이들은 우리가 가진 오감 중 이감만을 느끼고 살아요. 삼차원세계 사람들은 시각, 청각 외 미각, 촉각, 후각을 지니고 있지만 사차원사람들은 시각, 청각과 필요에 따라 존재하는 둔감한 촉각만이 있을 뿐이에요. 이들은 음식의 맛과 냄새와 온도의 차이, 성욕 등이 무엇인지 몰라요. 그러나 그런 것이 있는 세계가 있다더란 이야기를 우리가 사차원의 세계가 있다더라하고 이야기하는 것처럼 공허하게 담소할 뿐이에요. 미뉴에 : 흥미로와요! 어쩜 은미님은 그런 생각을 해내실 수가. 아아 전 종종 잠깐만 뿅 사라졌으면 좋겠다고 생각할 때가 있어요. 같은 클래스에 있는 백인애들한테서 투명인간 취급받을 때면 딱 죽고 싶은 심정이에요. 그 때마다 은미님의 사차원세계로 증발했다가 다시 본래의 장소로 돌아올 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요. 그건 그렇고 저 오늘 마켓 앞에서 무척 노쇠하신 노인 두 분이 장 본 물건을 차트렁크에 싣는 모습을 물끄러미 보고 있었어요. 그 분들 아마 90세도 넘으셨을걸요. 시간이 정지했다가 다시 정상적으로 흐를 동력이 모자라기라도 했던 모양인지 그 분들 걸음걸이며 물건을 집어넣는 제스쳐며 모든 것이 느릿느릿했어요. 그 살폿살폿한 발걸음이며 오랜 친구같아 보이던 두 분의 다정함을 보니 나도 늙으면 친구랑 저렇게 살아야겠단 생각이 들었어요. 은미님이랑 저랑 꼭 저렇게 장보는 장면도 떠올려봤어요^^. 이들의 대화가 깊어가는만큼 밤도 깊어갔다. 밤 11시가 훨씬 넘었으나 은미는 할머니를 마중나가는 일은 당분간 미루기로 했다. 근 일주일을 마중을 나가지 않았지만 미뉴에님을 놓칠 순 없는 노릇이다. 할머니는 무릎이 심상치 않음을 안 지 수 개월째지만 할 수 있는 한 일을 해야했다. 다리가 아파왔을 때 식당의 배려로 얼마간은 시간을 줄여 일해왔지만 통증이 심해지고 나서는 반찬만드는 일 외 음식을 나르고 치우는 등의 고단한 일을 해야할 경우 몸이 당해내지를 못하자 주인의 눈치가 보이기 시작했다. 결국 오늘 마지막 일을 끝내고 육신의 고단함은 남겨 두고 앞으로 살길에 대한 부담감만을 안은 채 식당일을 완전히 청산하고 왔다. 더 무리하면 수술이 불가피할 수도 있다는 언질을 의사에게서 들은 지 꽤 되었다. 할머니는 당분간 거동을 조심하며 앞으로 무엇을 하며 먹고 살 것인지 천천히 궁리하기로 했다. 은미에게 밤늦게 나오지 말라고 매일같이 잔소리를 한 덕이었는지 아이는 요사이 바깥에 나와 있지 않는다. 예순 셋, 예순 넷, 예순 다섯. 은미는 계단을 오르다 말고 또 섰다. 어제 얘기했어야 했어. 어제 입다물고 있다가 오늘이 되어 버렸잖아. 나는 나의 거짓된 모습을 숨기며 더 시간을 끌어버렸다. 미뉴에님은 미국에서 힘들게 세탁소일을 하는 이모님댁에서 기거하며, 학교다니면서는 같은 반의 백인친구들에게서 무시를 당하며 사는 것까지 나에게 모든 것을 허심탄회하게 이야기해주었는데 나는 공상하던 것 말고는 들려준 이야기가 너무 없잖아. 다행히 미뉴에님은 나처럼 고등학생인가봐. 책 무지 많이 읽는 고3언니인 것 같아. 부끄러워하지 않아도 돼. 엄마아빠없이 사는 것, 달동네에서 마른콩껍질같이 비루하고 작은 집에 사는 것, 학교에서는 대부분의 반친구들과 이질감을 느끼며 외로움에 떠는 것 모두 부끄러워할 필요없어. 미뉴에님은 암렇지 않게 자신의 모든 치부를 다 드러내도 오히려 그게 더 멋있잖아. 너무 멋있어서 나 심장이 터질 것 같아. 미뉴에님은 빈곤 속의 나를 보면서도 모모같이 빛난다고 생각해 줄거야. 나를 정말 많이 칭찬해 주었어. 미뉴에님과 미국에서 같이 살게 될까? 만약 나더러 오라고 하면 우리 할머니는? 할머니가 돌아가시고 안 계신 시점에서는 난 언제든지 갈 수 있으니까. 은미는 순간 당혹스러웠다. 할머니가 돌아가시고 나서 언제든지 미국으로 향할 수 있는 자유의 몸을 상상하면서 양심의 가책을 느꼈다. 내가 지금 무슨 상상을 하고 있는 거야. 댓글이 없다. 일주일간 단 하루도 빠짐없이 둘이서 댓글을 주고 받았지만 오늘은 조용하다. 은미는 컴퓨터앞에서 떠날 생각을 하지 않았다. 라면도 이미 끓여 먹었고 숙제도 마친데다 온라인 이곳저곳을 돌아다녀도 봤고 수십번 블로그를 새로고침 해봐도 새로 달린 댓글이 없다. 은미는 풀이 죽어 버렸다. 할머니가 잔소리를 하신다. 다른 계획이 있어서 식당일을 접으셨다는 할머니는 요즘 집에 계시면서 잔소리가 느셨다. 은미는 짜증을 삼켰지만 오늘도 역시 안마까지 해드리고 싶은 마음은 내키지 않았다. 일상이던 안마가 없는 요즘, 조그만 방은 불편한 기운을 뿜어내며 할머니와 은미 주변을 부산스럽게 감싸고 돌았다. 은미는 할머니의 잔소리가 방안 어딘가에 잠복하고 있다가 금방이라도 튀어나올 것 같은 성가신 염려를 느끼면서도 간밤에 열 번도 넘게 잠에서 번쩍 깨어 컴퓨터를 들여다보는 자신을 스스로도 도저히 어찌할 도리가 없었다. 은미는 완전히 밤잠을 설쳤다. 등교를 제 시간에 하려면 서두르지 않으면 안된다. 이른 아침에 할머니가 깨우는 목소리를 여러번 듣고 다시 잠에 곯아떨어진 기억이 어렴풋이 난다. 할머니는 말없이 은미를 노려보았다. 지난 자정, 또 아침에 비몽사몽할 것 같으면 얼른 잠자리에 들 것을 재촉했으나 은미는 잠이 들었다가도 눈을 뜨고 또 컴퓨터를 들여다보고 있는 것이었다. 은미의 과도한 컴퓨터에 대한 집착은 좁은 방안에서 혼령처럼 흐느적거리다가 할머니의 노여움에 맞서 독기를 뿜어댔다. 은미는 늦잠을 잤단 생각에 정신이 번쩍 들면서도 오늘아침에도 예외없이 컴퓨터에 손을 대고 있었다. 할머니는 그런 은미의 컴퓨터에 대한 광기을 바라보다가 아이에게 소리를 질러댔다. 은미는 평소답지 않게 표독스럽게 입술을 꽁다물고 아침을 거른채 현관문을 나섰다. 이주일이 지났다. 그 동안 미뉴에님으로부터 단 한 번의 짧은 안부인사메세지가 왔다. 할머니가 지지난 주 세번째 연골주사를 맞고 다리의 통증이 많이 가신 후 폐지를 줍기 시작한 지도 이주일이 되었다. 은미는 미뉴에님에게서 당분간 바빠 블로그방문이 어려울테지만 조금만 지나면 또 즐거운 담화를 나누게 될 것이라는 짧은 답변을 한 번 받았을 뿐이지만 이 답변은 은미에게 구원이었다. 은미는 만반의 준비를 갖추고 있었다. 자신을 솔직하게 내보이고 여전히 미뉴에님의 눈에 모모와 같은 모습으로 빛날 준비가 되어 있었다. 은미의 눈을 멀게하는 일이 결코 없도록 관용을 베풀어준 그 달빛은 달동네에서 올려다 본 달빛이었으며 은미 역시 대부분의 반아이들과 소통을 하지 못하고 자신만의 세계에서 몽상을 일삼을 뿐 아니라 빨강머리 앤처럼 엄마아빠가 없기도 하다고 이야기해 줄 것이었다. 그리고 저마다의 애환이 있는 이웃들과 유일한 혈육인 할머니에 관한 이야기도 들려줄 작정이었다. 그리고 드디어 미뉴에님이 돌아왔다. 미뉴에 : 은미님 방가방가! 아아 은미님 생각 많이 했는데 저 이제 매일매일 찾아뵐 수 있어요. 그동안 올린 글이 별로 없네요. 그동안 어떻게 지내셨어요? 은미 : 네.. 전 잘 지냈어요.. 미뉴에 : 저는 스케쥴이 안돼서 빠진다고 하는 걸 이모와 이모부가 부득부득 우기셔서 같이 이주간 유럽여행을 다녀왔어요. 프랑스는 언제나 방문하기 좋은 곳이에요. 실망시키는 법이 없어요. 독일에는 베프가 있어서 걔랑 같이 지냈던 시간도 좋았구요. 막상 여행준비하는 과정이 엄두가 나지 않아서 그렇지 일단 도착하면 마음을 사로잡는 그 곳 음식들, 건물들, 사람들, 어느 하나 싫은 구석이 없어요. 은미 : 네.. 미뉴에 : 아 그리고 은미님 저도 좋은 스토리가 생각났어요. 이거 결말은 비애로 가득 ㅠㅠ. 제가 생각해낸 스토리의 주인공은 앳된 여중생이에요. 엄마아빠에게서 진작에 버림받은 이 아이는 할머니와 단둘이 산동네 단칸방에 살아요. 할머니는 폐지를 주워 모아 판 돈으로 근근히 생활비를 마련해요. 이런 장면을 상상해 봤어요. 젊은이가 커피숖에서 친구를 기다리는 중이었죠. 창밖을 내다보는데 차가 쓩쓩 달리는 도로 너머 할머니가 폐지를 줍고 계셨어요. 커다란 폐지 하나가 그만 바람에 날려 차가 달리는 도로 안으로 굴러간 것이 아니겠어요. 할머니는 주춤주춤 하시다가 그 위험한 길을 아차스럽게 차를 피해 들어가서 폐지를 얼른 낚아채고 다시 길밖으로 뛰어나오셨어요. 아무도 거들떠보지 않는 폐지가 할머니에겐 생계를 유지하는 수단이고 그 생계품을 목숨 걸고 차 속을 뛰쳐들어가 건져 내오는 할머니의 모습에 순간 젊은이의 눈시울이 뜨거워지는 장면이요. 저는 폐지에 관한 단상을 가끔 하거든요. 한국에서 폐지가 갖는 의미는 남달라요. 한국에서 폐지는 잃을 것이 없는 이들의 마지막 삶의 비상구에요. 누구도 그들을 위해 구비해 둔 것이 아닌, 많은 이들의 생활배설품인 폐지가 누구에게는 삶을 연명하는 방법이에요. 그래서 저는 한국에서라면 아무리 쓰레기라도 폐지를 가지고도 휴머니즘을 자극하는 예술품을 만들수 있겠다 생각했어요. 그것이 유화라면, 간밤에 류머티즘의 고통으로 앓듯이 잠에 골아 떨어진 사이 예상치 못한 폭우로 전날 모아두었던 폐지가 물을 잔뜩 머금고 발기발기 찢어진 모습을, 깊은 주름사이 근심을 안고 바라보는 할머니를 그려볼 수 있겠죠. 그 폐지는 오늘 만원에 팔아 손녀에게 먹일 반찬거리를 사기위한 거였어요. 옛날에 유명한 작가의 전시작품을 청소하는 아주머니가 쓰레기인 줄 알고 말끔히 치워놨더란 기사를 읽은 적이 있어요. 그 예술작품의 재료가 만약 폐지였고 폐지로 생계를 연명하는 노인을 주제로 한 것이었다면 다른 나라의 어느 전시회에서는 청소부가 실수로 치워버리지 말란 법없이 이해받지 못할 작품이겠지만 적어도 한국에서는 결코 쓰레기취급을 받을 수 없는, 만약 누군가가 실수로 치워버렸다고 해도, 그 의미를 깨닫고 나서 숙연해질 수밖에 없는 특별한 물건이에요. 한국에서의 폐지란 것은 말이에요. 아~ 이런 이야기 정말 감동적이지 않아요? 난 정말 기특해 기특해. 은미는 자신의 솔직한 모습을 내보이는 것은 어쩌면 좋은 생각이 아닐지도 모르겠다는 생각을 했다. 은미는 미뉴에님의 수다가 같이 흥미로와야 할 내용인지 아닌지 판단이 잘 서지 않았다. 이 주만에 수다스런 모습으로 나타난 미뉴에님이건만 은미는 흥이 나지 않았다. 은미는 평소처럼 소심하게 맞장구를 쳐주고 적당히 대화를 마감했다. 은미는 모모를 떠올렸다. 모모는 빛나는데 은미의 방은 어둡다. 지금 자야 내일 안 피곤한거야.. 할머니는 오늘 폐지를 많이 수집하지 못하셨다. 11월 같지 않은 한파가 닥쳐와 많이 돌아다니지 못하였다. 이 정도로는 돈으로 환산해봤자 얼마 되지도 않을 것이다. 고물상으로 굳이 발걸음하느니 요령껏 집에 들고 갔다가 내일 하루 더 모은 뒤 한꺼번에 정산을 하는 것이 나아 보였다. 할머니는 폐지를 좁은 마당 한쪽에 두고 집안으로 들어섰다. 은미가 저녁을 차려놓고 한쪽 방바닥에 그냥 누워 있었다. [숙제는 했고?] 은미는 신음소리같은 대답을 하고는 방안에 그대로 누워 있었다. 허공을 응시하고 있던 자신이 어색했던지 다시 일어나 습관적으로 컴퓨터를 만지작거렸다. [일찍 자거라.] 은미는 할머니의 말에 순순히 그러마고 대답했다. 할머니가 저녁식사를 마치자 은미는 설거지를 했다. 할머니는 오늘 몸이 더 노곤하다. 이부자리에 누운 할머니는 일전에 은미가 할머니가 마당에 쌓아 놓았던 폐지를 갖다 버린 기억이 나서 눈을 감은 채 은미에게 마당에 있는 폐지를 버리지 말 것을 당부하고 피곤 속으로 침잠해 들어가 잠을 청했다. 할머니의 의식이 마지막으로 생각하고 있던 것은 주말인 내일, 요즘 순해진 은미의 도움을 받아 폐지를 더 많이 모아볼까 하는 것이었다. 은미는 소란스럽게 설거지를 하며 폐지를 버리지 말라는 할머니의 부탁에 응답을 했지만 물소리에 잠긴 은미의 목소리는 이미 잠결 저편으로 사라진 할머니의 정신에 닿지 못했다. 빗소리는 아침까지 이어졌다. 비는 밤사이 줄기차게 내렸다. 은미는 눈을 떴다. 눈꺼풀과 싸우듯 여전히 노곤한 채 눈을 떴다. 잠에서 서서히 깨어날수록 빗소리는 더욱 크게 들려왔다. 할머니가 안 계신다. 은미는 현관문을 열고 바깥을 내다보았다. 할머니는 간밤에 쏟아진 비에 갈기갈기 찢어진 폐지를 멍하니 바라보고 계셨다. 처마가 없는 현관 앞, 마당이라고 하기엔 터무니없이 작은 시멘트바닥의 공간에 쭈그리고 있는 할머니의 얼굴을 타고 빗물이 뚝뚝 떨어졌다. [할머니 들어와!] 은미는 수건을 들고 가 할머니의 머리에 씌우고 할머니의 어깨를 감싸안았다.
