지난번에 과학과 유사과학이라는 글을 쓰다가 지치는 바람에 대충 마무리졌다가 엄청 까이고 그만 두려다가 후속으로 포퍼를 썼는데 팟져님의 멋진 해석으로 빛을 봤습니다. 원래는 다음 주제로 쿤에 대해 써보려고 했습니다. 팟져님과 eLeejah님, 또다른 분들이 지적해주신 문제들이 쿤과 라카토슈, 이후 파생되는 과학사와 과학사회학의 논의에 포함되기 때문에 자연스럽게 이어질 것 같았거든요. 사실 조금 쓰다가 말았는데 댓글로 민주당 욕하다가 보니(?) 시간이 너무 지난데다가 제가 흥미가 떨어져 버렸습니다. 쿤에 대한 평가와 비판, 그리고 이를 계승하는 관점에서 과학사회학에 대해서는 이미 잘 정리되어 있는데 굳이 또 정리할 의욕이 안 나더군요. 그러다가 개미먹이님과 논쟁에서 화두에 올랐던 콰인이 생각나서 열대야 동안에 몇 줄 읽었습니다. 이건 쓸 의욕이 나는데 왜냐하면 제가 이해가 안돼서(…) 쓰면서 정리를 좀 하려고요. 이 글은 콰인에 대한 (제가 거기까지 밖에 못 읽어서) 매우 간략한 서론 정도가 될 것입니다. 교과서로 널리 쓰이는 M.K. 뮤니츠의 <현대 분석 철학>을 보고 썼고, 다른 책에서 본 것도 좀 섞어 넣었습니다. 분석철학 = 러셀의 철학 본격적으로 콰인에 대해서 논하기 전에 분석철학에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다. 교과서에서는 프레게, 러셀, 전기 비트겐슈타인, 논리 실증주의, 후기 비트겐슈타인, 콰인의 순서대로 나오는데 철학사적인 입장에서나 실제 다루는 내용이나 방법론에서나 분석철학을 위와 같은 범위로 정하는 데는 이견이 없습니다. 사상의 흐름을 이해하는 측면에서 수월하고 실제로 시간적 순서도 일치하기 때문에 분석철학의 흐름을 저렇게 파악하지만, 아주 단순하게 보면 분석철학은 “러셀의 철학”입니다. 프레게가 주목 받은 것은 <수학의 원리>를 다 써놓은 러셀이 자신과 비슷한 생각을 가졌다는 사실을 발견하고 프레게의 오류를 지적하면서 <수학의 원리>를 보강했기 때문이고, 러셀의 입장에서 비트겐슈타인은 러셀이 남겨 놓은 문제를 해결하려는 시도를 했습니다. 논리 실증주의는 그러한 시도의 1차적 해답이었던 <논리-철학 논고>의 파생물이었고, 콰인은 <수학의 원리>의 공저자인 화이트헤드의 제자였으며 프레게와 러셀의 전통적 방법론을 기본으로 하고 있죠. 즉, 분석철학의 흐름 중간에 러셀이 있는 것이 아니라 (후기 비트겐슈타인을 제외한) 각각의 모든 사상에 러셀이 직접적으로 영향을 주고 있다고 볼 수 있습니다. 그렇다면 “러셀의 철학”은 과연 무엇일까요? 20세기 철학자라면 으레 그렇듯이, 러셀의 작업도 칸트에 대한 비판으로 출발합니다. 칸트하면 떠오르는 “분석 명제”와 “종합 명제”가 있죠. 분석 명제는 주어가 지칭하는 개념을 파악하여 술어와의 관계를 파악해야 하는 명제고, 종합 명제는 주어가 술어에 포함되어 있지 않아 경험을 통해 이해해야 하며 실제로 지식을 넓히는 명제입니다. 간단히 말해서, 분석 명제는 논리학이고 종합 명제는 과학인 것이죠. 칸트는 여기서 그치지 않고 수학의 위상을 정의하는데요, 수학을 선험적 종합 명제라고 말합니다. 7 더하기 5는 12라는 명제가 있을 때, 7 더하기 5라는 주어는 술어인 12다라는 사실을 개념적으로 포함하지 않기 때문에 종합 명제고, 7 더하기 5가 12라는 명제의 참 거짓은 경험에 의해 판단하지 않기 때문에 선험적이라는 것이죠. 즉, 칸트는 수학을 직관에 의존하면서도 실제 세계의 시공간을 표현하고 이에 대한 이해를 확장한다고 생각했습니다. 이는 칸트가 뉴턴 물리학에 직접적이고도 깊은 영향을 받았음을 보여주는 점이었고 이러한 생각은 칸트 이후 정설처럼 철학의 입장으로 받아들여집니다. 무슨 얘기인지 모르시겠다고요? 저도 모르겠습니다(…) 그렇지만 칸트를 이 이상으로 설명할 능력이 없기 때문에 여기서 중단할 수 밖에 없네요. 지금 맥락에서 가장 중요한 건 칸트에 의하면, 논리학과 수학은 완전 다르고, 수학과 과학은 조금 비슷한 것 같기도 하다는 정도겠습니다. 러셀은 이러한 생각을 정면으로 부정했습니다. 수학의 근간은 논리학이며 논리학이 기본으로 삼고 있는 몇 가지 기본적 공리들로부터 수학의 모든 것을 귀납할 수 있다고 생각했죠. 그러한 작업이 바로 <수학의 원리>입니다. 그리고 논리학을 우리의 일상적인 언어에 적용하여 “명료한” 언어로 대체하면 철학의 모든 문제들이 해결된다고 믿었습니다. 러셀보다 몇 년 앞서서 프레게가 이 작업을 단독적으로 했는데 러셀이 이를 재발견해 널리 알리고 동시에 프레게가 사용한 몇 가지 공리에서 오류를 발견했습니다. 이 오류를 해결한 방법들이 유명한 “유형론”과 “한정 기술구”이고, 러셀의 이러한 전반적인 철학을 “논리 원자론”이라고 합니다. 러셀은 <수학의 원리>를 다 쓰고 왠지 찝찝함이 몇 개 남았지만 너무 힘들어서 쉬운 책이나 써야겠다고 마음을 먹습니다. 그러던 찰나에 러셀의 연구실에 독일어 쓰는 ADHD가 의심되는 청년이 노크를 하는데, 그가 바로 천재 중의 천재 비트겐슈타인입니다. 콰인 한편, 러셀과 <수학의 원리>를 같이 쓴 화이트헤드는 하버드로 떠납니다. 콰인은 화이트헤드의 지도를 받아 철학 교수가 되고 한평생을 하버드에서 지냅니다. 네이버캐스트에서는 콰인을 “논리 실증주의의 적자”라고 표현하면서 등에 칼을 꽂았다는 식으로 써놨던데 과도한 묘사인 것 같습니다. 다른 분석철학자들과 다르게 콰인은 비트겐슈타인의 영향에 직접적으로 놓여 있지도 않았고 카르납과 교류한 것은 몇 년에 불과합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 콰인은 프레게와 러셀의 수리철학을 자신의 가장 기본적인 바탕으로 깔아놓고 언어 철학과 의미론, 나아가 존재론에 확장시켰다는 점에서 “분석철학의 적자”임은 확실합니다. 콰인의 작업은 논리 실증주의가 과도하게 나간 지점을 원래대로 복귀시키고 분석철학을 철학의 영역에 돌려 놓았다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것입니다. 콰인의 작업은 크게 언어철학과 의미론의 영역, 존재론의 영역 두 가지로 나눌 수 있고 이를 각기 대표하는 두 가지 논문인 “경험주의의 두 가지 독단(Two Dogmas of Empiricism)”과 “존재하는 것에 관하여(On What There Is)”가 있습니다. 특히, 언어철학과 의미론의 영역에서 쓴 “경험주의의 두 가지 독단”은 과학철학에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지합니다. 프랑스의 과학철학자이자 과학사학자였던 피에르 뒤앙의 논지를 인용해 논리를 전개했기 때문에 “뒤앙-콰인 논제(Duhem-Quine Thesis)”라고 하는데, 아주 간단하게 말해서 포퍼 빼고 모든 과학철학자와 과학사학자들이 다 갖다가 씁니다. 물론 분석철학 자체에서도 상당한 영향을 주었습니다. 다만, 두 종류의 작업은 매우 서로 깊은 연관을 가지고 있기 때문에 따로 분리하는 것은 편의를 위함이라고 봐도 될 것 같습니다. 일단 먼저, 콰인의 존재론에 대해서 설명하려고 합니다. 결론부터 말하자면, 콰인은 매우 충실하게 프레게와 러셀의 수리철학의 전통을 따르면서도 흥미롭게도 형이상학의 지위를 회복시킵니다. 프레게와 러셀의 방법을 통해, 존재론이 수리철학과 모순되지 않고 그 안에 어울릴 수 있다는 것을 보여줍니다. 이는 논리 실증주의가 모든 형이상학을 부정하는 극단적인 주장에 대항하는 것이면서도 분석철학을 다시 철학의 범주에 포함시켜 놓은 작업이죠. (논리 실증주의가 파시즘적으로 묘사되는 것은 그 이론들의 정교함과 세련됨에 비하면 좀 억울할 수는 있겠지만, 어쨌든 대충 결론이 그러니까!) 그렇다고 해서 콰인이 논리 실증주의를 정면으로 부정한 것은 아니었습니다. 논리 실증주의가 지적하는 궤변론적이고 무의미한 형이상학은 혐오해야 마땅하지만 그렇다고 해서 모든 형이상학을 부정하는 것은 과도한 행태라는 생각이었죠. 그러나 언제나 그렇듯이 이런 양비론 느낌 나는 학설은 양쪽에서 까이기 마련입니다. 콰인의 이론은 매우 격렬한 반발에 부딪히지만, 이미 콰인의 논문들은 고전의 반열에 올랐고 그가 분석철학의 전통에 있다는 사실은 변함이 없습니다. 그 일례로, 콰인 역시 분석철학 전통을 잘 따라서 성질이 매우 더럽고 기고 아니고가 확실했던 것 같습니다. 해체주의로 유명한 자크 데리다가 케임브리지 대학에서 명예 박사 학위를 받게 되자 저런 사이비철학에다 궤변이나 일삼는 사람에게 학위를 주어서는 안 된다고 탄원서를 냈다는 일화가 있더라고요. 존재론적 개입(Ontological commitment) “존재하는 것에 관하여”에서 콰인은 기존의 존재론에 대한 본인의 불만을 표시합니다. 존재하지 않는 것들의 존재(being)를 인정해야 한다는 입장, 현실적 실재들과 가능적 실재들을 구분하고 가능적 실재들에 대해서 특수한 위치를 부여하는 입장, 개별자와 보편자를 구분하여 보편자의 객관성과 영원성을 강조하는 전통적인 철학자들의 입장을 나열하고 그들이 가지는 문제를 지적합니다. 이와 동시에 이러한 존재론들의 확정함(평가함과는 다른데 이 차이를 인식하는 것이 콰인을 이해하는데 중요합니다)에 있어서 명료한 기준을 세웁니다. 이 때 수리철학을 사용하죠. 페가수스와 빨갛다의 예를 통해 기존의 존재론에 대한 콰인의 비판을 설명하면 완성도 높은 글이 되겠지만, 힘들어서 생략하려고 합니다. 요약하자면, 1) 가능적 실재들을 다른 가능적 실재들로부터 구별 짓는 명확한 기준이 없다. 즉, 정체성이 없으면 실재도 없다(No entity without identity). 2) 명명하는 것이 존재해야 한다는 오류는 이미 러셀의 한정 기술구 이론에서 폭로되었다. 또한, 술어로 대체될 수 없는 개념(명사)는 임의적으로 설정한 술어의 파생어로서 간주할 수 있기 때문에 역시 한정 기술구 이론으로 설명된다. 3) 추상 명사는 그것이 기술하는 개별적 대상에 대한 참 거짓을 가릴 수 있는 술어적 표현으로 대체될 수 있기 때문에 존재를 지칭할 필요가 없다. 즉, 용법에서의 유의미성이 실재에 대한 이름으로서의 기여를 반드시 의미하지 않는다. 4) ‘의미’라는 특수한 매개적 실체를 요구하지 않아도 유의미한 것과 무의미한 것을 구별하는데 아무런 문제가 없다. 아마, 페가수스와 빨갛다가 어떤 식으로 적용되었는지 대충 짐작하셨으리라고 봅니다. (는 죄송합니다.) 진짜 핵심은 지금부터인데 (무슨 서론이 이렇게 길죠?) 각각의 철학이 보여주는 “존재론적 개입”을 논리학을 통해 명확히 하는 것이 콰인의 핵심적인 작업이었습니다. 이런 작업을 통해 분명하게 드러난 지점에서, 각각의 존재론에 대한 찬반을 밝히는데 이 때는 논리학이 관여하지 않습니다. 어떤 존재론을 채택하느냐, 즉, 어떤 철학을 채택하느냐는 “관용과 실험적인 정신”이라고 말합니다. 일종의 실용주의적 입장이라고 볼 수 있겠죠. 콰인은 누누히 말했듯이 프레게와 러셀의 전통 위에 서 있습니다. 따라서 일상 언어가 가지고 있는 부적절성과 혼란을 제거하고자 논리학을 적극 도입하는데 찬성하며 이를 철학의 기본적 작업으로 전제하고 있습니다. 즉, 논리학을 통해 언명을 적절하게 재서술하는데, 양화(quantization)를 통해 변항을 속박해야 합니다. 갑자기 외계어가 튀어나오는데 프레게에 대한 기초적 설명을 간략하게 동반하겠습니다. 아리스토텔레스의 유명한 삼단논법이 있죠. 1) 모든 사람은 죽는다. 2) 소크라테스는 사람이다. 3) 따라서 소크라테스는 죽는다. 그런데 이 삼단논법에서 사람은 주어로도 쓰였다가 술어로도 쓰입니다. 프레게의 논리학은 이러한 오류를 바로 잡습니다. 1) 모든 x에 대하여, x가 사람이면 x는 죽는다. 2) 소크라테스는 사람이다. 3) 따라서 소크라테스는 죽는다. 이를 조금 간단하게 써보자면 이렇습니다. 1) (∀x) F(x)⇒G(x) 2) F(a): true 3) ∴ F(a)⇒G(a): true 이렇게 논리학의 도움을 빌려서, 불분명한 술어의 위치를 명확하게 만들고, ‘모든(∀)’이나 ‘어떠한(∃)’ 같은 보편 양화사를 쓰고, 변항들을 ‘속박’하면서 언어를 명료하게 하는 것이죠. 이러한 작업을 통해 어떤 철학에서 사용하는 우리는 1차 양화 명제, 즉, 모든 x는 어떠하다 혹은 어떠한 x는 어떠하다라는 문장을 얻을 수 있습니다. 그리고 이 속박되어 있는 x는 개별적 대상들을 지칭하게 되는데 이 개별적 대상들이 포함되는 값의 정의역을 설정하는 작업에서 각각 철학이 사용하는 존재론의 차이가 드러나게 됩니다. “어떠한 개는 하얗다”라는 명제를 생각해봅시다. 우리는 이 명제에서 개성(doghood)이나 하양성(whiteness)를 상정할 필요는 없습니다. 다만, 이 명제의 변항에 들어가야 하는 하얀 개들이 존재한다고 말할 뿐입니다. 즉, 명제에 존재론적 개입이 들어가는 것이죠. 좀 더 구체적인 예로 “어떤 종이 상호교배되었다”라는 명제를 보면, 생물학적 종이라는 다소 추상적인 개념을 인정하고 있습니다. 이 명제의 변항에는 종이 들어가는 것이고 이러한 종의 개념이 한정 기술구를 통해서 재서술되기 전까지는 종의 존재를 인정, 다른 말로 존재론적 개입이 들어간 셈이 되는 것이죠. “즉, 하나의 이론은 그 이론에 대한 긍정이 참으로 되기 위하여 그 이론의 속박 변항이 지시해야만 하는 그러한 실재들과 그러한 실재들에 대해서만 존재론적으로 개입한다”는 이야기입니다. 콰인의 이러한 논리학은, 존재론마다 차이점을 보여주지만 어떤 것이 존재하고 어떤 것이 존재하지 않는지는 판단할 수 없습니다. 콰인은 자신의 논리학을 존재론의 본질적 내용 사이의 차이점을 속박된 변항의 정의역을 설정하는 작업이라고 말하면서, “의미론적 상승(semantic ascent)”라고 불렀습니다. 존재하는 것을 받아들이는 것은 정의역을 받아들이는 것이며, 그 정의역의 설정에 대해서는 가능성, 단순성, 환원성을 비롯한 여러 형이상학적 토론이 동반되겠죠. 이 모든 논의는 콰인의 강렬한 문장, “존재하는 것은 변항의 값이다(To be is to be the value of a variable)”로 요약할 수 있겠습니다. 자, 이제 경험론에 대한 비판으로 과학철학에 큰 화두를 던졌던 뒤앙-콰인 논제에 대해서 알아보면 너무 힘드니까 여기서 끝냅니다. 뒤앙-콰인 논제에 대해서 알아볼 일이 있을지는 미지수(…)입니다. 속박된 변항이죠.
