시작하기 전에 스포일러 있습니다. 오징어 게임의 테마는 목숨을 건 놀이죠. 정확히는 그런 위험한 놀이가 주는 경고의 메세지를 담고 있곤 하죠. 헝거 게임, 배틀 로얄, 런닝맨(유명한 그 예능이 아닌 스티븐 킹 원작의 소설)까지 당장 생각나는 창작물만 해도 수두룩하고, 현실에서조차 고대 로마에서 검투사들을 데려다가 즐겼던 유구한 전통을 가진 주제죠. 어쩌면 스파르타쿠스의 이야기가 오징어 게임의 조상쯤 된다 해도 틀린 말이 아니라 생각합니다. 목숨을 건 놀이가 주는 자극은 누구에게나 소중한 목숨을 누군가의 유희로 소모한다는데서 오는 잔인함이겠죠. 현대 시대 이후를 배경으로 하는 작품이라면 필수적으로 자본이란 계급을 비판하기 위한 목적으로도 많이 쓰이는 테마일 때가 많습니다. 오징어 게임조차 그런 클리셰에서 크게 벗어나지 않았죠. 작중 대사에서도 언급되지만, 오징어 게임은 모두에게 주어진 공평한 기회로 소개되곤 합니다. 누구한테 하나 밖에 없는 목숨을 걸고 동등한 조건에서 게임을 통해서 승리자를 가리니까요. 물론 궤변이 따로 없죠. 전세계로 몰려온 갑부들이 술을 마시며 구경하는 모습은 영화 호스텔에서 보여준 살인 놀이와 다를게 없습니다. 그래서 작중에서도 나오는 누구에게나 평등하다는 말 자체가 형편 없게 받아들여집니다. 그걸 내뱉는 캐릭터의 내면조차 다루지 않았으니 별 감흥이 없으니까요. 남는건 초반부터 쏟아지는 죽음이 주는 자극이 주는 재미일 겁니다. 게임의 감시자들은 탈락자들을 가차 없이 총으로 쏴 죽이는데 예고편에서도 나온 무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 파트에서 이미 질려버려요. 수백명을 조준해서 쏴죽이는 모습을 보고 나면 그 다음은 그들이 무섭지도 않고, 그렇다고 분노의 감정을 가지기도 어려워요. 여담으로 무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 파트는 단역들이 총에 맞아 죽을 때 겁에 질려서 어디선가 날아오는 사격이 맞는 리액션이 아니라, 총에 맞을 부위까지 다 기억하고 움직이는게 눈에 보여서 좀 깨더군요. 그걸 슬로우 모션까지 넣어서 연출한 건 좀 아니지 않나 했어요. 반대로 주목해야 할 부분은 서로 죽여서 이겨야 하는 참가자들의 내면인데 일부 캐릭터는 인상적이나, 대부분은 식상해요. 후반부까지 살아남으면서 분량을 챙기는 조연은 극한에 몰리니 저러는구나하고 이해하는게 아니라, 왜 저러지 할 때가 있는데 한미녀라는 캐릭터가 특히 심했던거 같아요. 전 보면서 저 캐릭터를 저렇게 소모해도 되나 싶었어요. 또 드라마의 핵심인 놀이도 아쉽더군요. 제목이 오징어 게임인데 오징어 게임 파트가 제일 재미없었던건 그렇다 치고, 후반부 파트는 전부 별로였어요. 유리 다리 파트는 허겁지겁이란 단어가 확 떠오를 정도였고요. 엔딩에 도달하면 설마 싶었던 반전이 예상한대로 그대로 드러나고 결말마저 끝나기 몇분전에 맞추는 제 모습을 보고 다른 사람도 비슷하겠구나 싶었습니다. 그래도 이 드라마에서 건진건 눈빛으로 설득력을 주는 박해수 하나 뿐이지 않을까 싶네요.
