떡볶이는 좋지만, 더덕 구이는 싫은걸한국은 어려서부터 편식하지 않을 것을 미덕으로 삼는 문화을 갖추고 있습니다. 1인당 전세계 채소 섭취량이 무려 2위라는 이야기도 있을 정도이니, 부모님들의 노고가 빛을 발하고 있는 모양입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 채소를 먹기 싫어하는 사람은 여전히 많습니다. 제가 아는 모 여학생은 이제 나이 스물이 다 돼가지만 고기 반찬이 없으면 밥을 먹지 않고, 제육볶음을 먹을 때 채소 비율이 반을 넘어가면 손을 대지 않습니다. 그런데 그 여학생이 고기 한 점 없어도 없어서 못 먹는 음식이 있습니다. 그것이 바로 떡볶이입니다. 그런데 문제는 요즘 수많은 미디어에서 선전하듯 떡볶이는 정제 탄수화물과 단순당에 나트륨 덩어리인 식품이라 몸에 좋지 못하단 것입니다. 그에 반해 더덕 구이 같은 채소는 모두들 입을 모아 먹어야하는 좋은 음식입니다. 물론 사람의 대부분이 채소가 아니라 고기를 더 좋아하는 것이 사실입니다. 그럼에도 채소를 더욱 싫어하게 되는 이유는 어린 시절 강제로 채소를 먹는 경험을 통해 '싫어하는 것', 혹은 '억지로 해야하는 것'이라는 인식이 자리잡았기 때문일지도 모릅니다. 저자는 한국의 공부 문화가 그렇게 자리잡아가고 있는 세태에 대해 걱정하는 마음에 이 책을 썼습니다. 한국의 공부가 입시와 취업으로 환원되지 않을 경우에는 무의미한 것으로 받아들여지고 있기 때문에 공부 자체가 하기 싫은 것으로 인식되고 있고, 공부가 가져다 줄 수 있는 잘 양념된 삶을 이루지 못하고 있는 것이 걱정되기 때문입니다. 국내 최고의 공부 중독자이자 제가 가장 좋아하는 에세이 작가인 김영민 교수님은 이를 위해 공부란 무엇이고, 어떤 것을 공부해야하며, 어떻게, 왜 공부해야하는지와 같은 질문을 제기합니다. 그리고 이에 대해 독자와 대화를 통해 토론하고 본인이 생각하는 답에 대한 제시를 한 뒤 독자 스스로의 답을 제시하기를 바랍니다. 공부는 지적인 근육 트레이닝이다세상에 모든 것들은 독특합니다만, 그 중에서도 인간만한 동물은 드물다고 생각합니다. 그리고 헬스장에 가면 그 특이함의 끝이 무엇인가에 대해 엿볼 수 있다고 생각합니다. 온 몸이 상기된 상태로 신음을 내면서 "한 번만 더...!"를 외치는 사람들. 그들은 온 몸을 땀으로 적셔가며 숨을 헐떡이고, 자신의 근육을 찢어내는 고통을 스스로 추구하는 구도자들입니다. 그런데 신기한 일은 그들이 그런 고통을 즐긴다는 사실입니다. 그들이 이런 괴로움을 추구하는 것은 아픔 그 자체를 즐거워하기 때문은 아닙니다. 다만 그 괴로움을 경험했을 때, 그리고 그것을 이겨냈을 때 어제의 나보다 나아진 나를 체험할 것을 기대하기 때문에 이를 감내하고 도전하는 것입니다. 지난 달의 내가 3대 200을 들 수 있었는데 이번 달에 230을 해냈다면, 그것은 금전으로 환원되지 않는 무엇보다 소중한 경험이기 때문입니다. 이런 자기 갱신의 체험을 경험한 사람들은 과정에 수반되는 괴로움 역시도 즐기게 되고, 이를 통해 자신의 삶을 더욱 풍요롭게 만들어나갑니다. 공부 역시 마찬가지입니다. 지식을 탐구하고 어제의 무지했던 과거의 나로부터 벗어나는 자기 갱신의 과정을 체험하는 것이 공부입니다. 도서관이라는 지식의 헬스장에 들어가 책이라는 지식의 바벨을 꾸준히 들어가며 머리털이 빠져나가는 고통과 괴로움을 견디는 것이 공부입니다. 그렇다고 진짜 머리털이 너무 많이 빠진다면 그건 좀 곤란합니다. 혹시 본인이 그런 상황에 처해계시다면 도서관보다는 병원을 찾아보시는 것이 좋습니다. 지(知)성장을 위한 시작점제가 도서관에서 책을 읽는 것을 헬스장에서 근육을 단련하는 것에 비유하긴 했습니다만, 헬스장에서 운동을 하는 모두가 소위 몸짱이 되는 것은 아닌 것처럼 모든 공부가 지(知)성장을 이끌어 똑똑한 사람이 되도록 만들어주지는 못합니다. 근성장을 위해서는 자신이 단련하려는 하는 근육을 선택하고, 현재 자신이 가진 근력을 측정한 뒤 한계를 뛰어넘기 위해 이에 부딪히는 것이 필요합니다. 공부 역시도 마찬가지입니다. 그렇다면 공부에서 우선 근육에 해당하는 것들에는 무엇이 있을까요? 우선은 특정 개념들을 명료하게 정의하고 사용하는 것부터 시작할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 개념에 대해 정의를 내리는 것은 이해의 첫 걸음이라 할 수 있기 때문입니다. 유명한 김춘수 시인의 꽃이라는 시에서 '내가 그의 이름을 불러주었을 때, 그는 나에게로 와서 꽃이 되었다.'라고 한 것처럼, 우리는 이름을 불러줄 수 있기 전까지는 사물을 다른 것과 구분지어 인식하지 못합니다. 이 때 해당 개념들을 모호하게 정의하지 않도록 노력해야 할 것입니다. 모호한 정의는 이를 무기 삼으려는 권력자라면 이상적일 수도 있습니다. 나에게로 와서 꽃이 된 객체는 어떤 이름을 부여받았을까요? 제 네이밍 센스는 절망적이기 때문에 예를 들어 '유니' 같은 이름을 지었다 할 때 꽃이 와서 항의할 수도 있습니다. '이름을 불러준다고 했지만, 이런 촌스러운 이름일 거라곤 생각하지 못했어!'라고 말이죠. 그러면 저는 이렇게 말할 수도 있습니다. '내가 이름을 불러준다고 했지 그게 멋진 이름일 거라고 한 적은 없는데?' 그러니 꽃은 명확하게 저에게 요구해야합니다, '고등학생 100명에게 물어봤을 때 70명 이상이 세련됐다라고 말하는 이름을 지어줘'와 같이 말이죠. 하지만 공부에서 개념 정의는 권력 다툼이 아니라 사물에 대한 올바른 인식이 목표이기 때문에 이런 다툼이 발생하지 않도록 노력 해야 합니다. 이를 위해 가급적 명료하고 정확하게 정의해서 자신에게 사물을 올바르게 인식할 수 있는 능력이 함양되도록 노력해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 책에서 나온 예시처럼 대머리에 대해 '대머리는 반짝반짝'이라고 말하는 사람이 될 것입니다. 이런 개념들을 세워 지(知)성장이 이루어지고 지식의 척추기립근이 바로 서면서 자기 갱신의 체험을 하게 되면 비로소 눈이 뜨이고 이전보다 좀 더 섬세한 인식을 할 수 있게 될 것입니다. 티모 애호가에서 벗어나 장인이 되려면척추 기립근이 바로 서고 눈이 띄었다면 이제 우리는 비로소 눈을 완전히 뜰 능력을 갖춘 생후 2주차의 아기와 동일한 지점에 도착했다고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 하지만 눈을 떴다고 해서 보이는 것에 대한 인식을 할 수 있느냐하면 그건 또 다른 문제입니다. 아기는 수많은 훈련을 해도 한참동안 아빠를 아빠라 부르지 못하고 엄마라고 부릅니다. 이렇게 아기가 아빠와 엄마를 구분짓기 위해 오랜기간 훈련을 해야하는 것처럼 우리가 올바른 인식을 하기 위해서도 수많은 훈련이 필요합니다. 그러나 단순히 훈련을 오래 한다고 해서 능력이 함양되지는 않습니다. 롤에서 우리는 소위 브실골에 있는 한 캐릭터에 수백 수천 게임을 투자한 사람들을 종종 만날 수 있지만, 그들을 우리가 장인이라고 부르지는 않습니다. 그들은 단순히 그 캐릭터를 좋아하고 많이 한 애호가일 뿐입니다. 그렇다면 노력이 어떻게 하면 애호가가 되는데 머무르지 않고 장인이 되도록 할 수 있을까요? 그러기 위해서는 우리는 올바른 방향성을 갖춘 노력을 해야합니다. 그리고 이런 방향성을 잡아주는 역할을 하는 것이 바로 질문입니다. 저자분의 표현을 빌리자면, '방광에 아무리 액체가 가득해도 갈증 해소에 도움이 되지 않는 것처럼, 자료가 아무리 가득해도 엉뚱한 위치에 놓여 있다면 지적 호기심 해소에 도움이 되지 않습니다.' 따라서 단순히 게임을 많이 해서 경험을 쌓는 것이 아니라, 그 경험이 발전을 위해 올바른 위치에 쌓이도록 노력해야합니다. 그리고 우리는 질문을 하고 이에 대답을 하는 과정을 통해 이를 이룰 수 있습니다. 질문에도 좋은 질문과 좋지 못한 질문이 있습니다. 좋은 질문에는 여러 기준이 있겠지만 가장 먼저 챙길 가치 중 하나는 완성된 문장으로 질문을 표현하는 것입니다. '아, 정글이 탑 좀...'이라고 눈치 보는 것이 아니라 '정글이 탑에서 대포 웨이브를 쌓는걸 보고 윗동선을 밟아서 다이브를 하면 게임을 유리하게 이끌 수 있지 않았을까요?'와 같이 완성된 문장으로 질문을 표현하는 것입니다. 질문을 할 때 무책임하게 대충 단어를 몇 개 던지고 상대가 알아서 이해해주기를 기대해서는 안됩니다. 그 다음으로는 질문을 할 때 자신의 관점에 지나치게 열중한 나머지 상대방과 소통하지 않고 관점을 무시하지 않도록 노력해야 합니다. 아까 3용 싸움에서 우리가 어떻게 하면 한타를 이길 수 있었을 지에 대해 이야기하고 있는데 갑자기, '아 그러게 내가 아까 탑 오라했을때 왔으면 킬먹고 고속도로 냈을텐데'와 같은 태도를 취해서는 안 될 것입니다. 그런 대화를 통해 이야기가 평행선을 달리지 않도록 하려면 상대의 논의 내부로 들어갈 필요가 있습니다. 그러나 저자의 표현을 빌리면 '상대의 논의 내부로 들어가는 것이 바람직하다 해서, 너무 세세한 문제에 집착하라는 말은 아닙니다.' 너무 깊게 들어가서 대부분 관심을 갖지 않을 질문하는 것은 생산적이지 않고 지적질에 불과한 경우가 대부분이기 때문입니다. '아까 용싸움 할 때 왜 감성센도 쓰셨어요?'와 같은 질문을 해서는 안 될 것입니다. 꿀렁이는 근육에서 벗어나, 추락하는 열차를 지탱하려면마침내 지성장을 이루는 데 성공했고, 애호가가 아니라 장인이 되기 위한 방향성을 잡았다면 다음은 이 성장을 다른 사람들과 공유할 필요가 있습니다. 여기서 공유한다는 것은 근육을 꿀렁거리면서 '내 가슴 근육 멋있지?'라며 자랑하는 것을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 그보다는 스파이더맨이 열차가 다리에서 떨어지지 않도록 가슴 근육을 최대한 쥐어짠 것처럼, 자신의 지적인 근육이 감당하기 힘들 정도로 어려운 주제에 대한 견해를 제시하고 다른 사람들과 토론하는 것을 말합니다. 이때 이런 어려운 주제에 해당하는 것이 바로 논쟁의 여지가 있는 주제입니다. 논쟁의 여지가 있는 주제를 다룬다는 것은 어렵습니다. 이는 논쟁의 여지가 없는 쉬운 주제를 다루는 것과 달리 기존과 다른 주장을 제시하고 그것을 넘어서야 하기 때문입니다. 본 저자는 예시로 리어왕에서 사생아 에드먼드가 사생아를 멸시하는 상식을 뒤집어놓는 주장을 제시합니다. 는 농담이고, 제가 좋아하는 만화가 김명호 님은 여러 편의 과학만화를 그리셨습니다만, 정작 학교에 다니실 때에는 과학 시간을 지루하게 여겼고 학교를 졸업한 후에야 과학과 독서의 즐거움에 빠져드셨다고 합니다. 한국에서 공부는 지나치게 위력이 강력한 수단이죠. 뭐든지 취미에서 일이 되면 지겹다고 하듯이, 공부가 그만큼 중요하다 보니 공부를 즐길 이유를 찾지 못 하는 것이 현실인 것 같아요. 공부라는 게 굳이 엄격 근엄 진지하고 학술적인 것일 필요는 없지요. 게임이건 요리건 뭐건 간에 모르는 것을 꾸준한 탐구 끝에 알아가는 경험은 참 귀중한 거라고 생각합니다.
