저는 어릴 때부터 혼자 있는 걸 좋아했습니다. 학교에 가기 전부터 쭉 그랬고, 지금도 기본적으로 그렇습니다. 그렇다고 사람을 싫어하냐 하면 그건 또 아닌게, 쭉 혼자 있으면 외롭다고 느끼는 순간이 꼭 찾아오기 때문입니다. 하지만 이런 ‘외롭다’는 감정을 느끼게 된 지는 얼마 되지 않았습니다. 지금도 대학생이지만, 수년 전쯤 처음 대학에 입학하고 이후 몇년까지도 전혀 그런 감정을 느끼지도 않았을 뿐더러, 오히려 연애를 포함한 인간관계에 애쓰는 것을 부질없거나 왜 그렇게까지 하는지 이해는 할지언정 공감하지는 못했습니다. 왜 그렇게 되었는가 생각해 보았을 때 떠오르는 몇가지 이유는 다음과 같습니다. 첫째로, 저는 아주 친한 사람이 아닌 이상 (때때로 그런 사람조차) 사람을 대하는 것이 부담스럽습니다. 모두들 어느정도는 공감하는 이야기라고 생각하지만 저의 경우 사람들을 대하는 요령이 없기 때문에, 그리고 그로 말미암아 생긴 부정적 경험들로 인해 특히 낯선 사람들 앞에서 굉장히 위축되는 것 같습니다. 사람은 기본적으로 남들에게 미움받고 싶어하지 않는 게 당연하지만, 저는 타인에게 미움받지 않기 위해서만 행동하는 경향이 강한 듯 합니다. 이는 곧 잘 알지 못하는 사람과의 관계가 압박과 스트레스로 다가오고, 결과적으로 관계 자체를 꺼리게 됩니다. 사람들과 친하게 지내기 위해 하는 행동들이 오히려 저를 깎아먹어서 역효과를 낸달까요. 그러고 보면 확실히 사람들과 친해지고 싶어하는 욕망은 있는 것 같습니다. 두번째 이유는 첫번째 이유에서 파생되는 것인데, 사람들과의 관계가 피곤하기 때문에 자꾸 다른 것으로 도피하려고 했습니다. 이 역시 어릴 때부터 그래왔고, 비단 인간관계에서뿐만 아니라 삶의 여러 문제로부터 도망치기 위해 저는 주로 ‘게임’이라는 수단을 자주, 너무 자주 사용해 왔습니다. 물론 게임 자체가 재미있기 때문이기도 했지만, 도피를 위한 게임들도 분명 많았다고 생각합니다. 그 덕분에 한때 업으로 삼을 정도로 깎아내어 좋은 기회와 경험들을 얻을 수 있었지만, 이렇게 여러가지 문제에 회피라는 편하고 나쁜 해결책으로 일관해 온 대가를, 나이를 먹어가면서 뼈저리게 치르고 있다고 생각합니다. 이를테면 그 시간동안 했을 어린 시절의 미숙한 고민들과, 그 해결을 위한 도전과 성공, 심지어는 실패를 경험하지 못했기 때문에 저는 그야말로 나이만 먹은 어른이 되어있는 것 같다고 최근들어 너무나도 자주 느낍니다. 그러던 저에게도 사랑하는 사람이 생긴 때가 있었습니다. 다른 요인들도 있었지만, 그 사람만은 누구에게도 이해받지 못할거라고 생각하던 저를 너무나도 잘 이해해주었기 (최소한 그런 노력을 기울였기)때문입니다. 주변 사람들은 저를 좋은 경청자라고 여기는 듯 했습니다만, 정작 제 이야기를 경청해줄 사람은 없다고 항상 느끼고 있었기 때문일지도 모르겠습니다. 이 이야기도 자세히 풀면 길어지지만 글의 주제와는 상관 없으므로 이 관계가 어떻게 되었는지만 이야기하자면, 저는 그 관계를 통해 사람이 심리적으로 너무 아프면 물리적으로도 아플 수 있다는 걸 처음 깨달았습니다. 그리고 아마 그때부터였던 것 같습니다. 세상에 나를 이해해 줄 수 있는 사람은 전혀 없을거라 생각하고 체념하며 살고 있던 때, 꼭 그렇지만은 않다는 희망만을 남겨두고 끝나버린 그 관계 이후로 저는 끊임없이 그런 사람을 갈망하고 있습니다. 그래서 더욱 사람들과 부대끼려 노력하지만 그렇다고 없던 사회성이 생겨나지는 않더군요. 나름대로 이 절망적인 사회성을 해결하고자 여러가지 시도나 고민은 해봤습니다만 만족스러운 변화는 없는 것 같습니다. 더욱이 요즘은 유학 생활과 겹쳐 말이 잘 안 통하는 친구들이 많다보니 더 힘든 것 같습니다. 어려운 문제들이 이 밖에도 많이 있지만 특히 이건 어떡해야 좋을지 도통 모르겠습니다. 인생 선배님들의 조언을 살짝 바라며 글 마칩니다. 일단 요즘 드는 생각과 그에 관한 고찰을 써내려보기는 했습니다만 정말 두서없고 마무리도 흐지부지한, 장황한 푸념글이 되어버렸네요… 가입인사의 연장선으로 그냥 이런 사람이다 정도의 소개글로 봐주셔도 좋습니다. 그냥 어디 이런걸 말할 사람도 없고, 글로 한 번 정리해보고 싶다는 생각에 새벽 감성으로 올려는 봅니다만, 일어나서 부끄러워지면 지우겠습니다… 끝까지 읽어주신 분들께 감사드립니다. 수정: 너무 사적인 얘기를 한거같아 부끄럽지만 여러 회원분들이 도움을 많이 주셨고, 다른 분들께도 도움이 될까 싶어 글 남겨둡니다. 개인적으로 저도 그런 외로움에 대해 고민이 많았고, 그에 대한 제가 내린 답은 이해받지 못하는 것을 두려워하지 않고 자신을 드러내려 해야한다는 원론적인 답이라 할 수 있을 것 같네요.
집에서 가족들과 소통하고 싶으면 방 문을 열고 지내라, 타인에게 이해받고 싶으면 이해받지 못할 것을 상정하고 다름을 인정해주는 사람과 함께하려고 노력하면 어느 정도 이에 대한 해결책이 되지 않을까 하는게 아마 글쓴이 분보다는 조금 더 산 제가 요즘 하고 있는 생각입니다. 물론 이 역시도 지나고 보면 생각... 더 보기
