 요며칠 마츠모토 세이초의 "신과 야수의 날"이라는 중편소설을 읽었습니다. (사회파) 추리소설로만 세이초를 알고 있었는데, (작가 자칭) SF로 접하게 되니 신선하네요. 쿠바 미사일 사태 직후인 63년부터 연재되었던 배경에서 핵무기로 인한 멸망에 대한 공포를 그려낸 작품입니다. 동맹국으로 부터 오발사된 핵미사일이 약 70분 뒤에 도쿄에 떨어진다는 상황이 알려지며 벌어지는 군상극인데, 크게는 총리를 위시로 한 내각진(계엄사령부 포함)의 위기대응과 평범한 사무직 여성인 토야마 사치코의 도심 탈출기 정도가 비중있게 그려지고, 그 외로는 필사적으로 탈출하기 위해 방해되는 사람들을 죽여가며 폭주하는 사람들, 절망에 빠져 조용히 자살을 선택하는 사람들, 신에게 몰두하는 사람들(최후에 순간에 이들을 버리고 도망가는 성직자들), 죽음을 앞두고 예술/학술적 영감을 얻지만, 세상에 남길수 없는 사실에 절망하는 사람들, 도심에서의 핵폭발을 관측할 천재일우의 기회를 놓치지 않으려는 군/과학자들, 극한의 상황에 놓인 사람들 간의 폭력과 야만의 시간들, 문호의 상상력으로 정말 다양한 계층의 사람들의 에피소드를 짧지만 생생하게 그려냅니다. 코로나 시절 카뮈의 "페스트"가 예언서처럼 느껴졌던 것 처럼, 당장 한 시간 뒤에 모두가 죽게되는 상황을 알게 된다면 이 소설 속 상황이 재현될 것 같습니다. 또한, 총리가 탈출하는 과정에서 국민의 비난을 피하기 위해 정치적 계산으로 가족은 희생시킨다던지, 미증유의 재난속에서도 야당의 반대 뿐아니라 당내 파벌을 고려해야하고, 사태후 혼란을 수습한다는 핑계로 반체제 인사를 일거 체포를 계획하는 한편, 그동안 무시받던 군의 위상 제고와 방위예산 증액에 대해 생각하는 장면이라던지 사회파 추리작가답게 전후 일본의 정치적 특성도 빼놓지 않고 꼼꼼하게 묘사되어있습니다. 무거운 내용뿐 아니라, 마지막에 미사일 착탄 순간 무슨 노래를 방송에 틀어야 하나를 가지고 토론이 펼쳐지는 등 실소가 나오는 대목도 있습니다 ㅎㅎ 마무리도 식상할 수 있지만(나온게 벌써 60년전이니..), 개인적으론 깔끔하다고 생각하는데, 스포가 되니 궁금하신 분은 쪽지로 ㅎㅎ 아쉽게도 한국어 번역판은 없습니다만 ㅠㅠ 혹시 나중에 번역이 되거나 일본어가 가능하신 분은 200페이지 정도로 분량도 적고 재미도 있으니, 시간날 때 한번 쯤 읽어보시기 바랍니다.
