 기술적으로는 훌륭하나, 감정적으로 설득되지 않는다. 박쥐 이전의 박찬욱 영화를 전부 챙겨보다가, 박쥐 이후의 영화들을 보지 않았다. 박해일의 전근을 기준으로 절반 갈라져 있는 이 영화는, 송강호의 타락을 기준으로 절반 갈라져 있던 박쥐를 연상시켰다. 신부에서 흡혈귀로 몰락하는 송강호처럼, 박해일은 품위 있는 형사였으나 붕괴한다. 최후에 송강호는 김옥빈과 함께 산화했으나, 박해일은 산화한 탕웨이를 찾아 홀로 해변가를 해멘다는 점이 다를 뿐이다. 엔딩크레딧이 올라가는 동안 왓챠피디아에서 훑어본 어떤 평가는, 이 영화에서의 탕웨이를 '불행에서 벗어나기 위해 필사적으로 노력하는 진취적 인간상'으로서, 과거 팜므파탈로 소비되었던 캐릭터들을 긍정적으로 재해석했다는 식으로 썼다. 틀렸다. 그런 식의 선해라면 탕웨이의 두번째 남편과, 그 두번째 남편을 찔러죽인 범인 역시 그와 다르지 않은 기준으로 선해해야 할 것이다. 적어도 영화에서 드러나거나 암시된 내용만을 고려한다면, 탕웨이는 흔한 사이코패스 연쇄살인범에 지나지 않는다. 탕웨이는 높은 지능과 탁월한 관찰력으로 상황을 정확히 파악하고, 거기에서 도출된 최적해를 연기하여 완전 범죄를 꿈꾸는 자에 불과하다. 목적이 수단을 정당화하며, 목적의 달성을 위해 수단을 선택하면서, 사회의 룰을 전혀 신경쓰지 않는 교묘한 무법자다. 예쁘고 매력적이니 박해일과 관객의 면죄부를 받아들었을 뿐. "내가 그렇게 나쁩니까?", 네 나쁩니다. 나에게 있어서 이 영화의 문제는 그 언저리에서 시작한다. 수단의 정당화를 납득할 수 없는 나로서는 탕웨이가 맡은 캐릭터에서 매력을 느끼지 못하고, 박해일에게 한정된 수준으로 이입할 수 밖에 없다. 그러니 영화가 펼쳐놓는 장치들이 실로 적합하다는 것을 인정하면서도, 박해일이 극중에서 마주하는 내적 갈등에는 몰입할 수 없다. 그러고 나니 남는 건 박해일 특유의 '품위있는' 목소리와 각본을 훌륭하게 소화하는 배우들의 연기 뿐이다. 그리하여 나는 그 모든 호평들을 이해하되, 납득할 수는 없게 되었다. 말씀하신대로 감정적으로 설득할만한 재료들이 영화에 많지 않은건 사실인것같습니다.
하지만 저는 탕웨이가 존재 자체로 너무 매력적이어서, 그냥 가만히 있어도 사랑에 빠지는게 너무 잘 이해되는 느낌이라.. 배우의 존재로 그 문제를 해결해버린것 아닌가 생각했습니다. 박찬욱 감독도 그래서 이 역을 꼭 탕웨이가 해야한다고 한게 아닐까 싶고요..
