진정한 나로 있는다는 것목차
2년 전 5월에 퇴사를 하다저는 2년 전인 2022년 5월, 졸업 후 1년 반에 걸친 구직 기간 끝에 취업에 성공한 회사를 1년 반이 조금 안 되는 시간을 다닌 끝에 퇴사했습니다. 그 이유가 일반적으로 말하는 사람들의 불만 때문은 아니었습니다. 회식 문화가 과하다든가, 업무가 많아 퇴근을 못한다든가, 야근도 많은데 포괄임금제였던 것도 아니었습니다. 오히려 팀원 분들은 친절하셨고, 업무 강도도 약했던데다가, 급여는 만족스러웠고 그 밖에 각종 복지도 좋았던 꽤나 훌륭한 회사였다고 생각합니다. 실제로 제 동기들 중에서 퇴사한 사람은 저 밖에 없었습니다. 그렇지만 저는 그 회사를 다니는 시간이 너무 아쉽고 불행했다고 느꼈기 때문에, 어렵게 구했던 직장이고 이만한 곳에 다시 들어가기 힘들고 커리어에 손해가 될 것이란 사실을 알았지만 오랜 고민 끝에 퇴사를 결심했습니다. 당시에 저는 그 원인이 회사의 업무 강도가 지나치게 약해 제가 원하는 성장 욕구를 채워주지 못하는 부분 때문이라 생각했지만, 제가 그 때 그렇게 의욕 넘치게 배움을 갈망하고 있었던 것은 아니었기에 동시에 그것이 아니란 사실도 은연중에는 알고 있었습니다. 그렇게 제대로 된 이유를 모른 채, 제 첫 직장과의 인연은 찰나에 끝이 났습니다. 같이 있다고 해서 외롭지 않은 것은 아니다최근에 본 유튜브 영상 중에 조승연 작가와 장동선 박사가 찍은 한국인이 왜 외로운지에 대해 뇌과학적으로, 그리고 인문학적으로 이야기하는 영상이 있었습니다. 해당 영상에서 말하는 외로움은 일반적으로 생각하는 것과는 거리가 멀었고 제가 알고 있던 것과도 많이 달랐지만, 동시에 많은 공감을 할 수 밖에 없는 그런 것이었습니다. 일반적으로 외로움이라고 하면 떠올리는 이미지는 혼자 있는 것, 사람이 없는 것, 사람들과 소통이 없는 것 등이 있습니다. 그런데 신기한 것은 한국 사람들은 전 세계에서 집에 있을 때 혼자 있는 것을 가장 좋아하는 사람들이라는 것입니다. 분명 혼자 있으면 외롭고 같이 있으면 행복해야 할 텐데, 정작 한국 사람들은 혼자 있을 때가 가장 행복하고 편안하다고 말합니다. 왜 그럴까요? 그 이유를 해당 영상에서는 함께 있다는 것과 외롭지 않은 것이 동치가 아니기 때문이라 말합니다. 그렇다면 외로움이란 무엇일까요? 어떨 때 우리는 외롭다고 느끼는 걸까요? 무엇이 우리를 다른 사람과 있을 때 외롭게 만드는 걸까요? 이에 대한 정답으로 장동선 박사와 조승연 작가는 '외로움은 진정한 자신을 드러내지 못할 때 느끼는 것'이라고 말합니다. 다른 사람이 나를 어떻게 생각할 지에 대해 의식하고 자신을 꾸며내는 일을 집 밖에서도 하지만, 집 안에 들어와서도 계속해야하기 때문에 우리는 집에서도 혼자 있게 돼서야 외롭지 않게 되고 자기 자신으로 있을 수 있다 말합니다. 저는 그 이야기를 듣고 제 자신의 삶을 되돌아보며, 제가 여기에서 말하는 외로운 사람의 정의에 부합하는 사람이었으며 제가 겪었던 감정들이 외로움이라 해석하는 것을 부정할 수 없다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 저는 집에서도, 밖에서도 외로웠습니다2년 전의 저는 그런 의미에서 굉장히 외로웠고, 심지어 제가 외롭다는 사실을 인지하지도 못했어서 최악인 상태였습니다. 그 때의 저는 회사, 집, 외부, 그 어느 곳에서도 다른 사람들이 나를 어떻게 생각할 지에 대해 의식하고 그에 맞게 행동하고 있었습니다. 분명 어디에 있든 사람들과 소통하면서 웃고 떠들고 있었기 때문에 외로운 사람이라고 생각하지 않았지만, 그것은 사실이 아니었습니다. 저는 그 가족을 포함한 그 누구와 있을 때도 저 자신으로 있지 못했습니다. 앞의 영상에서 두 분은 진정한 자신으로 있는 것을 통해 외로움을 극복하기 위해서는 다양하고 다른 것을 인정하고 받아들이는 환경이 필요하다고 이야기합니다. 그리고 한국은 시스템이 너무 잘 갖춰져 있어 많은 것들이 예측 가능하기 때문에 다양성을 받아들이기 어렵다고 말합니다. MBTI와 같이 너가 누구냐에 대해서도 단순히 16가지로 분류해놓고 그 사람의 행동을 예측하려고 하는 것이 크게 유행하고 있는 것도 다른 사람의 행동이라는 복잡한 것을 통제하려는 욕망에서 나온 것이 아닌가 저는 생각합니다. 저는 어려서부터 남들하고 다르니까 그걸 의식해서 남들과 비슷하게 보이려고 노력해야한다는 이야기를 집에서 많이 들으면서 자랐습니다. '네가 남들하고 다른건 알지?' '네가 언제까지 게임하고 만화 볼 것 같애? 다 나이 먹으면 그만할 건데 적당히 해라.' '그렇게 게임할 거면 차라리 내가 돈을 줄 테니까 집을 나가서 살아' 등등, 제가 집에서 들었던 말들은 제가 가진 개성을 부정하는 것들이었기에 저는 집에 있을 때 가장 외로웠고 문을 닫고 혼자 있을 때가 가장 행복했습니다. 그리고 제가 이런 이야기를 들어서 괴롭다는 이야기를 할 상대도 아무도 없었습니다. 저는 그렇게 안팎으로 외로움으로 썩어들어가고 있었습니다. 저는 이제 더이상 외롭지 않습니다퇴사를 한 이후에 저는 이전의 저라면 만나지 않았을 다양한 사람을 만나게 됐습니다. 그리고 그것은, 아마도 제 인생에서 만난 가장 큰 행운이자 축복 중 하나입니다. 주로 온라인을 통해서이긴 했습니다만, 예를 들면 우마무스메 프리티 더비를 같이 플레이했던 단톡방 멤버 분들처럼, 저와 마찬가지로 서브컬쳐 장르를 좋아하는 분들 같이 제가 가지고 있었던 다양한 관심사를 당당하게 드러낼 수 있는 사람들과 함께 있었기 때문에 지난 2년간은 외롭지 않고 너무나 행복한 나날들이었습니다. 그리고 그런 곳이었기 때문에 제가 평소에 가지고 있었던 관심사 외에 남들에게 이야기하지 못했던 괴로웠던 비밀들에 대해서도 이야기할 수 있었고, 이를 진심으로 공감하고 들어주는 분들을 만날 수 있었습니다. 그렇게 저를 받아들여주는 분들이 있는 장소에서 시간을 보낼 수 있었기 때문에 저 스스로도 다른 사람들을 받아들여줄 수 있게 되었고, 저는 이제 더이상 외롭지 않습니다. 앞으로 내가 새로운 회사에 기대하는 것너무 무리인 바람일지도 모르겠습니다만, 저는 새로운 회사에 가서는 이전의 저처럼 외로움을 느끼지 않았으면 좋겠습니다. 진정한 저를 받아들일 수 있는 다양한 사람을 수용하는 문화가 있었으면 좋겠습니다. 물론 이제는 제게도 밖에서 돌아오면 저를 받아줄 수 있는 따뜻한 공간이 있다는 것을 알고 있긴 하지만, 회사가 인생에서 차지하는 비중을 생각하면 회사에서 외롭지 않은 것이 제 인생이 얼마나 외롭지 않았느냐를 결정하는 데에 가장 큰 요소 중 하나라는 것은 부정할 수 없기 때문입니다. 그리고 그러기 위해서는 우선 저부터 다른 사람을 받아들일 수 있는 사람이 되려고 노력하고자 합니다. 다른 사람에게 진정으로 관심을 가지고 이야기를 들어주며 공감하는 사람으로써 주변 사람들이 외롭지 않을 수 있는 안전한 공간이 되어주고 싶습니다. 그래서 저처럼 외롭지만 외롭다는 사실조차 모르는 사람들이 제 덕분에 외롭지 않게 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 마무리외로움은 건강에 엄청나게 안 좋다는 결과들이 속속들이 나오는 중입니다. 극단적으로는 외로움이 매일 담배를 15개피 피는 것 만큼이나 건강에 치명적이라고도 이야기합니다. 그런 상황에서 한국이 전 세계에서 가장 외로운 나라라는 것은 우리 주변 사람들이 사실 알아채지 못했지만 많이들 아프고 괴로운 것이라 생각합니다. 2년 전의 제가 그랬듯이 말입니다. 모두에게 진정한 자신을 드러낼 수 있는 안식처가 하나 쯤은 있기를, 그리고 없다면 생겨나는 축복이 함께하기를 바랍니다. 자기 자신으로 있을 수 있다는 건 어떤 의미인가. 스스로에게 솔직하고, 내 정체성을 깨달아 그것을 좇는 삶 정도일까요?
글을 읽으면서 저는 가면을 쓴 삶이 스스로를 외롭게 하는 건가 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 가면이 꼭 나쁜 의미는 아니죠. 필요할 때가 있으니까요. 누구나 몇개쯤 갖고 있잖아요. 사회인, 부모, 자식, 남성/여성으로서의 나. 근데 그게 나한테 안 맞고 불편할 수 있으니 벗고 혼자 있을 때가 편한 거죠.
연예인들이 어느날 갑자기 방송생활에 허무함?을 느끼고 그만두는 경우도 종종 보는데 본문대로라면 그것도 외로움때... 더 보기
