소설 '소립자'를 통해 우엘벡이 보는 설거지론의 본질은 이게 아닐까 합니다. 1. 소립자 中 "오늘날의 처녀들은 한결 신중하고 합리적이다. 무엇보다 학업 성적에 신경을 많이 쓰고 장차 좋은 직업을 갖는 데에 필요한 일을 하려고 노력한다. 남자들과 데이트를 하긴 하지만. 그건 여가 활동이나 심심풀이일 뿐이다. 거기에는 성적인 쾌락과 자기 도취적 만족감이 거의 대등하게 작용한다. 더 나이가 들면, 그녀들은 이러저러한 조건을 따져 가며 합리적인 결혼을 하려고 애쓴다. 그녀들은 대개 상대의 사회적 위치와 직업적 조건이 합당하고 취미나 기호에 공통점이 있을 때 혼인을 결정한다. 사랑 따위는 중요하지 않다. 물론 그런 결혼이 행복할 리 없다 [(행복하기 위해서는 사랑이 가져다 주는 융합적이고 퇴행적인 상태에 빠질 수 있어야 한다. 하지만 요모조모 따지며 실리를 챙기는 사람은 이런 상태에 빠질 수 없다)] 오늘날의 여자들은 그런 선택을 통해서 앞 세대 여자들을 괴롭힌 정신적인 고통에서 벗어나리라고 기대한다. 그러나 이 기대는 이내 실망으로 변한다. 열정의 고통이 사라진 뒤에 남는 것은 권태와 공허감, 늙는 것과 죽는 것에 대한 두려움뿐이다. 어차피 모든 것을 가질 순 없고 후회할 수 밖에 없어요. 개인적 차원에서 보자면 최대한 후회의 시간과 양을 적게 가져가는 게 중요한거 같아요.
그리고 서구의 사랑-섹스-결혼 담론은 한국에 그대로 적용하는게 불가능하다는 생각입니다.
한국만큼 섹스와 성관념을 숭상하는 국가가 얼마나 있을지가 의문이예요.
성범죄가 온갖 흉악 범죄들 이상으로 중히 다뤄지고, 피의자로서의 권리를 강력히 제한하고 있지요.
동시에 처녀성에 대한 평가 역시 엄격하게 이뤄집니다. - 비단 설거지론의 문제가 아니라 그전에 워홀러에 대한 안 좋은 시선 등
게다가 국가적으로 성상품을 이슬람 근본주의 국가들만큼이나 규제하고 있지요.
