| Subject | 구직을 마무리하며 - 많은 분들에게 감사했던 시간 |
길고 힘들었지만 즐겁고 값졌던 6개월6개월여의 여정을 마치고 그저께 최종 합격 소식을 필두로 백엔드 개발자로써 구직을 마무리하게 됐습니다. 이 글을 쓰는 지금도 여전히 믿기지 않지만, 이제는 새로운 회사에서 새로운 도전을 시작하게 됐네요. 제가 워낙에 많은 분들께 도움을 받아서 이런 결과를 얻을 수 있었던 것이기 때문에 가능하면 지금 이 순간에 구직으로 고생하고 있는 분들에게 조금이나마 도움이 되었으면 하는 마음으로 키보드의 무거운 활자를 두들겨볼까 합니다. 방향의 설정이 가장 중요하다요즈음 제 나이대의 사람들, 소위 mz세대라고 불리는 사람들이 실업율이 높다는 이야기를 종종 듣곤 합니다. 가장 근본적인 원인은 대우가 좋은 회사가 모자란 것에 있겠지만 정작 그런 회사에 들어간 사람들의 퇴사율도 낮지 않은 것을 보면 높은 실업율에는 다른 이유가 있을 것이라고 생각하고, 저는 그것이 방향의 설정에 있을 것이라고 생각합니다. 회사와 개인 양측에 말이죠. 일과 관련한 유명한 우화중에 성당을 짓는 인부들의 이야기가 있습니다. 성당을 짓는 인부들에게 그들이 무엇을 하느냐는 질문을 했을 때 벽돌을 쌓고 있다고 대답하는 사람과 성당을 짓고 있다고 대답한 사람에 대한 이야기가 바로 그것입니다. 그리고 이 우화는 사람들이 자신이 하는 일에 대한 방향을 설정하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 보여주는 좋은 예시라고 생각합니다. 성당을 짓고 있다고 생각하는 사람은 자신이 하는 일이 어떤 의미를 가지고 있기 때문에 그 일을 하면서 느끼는 피로감이나 힘든 점들을 이겨낼 수 있습니다. 반면 벽돌을 쌓고 있다고 생각하는 사람은 그 일을 하면서 느끼는 피로감이나 힘든 점들을 이겨내기 어렵습니다. 물론 돈을 많이 받고 대우가 좋다면 하루 종일 벽돌을 쌓는 것도 좋다고 생각하시는 분들도 있겠지만, 저는 자신의 성당을 짓는 사람이 되고 싶습니다. 멋있잖아요? 내가 만든 나만의 성당이 있는 사람. 그리고 이런 식으로 나는 어떤 사람인가를 생각하고, 그에 맞는 방향을 설정하는 것이 가장 중요하다고 생각합니다. 내가 추구하는 삶은 무엇인가, 이 질문에 대한 답을 하는 것은 쉽지 않지만 그 답이 내려지면 구직과 관련한 나머지 과정은 시간이 해결해주게 돼 있습니다. 저 같은 경우에는 나를 온전히 드러내고 이를 이해받을 수 있는 사람들과 함께하는 삶을 살고 싶었습니다. 그래서 저는 부끄럽거나 공개하는 것이 구직에 있어서 해가 될 수 있는 이야기들도 가능한 감추지 않고 드러내는 것을 지향했습니다. 그것은 블로그에 글을 쓰는 것이나, 제가 가장 사랑하는 커뮤니티들에 해당 글을 공유하고 이에 대한 이야기를 나누는 것을 통해 주로 이뤄졌습니다. 모자람을 인정하고 도움을 받기지금 시점에서 돌아본 5개월 전의 저는 미숙한 점 투성이었습니다. 단순히 일을 하는 데 필요한 다양한 프로그래밍 기술이나 지식이 부족한 것은 기본이고, 내 생각을 어떻게 표현해야 하는지나 다른 사람에게 자신을 어필하는 방법과 같은 다양한 부분에서 많이 부족했습니다. 만약 이런 모자란 부분을 혼자서 극복하려 했으면 저는 아직도 제 부족함을 메우고 장점을 강조하는 방법을 찾지 못했을 것이라고 생각합니다. 저 같은 경우는 이것이 제게 내재돼있지 않은 것을 안으로 끌어들이는 일이기 때문에 다른 사람들에게 도움을 받아야 한다고 생각했습니다. 그 도움에는 책이나 강의, 커뮤니티, 오프라인 친구와 같은 다양한 형태가 있었습니다. 저는 특히 커뮤니티에서 많은 도움을 받았습니다. 커뮤니티에서는 다양한 사람들이 다양한 경험을 가지고 있기 때문에 내가 겪고 있는 문제를 해결하는 데 도움을 받을 수 있었습니다. 그리고 비교적 객관적인 시각으로 내가 겪고 있는 문제를 바라볼 수 있었기 때문에 더욱 효과적이었습니다. 이런저런 주제에 대한 대화를 나누고 글의 내용이나 작성 방식을 수정하거나, 제가 겪고 있는 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시 받는 것은 저에게 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그런 행운을 누릴 수 있었던 것은 제가 사랑하는 커뮤니티들이 도움을 주고자 하는 열정과 능력이 넘치는 분들로 가득했기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 힘들땐 잠시 쉬어 가기저는 이번에 주니어 백엔드 개발자로 지원하는 과정에서 본 면접이 30회가 넘었고 그 중 최종 면접은 다섯번이었습니다. 이 중에 제가 면접 이후에 전형을 취소한 소수와 전형의 전부가 1차 면접이었던 한 번을 제외하고는 전부 탈락했습니다. 이 밖에도 각종 코딩 테스트나 과제 전형을 탈락한 횟수도 아마 셀 수 없을 것 같네요. it 업계는 변화의 속도가 빠르고 특히 ai 기술 발전에 적응하는 과정에서 더 복잡해지고 있는 만큼 전형이 어려워지는 것은 당연한 수순이라고 생각합니다. 그렇기 때문에 이런 과정에서 지쳐 무너지지 않기 위해서는 힘들 때 잠시 쉬어 가는 것이 중요하다고 저는 생각합니다. 가벼운 조깅이나 산책을 나가고, 친한 사람과 가볍게 잡담을 나누거나, 취미 생활을 즐기는 것도 좋은 방법이 될 수 있습니다. 좀 많이 지쳤다면 몇 주 정도는 구직을 잠시 멈추고 다른 일을 하거나 쉬어가는 시간을 가지는 경험 역시도 저는 추천합니다. 이런 휴식을 통해 다시 한 번 자신의 방향을 확인하고, 그 방향으로 나아가기 위한 에너지를 충전할 수 있기 때문입니다. 나를 필요로 하는 곳이 하나쯤은 있겠지제가 이번에 합격이 된 이유에는 여러 가지가 있겠지만, 기술 이사님께서 말씀하신 것 중에 제가 회사의 규모가 커지는 과정에서 안정을 추구할 때 불안정을 가져다 줄 수 있는 사람이라 생각하기 때문에 이 회사에 필요하다고 판단했다는 말씀이 가장 기억에 남습니다. 사실 이 부분은 제가 다른 회사들에서 면접을 볼 때 최종 면접을 탈락하게 되는 주요 이유 중 하나였기 때문입니다. 이처럼 경기가 불안정한 요즈음이더라도 포기하지 않고 박치기를 계속 하다보면 언젠가는 나를 필요로 해서 원하는 곳이나 사람과 만날 수 있을 것이라고 저는 믿습니다. 물론 이렇게 말해 놓고 막상 얼마 다니지 않고 그만둘 수도 있다는 암울한 가능성 및 이 글이 흑역사가 될 수도 있기는 하지만, 만약 그렇게 되더라도 그 역시도 나중 가면 웃어 넘길 수 있는 일이 되지 않을까 싶습니다. 마치며아직도 제가 구직을 마무리했고 다음 주부터 새로운 회사에 출근하게 될 것이란 사실이 믿기지 않네요. 아직 이루지 못한 것이나 미숙한 점이 많이 있지만 그것은 제 인생이라는 프로젝트의 마감일이 올 때까지 끊임없이 괴로워하며 달성하기 위해 노력해야 할 이슈들이라고 생각합니다. 제 프로젝트의 마일스톤을 하나 겨우 남들이 도와줘서 넘어선 지금 이 순간에, 이 글을 읽고 있는 분들께서도 혹시 비슷한 상황에 처해있다면 조금이나마 도움이 되었으면 하는 마음으로 이 글을 마칩니다. 읽어주셔서 감사합니다.
