미드나잇선즈라는 게임이 있습니다. 파이락시스에서 마블코믹스 엑스컴 같은 느낌으로 만든 게임이라고 알고 있었죠. 평이 괜찮은데 흥행을 완전히 박아버렸고, 스팀에서 정말 심심하면 한번씩 세일을 하더라구요. 대체 무슨 게임인가 하고 궁금해하는 동시에 얼마나 더 세일을 때릴지 기대하고 있었죠. 그러던 중에 사이버펑크2077 엔딩을 한번 보고는, 다른 엔딩을 또 달릴 기력이 빠져 버렸습니다. 마침 미드나잇선즈를 '또' 세일하길래 사서 좀 해봤습니다. 이 글은 그 감상이자, 미드나잇선즈가 왜 흥행하지 못했는지에 대한 고민입니다. 1. 장점 -. 이 게임은 정말 대사량에 목숨을 걸었다는 인상을 줍니다. 전투 시 나오는 대사들은 물론이요, 전투 중간중간에 있는 수도원 파트에서 그냥 스쳐지나가는 대화량만 합쳐도 어마어마합니다. 전 왠만한 스크립트는 전부 경험해보는 걸 중시하다 보니 처음 플레이할 때 그걸 다 듣고 있었는데, 좀 플레이하다보니 그래서는 엔딩을 못 볼 거 같더라구요. 그래서 그냥 적당히 듣고 적당히 스킵하기 시작했습니다. -. 그리고 그 모든 대화가 한글 더빙되어 있습니다. 번역이나 더빙 퀄리티에 대해서는 호불호가 갈릴 수 있겠습니다만, 일단 더빙 자체가 이질감 있다든지 번역이 누가 봐도 이상하다든지 하는 케이스는 많이 못 봤습니다. -. 전투 페이즈가 엑스컴에 비해서 나름 간결화되어 있고, 전술적인 요소를 고민해볼 여지가 꽤 있습니다. 전투 돌입 전에 각 영웅들이 8장 정도 되는 덱을 캐릭터별로 짜고, 3명의 영웅을 픽해서 전장에 돌입하면 그 3개 캐릭터의 덱을 합친 카드풀에서 카드를 뽑아 활용하게 됩니다. 매턴 기본적으로 3장의 능력카드를 쓰고, 그 턴에 선택한 1개 캐릭터는 무제한 이동권을 확보하게 되는 뭐 그런 식이죠. 능력카드들 대부분이 사용 시에 그 능력을 사용할 수 있는 위치로 이동하게 되기 때문에, 결과적으로는 최대 4번의 이동권을 가지고 있다고 생각해도 될 겁니다. 이런 제약들이 적당히 잘 엮이면 꽤 복잡한 전술적 요소를 창출해내는 측면이 있습니다. 그런데 이런 장점들만 있다면 미친듯이 세일판매를 하지는 않았겠죠. 2. 단점 -. 일단 마블코믹스 캐릭터들이 대중에게 친숙한 MCU 기반 모델링이 아니고, 성격도 코믹스 스타일에 가깝다 보니 이질감이 꽤 있습니다. 팀의 리더 이미지가 덧씌워졌던 아이언맨은 얼뜬 농담이나 좋아하는 식이고, 각 캐릭터의 생김새나 복장, 더빙성우 이미지가 MCU와는 동떨어져 있어서 생기는 이물감이 꽤 큽니다. -. 거기에 더해서 캐릭터성을 부각시키고는 싶은데 각본가의 능력이 그에 미치지는 못해서 그런건지, 대사들이 뭔가 잘 맞아들어간다기보다는 붕 떠있다는 인상이 강합니다. 캐릭터들이 서로 대사는 치는데 치밀하게 연결되어 있지 못하고, 대화를 한다는 느낌을 받기 어렵습니다. 가벼운 성격으로 해석된 캐릭터들이 너무 많다보니 서로 성격이 겹치는 영웅들이 너무 많습니다. 스파이더맨과 닥터스트레인지, 아이언맨의 대사를 적당히 섞어놔도 잘 구분이 되지 않을 겁니다. -. 영웅들은 어벤저스 소속과 미드나잇선즈 소속으로 구분되는데, 미드나잇선즈 캐릭터들은 친숙하다고 보기 어려운 친구들이 대부분입니다. 그나마 블레이드와 고스트라이더가 껴있긴 한데, 전 로비 레예스 고스트라이더를 이 게임에서 처음 접했어요. 지금 찾아보니 최초 등장한지 아직 10년이 되지 않은 캐릭터였네요. 나머지 친구들은 아예 초면이었습니다. -. 이 게임은 '헌터'라는 주인공 캐릭터를 전면에 내세우고 있는데, 찾아봐도 딱히 나오는 게 없는 거 보니 이 게임의 오리지널 캐릭터 같습니다. 제가 게임을 중간에 멈췄다 보니 중반 이후부터 흥미로운 요소가 나오는지는 모르겠습니다만, 주인공 캐릭터를 내세워서 몰입하게 하는 것이 제작진의 의도였다면 별로 성공적이지는 못했다고 생각합니다. 게임 도중 대화 선택지를 통해 빛과 어둠, 중립을 오갈 수 있다는 컨셉이고, 전투 시 카드풀과도 영향을 주고 받게 설계되어 있는데, 그 요소들이 별로 재미가 없어요. 각 캐릭터들과 대화할 때 선택지에 따라 호감도가 오르내리는데, 거기에 빛-어둠 게이지까지 신경 쓰려니 오히려 스트레스 요인으로만 작동합니다. -. 그리고 이런 단점들을 재껴놓더라도, 이 모든 것을 덮어버릴 정도로 수도원 파트가 별 재미가 없습니다. 영웅집단이 본거지로 삼은 수도원과 인근 부지를 돌아다니면서 재료를 수집하고, 보물상자를 찾고, 지역별 이벤트를 경험하도록 되어 있는데... 어설픈 반픈월드라고 할까요. 전투파트와 밀접하게 연결되도록 설계된 것도 아니고, 하다못해 진행템포도 서로 안맞습니다. '수도원 파트 하기 싫은 사람은 안 하셔도 되요' 정도로 받아들여질 수 있도록, 보너스 요소로 삼은 듯 한데... 그냥 재미가 없습니다. 주인공이 뛰어다니는 모습부터가 엉성하고, 수집요소도 계속 어두운 배경에서 눈을 부릅뜨고 찾아야 해서 피로도가 상당하며, 흥미로운 기믹들이 있는 것도 아닙니다. 결과적으로 얻을 수 있는 보상도 영웅별로 주어진 카드를 업그레이드해서 덱 파워를 올릴 수 있다는 건데... 애매해요, 애매해. -. 전투파트는 수도원파트에 비해서 훨씬 잘 설계되어 있긴 합니다만, 영웅별로 행동권을 가지는 게 아니고 무조건 카드에 의존하도록 되어 있는 시스템이 좀 답답할 때가 있습니다. 그리고 한턴에 쓸 수 있는 카드 숫자가 3장으로 제한된 것에 비해서, 적은 지속적으로 팝업되다 보니 좀 지루할 때가 있습니다. 억까 당하는 느낌이 들 때도 꽤 있구요. 3. 결론 각각의 파트로 분해해놓고 봤을 때에는 공들인 티가 꽤 나서 게임평론가들의 호평도 나름 이해가 가는 반면, 왜 흥행에 실패했는지 또한 납득이 가는 그런 게임입니다. 영화에 비유하자면... 개인적으로 굉장히 좋아하고 재밌게 플레이한 게임이지만 말씀하신 부분들이 좀 많이 아쉽긴 하죠
라이트 마블 팬유저 끌고 들어오는 쪽에 주력했어야 판매량이 좀 받쳐줬을텐데, 파이락시스 입장에서 마블에서 돈 주니까 차기작 준비하는 겸 이것저것 새로운 시도를 너무 많이해본 게 아닐까 싶은 생각이 드는 부분들이 있었고 그부분이 잘 안됐어서 쩝
단순 전투시스템만 놓고 보면 턴제 rpg 게임의 최고봉이라 생각합니다
