일이라고 부를 만한 것을 하는데 있어서, '어떤 자세로 임해야 하는 가?'에 대해 적어본다. 우선, 필자는 세 가지를 생각해 본다. 1. 무언가를 하는데 있어서, 완벽하게 한다. 2. 무언가를 하는데 있어서 각각이 다소 완벽하지 않더라도, 마무리까지 할 수 있는 것에 초점을 맞춘다. 3. 무언가를 하는데 있어서 꾸준히 할 수 있어야 한다. 사실, 완벽이라는 것을, '흠이 없는 것', '더 이상 보완할 부분이 없는 것' 이라고 생각한다면, 무언가를 하는데 있어서, 완벽하게 한다는 것은 애초에 말이 되지 않는 것이라 생각한다. 어렸을 적에는 이러한 것에 대한 생각이나 개념이 없어서, 그저, 스스로 한 무언가가 늘 부족해 보이고, 늘 불만족스러웠던 것 같다. 그리고, 그러다 보니, 전체 일을 진행하는데 있어서, 끝까지 나아가지 못하고 중간에 포기해 버리는 경우가 많았던 것 같다. 지금은, 완벽이라는 것에 대한 생각을 바꾸었다. 완벽한 것은, '흠이 없는 것' 혹은 '더 이상 보완할 부분이 없는 것'이 아니라, '흠이 있지만 보완해 나가는 것', '부족하지만, 채워나가는 것' 등을 '완벽한 것'이라 생각한다. 뭐, 좌우지간, 이러한 관점에서 생각을 하면 결국, '2. 무언가를 하는데 있어서 각각이 다소 완벽하지 않더라도, 마무리까지 할 수 있는 것에 초점을 맞춘다.' 는 것이 일을 하는데 있어서, '완벽하게 하려 하는 것'보다는 좀 더 적합한 자세가 아닌가 생각한다. (이걸 요즘 말로, Done is better than perfect 라고 하는 것 같다.) 예를 들자면, 전체를 각각으로 나누어 모듈화를 잘 진행했다면, 처음 시작은 간단한 기술을 통해 각 모듈의 최소 기능 구현을 목적으로 하여 전체를 이루는 각 모듈들을 완성하고, 전체가 유기적으로 잘 돌아간다면, 이제, 각 모듈을 최신 기술 등을 통하여 업데이트해 나가는 방식이라 하면 되겠다. 참 당연하고, 간단한 것인데, 필자는 책을 읽지 않는 편이어서, 이러한 것을 아는데 까지 꽤나 오랜 시간이 걸린 편인 것 같다. 여기서 한 발 더 나아가서, '3. 꾸준히 하는 것'에 대해 생각해 본다. '꾸준히 하는 것'은 그것 자체 만으로도 큰 힘을 가지고 있는 것이라 생각한다. 예를 들자면, 하루에 100페이지의 글을 쓰는 것 보다, 하루에 1페이지 씩 100일 동안 글을 쓰는 것이 더 큰 힘을 가지고 있다는 것이다. 사업도 마찬가지다. 일회성으로 나가는 돈은 그 액수가 얼마가 되었건, 큰 문제가 아니다. 그러나, 작은 돈일지언정, 매달 꾸준하게 나가는 돈은 중요한 문제이다. 좌우지간, 그러면, 꾸준히 무언가를 해 나가기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 할까? 필자가 내린 결론은 다음과 같다. '꾸준히 할 수 있는 선 안에서 최선을 다하는 것' 쉽게 말해서, 필자가 글쓰기를 꾸준히 한다고 했을 때, '하루에 A4 한 페이지씩은 쓰자!' 라고 한다면, 필자는 이걸 매일매일 하지는 못할 것이다. 아니, 안 할 것이다. 그래서 필자는 생각한다. '하루에 한 문장 이상만 쓰자' 이 얼마나 부담이 없고 좋은가... 한 문장은 좌우지간 매일매일 쓸 용의가 있다. 정리해보면 다음과 같은 결론이 나오는 것 같다. '기한 내에 마무리 할 수 있는 선 안에서 완벽을 기하는 것' '꾸준히 할 수 있는 선 안에서 최선을 다하는 것' 이것이, 필자의 완벽이고 필자의 최선이라 할 수 있겠다.
