International Journal of Disability, Development and Education, 54(4), 381-397. // 숨쉴 짬이 나서 연재로 돌아왔습니다. 시간이 얼마 없으니 간단하게만 풀어봅니다. // 들어가며 연구들은 장애를 지닌 학생들이 낮은 사회적 상호작용, 제한된 친구관계, 낮은 사회적 수용, 부족한 사회적 기술, 그리고 제도권 학교에서 사회적 상호작용을 시도했을 때 부정적인 반응을 경험하게 될지도 모른다고 보고합니다. 사회적 역량은 대개 사회적 상호작용에서 한 학생이 보이는 성과의 일반적인 질로 정의됩니다. 따라서 사회적 역량을 측정하면 학교에서 사회화 과정에서 어려움을 겪는 학생들을 파악하고, 이러한 위험군 학생에게 적절한 지원을 제공할 수 있게 하지요. 사회적 역량은 다양한 요인들을 포함하지만, 그 중에서 사회적 기술의 활용과 발달이 핵심적입니다. 사회적 기술은 의사소통, 문제해결, 자기주장, 동료 상호작용 등을 포함하는데, 좋은 사회적 관계를 발전시키고 유지하는데 중요합니다. 이 연구는 신체적 장애를 지닌 학생들의 사회적 기술 발달에 연관된 이론적 모델들을 데이터로 검증하고자 합니다. 선행 연구들을 토대로, 장애의 심각성, 부모의 태도, 부모의 관여, 가족 관계, 교사 의견을 중요 특징들로 선별했습니다. 보다 구체적으로는, 1) 보다 심각한 장애일수록 낮은 사회 기술 발달과 부모 관여 증가와 2) 보다 긍정적인 부모의 태도는 아이 교육에의 부모 관여 증가와, 3) 건강한 부모 관여는 보다 발전된 사회적 기술과, 4) 그리고 긍정적 태도를 지닌 교사는 보다 발전된 사회적 기술과 관련이 있을 것으로 이론적(인과관계) 모델을 세웠지요. 추가 설명 논문 본문에서는 상기한 인과관계 모델을 선행연구들을 바탕으로 상세하게 기술합니다. 이는 이 연구에서 차용한 구조방정식(structural equation modelling) 모델이 일반적인 다중 회귀 모델과는 다르게 영향력의 인과성을 모델링에 포함하기 때문이고, 또 이 인과관계를 뒷받침하기 위한 이론적 틀을 논리적/경험적 근거를 통해 최대한 강건하게 세울 것을 요구하기 때문이기도 합니다. 이론적 모델을 데이터에 적합시켜 그 일반화 가능성 여부와 인과관계의 크기를 확인하는 방법론 특성 때문에, 연구 결과는 특정 이론을 주어진 데이터를 가지고 살펴봤을 때 괜찮다고 할 수 있는가에 중점이 되며, 이 이론이 (이론이 내포하는 인과관계 설명과 구조가) 정말로 타당한가는 또 별개의 문제가 됩니다. 방법 구조방정식을 썼고, LISREL 8.30* (Jöreskog & Sörbom, 1999)을 썼습니다. * 구조방정식 분석을 위한 통계적 도구는 여럿이 있는데, 각자의 주요한 차이 중 하나는 인과관계를 가정하기에 생겨나는 모델링에서의 과잉식별 문제를 해결하기 위한 최적화 방법이 있습니다. 때문에 어떤 통계적 도구를 썼느냐에 따라 결과가 달라지는 경우가 생깁니다. 연구의 배경은 오스트레일리아입니다. 자료는 무작위 표집 대신 편의 표집 기법을 (장애라는 연구 주제의 특성 때문으로 추정되는) 사용하여, 참여 의사가 있는 가족 지원 단체들을 통해 데이터를 수집했습니다. 부모에게 먼저 설문을 실시한 후, 부모를 통해 파악한 자식의 정보를 바탕으로 교사와 접촉하여 교사에게 설문을 진행했습니다. 한 가정당 한 명의 부모만이 설문에 참여했고, 총 212명의 부모와 170명의 교사가 참여했습니다. 자녀의 사회적 기술은 교사가 Gresham와 Elliot (1990)이 개발한 사회적 기술 평정 척도 (Social Skills Rating System; SSRS)를 바탕으로 측정했습니다. 사회적 행위의 발생 빈도를 바탕으로 측정했으며, 점수는 0점에서 60점 사이에서 매겨졌습니다. 측정은 협력, 자기 통제, 자기 주장(assertion)이라는 세 가지 영역에서 이루어졌습니다. 협력은 과제를 시도하는 것과 같이 행동을 공유하고 규칙을 준수하는 것을, 자기 통제는 놀림을 받았을 때 적절하게 대응하는 등 갈등 상황에서의 행동을, 자기 주장은 친구를 사귀거나 대화를 시작하는 등 다른 아이들과 접촉을 시작하는 것을 가리킵니다. 그 외 다른 측정 방식들에 대한 설명은 생략합니다. 결과 자료의 기술적 특징 중 일부 부모의 응답에 따르자면, 부모들은 제도권 학교에 자녀를 다니게 하는 것에 대해 긍정적인 태도를 지니고 있었습니다. 통합이 바람직한 교육 행위라 생각하는 부모가 92%였지요. 89%는 제도권 학교에서의 통합 교육이 자녀가 실제 세상을 살아가도록 돕는다고 응답했고요. 다만 55%의 부모는 교사들이 신체장애를 지닌 학생들을 돕는 적절한 역량이 부족하다고, 48%는 자녀들이 교실에서 충분한 도움을 받지 못한다고, 49%는 자녀들이 교실에서 소외되고 있다고 응답했지요. 자녀들의 사회적 기술에 대한 교사들의 측정에 따르면, 교사들은 전반적으로 평균 이상의, 그리고 자기 통제나 협력에서 평균 이상의 점수를 매겼습니다. 하지만 자기 주장 능력은 상대적으로 낮게 측정되었고요. 미국의 기준 데이터와 직접적으로 비교하면 오스트레일리아 학생들의 자기 주장 능력이 부족한걸로 보이지만, 오스트레일리아와 미국의 직접적인 비교가 힘들다는 점을 생각할 필요가 있습니다. 교사 의견 데이터는, 통합이 수용과 이해를 촉진하고, 신체적 장애를 지닌 학생들이 다른 아이들에게 수용되는 것이 긍정적인 결과를 낳으리라는 응답을 보였지만, 하지만 통합이 신체 장애를 지닌 학생들의 학업 성취에 도움이 될지에 대해서는 상대적으로 덜 긍정적인 응답을 보였고, 자신들이 신체장애를 지닌 학생들을 가르치기 위한 적절한 훈련을 받지 못했다는 의견을 보였습니다. 모델링 결과 초기에 제시된 모델은 데이터의 분포를 설명하는데 실패했습니다. 저자들은 모델을 수정하면서 데이터에 적합될 수 있는 새로운 설명을 찾아냈지요. 예를 들자면, 가족 관계는 초창기에 부모 관여에만 직접적인 영향력을 미칠 것으로 모델링 되었지만, 부모 관여 대신 자녀의 사회적 기술과 부모의 태도에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 수정되었지요. 이런 모델링의 변화를 상세히 기술하는 것이 중요하기는 한데, 저작권 문제도 있고 하니 여기서는 생략합니다. 수정된 모델은 자녀의 사회적 기술의 분산의 30% 정도를 설명하는 것으로 나타났습니다. 개별 요인들의 영향력에 대한 분석에 따르면, 1) 가족 관계와 사회적 기술은 긍정적이고 유의한 관계를 보이고 (.20, p < .05), 2) 교사 의견과 사회적 기술 또한 긍정적이고 유의한 관계를 보이고 (.49, p < .01), 3) 장애 정도와 부모 관여는 긍정적이고 유의한 관계를 보였습니다 (.22, p < .01), 하지만 부모 태도와 부모 관여, 장애 정도와 사회적 기술, 부모 관여와 사회적 기술, 가족 관계와 부모 태도의 관계는 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났지요. 논의 - 그래서 어쩌라고?
