안녕하세요. 홍차넷 가끔 들어오는, 출판사 다니는 사람입니다. ^^; 이번에 저희 출판사에서 《서른의 불만 마흔의 불안》이라는 책이 나왔는데, 뭔가 이야기하기 좋은 주제들이어서, 홍차넷에서 나누고 싶어 운영진님께 연락드렸어요. 책의 몇 꼭지를 연재하듯 올리고, 댓글 달아주신 분들 중 추첨을 통해 책을 선물로 드리고 싶다고요! (게재 후에 어찌될진 모르겠지만...) 홍차넷에서 이야기해보았음 하는 주제들 선별해서, 5회 정도 올리려고 하는데 꼭 책을 사시라는 건 아니고요 ^^; 그냥 여기서만이라도 읽어보시고 경험이나 생각들 나눠보면 어떨까합니다. 각 회차별로 댓글 달아주신 분 중 1분 선정하여, 다음 회차 글 올릴 때 말씀드릴게요. 따로 쪽지도 드리고요. 그럼, 다정한 마음으로 읽어봐주시길 바라며 글을 올려봅니다. (글은 본문에서 짧게 편집한 버전입니다!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ <야망의 눈동자> 내 이름 ‘조소현’은 평범하지만 한 글자씩 뜯어보면 웃긴 구석이 있다. 중간 글자의 한자가 ‘작을 소(小)’이기 때문이다. 부모님은 말씀하셨다. “네가 남자 사주를 타고나서…… 좀 눌러줄 필요가 있었어. 네 오빠랑 사주와 성격이 반대였으면 좋았을 텐데.” 오빠는 목소리가 작았고 나는 목소리가 컸다. 오빠는 공부에 욕심이 없었고 나는 오빠보단 많았다. 오빠는 되고 싶은 게 없었고 나는 돈 많은 사장님도 되고 싶고, 말 잘하는 변호사도 되고 싶었으며, 사회 정의를 구현하는 기자도 되고 싶었다. 사주가 ‘눌린’ 탓인지 내 머릿속에서 ‘성공’ 같은 단어는 작아졌고, ‘작을 소 효과’로 키도 딱히 자라지 않았다. 우리 사회는 잘난 여자를 싫어한다. 뛰어난 여자도 싫어한다. 거대한 포부가 있거나 야심만만해 성공할 가능성이 있는 여자도 싫어한다. 이들은 드세고 공격적이고 위협적인 존재가 된다. 한 친구는 회사에서 일을 가리지 않고 주도적으로 해낼 때마다 “임원이라도 되시게요?”, “너무 독하다”, “욕심이 많네” 같은 소리를 듣는다. 물론 남자 동기가 똑같이 했을 때 “능력 있네”라고 칭찬받는 걸 목격한 적이 있다. 같은 회사의 유일한 여성 임원은 직원들 사이에서 ‘성공을 위해 물불 안 가리는 못돼먹고 표독스러운 냉혈한’으로 포지셔닝되어 있다고 했다. 수두룩한 남성 임원은 그냥 ‘임원’이거나 ‘타고난 리더’다. 여성은 ‘최연소 이사’, ‘연봉 2억 원’ 등 실제 커리어상의 사실을 숨기거나 주저하지 않고 그대로 말해도 미움을 산다. 여자의 야망은 선을 넘은 과욕이고 남자의 야망은 멋진 것이다. 덕분에 여자는 자기 가치를 모르고 남자는 자기 분수를 모른다. 소설가 제시카 놀은 <뉴욕 타임스>에 게재한 칼럼에서 밀레니얼 세대는 동시에 추구하기 힘든 가치를 강요받는다고 적은 바 있다. “나는 늘 여성으로서 내게 기대되는 것과 나 자신이 스스로에게 기대하는 것 사이에서 씨름해왔다. 밀레니얼 세대의 여성성에는 상충하는 메시지가 있다. 야망을 갖되 보스처럼 굴어서는 안 되고, 강하되 날씬해야 하고, 솔직하게 공손해야 하고, 여자의 적은 여자라는 문화적 편견 하에서 여성 동료의 성공에 일조해야 한다. 남자가 돈과 권력을 추구하는 방식대로 공격적으로 돈과 권력을 추구하는 여성을 나는 소설에서만 그릴 수 있었다. ‘너무 잘난 여성은 부담스럽다’며 자신을 낮출 것을 강요하던 사회는 이제 세상이 변하지 않았느냐며 “왜 남자처럼 야망을 갖지 않고 현실에 안주하려고 하느냐”고 탓까지 하기 시작했다. 사회나 가정에 경제적으로 일조하되 도드라지게 잘나서는 곤란하다. 나름대로 희망찬 소녀였던 나는 사회에 나와 완벽한 ‘쭈구리’가 됐다. 처음 정규직 제안을 받았을 때 “저 같은 애도 괜찮으시겠어요?”라고 되물었고, 경력이 쌓여 승진할 시점이 왔을 때 “제가 무슨 차장이에요. 지금도 괜찮아요”라고 말했고, 팀장 자리를 권유받았을 때 “글쎄요, 그냥 서포트하는 역할이 저에게 잘 맞아요”라고 대답했다. 칭찬이라도 받으면 “어우, 남들도 다 하는 건데요, 뭐”라며 손사래를 쳤다. 끊임없이 내가 가진 능력을 의심하고 지레 나 자신을 끌어내렸다. 승진하려고 애쓰는 여자 선배를 볼 때면 동기들끼리 “난 저렇게 나이 들지 않을 거야. 추하게 뭘 저렇게 자리에 집착하냐. 때 되면 내려놔야지” 하고 수군거렸다. 사실 나는 사회생활을 하며 내 성격이 소심해졌다고 생각했지, 외부로부터 자신을 낮추라는 메시지를 은연중에 주입받았다는 생각조차 하지 못했다. 한편 어느 선배는 여성으로서 정체성을 부정하는 길을 택했다. 어릴 때부터 ‘남자는 더 좋은 것’이라는 막연한 생각에 사로잡혀 남자 마인드로 살았다. ‘여성적인 것’을 모두 거부했는데 가령 치마를 입으라고 하면 기함했고 사내아이 같은 말투를 썼다. 이로써 그 선배는 “쟤는 여자가 아니야. 완전 남자야” 같은 평판을 이끌어냈고 ‘예외’ 취급을 받으며 오히려 자유롭게 살았다. 극단적 사건이지만 얼마 전에는 자신보다 능력 있는 아내를 견디지 못한 남자가 아내를 죽이고 자살하는 일이 있었다. 여전히 나는 ‘야망’보단 ‘목표’란 표현이 편안하고 높은 자리를 탐내서는 안 될 것만 같다. 하지만 이제 적어도 자기 비하는 그만두려고 한다. 어떤 자리에 올랐다면, 고개를 쳐들진 않더라도 내려다보진 않으려고 한다. 아티스트 제니 홀저는 “여자가 일에 빠져들거나 그런 삶을 갖는 건 남자들의 세상을 쉽지 않게 만들거나 가능하지 않게 합니다. 개인적 문제를 넘어 국경을 초월한 사회적 문제이기에 지금 당장 해결이 필요해요”라고 말했다. 그녀의 작품 <소년과 소녀를 같은 방식으로 키워라(Raise boys and girls the same way)>, <이기심이 가장 기본적인 동기다(Selfishness is the most basic motivation)>가 머릿속을 스친다. 일단 이름의 ‘작을 소’부터 어떻게 해봐야겠다. ‘웃을 소(笑)’도 좋겠다. _《서른의 불만 마흔의 불안》 26p Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 0 이 게시판에 등록된 초공님의 최근 게시물
