게임방송사들은 다른 대회들과 무엇이 달랐기에 살아남았을까? 그 비결은 간단히 말해 '작은 몸집', 그리고 '쉬운 접근성' 이었습니다. 훗날의 WCG를 비롯한 국제게임대회들이 그렇듯 원래 스타크래프트 대회들은 며칠 이내의 짧은 기간동안 열렸고, 금방 우승자가 가려졌습니다. 그런데 기간이 짧다고 해서 상금이 방송사 스타리그에 비해 적었던 건 아닙니다. 겨우 3일만에 끝나는 WCG 우승 상금이 2만 달러였던 것만 봐도 알 수 있죠. 그 밖에도 며칠만에 끝나는 대회들의 우승상금이 수백만원은 되는 경우가 흔했지요. 그리고 이런 대회들이 수십개씩 열렸습니다. 키글처럼 연간 단위로 진행하는 대회들은 그에 걸맞게 상금도 굉장히 많았습니다. 그러나 온게임넷 스타리그는 1주일에 1일만 경기일을 가지고, 약 3개월에 걸쳐 치러지기 때문에 1년에 3회 정도 밖에 열리지 않습니다. 그런데 프리챌배 스타리그는 우승상금이 2천만원이었고 한빛소프트배 부터는 1천만원으로 줄어들죠. 그나마 프리챌배는 준우승 상금이 없었기에 총 상금 규모는 별 차이도 없었을 겁니다. 하물며 안정적으로 경기 출전을 보장할 수 있는 리그제도 아니고, 16강에서 4인 조별리그 이후 8강부터 토너먼트입니다. 우승상금 외에도 출연료가 별도로 있기는 하나 그리 큰 액수는 아니고요. 우승상금 6백만원에 준우승 상금은 아예 없었던 겜비씨의 1차 KPGA 투어를 비롯하여 ITV나 게임티비 등의 자잘한 방송사 대회들은 뭐 말할 것도 없습니다. 그 대신 이 방식은 스타크래프트의 인기가 줄어들고 자금이 끊겨 대회의 몸집을 줄여야 했던 당시 환경에 더없이 적합했습니다. 한 번 경기하면 일주일 내내 재방송을 틀며 시청자들이 볼 수 있는 특성상 후원사에게도 꽤 매력 있는 방식이었고, 케이블 방송이 설치되어 있기만 하면 티비로 편하게 경기를 볼 수 있으니 팬들을 위한 접근성도 훌륭했죠. 공중파가 아니라 소규모 케이블을 이용했기에 경기 중계를 위해 소요되는 비용도 당연히 적었을 겁니다. 반면 PKO나 키글은 대회의 규모가 너무 컸고, 공중파 중계는 줄어들어가는 스타크래프트의 덩치에 비해 비용이 너무 컸으며 인터넷 중계는 시대를 너무 앞서간 탓에 활성화 되지 못 했습니다. 또한 스타크래프트가 예전에 비해 인기가 줄었다 하나 여전히 과거의 국민게임이었기에 '하는 게임'이 아닌 '보는 게임'으로의 지위를 유지시켜줄 잠재적 수요층은 어마어마 했고요. 과장 좀 보태서 그 당시 1~20대 남성 전부가 수요층이었으니까요. 즉, 게임방송사들은 줄어든 시장에 적응할 수 있는 작은 몸집과 경기 수를 가졌고, 대신 한 경기 한 경기의 밀도와 홍보효과를 높임으로써 살아남았다고 할 수 있습니다. 이게 가능했던 것은 인터넷이 발달하기 이전 케이블 티비란 매체가 가졌던 장점 덕분이고요. 이 과정에서 대회의 수요층도 스타크래프트를 직접 즐기는 팬들에서 스타리그를 '보는' 것을 즐기는 팬들로 대체되었지요. 프로게이머들을 메이크업까지 시켜가며 방송 경기에 내보내거나, 손발이 오그라드는 찬사와 별명들을 붙여주거나...이런 것들이 바로 그런 눈물겨운 노력의 일환입니다. 이 방식은 상상 이상의 성공을 거두었습니다. 스타리그는 점점 인기를 모았고 지방 투어, 체육관 결승 등의 이벤트에서 흥행에 성공하며 점점 발전해나갔죠. 여기에는 스타크래프트를 홍보 수단으로 삼아서 팀 운영부터 대회 후원에 이르기까지 아낌없는 투자를 해준 KTF의 역할이 매우 컸습니다. 이는 훗날 SKT의 창단, 팬텍의 창단 등으로 이어졌고요. 하지만 이 방식은 어디까지나 프로게이머들의 희생을 전제로 한 것이었습니다. 방송사는 돈 덜 쓰고 대회를 열 수 있고, 팬들은 쉽게 경기를 볼 수 있어 좋았겠지만 대다수 프로게이머들은 방송사에서 주는 돈만 가지곤 먹고 살 수가 없었죠. 대기업팀 소속으로 제대로 된 연봉을 받는 게이머는 극소수였고, 비기업팀 소속 선수들의 삶은 우리가 상상하는 것 이상으로 비참했을 겁니다. 이 당시 대기업팀을 제외한 팀들은 스폰서가 붙어봤자 정말 기본적인 생활비나 용돈 수준의 돈을 받았다고 하는데, 저는 아직도 이 때의 비기업팀 선수들이 대체 뭘 먹고 살았나 궁금합니다. 겉으로 보이는 덩치는 나날이 커져갔으되, 내실은 속빈 강정이었던 겁니다. 이게 꼭 방송사 잘못은 아니고 그저 스타가 인기가 없어서, 방송사를 제외한 대회들이 사라졌기에 일어난 비극이지만요. 따라서 방송사가 주도하는 스타리그의 시대가 된 이후부터는 프로게이머들의 돈 버는 방법도 달라질 수 밖에 없었습니다. 이전까지는 대회에 참가하여 상금을 버는 상금 사냥꾼으로서 게이머들이 생존해 왔다면 이제는 방송에 나가서 얻은 인지도를 가지고 돈을 만들어야 하는 시대가 온 것이죠. 임요환이 결승전 전날 주방용품 행사 알바를 뛰었다는 전설적인 이야기처럼, 그 당시 프로게이머들이 대학교 축제에 꽤나 자주 출몰했다고 합니다. 이렇게 '인지도를 돈으로 바꾸는' 연금술의 최종 목표가 바로 대기업의 후원과 창단이었습니다. 선수들이 열악한 환경에서 게임을 지속했던 이유도 언젠가는 기업팀에 들어갈 수 있으리란 희망이었겠죠. 이 기형적인 구조의 스타리그는 06년에 들어서야 마침내 모든 팀들이 기업의 후원을 받으며 급한 불을 끕니다. 그리고 마침내 지속 가능한 모델이 되어 해피엔딩...이 되었으면 좋았겠지만 이는 또다른 문제의 시작이었습니다. 자, 위에서 말했듯 대기업들의 돈을 이끌어낸 것은 스타리그에 대한 높은 관심과 인기였습니다. 비록 04년부터 팀들이 참여하는 프로리그가 인기를 모았다고 하나, 팬들을 매료시키는 중심은 스타리그였다는 거죠. 그런데 스타리그는 개인전이고, 예선을 치러서 소수의 인원들만 진출하며, 토너먼트입니다. 여기서 이해관계의 충돌이 발생합니다. 기업이 원하는 건 특정 게이머의 우승이 아니라 자사의 홍보였고, 꾸준한 노출이었죠. 따라서 대기업들의 진출과 함께 자연스레 스타크래프트 대회의 중심은 팀들이 맞붙는 프로리그가 될 수 밖에 없었습니다. 그리고 더 많은 노출을 원하는 스폰서와 각 구단들의 이해관계에 따라 경기 숫자는 급격히 늘어날 수 밖에 없었죠. 결국 게임단들은 2007년, 프로리그의 주5일제를 발표합니다. 어? 그런데 아까는 경기 숫자가 적었던 것이 방송사의 성공의 비결이라고 하지 않았나? 네. 이것이 바로 스타리그가 망하는 순간까지도 해결할 수 없었던 근본적 모순이었습니다. 그리고 팬덤을 둘로 나누어 격렬한 대립을 하게 만든 민감한 주제였지요. 주5일제를 반대하는 쪽은 고전적인 '스타리그'의 수호자였습니다. 이들은 선수 개개인의 옥석을 고르고 스타를 배출하는 것은 개인리그의 몫이며, 따라서 개인리그가 중심이 되어야 하는데 프로리그가 무색무취한 경기를 양산해내면서 개인리그를 고사시킨다고 주장했죠. 반면 찬성하는 쪽은 스타크래프트가 더 이상 개인 간의 대결이 아닌 팀 간의 대결이며, 꾸준하게 스타 선수들을 볼 수 있는 프로리그가 중심이 되는 것이 옳다고 했죠. 이들의 논쟁은 영원히 답이 나올 수가 없었는데, 양쪽의 주장을 한 마디로 요약하면 '니들은 프로리그가 재밌냐?' '재밌는데?' 였거든요. 그리고 어느 한 쪽이 틀린 것도 아니었어요. 먼저 리그의 운영 측면에서 보면, 현실적으로 개인리그 중심으로 돌아가자는 고전주의는 불가능했습니다. 사실 기업 입장에선 스타리그 같은 '미개한' 방식을 이해하기 힘들었을 겁니다. '아니, 우리가 우리 기업 홍보하려고 팀 만들었지, 아무개 우승 시켜주려고 돈 쓰나?' '리그도 아니고 토너먼트라서 인기 스타가 꼭 출전한다는 보장도 없어? 게다가 운빨에 따라 잘 하는 놈이 탈락하는 일도 빈번해? 세상에 그런 종목이 어딨나?' 사실 이게 정론이죠. 다른 스포츠 종목에서도 우승팀은 토너먼트로 가릴지언정 반드시 풀리그를 중심에 놓고 운영하는 것만 봐도 알 수 있습니다. 축구에서 각 리그가 싹 사라지고 챔스나 유로파만 남아서 탈락한 팀들의 스타들을 시즌 끝날 때 까지 못 본다면 어떻겠습니까? 더군다나 스타라는 게임과 토너먼트의 특성은 진짜 잘 하는 친구만을 걸러내지도 못 했어요. 즉, 고전적인 스타리그 방식은 극도로 몸집을 줄여야 했던 초창기에나 어울리는 방식이었던 겁니다. 그 결과 스타리그 말기로 가면 대단히 모순적인 일이 벌어집니다. 어떤 선수가 프로리그에서 아무리 잘 해도 개인리그에서 못 하면 평가절하 당하는데, 만약 무명 선수가 인기 선수를 이기고 상위라운드에 진출하면 그건 또 리그 흥행을 망치는 존재라며 비웃음을 당하고, '이번 대회는 방송국 PD가 깡소주 따겠네' 라는 반응들이 나왔어요. 이것을 해결하려면 개인리그의 규모를 키워서 풀리그로 돌려야 하는데, 그러면 돈도 많이 들고 경기 숫자도 늘어납니다. 기업들의 의향은 결코 그게 아니었고요. 따라서 이러한 목소리는 완전히 무시되고 프로리그 주5일제가 계속 시행됩니다. 그러면 개인리그 중심론을 외치는 팬들의 목소리는 틀렸을까요? 아니요. 이들이 우려했던대로 양산되는 경기, 몰개성한 경기양상에 지쳐서 팬들이 하나 둘씩 떠나갔습니다. 스타리그가 망한 이후 많은 사람들 입에서 공통적으로 나오는 것이 주5일제로 인한 획일화 이야기인 것만 봐도 알 수 있지요. 스타가 지금의 롤처럼 지속적으로 인기를 끄는 게임이기라도 했다면 이 쏟아지는 경기들을 팬들이 소비해줄 수도 있었을 겁니다. 그러나 이미 오래 전에 직접 하는 게임으로서의 대중성을 잃은 스타는 그럴 수도 없었죠. 이는 해결 불가능한 문제였습니다. 딱 하나, 이 문제를 해결까지는 아니더라도 어느 정도 완화해줄 수 있는 방법이 있긴 했습니다. 게임 양상이 비슷해진 것은 맵이 비슷해졌기 때문이고, 맵이 비슷해진 것은 종족간의 밸런스 때문이었는데, 프로리그는 개인리그와 달리 맵 밸런스가 망가져도 됩니다. 테란맵이면 테란, 저그맵이면 저그를 내보내면 되니까요. 그러니 좀 더 자유롭게 맵을 만들 수 있죠. 그 대신 이러면 동족전이 양산되어 재미가 없어지는데, 과거 프로리그에 있었던 동일맵 동일종족 연속출전 불가 규정을 되살렸더라면 다양한 경기 양상도 볼 수 있고 감독들의 머리싸움을 보는 재미도 있었을 겁니다. 사실 이것도 당시 팬들이 주장하던 사안입니다만 결국 게임단의 반대로 시행되지 못 했습니다. 요약하면 이렇습니다. 게임 방송사는 스타의 인기가 떨어진 위기의 시대에 몸집을 줄이는 전략으로 살아남아 전성기를 누렸다. 그러나 이는 장기적으로 유지될 수 없는 부실을 떠안은 구조였고, 이를 해결하기 위해선 자본의 유입이 필요했는데 그 대가로 몸집을 키워야만 했다. 그러나 스타크래프트의 인기와 팬덤은 이 불어난 몸집을 감당해줄 수 없었다. 결국 게임 방송사와 게임단들은 이 모순을 끌고 가다가 더 이상 규모를 유지할 수 없을 만큼 인기가 하락했을 때 손을 들 수 밖에 없었다. 이상의 사실은 우리가 e스포츠라고 부르던 방송사 중심의 스타리그가, 사실은 여러가지 복잡한 시대적 배경 속에 만들어진 기형적인 구조였음을 보여줍니다. 직접 게임을 즐기지는 않지만 리그를 소비해 줄 수는 있는 잠재적 수요층을 폭넓게 보유한 게임이 있는데, 그 게임의 권리를 쥐고 있는 게임사가 대회 주최를 방임하였고, 해외에서 스타 대회가 멸종했기에 국내에서의 독점적 지위만으로 배타적인 생태계를 조성할 수 있었으며, 인터넷을 활용한 영상 송출 기술이 발달하기 이전이라 방송이란 매체의 힘을 발휘할 수가 있었던 것이 게임 방송사의 성공의 비결이지요. 다시 말해 한국식 e스포츠란 이렇게 많은 전제조건들을 주렁주렁 달아놓은 상태에서만 가능한 방법이었던 겁니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 이 방법이 일반적인 해법이라 믿으며 e스포츠라 이름붙여 다른 게임에 적용하려 했고, 이는 모조리 실패했습니다. 여기에 딱 맞는 사례가 워3죠. 워3는 한국에서 제법 많은 게이머를 확보했지만 스타처럼 국민적 인지도를 보유하진 못 했었고, 해외에서 많은 인기를 끌었기에 국내에 선수들을 잡아둘 수도 없었죠. 스타1의 시대가 끝나고, 온게임넷은 LOL로 방향을 틀었으며 초기에는 상당한 성공을 거둔 것으로 알고 있습니다. 그러나 시대가 변해도 한참 변했습니다. 라이엇은 블리자드와 달리 자사의 권한과 이윤을 포기할 생각이 없었고, LOL은 세계적으로 인기를 끄는 현역 게임이었으며, 인터넷 중계 기술은 크게 발전하고 대중화 되어 TV의 입지를 위협했습니다. 이 거대한 흐름 속에서 온게임넷은 버텨낼 수가 없었죠. 과거의 키글, PKO가 그랬던 것 처럼요. 온게임넷이 사실상 폐국의 길을 걸은 것에 대해 많은 사람들이 이게 문제다, 저게 문제다 라는 분석을 내놓습니다. 그 분들의 말대로 온게임넷이 범한 잘못이 있긴 하겠으나, 그러한 문제가 없었다 한들 온게임넷의 생존은 불가능했을 것이라 확신합니다. 지금까지 케케묵은 지루한 이야기를 길게도 했습니다. 그런데 이 글을 쓴 이유는 이제와서 그 시절을 추억해달라~같은 향수가 아닙니다. 오히려 그 반대죠. 그 시절의 실상을 정확히 알아야 한다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 게임 방송사의 시대 이전에도 게임 대회는 한국이나 해외에나 얼마든지 있었으며 방송사가 주도한 시절이 결코 아름답기만한 시절이 아니었고, 오늘날 세계적으로 활성화 된 게임에게 있어서 폐쇄적이었던 한국 e스포츠의 구조는 남의 나라 이야기일 뿐이죠. 그러니 단지 게임이라는 분류에 같이 묶인다는 이유만으로 특정 개인이나 단체가 오늘날의 e스포츠를 만들었다...라고 말하는 것은 진실로 가소로운 이야기 입니다. 마치 FIFA 월드컵이나 NBA의 성공을 두고 '베이브 루스가 없었으면 이 또한 없었다' 라고 하는 수준이죠. 무엇보다도 기업팀들이 스타리그에 진출한 2006년 이후 게임단에 소속된 프로게이머들이 받았던 대우는 열악함을 넘어선 부당함과 착취의 수준이었습니다. 10대 소년들이 1년 내내 하루 10시간 이상 숙소에서 게임만 하기를 강요받으면서 천만원도 못 되는 연봉을 받는 경우가 부지기수였고, 선수 권익을 위해 존재해야 할 FA 제도는 선수에게 팀 선택의 자유가 없는 최고가 입찰 방식으로 사실상 노예 경매나 다름없었습니다. 이러한 환경에 대해 책임이 있는 자들, 혹은 e스포츠의 관계자 라는 직함을 달고서 1,20대 젊은이들의 꿈을 빨아 부와 지위를 얻은 이들 중 이 시절의 부당함에 대해 올바르게 증언하며 반성하는 이는 여태까지 본 적이 없습니다. 그러긴 커녕 몇몇 사람들이 그 시절의 직함을 이용해서 다른 종목의 다른 자리에 앉아 과거와 비슷한 일을 하려다가 큰 사건을 일으켰다고 알고 있습니다. 몇년 전, LOL에서 '틀타 적폐'라는 단어가 유행했다고 들었습니다. 그 시절을 통째로 암흑의 시기였다고 몰아가며 부정하는 것은 잘못이겠으나, 과거에 대한 올바른 인식 없이는 추억도 의미가 없을 것입니다. 이것이 낡고 재미없는 과거의 이야기를 길게 써내려간 이유입니다. 첨언하자면 엠비씨게임은 몰라도 온게임넷은 변화하는 환경에 적응하려고 노력을 나름 했습니다. 아프리카tv조차 대중화되지 않았던 무려 2008년에 자체 인터넷방송국을 열고 스타리그 예선까지 중계하는 시도를 했어요. 그저 온게임넷이 몰랐던건 자사 방송정도 중계하는 자체 플랫폼으로 살아남기란 쉽지 않다는것과 인터넷 비중이 높을수밖에 없는 게임방송이 살아남으려면 케이블TV라는 베이스 자체를 벗어던졌어야 한다는거였죠. 아마 2021년의 현대인이 지금의 인터넷방송 환경을 다 알고 돌아가서 온게임넷 사장을 해도 비트코인 투자해서 밑빠진독에 물붓기 하는거 말고는 살릴 방법이 없을겁니다. 기존 인원 다 쳐내고 업종을 바꾸는건 조직으로서 가능한 선택이 아니니까요.
