일주일 내내, 그냥 버드맨 이야기가 하고 싶었습니다. 저는 버드맨 최고의 전문가는 절대 아닐겁니다. 다만 그 뭐랄까 버드맨이라는 영화는 굉장히 대단한 장면들이 많아요 각본, 캐스팅, 배우의 연기, 촬영, 조명, 각도, 초점, 음향, 음악, 등등등등 근데 이런 것들을 영화를 한번 보면 알수있냐? -쉽지 않습니다. 어떻게 영화를 봐야 이런 것들을 볼수 있냐고요? -그냥 영화를 여러번 보면 됩니다 (저는 버드맨을 대략 8-9회 정도 봤읍니다) 와 어떻게 이런 각본을 썼지? 설정을 이런 식으로 짰다고?? 어떻게 이런 캐스팅을 해냈지? 어떻게 이런 장면에서 이런 연기를? 와 촬영 이렇게 해낸거 실화냐 조명 지리고 렛잇고 캬 음향 감독님 일 제대로 하시네! 와 여기서 초점을 저렇게 던졌어? 응? 이 촬영 각 지금 일부러 이렇게 잡은거임? 이 영화의 리얼리티는 어디에 있는거야? 등등등등 굉장히 짚고 넘어가야할 지점이 많아요 문제는 이게 많아도 너무 많다는 겁니다. 그리고 사실 보통의 영화를 감상하는 킹반인들은 주로 플롯/이야기/주제, 이런것 중심으로 영화를 봅니다. 하지만 버드맨의 플롯/주제라고 하면 왕년에는 흥행영화 배우였지만 이제는 아내와도 이혼당하고 이미 퇴물이 되어버린 중년의 남성 배우가 연극이라는 순수 예술 분야에 도전하면서 인정받고 싶은 마음에 주제넘게 각본/주연/감독/제작을 다 맡았다가 사서 고난을 겪는 영화입니다...만 ...사실 버드맨의 가장 취약한 점이 플롯/이야기/주제.에요. 하지만 보통의 킹반인들은 이야기 중심으로 영화를 보기 때문에 '아는 영잘알 친구가 이 영화가 명작이래서, 어느 날 큰맘먹고 봤는데 난 이 이야기가 왜 명작인지 잘 모르겠는데?' 하는 류의 영화감상이 솔직한 진심인 경우가 많을것 같습니다. 그래서 그냥, 제가 아는 만큼 이 영화가 제게 보이는 만큼 글로 장황하게 서술하고자 합니다. 아, 결론은 미리 여기쯤 대충 적어놓고 글 끝에는 결론을 빼먹을 생각입니다. [결론: 버드맨 짱짱맨] [영화가 원테이크다] 문자 그대롭니다. 영화가 처음 시작해서 끝날때까지 한테이크로 쭉 가요. 물론 이게 정말로 처음부터 끝까지 다 원테이크로 가는 영화냐? 사실 그렇지는 않습니다. 영화의 맨처음/엔딩씬 직전 씬은 커트/테이크가 여러군데 이뤄지죠. 그리고 영화의 대부분을 차지하는 롱테이크 서사시 부분도 사실은 여기저기에 테이크를 끊고 갈수 있는 트릭들이 있습니다?? 암전 / 눈부심 빈 벽 / 빈 복도 비추기 등등등...... 하지만 그런 트릭들을 감안하더라도 영화의 한테이크 한테이크가 굉장히 길다는건 변함 없으며 이 롱테이크를 유지하기위해 감독이 굉장한 고난도 기술들을 이리저리 선보이는걸 영화내내 목격할수 있습니다. 유튜브에 등장하는 버드맨의 장면중 하나를 일단 한번 보시죵. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtWP94WWaL0 0:44 지점에서부터 주인공(리건 톰슨) 뒤에 버드맨이 나타납니다. 이 버드맨은 담당 배우가 버드맨 코스튬을 입고 리건 톰슨과 같은 카메라 앞에서 연기하는 중입니다. 다만 버드맨의 날개는 배우가 함께 착용한 분장의 일부가 아닙니다. 날개는 CG에요. 1:06초 장면을 보시면 버드맨 배우가 순간 리건 톰슨에 완벽하게 가려집니다. 날개만 빼꼼 보이죠. 그 직후 장면부터 등장하는 날아다니는 버드맨은 리건 톰슨과 같은 카메라에서 촬영하고 있는 버드맨이 아닙니다. 따로 와이어를 달고 실내에서 녹색 배경을 놓고 촬영한뒤 햇빛아래의 리건 톰슨/ 녹색 배경에서 와이어를 매단 버드맨/ 날개CG 세개를 컴퓨터로 합성하여 한씬으로 만들어 낸 것입니다. 1:30초에 리건 톰슨이 손가락을 딱 하고 튀긴 뒤 카메라를 왼쪽으로 돌리면 등장하는 경찰특공대원들은 실제 스턴트 배우들이 연기한 것입니다. 여기부터는 실제 장면과 실제 배우들과 CG효과들이 뒤섞이죠. 그럼 2:07초에 재등장하는 리건 톰슨은? 아까 버드맨처럼 와이어를 달고 녹색 배경앞에서 따로 촬영한뒤 컴퓨터로 합성한 것입니다. 리건 톰슨이 솟아오를때 건물 창문에 리건 톰슨이 비춰지죠? 창문에 비치는 리건도 컴퓨터로 합성된 것입니다. 컴퓨터로 합성된 리건이 사라지는 정확한 시각에 건물안에서 기다리던 배우가 창문을 열고 날아오르는 리건에게 시선을 건네주죠. 근데 1:30까지 등장했던 리건 톰슨은 야외에서 햇빛조명을 받으며 촬영했는데 2:07부터 등장하는 리건톰슨[A]은 하늘로 솟아올라야 하니 실내에서 와이어를 달고 촬영해야하쥬? 여기서 조명의 각도가 실수 한다거나 조명의 세기가 실수한다거나 하면 관객들은 어마어마한 이질감을 느끼겠쥬? 제가 이렇게 말해주고나서 영상을 다시 보면 아, 아까 길거리를 걷던 리건 톰슨은 실제 카메라가 찍은 톰슨이고 날아오르는 리건톰슨은 CG로 합성한거구나 하는 티가 나는걸 알수 있긴 합니다. 근데 이걸 제가 말 안해줘도 영화보면서 이미 아셨다고요? 1회차에 이걸 알아보신 선생님은 킹반인들보다 대단히 눈썰미가 좋으신 것... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX3VbKEooWQ 바로 아까 리건톰슨이 솟아오른 직후에 이어지는 씬입니다. 0:24초 지점에, '주연배우'가 뮤직 큐를 넣습니다?[B] 감독이 아니라 배우가 큐를 넣어?? 선넘네?? 근데 바로 다음에 뒤에서 등장한 엑스트라 배우가 리건 톰슨의 팔을 잡자 음악이 꺼집니다. [뇌피셜] 저는 개인적으로 이 엑스트라 배우가 이냐리투 감독 본인의 카메오 출연이라고 생각하는데 아무리 기사를 찾아봐도 이냐리투 본인이 버드맨에 카메오출연한단 얘기를 못찾았습니다. 저는 그래서 이 장면을 감독도 아닌 주연배우가 지 맘대로 뮤직 큐 싸인을 넣자 감독이 씬에 난입해서 음악을 꺼버리는 장면아닌가?? 싶은데 이 엑스트라 배우의 이름이 이냐리투라고 영화 크레딧에도 나오지 않음... 정확한 증거는 없지만... 저는 개인적으로 이 사람은 이냐리투라고... 생각함... 영화에 나오는 이 배우의 귓바퀴 모양과 아카데미 시상식에서 수상하는 이냐리투 감독의 귓바퀴 모양이 굉장히 닮았음... 다만 이냐리투 감독의 목소리는 바리톤 느낌이 있는데 이 엑스트라 배우의 목소리는 살짝 테너톤이에요. 그래서 혹시 다른 사람이면... 아몰랑! 유튜브 영상 기준 0:47초에 리건 톰슨이 잠깐 카메라에서 완벽하게 사라집니다. 직후에 옥상에서 뛰어내리는 리건 톰슨[C]은 따로 촬영한뒤 컴퓨터로 합성한것 아까 [A]에서 솟아오르는 톰슨을 촬영할때도 거리를 걷는 톰슨이 야외 조명을 받았던 것과 마찬가지로 [C]에서 추락하는 톰슨을 촬영할때도 옥상에서 야외조명을 받았던 톰슨과 같은 색감이 나게끔 조명을 엄청 신경써줘야함. 조명 암튼 대단함. [B]에서 큐를 넣었던것처럼 날아다니는 씬 마지막에도 리건 톰슨은 퇴장하면서 극장 입구를 지키는 알바에게 '음악 끄세연'이라고 말하며 퇴장합니다. (유튭기준 2:44초) 여기서는 감독이 개입 못하겠징? ㅁㅎㅎㅎ [왜 감독은 이 쌩쑈를 하면서 영화를 원테이크로 찍었을까요??] 그냥 있어보이고 싶어서 그런 것같죠? (대충 설득력이 있어하는 짤) (물론, 영화를 그냥 있어보이고 싶어서 찍는것 같은 웨스 앤더슨 같은 감독도 있습니다만) 이냐리투 감독이, 버드맨에서 원데이크로 영화를 전부 표현한건 아마도 이유가 있습니다. 저는 감독이 [가]'영화속 진실'과 [나]'현실의 진실' 그리고 [다]'영화속 상상'과 [라]'영화속 연극의 진실'의 경계를 굉장히 불분명하게 표현하기 위해 이 4가지 종류의 서로 다른 진실을 원테이크 안에 모조리 비빔밥처럼 다 뒤섞어 표현했으며 어디까지가 진실이고 어디까지가 허구인지 관객이 명확하게 파악하는 것을 방해하는 장치중 하나로 롱테이크로 영화를 찍는 기법을 도입했다고 생각합니다. [가]'영화속 진실'과 [나]'현실의 진실'이 뒤섞인 사례 (아까 그 뇌피셜) 음악을 틀어버리는 리건 톰슨에게 이냐리투 감독이 개입하여 음악을 끔. 1 마이클 키튼과 그의 배역 리건 톰슨은 실제로도 배트맨/버드맨에 출연했던 왕년에 미남형 배우로 성공했던 영화 배우이고 지금 현재(최소한 버드맨 개봉시점에서는) 별볼일없는 흔한 중년배우일뿐. 1.1 버드맨의 목소리는 배트맨 목소리랑 똑같음. 2 에드워드 노튼과 그의 배역 마이클 샤이너는 둘다 작가주의적 배우로서 고집이 굉장히 셉니다. 3 리건 톰슨은 전 아내와의 대화에서 조지 클루니와 함께 탄 비행기가 추락할뻔한 에피소드를 이야기하며 조지 클루니와 함께 탄 비행기가 추락한다면 조지 클루니만 뉴스에 나오고 나는 뉴스에도 안나오겠지. 하며 자괴감을 드러냅니다. 실제 배우인 마이클 키튼과 조지 클루니의 관계로 별반 다르지 않았으며 조지클루니와 마이클 키튼은 둘 다 배트맨 배역을 맡았던 경력이 있습니다. 4 실제로도 명배우들인 우디 해럴슨, 마이클 패스벤더, 제레미 레너의 이름과 그들이 실제로도 출연중인 영화들이 영화내에서 언급되며 실존하는 유명감독인 마틴 스콜세지의 이름이 언급됩니다. 5 리건 톰슨이 마지막으로 무대에 오르기 위해 백스테이지를 걷는 장면에서 배경음악에 깔리고 있는 재즈 드럼을 연주하고 있는 드럼세트와 드러머가 카메라에 잡힘. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O8wiwu0elA 6.1 위 씬에서 등장하는 영화적 진실 6.1.1 리건 탐슨에게 사진을 찍자며 말 거는 엑스트라 배우, 버드맨 구리다고 욕하는 엑스트라 배우들은 감독이 배치한 배우들입니다. 6.2 위 씬에서 등장하는 현실의 진실 6.2.1 영화에 등장하는 타임스퀘어는 세트나 CG가 아닌 실제 타임스퀘어 현장입니다. 마이클 키튼 배우 본인이 실제로 속옷만입고 타임스퀘어를 활보해야 했습니다. 그것도 최소 두번. 한번은 영화에 직접 쓰일 씬을 찍기위해 두번은 딸이 리건에게 보여주는 유튜브 영상을 찍기 위해 6.2.2 타임스퀘어에 배경에 등장하는 회사 로고들을 일일이 다 찾아다니며 사용허가를 받아야 했다고 합니다. 6.2.3 타임스퀘어를 직접 통제할수 없었기 때문에, 타임스퀘어에 마칭 밴드를 고용해 정확한 시간에 공연해줄것을 요청했다고 합니다. 관광객들이 마칭밴드에 눈이 쏠린 틈에 재빠르게 촬영한 것. [가]'영화속 진실'과 [다]'영화속 상상'이 뒤섞인 사례 - 리건의 초능력이 아닌 것 非초능력1. 리건이 거리를 걷다 술을 마시는 와중에 거리에서 멕베스를 열연하고 있는 무명 배우가 리건의 시선에 들어옵니다. 이 무명배우는 갑자기 리건을 똑바로 쳐다보며 머리에 조명을 맞아 부상당했던 랄프가 부상당하기 직전 리건에게 건넸던 그 대사중 일부를 정확하게 되읊습니다. 非초능력2. 바로 윗문단의 [실제2] 장면은 영화속 진실일까요? 영화속 상상일까요? 역시 뒤섞여 있습니다. 다만 非초능력2가 영화속 상상이라고 판단하는 것은 100% 관객이 단독으로 판단하는 부분입니다. 非초능력2 장면에는 감독이 '이 장면이 영화속 상상이라는 힌트'를 전혀 제공하고 있지 않기 때문입니다. 암튼 영화에는 이렇게 영화 내부에 반영된 현실의 리얼리티, 영화 내부의 리얼리티를 혼란스럽게하는 감독의 의도된 연출들이 뒤섞이면서 1회차로는 이 배우가 어떤 배우이고 무슨 배역인지가 잘 안와닿습니다. 특히 연극에 등장하는 레슬리/로라는 얘가 아까 그 레슬리인가? 얘가 로라인가? 아까 리건 아이를 누가 임신했네 어쩌네 하지 않았나? 그런건 잘 기억도 안나고 구분도 잘 안가요. 리건/마이클/레슬리가 이 영화속 연극에서 1인2역을 맡고 있습니다만 저만해도 1회차에서는 그런건 파악이 안됬습니다. "?? 뭐야? 쟤 왜 갑자기 엔딩에서 병원에 입원해있음?? 아까 그 총 진짜 총이었음??" 제 1회차 감상은 이랬습니다. 1회차로 딱 보고 넘어간 뒤에도 이 영화는 훌륭한 영화인가? 제 생각엔 [아닐것 같아요] 그래서 일반 관객들은 버드맨이 뭐 그렇게 좋은 영화라고 하던데 '나도 뭐 그냥 좋은 영화라고 하지뭐' 하고 넘어가기 쉽습니다. (저도 그랬습니다.) 지금와서 몇번을 돌려보고 나서 생각해보니 왜 그랬는지 알것 같아요. 애초에 관객이 영화를 보면서 중간중간에 휙휙 지나가는 사소한 디테일들을 다 기억하면서 영화를 봐야 영화가 이해가게끔 만들어 놓은 탓입니다. 기본적으로 기억해야할 디테일한 설정들이 많고 이리저리 연결지어가며 심어놓은 장치들이 많습니다. 1회차에서 버드맨이 왜 훌륭한 영화인지 와닿지 않았다? (삐빅 정상입니다 하는 짤) [구도/촬영면에서 대단한 것들] 1 구도가 대단함 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTxh6DHhyzM 안그래도 눈이 큰 배우가 목을 앞으로 길게 빼고 연기하고 있고 카메라는 머리가 더 크게 보이고 몸이 작아 보이게끔 구도를 잡고 있습니다. 마치 감독이 '자 지금부터 엠마스톤이 중요한 연기를 할껍니다. 다들 어디 핸드폰 그런거 보지말고 여기만 보세요'라고 말하는것 같죠? 엠마 스톤의 연기에 몰입하지 않을수 없게 잡아버린 구도 2 조명이 대단함 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SocsmHMWPI0 제가 물론 조명의 전문가는 아닙니다 하지만 이 41초째의 장면은 아무리 봐도 모르겠습니다. 왼쪽에 서있는 리건, 중앙에 서있는 레슬리, 오른쪽에 서있는 제이크 레슬리가 서있는 복도 뒷 무늬, 레슬리의 셔츠 색깔까지 한커트에 다 보임. 심지어는 50초 경에 마이크 뒤로 보이는 배경까지 보임 도대체 조명을 어떻게 주고 있는거에요? 왜 그림자 않짐요? 왜 다 보임? 3 각본 / 배우 / 카메라가 협업하여 함께 초점을 던져버리는 장면  이 장면에서는 초점이 왼쪽에 있는 에드워드 노튼과 오른쪽에 있는 마이클 키튼에게 있지만  이 장면에서는 초점이 마이클 키튼의 시선을 따라가면 있는 뒷 배경에 있는 배우에게 가있죠? 대사의 흐름과 키튼의 시선을 카메라 초점이 정확하게 따라감... 크으... 이거 알고 영화 보면 영화 보다 지립니다. 아 속시원하다 이제 버드맨 할얘기 다함. 수다 끝난 기분이에요. 아 이 후련한 기분. 상쾌해 룰루랄라. 아 그리고 위 내용들은 영화를 계속 돌려보다보면 누구나 발견할수 있는 겁니다. 위 내용중에는 틀린 내용이 있을수 있읍니다. 틀린 내용이 있다면?
