 예. 죽지도 않고 이 카테고리 단골 햄스터가 다시 돌아왔읍니다. 너무 수다를 많이 떠는 거 같아 망설여지기도 합니다만. 또 어디 이야기할 곳이 없어 따뜻한 홍차넷에 신세를 지게 됩니다. 죄송합니다. 심리학에서는 인지행동치료라는 개념이 있습니다. 구글링해본 결과 "인지행동치료(CBT: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy)는 부적응의 원인이 되는 잘못된 생각을 교정하는 인지치료와 증상을 악화시키는 행동을 교정하는 행동치료를 통합하는 용어입니다." 라고 하네요. 예로 들어 잘못된 생각의 패턴으로 흔히 지적되는 것 중 '극단화' 같은 것이 있습니다. 단순히 과제 하나 안 한 거로 '교수님이 날 싫어할 거야 -> 점수가 나쁠 거야 -> 취업이 안 될 거야 -> 이번 학기는 버렸어'.. 식으로 끊임없이 생각을 과대하게 해 대학을 안 가고, 수업을 전부 빠지다 학사경고를 받는 식으로 행동하는 건데요 이런 잘못된 행동들의 바탕에는 이런 잘못된 신념이 있다 따라서 그걸 찾아내서 고치자! 이런 것이 CBT입니다. 근데 제가 이걸 제대로 배운 건 아닙니다;; 이런 게 그냥 있고, 제가 절 치료하는 데 영감을 받았단 것만 알아두십쇼. 어린 시절 저는 멀쩡했읍니다만 여러 번 수없이 귀찮게 여러분께 말씀드린 대로 저는 복잡한 정신/육체적 학대를 받았기에 저의 신념과 대화는 어느 순간부터 꼬이기 시작했고 바깥 세계와 소통이 안 되는 걸 느끼기 시작했습니다 사람들과 얘기하면 자주 다투었고, 왜 이게 이렇게 되는지 알 수 없었고, 팀플 등의 조별과제에서 페이스 조절이 어려웠고, 친구들과 서운한 일이 생겨도 잘 풀지 못했습니다 웃긴 게 면접이나 (글을 써서 제출하는 종류의) 일 같은 건 괜찮았습니다 즉 지극히 포멀한 일 같은 건.. 그런 상호작용 맥락이 크게 작용하지 않아 괜찮았습니다 근데 소통이 들어가는 순간 일이 꼬였는데, 사실.. 어디서 틀어박혀 일만 하면서 살 수는 없는 게 인간이죠 존경하는 교수님께 사람들과 함께 가는 법을 배워야 한다고 조언받기도 했습니다 그리고 안 좋은 사람을 자주 만나는 등 여러모로 제 안에 세뇌된 신념을 고쳐야 한단 생각이 들기 시작했습니다 (하다못해 법률을 할 때도 '이건 정말 문제지. 이런 사회적 약자를 구제하는 판결은 너무 옳았어. 훌륭한 대법관 분들.' 하고 다들 가르치고 고개를 끄덕이는 판결과 '이런 건 법적 안정성이 우선이지.' '이런 건 청구하는 쪽이 민폐지.' 라고 하는 판결 사이의 그 구별이란 게 참 애매하고 희미하단 생각이 많이 듭니다..;) 그래서 어린 시절부터 틈틈이 좋은 책을 읽고 심리상담, 정신과 치료를 멈춘 적 없이 계속 해왔으나 근본적으로 아비투스란 것 자체의 벽을 느꼈고 ... 제가 그 바깥에서 그 안을 상상하며 공부하는 건 마치, 지금 머릿속으로 외계인 문명을 생각해 거기 에티켓을 배우는 정도의 난도란 걸 깨닫게 됩니다 (...) 나름의 노력으로 수많은 사람들에게 '좋은 사람'이 되려 노력했으나 네.. '좋은 사람'이란 평가를 받는 그정도에 그쳤습니다. 친구들끼리 네 말이 어떻니 행동이 어떻니 고쳐주고 조언해주진 않으니까요..; 그때 마침 혜성처럼 등장한 사람이 있었으니.. 남자친구였습니다 남자친구랑 처음에는 정말 개판으로 싸웠습니다 굳이 구구절절 이야기하진 않겠지만 하여간 서로 살아온 인생이 너무 달랐습니다 남자친구는 외고 출신에, 해외 중 출신에, 나름대로 능력주의와 엘리트주의적 면도 있는 사람이었고 저는 자퇴-검정고시 출신에, 당시에는 제도권의 허점에 대한 반감에 젖어있었습니다 남자친구와 끝없이 싸우던 중 문득 '야, 이걸 그래도 지적이라도 해주는 건 남친뿐이다.' 하고 깨달았습니다. 남친이 어느 정도 표준에 가까울진 모를 일이지만, 그래도 바깥에서 인간관계 맺는 걸 보면 저보다 남친이 더 한층 표준에 가까워보였고 실제로 중산층 엘리트 층 전반에서 남친은 호감을 사는 편입니다. 당시 변호사를 목표로 하고 (지금도) 있던 저로서는 남친을 닮고자 하는 전략을 선택하는 건 나쁘지 않아 보였습니다. 그 결과 마음을 딱 정했습니다. '지금까지의 나는 버린다. 남친을 최대한 따라서 배운다.' 그때부터 유튜브, TV 선택, 만화, 책, 음악 선택 등등 다 남자친구를 참고를 많이 했습니다. 물론 저도 힘들 때는 예전으로 돌아가 '아. 오타쿠 물 볼래~' 하고 힐링하기도 했습니다만. 엄청나게 힘들고 강도 높은 공부를 하고 일과가 끝나고 남자친구는 '토크멘터리 전쟁사'나 '피식대학' 같은 걸 보기도 하고, 서점에서 다양한 경영학 책들을 보기도 하고, 바둑도 두고 여러가지 일과로 힐링을 합니다만 (제 남자친구도 통계적으로 평범한 사람은 아닌 건 알고 있습니다;) 남자친구에게는 그게 힐링이었고 제게는 '2교시 시작'을 알리는 종소리였습니다 같이 유튜브를 보고 남자친구가 웃을 때 같이 웃고, 찡그릴 때 같이 찡그리고, (아예 이해도 안 되고 와닿지도 않는 컨텐츠를 뚫듯이 처음부터 보기 시작해 조금씩 그 라인에 익숙해져가는 기분을 아시나요? 아마 아시는 분이 드물 거 같아요. 그런 노력을 굳이 하지 않으니까요..) 하면서 감정곡선을 일치화시키는 연습을 하는 겁니다. ..물론 인간은 절대로 그런 식으로 자신을 남과 일치시킬 수 없습니다. 제 말은, 따라한단 거죠. 그리고 처음엔 빈민 출신으로서 너무도 무섭게만 느껴졌던 어떤 사람에 대한 무차별적인 스펙 평가, 그를 바탕으로 한 네트워킹 문화 등도 점점 익숙해졌습니다. 오징어게임 대사마냥 돈이 없는 사람과 너무 많은 사람은 둘 다 돈에 얽매이지 않게 되거든요..; 그래서 늘 돈, 돈, 돈 얘기인 많은 평범한 시민들이 첨엔 무서웠습니다. 어떤 계층에게 도덕적으로 느껴지는 일이 어떤 계층에게는 상당히 비도덕적이기도 한 등, 각 계층이 공유하는 일상적 도덕수칙은 정말 다르고, 갈등을 해결하는 방법이나 좋게 보는 인간상, 잘 쓰는 스몰톡, 인사법 등이 다 다르거든요. 이런 걸 하나하나 배워서 머리로 계산해서 익히고 때로는 수첩에 적기도 했습니다. 로스쿨 다니며 적었던 그 용도의 수첩이 있는데, 지금은 버렸네요. 물론 저는 그냥 빈민 출신이 아니라 무지막지한 학대+유기 피해자 출신이라 아예 일상생활의 방법에 대해 배운 바 없던 사람인 점을 참작하셔야 합니다만...; 전 그 과정에서 머리가 빠개지도록 힘들었습니다. 그럼에도 오늘 또 싸웠습니다. 왜 사람을 보고 그 사람의 안 좋은 가능성을 미리 생각하냐고요. 그리고 자기가 아는 사람이, 너한테 설마 나쁘게 굴겠냐 합니다. 제가 살아온 인생 경험상 겉으로는 천하의 좋은 사람처럼 이미지 관리하다가도 약자한테 슬쩍 스트레스 푸는 사람은 매우 많았고, 그 정도가 심한 정도에 이르는 사람도 종종 있었습니다. 그래서 저는 누구를 만나든 약자로 보이지 않기 위해 노력합니다. 그렇게 노력하는 게 불안하다. 오히려 비전략적이다. 남자친구가 설득합니다. 맞는 말입니다. 늘 그렇듯, 사회의 표준에서 보건대 남자친구가 늘 저보다 옳습니다. 저는 알겠다, 노력하겠다고 합니다. 하지만 내가 살아온 경험이 몸과 편도체에 쌓여있는 걸 씻어내는 데 시간을 달라고 합니다. 바꾸기 위해서 요즘 다양한 연습 중입니다. 입꼬리 습관적으로 올리기. 눈앞의 사람을 좋아하는 사람으로 상상하기. 기도하고 가기 등등.. 이 인지행동치료란 게, 경험상 느린 자살과 같습니다. 물론 심리학적으론 훨씬 좋은 의미가 있을 거고 전 모르고 비전문가고 정말 죄송합니다. 이 단어를 사용한 게. 근데 당사자성이란 말도 있듯 제가 야매로 한 치료 경험을 그냥 적겠습니다. 죄송합니다. 내 모든 경험. 그로부터 생긴 내 감각. 내 가치관. 내가 날 보호하기 위해 만든 기제. 그걸 다 '반사회적 요소'를 분리해내고 씻어내고, 어떤 건 더 예쁘게 '친사회적'으로 포장해서 앞뒤를 바꿔 후원과 응원을 받을 수 있을 만한 스토리로 바꿔 냅니다. 연예인, 아이돌 산업을 좋아하게 된 것에 이런 이유도 있었습니다. 아. 나도 뭐 날 꾸며 파는 일을 하는 건 비슷하다..; 아직 오프라인 세계는 천천히 탐험을 시작하고 있습니다만, 오랜 경험상 제가 적어도 경험치를 쌓아온 영역들에선 어떤 연기와 역할을 수행해야 하는지 알고 있습니다. (특히 20대 때 각종 장학금, 교수님 도움을 얻기 위해 다녔던 저의 신비로운 활약에 대해선 지금도 저 스스로 돌이켜보면 놀라울 정도로 잘한 거 같습니다;) 또한 인간의 타인의 기색에 대한 눈치는 정말 귀신 같아서, 사실 누군가를 속이기 위해 가장 좋은 방법은 자기자신을 속이는 것이란 말처럼, 그냥 자기 마음을 바꾸는 게 제일입니다. 심리학을 공부하며 결국 어느 순간 느낀 거지만, 결국 사회 표준에 맞지 않는 자기 경험은 잊거나 덮거나 삭제하거나 재해석하거나 적당히 어떻게든 지우고 넘어가는 법을 배워야 한다는 게 실용적 가르침에 가까운 거 같습니다. 때때로 '평범하게 산 사람의 인생의 일대기'는 무슨 사우론의 탑마냥 저를 압박하는 거로 느껴집니다. 아-- 또 어떻게 지어내야 하나. 그러다 가끔, 남들의 '평범한 이야기'가 마치 내가 겪은 것처럼 (???) 학습되어 착! 반응이 0.0001초만에 나오고 딱 같이 웃거나 하면서 공감대가 형성되고 있을 때는 '와! 내가 해냈다! 뿌뿌뿌뿌!' 하고 쾌감도 듭니다. -주로 부모님, 가족에 대한 정서적 공감대에 제가 맞춰줄 때 저 스스로도 신기합니다. 이야.. 이걸 내가 남들을 공감해주네. 그냥 머리로 공부해서 어떻게든 가슴으로 익혔네.- 누군가는 뭐 이럴지도 모릅니다. 당신은 잘못하고 있어. 너는 네 인생을 긍정하지 않아... 근데 실제로 이런 인지행동치료를 거치며 제 관계가 개선되었을뿐더러 정신건강과 육체건강 모두 좋아졌습니다. 정말 많이 좋아졌습니다. 즉 저의 '느린 자살'은 효과가 있는 셈입니다. 사회 입장에서 봐도 네가 범죄 피해를 당했건 뭘 당했건간에 그건 네 일인데 자꾸 그걸 사회에 투영하거나 갖고 오지 마라 라는 거니 뭐 그 사람들이 틀린 말하는 것도 아니고 하고 싶은 말 하는 거죠..; 알아서 네 경험은 지우고 와. -사실 모두가 하고 싶은 속마음의 말이죠. 누구나... 네 인생에는 관심 없고. 네 인생은.. 우리 사회의 의제(agenda)가 아니야. 그런데 매일 짬짬이, 오늘도 또, 나와 달라지기 위해 내가 원래라면 눌러서 봤을 글과 영상이 아닌 다른 글과 영상을 보며 뇌에 힘을 쓰고, 가끔 힘이 들어 탈진하고, 수십 가지 선택지를 두고 고민하며 (결국 '다 해본다'를 고르던 게 20대의 저였습니다) 안 만나던 사람을 만나보려 하고, 새 교회를 가고, 내가 근데 지금 또 인지적으로 갇혀있어 떠올리지 못할 선택지에야말로 진정한 치료의 길이 있다 생각하여 미친듯이 주위 사람에게 조언을 구하고 다니고, 이 모든 게 그냥 가끔 너무 지칩니다 아니 사실 자주... 익명의 이메일 주소를 만들고, 혹시 나랑 비슷한 경험을 한 사람이 있으면 연락을 달라고 홍보해보았습니다. 아무도 연락을 주지 않는데도, 늘 그 메일을 들어갈 때는 심장이 덜컹거리고 설렘에 두근거립니다. 누군가, 혹시, 나와 비슷하게 살아서 비슷한 반응을 보여서, 매 동작과 매 행동에 계산을 하지 않아도 되는 사람이 있다면. 그래서 그냥 같이 밥을 먹고 카페를 가고 길을 걷는 게 '자동적으로' 되는 사람이 있다면 ... 초등학교 때 추억 이야기를 할 때 진땀을 빼며 어떤 에피소드를 지어낼까 걱정하지 않고, '야. 집에 119 몇 번 와봤냐?' '난 몇 번.' 하면서 깔깔 서로 웃을 친구가 있으면.. 참 '반사회적'이지만 즐거울 텐데요... -그렇게 대화하는 거 자체가 사람들 눈에 좋아보이진 않겠지만...;;- 매일 이런 외로움을 느끼지만, '너네처럼 평범하고 정상적인 정신건강을 갖추기 위해 과거의 불건강한 나의 패턴을 없애느라 외로워' 라고 해봤자 누가 공감해주겠습니까. '어.. 그래; 수고하고.' 이게 답이겠죠. 게다가 아직 전 오프라인 소통 방식은 끔찍하게 서툴러서 미친듯이 하나하나 연습해야 하고 이제야 대한민국 국민이 되는 기분이라 대한민국 역사도 읽어봅니다. 공부할 게 산더미입니다. 경제 정치 법 금융 과학 기술 ... 그래서인지 요즘 또 두통을 달고 삽니다. 그럼에도 확실해진 건 저는 나날이 건강해지고 있습니다. 여러분 덕입니다. 감사합니다. 그리고 또, 절 스쳐지나갔던 많은 상담 선생님들이 제게 말한 말들만 해도.. '햄스 씨만큼 심리적으로 건강한 사람 없다 햄스님이 제 상사며면 좋겠다(??)', '이렇게 살아남은 것만 봐도 지혜롭다', '기적적으로 나아졌다', '매우 강하다'..... 예 사실 누가 이걸 한다고 해서 스스로 치료가 되는 사람이 또 얼마나 되겠습니까 전 솔직히 재능충인 겁니다.. (너무 하찮아 보여서 남들 눈에 에? 싶겠지만 이정도 심리적 외상에서 이정도로 극복해내는 사람은 드뭅니다.) 이렇게 저는 살아남아가고 있지만, 솔직히 말해, 왠지 모를 죄책감으로, 그리고 이 과정이 얼마나 험난한지 아는 탓에, 그리고 위에 썼듯 제가 재능의 축복을 받은 걸 알기 때문에, 다른 사람들에게 '너도 나처럼 살아봐' 라고는 입이 찢어져도 못 말할 것 같습니다. 하지만 현실적인 답은 이거긴 합니다. '네 마음을 죽이고, 다른 사람을 따라하면서, 천천히 뇌의 회로를 새로 만들고 개발시켜. 과거는 잊어. 다양성이나 정체성 정치 같은 건, 우리 생전에 될지 모르겠고 일단 우리 밥 먹고 살아야 하잖아. 일단 어느 시대건 표준 이데올로기는 있고 거기 맞추는 게 답인데 이상하게 그걸 말하는 게 잔인하게 들려서 다들 좀 피할 뿐이지 속 생각은 비슷해. 여기서 벗어날수록 사람들이 모멸감 주는 것뿐 아니라 정신도 몸도 아파온다. 우리가 개미 같은 군체 생물이란 걸 받아들이고 사회구조를 받아들여. 사회가 아직 의제로 삼지 않은 건, 사회에서 존재하지 않아야 해. 화제에 오르지 않아야 하고, 네가 그것에 독자적인 중요성을 부여한단 것만으로 넌 비사회적인 사람이 되고 주위에 피곤한 사람이 돼. 이게 현실이야.' '그러다 사회가 바뀌면?' '그때는 다들 언제 그랬냐는 듯 갑자기 말이 바뀌겠지. 그럼 그땐 그거에 동참하면 돼. 아무튼. 지금은 살아남자.' 미안해. 하지만 그게 내가 찾은 답이야. 하지만 그런 말은 통 할 수 없으니.. 이젠 무슨 글을 쓰기도 조심스러워집니다. 이런 식으로 잔인한 진실들은 감춰지나 봅니다. 이제 슬슬 공부도 궤도에 올라가고 가끔 오프라인 활동 하는 것도 늘어나고 있습니다. 앞으로 얼마나 더 저를 깎아야 할지, 그 과정에서 얼마나 외로움이 솟아 올라올지 모르겠지만, 어떤 지인이 저한테 말해준 것처럼 ad astra per aspera! 아이고. 오늘 싱크로율 높네요 ㅎㅎ 저도 뭔가에 자극을 받아서 편도체가 광광 울었던 날이었어요. 하지만 친구와 농담도 하고, 가족과 좋은 시간 보내고, 일은 평소보다 더 잘했지요. 마음과는 별개로 실제 생활은 평범하게 꾸려갈 수 있다는 것에 감사하기도 하고, 이 괴리 때문에 더 고립된 느낌이 들기도 합니다. 저는 ‘우울한 현대인에게 주는 번즈 박사의 충고’라는 책으로 인지치료를 처음 접했어요. 우선 책 전반의 내용이 20대 초반까지의 어린 시절 사고방식과 너무 똑같아서 그 익숙함에 놀랐어요. 그리고 저의 괴로움이 합리적 사고를 못해... 더 보기
아이고. 오늘 싱크로율 높네요 ㅎㅎ 저도 뭔가에 자극을 받아서 편도체가 광광 울었던 날이었어요. 하지만 친구와 농담도 하고, 가족과 좋은 시간 보내고, 일은 평소보다 더 잘했지요. 마음과는 별개로 실제 생활은 평범하게 꾸려갈 수 있다는 것에 감사하기도 하고, 이 괴리 때문에 더 고립된 느낌이 들기도 합니다. 저는 ‘우울한 현대인에게 주는 번즈 박사의 충고’라는 책으로 인지치료를 처음 접했어요. 우선 책 전반의 내용이 20대 초반까지의 어린 시절 사고방식과 너무 똑같아서 그 익숙함에 놀랐어요. 그리고 저의 괴로움이 합리적 사고를 못해서 온 게 아니라, 합리성으로 틀어막고 있던 것이 봇물 터지듯 터지면서 왔다는 것을 깨닫게 되었어요. 번즈 박사에 대해서는 치약 광고에 나오는 건치 연예인 같다면서 비꼬았지요. 아마 이런 부분은 햄스님의 감각과는 다른 것 같아요. 이 밖에도 많은 경험이 다르겠죠. 하지만 정상성을 가지고 싶다, 나를 죽여서라도 정상성을 가지고 싶다는 열망을 저도 어느 정도 가지고 있습니다. 제 경우는 소위 말하는 ‘재능’이 내가 버리고 싶은 비정상성의 일부였기 때문에 그걸 죽이는 게 일생의 과제였죠. 그리고는 뭐, 자기 자신이 되고 싶다는 소망과 결코 자기 자신이 되어서는 안 되는 명령 사이에서의 길고 지리한 투쟁입니다. 아직까지도 말이에요. 저 자신도 해결하지 못한 문제니까 당연히 해결의 길을 제시해줄 수는 없고, 다만 남들이 아무리 자기 자신이 되어라, 자신을 사랑하라고 말해도 자신을 죽여서라도 남이 되고 싶은 그 마음이 뭔지 압니다. 그런 노력도 아마 필요하기도 할 거고, 유익하기도 할 거예요, 어느 정도는. 그래도 끝내는 자기 자신이 되기를 바랍니다- 라고 축원할 필요도 없는 게 햄스님은 괴로워하는 순간 순간도 넘나 빼박 햄스님 자신인 것 같아서요. 그냥 남이 되고 싶어하는 햄스님이지 결코 햄스님이 아닌 그 무엇인 것 같지 않아서요. 여튼 편도체가 나대는 건 힘든 일이니 오늘은 이만 편도체 기절시키고 편히 잠들기를 바랍니다. 저도 그러려고요.
