과학은 기존에 사용되고 있던 용어를 자기 마음대로 재정의한 뒤 그 용어를 기존의 뜻대로 사용하는 사람들을 '비과학적'이라고 부름으로써 교묘하게 자기의 지위를 획득하고 횡포를 부린다. 기존의 용어가 충분히 세밀하지 못하다면 새로운 용어를 만드는 것이 상식적인 사고방식이겠지만 과학은 그 대신 기존 용어를 재정의하는 방법을 택한다. 어떤 면에서는 표준어가 사투리에게 부리는 횡포와도 비슷하다. 나는 가만히 있는데 갑자기 저 먼 동네 사는 사람들이 와서 자기들이 하는 말은 '표준'이고 내가 하는 말은 '틀린' 말이라고 횡포 부리는 것이 표준어이지 않나. 과학도 마찬가지다. 여럿이 있는 자리에서 "금성은 참 아름다운 별이에요!"라고 말해 보자. 누군가는 "맞아요"라고 맞장구쳐 주겠지만 꽤 높은 확률로 누군가는 "금성은 별이 아니에요. 행성이지."라고 핀잔을 줄 것이다. 누구 맘대로 별이 아니래? 현대 천문학이 한국에 들어오기 한참 전부터 우리는 그저 하늘에 떠 있는 반짝거리는 것들을 통틀어서 별이라고 불렀던 것 뿐인데. 그래서 순우리말로 금성은 샛별이고 유성은 별똥별이고 혜성은 살별이다. 금성은 별이 아니라 행성이라고 핀잔을 주는 사람에게 행성(行星)의 '성'이 별 성(星) 자라는 것을 말해주면 뭐라고 대답할지 궁금하다. 아마 개별 한자로는 그렇더라도 행성이라는 단어는 우리가 요즘 쓰는 뜻으로 정의가 되어 있다고 하겠지. 좋다, 과학에서 엄밀한 정의가 필요할 때면 그렇게 새로운 어휘를 만드시라. 잘 쓰이고 있던 별이라는 단어를 자기 맘대로 가져가서 재정의하는 바람에 샛별과 별똥별과 살별은 별이 아니게 되는, 아버지를 아버지라 부르지 못하고 형을 형이라 부르지 못하는 홍길동 같은 상황 만들지 말고. 이런 현상은 다른 나라 다른 언어에서도 흔해 보인다. 물고기, 한자로 물고기 어(魚), 영어로 피시(fish). 옛사람들 입장에서는 물속에 먹을만한 게 돌아다니면 물에 있는 고기다 싶어 물고기라고 불렀을 터다. 중국에서는 물 근처에서 돌아다니면 다 물고기 어(魚) 자를 붙였기에 악어(鰐魚) 및 문어를 뜻하는 중국어인 팔조어(八爪魚) 에도 어(魚)가 들어가게 되었을 것이고, 영어에서도 물속에 있으면 다 피시라고 부르다 보니 불가사리는 스타피시(starfish), 해파리는 젤리피시(jellyfish), 조개는 셸피시(shellfish)가 되었다. 그런데 어느 날 과학이 나타나서 이런저런 분류를 하더니 이건 물고기이고 이건 물고기가 아니라고 자기 마음대로 정해버렸고, 그래서 악어(鰐魚)는 어(魚)가 아니고 스타피시, 젤리피시는 피시가 아니게 되었다. 이렇게 과학은 기존 명칭을 자기 마음대로 재정의함으로써 자기의 권위를 획득한다. 이미 존재하던 단어의 뜻을 마음대로 재정의함으로써 과학이 재미를 참 많이 봤다. 굴러온 돌이 박힌 돌을 빼는 것이고, 위에서 언급했듯 나는 우리 마을에서 조용히 잘 살고 있는데 갑자기 서울에서 언어학자들이 우르르 몰려오더니 "당신이 하는 말은 비표준어"라고 하는 것과 같은 현상이다. 과학은 좋지만 과학의 독선과 교만과 아집과 횡포는 싫다. 샛별은 별이 아니고 행성(行星)이라고 말하지만 행성 안에 별 성(星) 자가 들어가 있는 것에는 침묵하는 그 꼴, 참 별꼴이다.
