그리고 민주당이 얌전히 합법적인 수단만을 사용할까요? 이 시점에서 트럼프는 평화적 권력이양을 거부한 반역자입니다. 민주당은 이것이 폭정에 저항해 폭력의 사용이 정당화되는 저항권을 사용할 순간이라고 느낄 수 있습니다. 의사당 경찰은 하원의장인 낸시 펠로시와 하원의원들이 임명한 위원회들에 의해 통제됩니다. 또, 하원의장은 수위관에 질서회복을 요청할 수 있습니다. 펠로시가 하원의장에게 허락된 권력과 정치적 영향력을 최대로 발휘하고자 한다면, 또 헌정질서의 회복을 위해, 다소의 초법적 행위나 월권마저도 감수하고자 한다면 연방하원의원들을 규합하고 워싱턴 DC의 시장(2021년 1월 기준 민주당)에게 협력을 받아 경찰력을 동원해 일단 트럼프를 체포하고자 할 수 있습니다. 트럼프도 당연히 이에 대응하고자 할꺼고, 법을 집행할 능력을 가진 모든 연방기관들이 트럼프/펜스와 바이든/해리스/펠로시를 중심으로 양분되는 모습을 상상할 수 있습니다. 여기서 어떤 기관장이 누구 편을 들지는 상상하는 건 그야 말로 왕좌의 게임이죠? 그리고 이 모든 계산은 군대가 정치적 중립을 지킬 때의 이야기고요. 미국의 50개 주의 주지사와 법무장관들, 주 방위군들이 어떻게 행동할지도 생각하면 이 시나리오는 너무 혼란스럽고 흥미진진해집니다. 또한 미국 전역에는 시위와 폭동이 일어날껍니다. 양측의 지지자들이 정당한 대통령을 위해서 워싱턴으로 밀려드는 모습을 상상해보세요. 그리고 이 모든 사람들은 수정헌법 2조가 보장하는 무장할 권리가 있고, 폭력을 독점한 국가가 전례 없이 약해진 상황도요. 이게 펜스나 혹은 트럼프의 법무장관, 법무장관 대행이 트럼프에 저항하지 않았다면 벌어질 수도 있는 일이었습니다. 그리고 이 시나리오들은 어떻게 수습되어도 미국에 사회에 엄청난 충격을 줄껍니다. 전 제국으로서 미국이 무너지는 걸 상상해본 적이 없었어요. 의사당 점거 위원회의 보고서를 읽기 전에는. 여기까지 오면 상상이 너무 과격한 것 같네요. 어쩌면, 선거결과를 뒤집는 시도가 트럼프의 의도대로 모두 굴러가더라도, 다른 어떤 예상치 못한 가드레일이 트럼프를 막아서거나, 법원들의 무수한 정지명령과 연방관료들의 대대적인 항명에 못이겨 트럼프는 하루도 못 가 임기를 끝냈을 지도 모릅니다. 펜스가 트럼프에 굽혀주는 미래에서도 전 이게 가장 가능성이 높지 않나 싶어요. 의사당 폭동 당시만 하더라도 트럼프는 자기 자식들로부터도 질서를 회복해달라는 탄원을 받았을 정도로 트럼프의 편은 거의 없었으니까요. 하지만 다음에는 그런 상상을 하기가 힘듭니다. 트럼프는 이제 윌리엄 바 같은 헌법을 위해서 자신에게 항명할 사람을 법무장관으로 뽑지 않습니다. 유사시에 연방경찰들을 자신을 위해 써줄 사람을 FBI 국장에 앉힐꺼고, 자신을 위해 기꺼이 거짓말을 해줄 인물을 요직에 배치하겠죠. 이미 미국에는 트럼프를 위해 거짓말을 하고, 문서를 조작해주다가 연방감옥에 갇힌 사람들이 많이 있습니다. 이들을 사면하고 정부 요직에 앉히는 건 완전히 합법이죠. 그리고 트럼프가 이 계획을 실패한 이유의 절반은 트럼프의 무능력함에 있습니다. 트럼프보다 더 똑똑한 사람이 이런 일을 준비한다면 민주정이 살아남을 가능성은 더 희박해지겠죠? 솔직히 이런 시나리오를 써내려가는 이유의 9할 정도는 이런 상상이 무섭기 보다는 재미있기 때문이에요. 섬세한 듯 보이는 미국 정부가, 저런 무뢰한의 시도에 의해 분해되고는 왕좌의 게임을 찍는 아포칼립스로 전락한다는 게, 그리고 그게 묘하게 현실적이라는 게 너무 재밌거든요.
