일단 들어가기 전에, 국내에 수입된 애니메이션들은 일단 진짜 "듣보"는 거의 없습니다. 어느정도는 인기가 검증된 작품들이 수입되는 경우가 많거든요. 그래서 나무위키 등에 "얘는 일본에서는 인기가 없었다"는 얘기는 일단 1차적으로 걸러 들어야 합니다. 대부분은 일본에서도 어느정도의 인지도를 가진 작품들인 경우가 많습니다. 최소 원작 만화가 인기가 있었다든가 하는 식으로 말이죠. 일본 내에 인지도에 대해서는 일본의 작품DB(https://sakuhindb.com/), 당시 평균 시청률 등을 참조했습니다. 혹시 현지 분위기는 아니던데? 하는 태클은 언제나 환영입니다.  일본에서의 이름은 "드래곤 리그"입니다. 제가 서론에서 "진짜 인지도가 낮은 작품은 거의 수입 안 된다"라고 했는데, 곧바로 반례 하나를 말씀드리게 됐네요. 이번에 거론되는 작품들 중에 "일본에서의 인기가 낮음"으로는 아마 가장 심한 만화가 아닐까 싶습니다. 일본에서는 정말로 별다른 주목을 받지 못한 작품인듯 합니다. 관련 자료를 찾기가 어려울 정도에요. 하지만 우리나라에서는 굉장한 인기를 끌었죠. 한국에서는 당시 이 작품을 안 보는 초등학생이 없을 정도로 선풍적인 인기였습니다. 물론 기술명으로라도 따라할 수 있었던 불꽃슛 같은 것에 비해 돌발이 슛은 좀 지나친게 아닌가 싶은...아예 따라할 수가 없는 무엇이긴 했습니다. 대신 다들 달릴때마다 야크의 포즈를 따라하던 생각이 납니다. 웬지 그러면 좀 빨라지는 것 같기도 하고 말이죠...  이 포즈 기억나시나요? 요즘은 "닌자 달리기"라고 나루토에 나온 포즈로들 알고 있더군요. - 캡틴 츠바사, 축구왕 슛돌이   반면 축구왕 슛돌이(일본명: 불타라 톱 스트라이커)는 일본에서 인지도가 상당히 낮습니다. 하지만 한국에서는 한 때 굉장한 인기를 자랑했었죠. 이렇게 된 데에는 일단 축구왕 슛돌이가 이름에서만 봐도 알 수 있듯이, 전국적인 인기를 쓸어담은 피구왕 통키의 후속작으로서 강한 푸쉬를 받고 방영된 영향도 분명히 있을 것 같습니다. 반면 캡틴 츠바사는 국내에서 "캡틴 날개"라는 이름으로 방영된 적이 있다는데, 저도 정말 몰랐습니다. 둘 다 축구 전술 따위는 알바 아닌 필살슛 승부 만화라는 점에서 유사한 점이 있습니다만, 이 점이 일본에서 축구왕 슛돌이가 인기 없는 데에 큰 역할을 했습니다. 이미 국민 만화 반열에 들어간 캡틴 츠바사가 있었으니 말이죠. - 달빛천사  달빛천사(일본명: 만월을 찾아서) 역시 국내외 인기의 차이가 좀 심한 편입니다. 일본에서는 일단 아침시간대(오전 7:30)에 방영된 데다가, 동시간대에 방영된 "별의 커비"에 밀려서 인지도가 낮은 편입니다. 시청률 2.4%정도...이정도면 일본에서도 잘 안 된 편이 맞습니다. 하지만 우리나라에서는 이 만화가 무려 원피스와 나루토를 찍어누른 당대 최고의 인기작이죠. 이 인기엔 전속 시절부터 논란과 인기를 함께 몰고다닌 투니버스 5기 이용신 성우가 큰 역할을 했습니다. 그 전에도 양정화, 윤여진 등 노래가 되는 성우분들이 계셨지만 아예 프로 가수 출신 성우였으니까요. 노래가 핵심적인 소재로 작용하는 아이돌물인 이 작품에는 더 어울리는 사람이 없었죠. 물론 당시에도 겨우 데뷔 1년된 초짜 전속성우가 심한 푸쉬 받아서 주연까지 한다고 말이 많았었습니다. 주연 성우가 매 화마다 연기력이 성장하는 놀라운 모습을 보였으니 말입니다.(...) 당시 연출인 신동식 PD가 큰 모험을 한 셈이죠. 이용신 성우가 직접 인증하기로 이 때 엄청나게 혼나면서 연습을 했다고 하더군요. 결과적으로 한국에서 달빛천사는 그야말로 초대박을 쳤고, 투니버스 리즈시절을 상징하는 대표작으로써 위상을 갖고 있습니다. 개인적으로는 여기서 마도카 역을 맡은 윤여진 성우의 팬이어서 마도카 언제 나오나 하고 챙겨봤던 기억이 나네요. 노래가 워낙 많지만, 제일 먼저 화제가 됐던 노래 "Myself"입니다. - 신의 괴도 잔느  달빛천사와 원작자가 같은 타네무라 아리나입니다. 눈 크게 그리는 걸로 유명한 분이죠. 이 작품 역시 투니버스 리즈시절 작품으로, 우리나라에서는 상당한 인기를 끌었지만, 일본에서는 시청률 부진을 이유로 조기 종영됐습니다. 원작은 550만부가 넘게 판매된 인기작인데 그거에 비해서는 잘 안된 편이라고 볼 수 있죠. 특이하게도 원작보다 애니메이션이 먼저 완결됐습니다. 제목에도 괴도가 들어가긴 하는데, 이분은 주로 물건을 없애버리는 쪽이라서 훔치지는 않습니다. 가끔 비교가 되는 천사소녀 네티는 물건을 직접 들고가는데, 잔느 쪽은 원거리 저격이 가능하기 때문에 아무래도 괴도로서의 정체성은 약한 편입니다. 대신 진짜배기 마법을 쓰기 때문에 마법소녀로서의 정체성은 강하지요. 일본에서는 "좀더 세일러문에 가까운 네티" 정도로 얘기가 되는 모양입니다. 달빛천사와의 공통점이 있다면 원작과 애니의 스토리가 완전히 딴판이라는 점입니다. 원작 스토리는 애니메이션에 비해서 좀 많이 하드합니다. 아예 기본 설정 자체도 좀 달라요. 한국에서는 지금까지도 투니버스의 오리지널 엔딩송 "Loving you 시간을 넘어서"가 명곡으로 회자되고 있습니다. SM의 대표 프로듀서 중 한 사람인 Kenzie가 보컬로 참여한 노래기도 하구요. - 우주용사 씽씽캅  우주용사 씽씽캅(일본명: 마신영웅전 와타루)은 반대로 일본에서의 위상에 대비해서 우리나라에서 인기가 좀 많이 덜했습니다. 이 작품이 우리나라에서는 그랑죠보다 훨씬 뒤에 방영되는 바람에 그랑죠 짭 같은 인상을 줬기도 했구요. 일단 작품 자체에 왜색이 있어서 우리나라에서는 잘린 회차도 많습니다. 근데 일본에서는 그랑죠가 이 작품 후속작의 빠른 방영을 위해 조기종영됐을 정도로 인기와 위상이 괜찮은 작품입니다. 그리고 이 만화가 먼저 방영되고 그랑죠가 방영됐기 때문에 그랑죠가 이 작품의 아류 취급을 받습니다. 그랑죠와 같은 감독의 작품입니다. 일본에서의 평균 시청률은 6.4% 정도였다고 하네요. - 시간탐험대  일본 제목은 "타임 트러블 톤데케만"입니다. 이 작품은 우리나라에서는 꽤나 큰 인기를 끌었고, 아직도 돈데기리기리 하는 주문과 호쾌하게 웃으며 등장하는 램프의 바바, 머리가 그야말로 꽃밭인 샬라라 공주를 기억하시는 분들이 많을겁니다. 근데 일본에서는 방영시간이 중간에 오전 5시 30분으로 옮겨지는 바람에 크게 인기를 끌지 못한 비운의 작품입니다. 하지만 우리나라와 대만에서 큰 인기를 끌었습니다. DVD판이 발매된 데에도 대만에서의 큰 인기가 결정적으로 작용됐다고 하더군요. 일본의 시청률 집계 자료를 찾기 어려울 정도로 잘 안 알려진 작품입니다. - 전설의 용사 다간  우리는 잘 모르지만 다간은 어린이가 주인공으로 나오는 슈퍼로봇물인 "용자 시리즈"중 하나입니다. 원제도 "전설의 용자 다간"이죠. 용자 시리즈로 우리나라에 잘 알려진 다른 작품들은 K캅스, 선가드, 마이트가인, 가오가이거, 골드런이 있습니다. 이 작품들이 다 같은 시리즈였다는 것을 모르시는 분들이 더 많을 겁니다. 전반적으로 굉장히 인기가 많았던 시리즈죠. 특히 우리나라에서는 K캅스, 선가드와 함께 슈퍼로봇물의 대표작으로서 중 가장 인기있는 작품이 다간입니다. 다간의 일본 내 인기도는 좀 특이한 편인데, 일본에서 시청률이 망했다 수준으로 낮게 나오진 않았습니다. 인기가 없진 않았다는 것이죠. 그냥 용자 시리즈 중에 낮은 편이다 정도였는데요, 이 용자 시리즈는 "로봇" 팔아먹으려고 하는 애니메이션인데 로봇 판매에서 좀 많이 망했습니다. 어차피 용자 시리즈는 시청률이 높은 편이 아니기 때문에 메카가 많이 팔려야 남는 시리즈였던 것을 감안하면 망했다고 봐야지요. 망한 이유는 좀 운이 없어서라고 봐야하는데, 경쟁 로봇이 "공룡전대 쥬렌쟈"...네 그 "파워레인저"입니다. 메가조드를 어떻게 이기나요. 이 희대의 막장 대진운 때문에 다간은 잘 된 메카 디자인에도 불구하고 비운의 작품으로 남게 되었습니다. 참고로 용자 시리즈 중 시청률 기준으로 일본 내 인기작은 K캅스(용자경찰 제이데커), 선가드(태양의 용자 파이버드)였다고 합니다. 가오가이거는 오히려 시청률은 매우 낮은 편이었다고 하네요. - 꾸러기 수비대  꾸러기 수비대(일본명: 십이전지 폭렬 에토레인저)는 우리나라에서는 80년대생들이 12간지를 전부 외울 수 있게 만들어준 엄청난 인기작이었죠. 저도 아직 12간지 맞춰보려면 똘기떵이...한번 돌려보고 맞춥니다. 근데 일본에서는 저작권이 꼬여서 2차 판권이 거의 소멸된 상태입니다. 그래서 비디오나 DVD등으로 발매가 되지 않은 상태구요, 시청률도 집계가 안 된 상태네요. 2차 판권시장이 사라져서 인지도가 강제로 낮아진 것이죠. 이 낮은 인지도를 보여주는 일면이 있는데, 만화가 인기가 적당히 있었으면 당연히 나왔을 알바트로스의 장난감조차 발매된 적이 없을 정도입니다. 인지도는 낮았지만 평가 자체는 괜찮았다고 합니다. - 일본에서 인지도가 낮다고 "오해 받는" 작품들  슈퍼 그랑죠(일본명: 마동왕 그랑조트)는 우리나라에서는 한 세대를 대표하는 작품으로서의 막강한 위상을 자랑하지만, 씽씽캅에 밀려서 강판되는 수모를 당하기도 했습니다. 이전에 국내에 알려진 바와 다르게 그랑죠가 일본에서도 적당한 인기와 인지도가 있다고 합니다. 다만 로봇물 치고는 "로봇이 덜 팔려서" 강판이 됐다고 합니다. 하긴, 팔릴만 한 인기가 있으니 OVA도 나오고 했겠죠. 특이할만한 점으로 일본에서는 여성 팬이 상당히 많다는 점입니다. 그래서 메카물의 원래 팬층인 남성들에게 상대적으로 밀리는 점이 인기가 덜하다는 인식이 생긴 원인이 아닐까 싶습니다. 또 우리나라에서 워낙 인기가 많기도 하니까요.  (혹시나 해서 말씀드리지만 이 글을 쓴 계기는 달빛천사입니다. 절대로 천사소녀 네티 때문이 아닙니다 ㅋㅋㅋ) 천사소녀 네티(일본명: 괴도 세인트 테일)는 우리나라에서는 25%에 달하는 정신나간 시청률을 보여서 아직도 역대 애니메이션 시청률 최상위권에 위치해 있습니다. 일본에서는 평균 시청률 6% 정도였다고 합니다. 이걸로 천사소녀 네티가 일본에서는 인기가 없다는 얘기가 돌았었는데, 일본은 당시에도 이미 케이블 TV가 보급되어 매우 많은 채널이 있었기 때문에, 여아 대상 애니메이션이 이 정도면 상당한 시청률이라고 하더군요. (세기의 인기작인 세일러 문이 10.7% 정도의 평균 시청률을 나타냈습니다.) 일본에서도 방영 27년이 지난 지금까지 꾸준하게 언급되고 있고, 게임과 뮤지컬까지 제작될 정도의 인기작입니다.  아따맘마(일본명: 아타신치) 역시 국내에서 워낙 큰 인기를 끌었기 때문에, 일본에서 인기가 낮다고 오해받는 작품 중에 하나입니다. 하지만 아따맘마 역시 330회나 제작되었고, 극장판까지 있는 인기 작품입니다. 다만 이런 가족드라마로 비교되는 작품이 "마루코는 아홉살", "사자에상", "짱구는 못말려"같은 전설은 아니고 레전드적인 작품들이라 그 작품들 보다는 못하다는 수준으로 보시면 됩니다. 인기가 없는 애니메이션이 330회나 제작될 리가 없지요. 일본에서도 굉장히 큰 인기를 끈 작품입니다.  피구왕 통키(일본명: 불꽃의 투구아 돗지 단페이)는 일본에서도 초등학생들에게 상당한 인기를 끌었고, 우리나라처럼 피구 열풍이 불었다고 합니다. 나무위키 등지에 애니메이션이 별다른 인기가 없고 원작 만화만 인기가 있었다는 설이 돌던데 이유가 뭔지 모르겠습니다. 아마 여기서 거론되는 만화중에 시청률이 10%정도를 찍었으니 캡틴 츠바사 정도 빼면 탑급일 겁니다. 무려 "짱구는 못말려"가 이 작품에 밀려서 초기 시청률이 저조했을 정도의 인기를 자랑했습니다. "좋아하는 스포츠 애니메이션" 앙케이트에도 항상 상위권에 랭크되어 있고, 제가 참조할 수 있는 거의 모든 문헌에서 애니메이션 피구왕 통키를 "대히트작"으로 언급하는데 왜 인기가 없다는 말이 생긴걸까요?
