굉장히 오랜만의 글정말 오랜만에 펜대를 잡았다는 것을 문득 글을 쓰기 시작하면서도 절감하게 되네요. 그것이 어느 정도냐 하면, 블로그 글을 로컬에서 띄우는 명령어가 기억이 안 나서 챗gpt에 물어봤을 정도입니다. 단순 수치상으로도 제가 마지막으로 커밋한 것이 9월 18일이었으니 거의 3개월을 꽉 채운 기간 동안 글을 쓰지 않았네요. 그래서 이번에 오랜만에 글을 쓰게 되다보니 조금은 설렙니다. 사실 글을 계속해서 쓰고 싶다는 생각은 종종 했습니다만, 이전과는 다르게 무엇을 써야할 지에 대한 아이디어가 잘 나오지 않는 것이 문제였습니다. 그런데 어제 제가 입사하면서 처음으로 맡은 프로젝트의 시제품이라 할 만한 것을 고객분들 앞에서 시연한 뒤 일단 오케이고 디테일한 부분은 맞춰나가자는 답변을 들을 수 있었고, 또 며칠 전에는 수습 기간이 종료돼서 정식으로 입사하는 경험들을 할 수 있었습니다. 그러다보니 이번에는 그동안의 생각을 정리하는 시간을 한 번 가져보고 싶어졌고, 이렇게 글로 쓰게 되었습니다. 스타트업에서 근무하는 것에 대한 생각제가 전 직장을 나온 이유 중 가장 큰 것은 외로움 때문이라는 글을 썼던 적이 있습니다. 사실 그것 외에도 전 직장을 나오게 된 주요 원인 중 하나는 제가 느끼기에 제가 가진 역량을 충분히 발휘할 수 있는 곳이 아니라고 체감해서였습니다. 그래서 이번에는 그런 부분을 고려해서 스타트업으로 이직을 결정했습니다. 확실히 스타트업에서 근무하는 것은 전직장과 비교해 많은 부분에서 차이가 있었고 제가 원하는 것을 얻을 수도 있었습니다. 저는 입사한 첫날엔 pc 세팅을 했고, 이튿날부터는 바로 프로젝트에 참여하게 되었습니다. 이 과정에서 해당 프로젝트 제품으로 만들어지던 중이었던 레거시 코드의 전반을 리팩토링하고, 재설계 및 구현을 하게 되었습니다. 이처럼 스타트업에서 근무하면서 중견 이상의 회사에서는 저와 같은 경력의 개발자에게 잘 맡기지 않을 일을 할 수 있었기 때문에, 굉장히 즐겁기도 하면서 스스로의 효용감에 대한 만족을 할 수 있었기 때문에 이번 이직은 성공적이었다고 평가할 수 있지 않을까 싶습니다. 또한 이것은 스타트업의 특징이 아니라 현 직장의 특징인데, 제가 전에 이야기한 것처럼 외로움에 대한 정의를 ‘스스로를 있는 그대로 드러내지 못할 때 느끼는 것’이라고 내린다면, 이번에는 그런 부분에서 굉장히 만족스러웠습니다. 무려 제 블로그를 읽어봐 주시고 공감을 많이했고 면접 준비에 도움을 받았다며 감사를 이야기해주신 신입사원분께서도 계셔서 뿌듯하기도 하면서 동시에 부끄럽기도 했습니다. 또, 자유롭게 의견을 주고 받으면서 서로를 이해하고 존중하는 분위기가 있었기 때문에 저는 이제 회사에서도 외롭지 않다고 느낄 수 있었습니다. 소통을 할 때 정리된 내용을 명징한 언어로 전달하는 필요성의 체감제가 업무를 하면서 가장 많이 들은 지적 두 가지는 ‘명확한 언어로 표현하기’와 ‘이야기하기 전에 하고자 하는 말을 정리하기’ 였습니다. 그리고 이 두가지가 업무를 할 때 선결조건이며 이를 지키는 것만으로도 업무 효율이 굉장히 높아진다는 것을 체감할 수 있었습니다. 전자의 예시로는 대명사를 가능한 적게 사용하고 말하고자하는 대상을 명확히 지칭하거나, 정확한 단어를 사용하는 것이 있습니다. 대명사가 아니라 대상을 대화 상대가 명료하게 인식할 수 있는 단어들로 표현하는 과정을 통해서 스스로도 무엇을 말하고자 하는지 선명하게 인지할 수 있었고, 상대방도 무엇을 말하고자 하는지 명확히 이해할 수 있었습니다. 후자의 예시로는 이야기하기 전에 어느 정도 수준의 이야기를 할 것인지 결정하고, 그에 맞게 이야기를 정리하는 것이 있습니다. 대화를 할 때 내가 대화를 할 상대가 누구이고 내용이 무엇인지 고려하는 준비를 하는 것은 이전까지는 제가 생각하고 신경쓰지 않았던 부분이었습니다. 그런데 이번에는 대화의 수준을 가장 낮은 개발 구현 수준부터 시작해서, 코드를 아예 고려하지 않은 비즈니스 로직과 같은 수준까지 다르게 구분하여 대화를 경험하게 되는 일이 잦았습니다. 이 과정에서 한 가지 관점에서 이야기할 때는 보이지 않던 것들을 인식할 수 있었고, 이를 통해 문제를 해결하는 데에 도움을 받을 수 있었습니다. 한 문장으로 표현하자면 ‘개발자여, 키보드가 아니라 펜과 종이를 들어라’라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 위 두가지 원칙을 지키면서 업무를 진행하다보니, 이전에는 무엇을 말하고자 하는지 명확히 인지하지 못했던 것들이 명확해졌고 원활한 소통을 할 수 있었습니다. 그리고 이러한 소통이 업무 효율을 높이는 데에 굉장히 큰 도움이 되었다고 생각합니다. 마치며스타트업으로 이직을 하고 보낸 이번 3개월동안 굉장히 밀도가 높은 시간을 보냈고 동시에 제가 원하던 것들을 얻었으며, 생각하지 못했던 방향으로도 성장할 수 있었기 때문에 굉장히 만족스러운 경험이었습니다. 이번에는 제가 했던 경험들 중에서 일반적인 것들을 정리했다면, 다음은 좀 더 개발자로서의 경험을 중심으로 이야기해볼까 합니다. 읽어주셔서 감사합니다.
