  1930년과 1979년 영상물로 나온 에리히 마리아 라마르크의 작품 서부 전선 이상 없다 넷플릭스 리메이크 판을 봤습니다. 기존 작품이 전쟁의 무의미 함과 젊은 생명들의 덧 없는 죽음을 그렸다면 이번 작품은 거기에 덧붙여 지휘층의 광신까지 내뱉는 작품입니다. 예전에 나온 영상물들이 너무 잘 나왔기에 이번 작품은 솔직히 말하면 등장인물과 제목만 빼면 소설 "서부 전선 이상 없다"와 아무 연관도 없기도 하지만 그럼에도 이 작품은 서부 전선 이상 없다를 잘 리메이크 한 작품 뿐만 아니라 요근래 나온 전쟁 영화들 중에서도 수준 높은 작품이라고 단언 할 수 있습니다. 작품은 크게 3갈래로 나뉘어 집니다. 하나는 주인공 파울 보이머의 시점의 1918년 11월의 종전 직전의 서부전선(원작은 10월 말까지로 기억)과 실존 인물인 마티아스 에르츠베르거(다니엘 브륄 출연), 전형적인 프로이센 호전광인 프리드리히 장군(작중에서 이름은 언급 안됨)으로 나뉘어져 있습니다. 작중 시작은 1917년 시기 서부 전선의 하인리히 게르버의 롱테이크로 시작됩니다. 치열한 양측의 포격전 이후 게르버는 친구의 죽음을 뒤로 하고 프랑스군 진영으로 진격하여 싸우다가 전사합니다. 그리고 전사한 시체는 현지에 매장되고, 의복은 수거된 다음 핏물을 빼고 수선을 한 다음 주인공 파울 보이머에게 전해집니다. 다른 사람의 이름이 박힌 것에 의문을 가진 보이머에게 모병관이 실수로 적힌 것 같다는 둥 얼버무리며 태그를 찢은 다음 주인공에게 다시 건네 줍니다. 그리고 그 태그는 이미 버려진 수많은 태그 중의 하나로 발 밑에 던져지죠. 보이머는 이후 친구들과 같이 서부전선에 투입되지만, 현시창인 서부전선의 환경은 그동안 가지고 있었던 호승심과 영웅심리가 싹 가시게 만드는데 성공합니다. 이윽고 프랑스군의 이동 탄막 사격으로 같이 입대한 친구를 하나 잃습니다. 그리고 시간이 지나 전쟁의 막바지인 1918년 11월이 다가오게 됩니다. 또 하나의 주인공 중 하나인 마티아스 에르츠베르거는 사민주의자로 자식이 전쟁터에서 전사하는 아픔을 가진채로 휴전 협정에 임합니다.(실 역사에서 마티아스 에르츠베르거의 외아들은 전쟁 중 스페인 독감으로 전선에서 사망합니다.) 이 흐름의 시작에서 에르츠베르거의 보좌관이 군인들 옆에서 군번줄 태그를 보며 전사자를 확인하는 작업을 지켜보는데요. 이미 흔한 일인지 군인들은 젊은 군인들의 죽음에 대수롭지 않으며 낄낄대는 모습을 보여주고, 잔뜩 쌓인 전사자 태그와 끝도 없이 나열된 전사자 이름에 보좌관도 질려하며 명단을 챙긴다음. 에르츠베르거에게 현실을 이야기 하죠. 사절단은 프리드리히 장군의 전선을 지나 독일제국이 항복한 콩피에뉴 숲으로 갑니다. 전선의 독일군이 순무빵을 먹거나 아니면 프랑스 전선의 음식과 통조림에 걸신들린 것 마냥 행동하는 것과 다르게 콩피에뉴 행 열차의 음식은 전선의 음식과 사뭇 다릅니다. 예전에 본 오리엔탈 특급 열차 살인사건 마냥 호화스럽기 그지 없습니다. 서부 전선의 군인들이 진흙 범벅에 꾀죄죄한 모습을 한 반면 열차의 사절단은 먼지 한 톨도 용납치 않게 깔끔하고 세련된 복장을 합니다. 전장의 군인들이 무의미 하게 죽지 않게 72시간의 휴전 시간을 달라는 에르츠베르거의 간청에 실존 인물이자 프랑스군 대원수인 페르디낭 포슈 원수는 만년필을 주며 말합니다. "그럼 (항복문서에)서명하시오" 사절단은 이런 굴욕적인 상황에 일부(데틀로프 폰빈터펠트 소장)는 결사항전을 주장하고, 다른 한 편의 정치인은 만약 결렬되면 볼셰비키가 식량과 열차를 모두 가져갈 테니 군인들이 명예롭지 못하게 죽을거라고 말합니다. 에르츠베르거는 내 아들은 전장에서 죽었는데, (죽은) 아들의 명예는 어딨냐고 일갈한 후 총사령관 파울 폰힌덴부르크의 허가를 얻어 항복 문서에 서명합니다.(실 역사에서 마티아스 에르츠베르거는 서명 후 포슈에게 악수를 청했지만, 페르디낭 포슈는 그걸 무시합니다.) 마지막 이야기의 흐름인 프리드리히 장군은 전형적인 프로이센 장군입니다. 아버지와 같은 연대에 복무하게 된 프리드리히 장군은 아버지가 지난 비스마르크 전쟁(보오전쟁, 2차 슐레스비히 전쟁, 보불전쟁)에서 모두 승전하며 영광을 누린 것과 다르게 자기는 벨 에포크의 시대에 태어나 반세기가 넘도록 전쟁에서 영광을 누리지 못한 것에 불만입니다. 최전방의 군인들이 담배도 제대로 못피우고, 밥도 제대로 못 먹는 것과 다르게 그는 담배 한 개피를 피우고 포도주를 마시고 스테이크를 자르며(심지어 개에게 그 한 조각을 던집니다.) 신세한탄을 합니다. 그리고 전쟁에서의 패배는 모두 사민주의자 탓이라는 배후로부터의 중상에 단단히 심취한 프로이센의 망령이기도 합니다. 그는 영화 중반 무의미한 돌격에서 전선의 바로 앞 자신의 저택이자 사령부에서 전투를 직관합니다. 그의 관점에서 전투는 그냥 단순히 포화가 튀는 전쟁이다면, 그 현장에 있는 보이머와 친구들, 존경하는 선임인 카친스키와 탸덴에게 있어서는 생사를 오가는 치열한 전장입니다. 이걸 보며 왜 작품 이름이 "서부 전선 이상 없다"란 이유를 조금 알 것 같습니다. 장군들에게 있어 전장의 포격은 흔한 일상이자 거시적 관점으로는 그 이상의 진전도 퇴보도 없는 평행 상태이기 때문 일 것 입니다. 이 영화 중간의 이름도 없는 전투에서 독일군은 막대한 인명 피해를 무릎쓰고 프랑스군 전선에 도달하지만(+통조림 파밍질) 곧이어 시작되는 반격(여기서 배필1 하던 사람들은 느끼겠지만 생샤몽 뽕을 단단히 느낄 수 있습니다.)에서 친구인 크로프를 비롯 많은 전우들을 잃고 후퇴합니다. 그리고 가장 유명한 장면인 프랑스군 병사를 죽인 보이머의 죄책감도 나옵니다. 전장에서 간신히 살아서 부대에 온 보이머의 눈 앞에 펼쳐진 것은 군기가 완전히 박살난 독일군의 모습입니다. 초창기 군기가 강한 군대로 명성이 높던 독일제국군 군대는 이시기에 완전히 소멸되고 준도적떼에 불과한 독일군의 무리만 남게 됩니다. 이들은 결국 독일이 항복하고 내일 11시에 종전이 선언된다는 것에 흥분하여 마구 날뛰고 술을 퍼 마시고, 배식(그래봤자 순무와 감자 밖에 없는 수프)에 미쳐 날뛰는 준폭도가 됩니다. 한편 연대장인 프리드리히 장군은 그런 현실을 도저히 납득 못하고 다음날 종전 직전에 일제히 공격명령을 내리게 됩니다. 반항하는 병사들은 모두 총살시키고 자신은 후방 사령부에 있는 채로 전 병력을 빼앗긴 전선으로 돌격시킵니다. 이번 작품은 앞서 말했다시피 각색이 많이 된 작품입니다. 30년 작과 79년 작이 워낙 뛰어나니 원작을 그대로 따라간다는 것을 포기하고 그냥 자기만의 길을 가는 듯한 작품입니다. 그리고 원작의 주인공들 중에 산 사람마저도 가차없이 죽이는 작품입니다. 거의 냉혹한 1차대전의 분위기를 잘 살린 작품 중에 탑이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 그리고 주인공 보이머의 내면의 파괴도 작품 속에서 잘 나타나 있습니다. 처음의 깔끔했던 보이머의 얼굴은 전선에 와서 부터 꾀죄죄 해지더니 작품 중반 프랑스군 살해 부분에선 얼굴의 절반이 진흙으로 뒤덮여 지고, 마지막엔 얼굴 전체가 진흙으로 뒤덮여 집니다. 보이머의 인간성이 상실되는 과정을 진흙을 통해서 잘 보여준 것이죠. 79년 작이나 30년 작품에 비해 프랑스군 살해에 대한 표현력도 수준 높은, 어쩌면 이 부분에서 만큼은 전작을 뛰어넘는 작품이기도 합니다. 칼에 맞아 절명하지 못하고 켁켁 되는 프랑스 군과 그의 가족 사진을 보고 죄책감을 느껴 뒤늦게 나마 치료하려는 보이머의 모습은 전쟁의 비극을 잘 보여주는 모습이라 생각합니다. 이 영화는 자비조차도 느껴지지 않는 작품입니다. 한국 전쟁 영화인 "고지전"과 미국 드라마 "밴드 오브 브라더스"에서 나오는 심지어 적과의 만남에서도 느껴지는 연민이나 동정, 인류애는 털끝만큼도 느껴지지 않습니다. 완전히 지옥도 무법천지 입니다. 독일이나 프랑스나 살려달라는 적군을 가차없이 죽이고 불태웁니다. 전쟁의 본질이 무엇인지 가장 잘 보여준 작품이라고 생각합니다. 영화 마지막에 나오던 프랑스군 병장도 종전이 되자, 살아있다는 안도의 기쁨보단 계속되는 전쟁의 광기에 지친 표정을 지으며, 진창에 주저 앉아 있습니다. 모두 전쟁이 끝난 것에 기뻐하지 않습니다. 다만 지쳐서 어떠한 감정도 없어 보입니다. 실 역사와 다르게 독일군은 상대적으로 물이 고이지 않은 고지대에 위치하며, 마지막날에 영화에 있었던 대규모 전투는 존재하지도 않습니다. 그러나 영화는 전쟁의 광기가 무엇인지 보여주기 위해 그런 사소한 고증 위반은 무시하고 오로지 Krieg를 외치던 독일의 군국주의 사회의 광기와 거기에 휩쓸린 평범한 사람의 운명을 아주 잘 보여줬습니다. 그리고 기존 30년 작품과 79년 작품과 다르게 마티아스 에르츠베르거와 페르디낭 포슈의 모습도 비추는 과감한 선택도 했는데, 다니엘 브륄이 연기하는 에르츠베르거는 평화를 간청하면서도 힘이 없는 무력한 정치가의 모습을 그리고 페르디낭 포슈는 과연 위기의 프랑스 군을 잘 이끈 원수답게 어떠한 미사여구에도 흔들리지 않는 과단성 있는 모습을 잘 보여줬습니다. 솔직히 1917과 비교하면 주제의식과 영상미 면에서는 1917이 근소한 차로 이기겠지만, 전쟁 연출과 가차없는 전장의 현실을 잘 보여준 작품이라면 이 서부 전선 이상 없다. 리메이크 판이 이길거라 생각합니다. 넷플릭스 계정을 가지신 분들이라면 한 번 쯤 볼 만한 작품입니다.
