1.랑종은 한국어로 무당으로 번역된다.이에 반해 영어로는 the medium으로 번역되는데, 일반적으로 무당이라하면 영매라기 보다는 샤먼(샤머니즘)에 가깝다.그런데 영문으로 the medium이라 번역된 것을 보았을 때, 영매(mediumship)라는 뜻으로 감독은 사용한 것으로 보인다.이 점에서 재밌는 점은 샤먼으로 보이는 '님'은 접신을 주장하지만 접신의 형태로서 신이 존재함을 보여주는 장면은 나오지 않는다.이에 반해 악령에 해당하는 원혼과 귀신이 들어간 '밍'은 접신의 형태로서 혼과 신의 존재를 드러낸다.이 것이 주제의식을 드러내는 한 종류로 보인다. 2.이 이야기는 작게는 원한을 가진 영들의 복수극이자, 크게는 선과 악의 대결로 보여진다.우리 실상에서 귀신을 비롯한 악으로 칭해지는 자연재해, 범죄 등은 일부러 그 존재를 증명하려는 노력을 기울이지 않아도 실체로서 나타난다.그에 반해 선으로 비추어지는 종교적 신의 경우 사람의 '믿음'이라는 실체가 없는 허상에 불과하며 이들의 영향력 또한 눈에 보이지 않는다.결국 인간은 실체로 드러난 악에 맞서고자 '믿음'을 통해 '선'에게 구원을 요청하지만 '선'은 묵묵부답일 뿐이며 이로 인해 인간은 무력감을 느끼게 된다. 3.이 영화의 경우 페이크다큐나 파운드 푸티지등 좀 더 관객의 입장에서 실질적으로 공포가 다가오게 만드려는 시도를 하나, 결국엔 스너프 필름에 불과한 모습을 보인다고 생각한다.그 이유로는 예상 가능한 복선과 스토리가 있다.금지된 개고기의 판매(억울한 동물의 혼). 부계의 원죄(노동자들에 의해 돌팔매질로 사망한 조부.공장에 방화후 사망한 부친.근친상간등).등 악령이 들어올만한 요소들이 충분하며 이로 인해 관객들은 '밍'에게 악령들이 접신되었음을 인지하고 있다.물론 '님'과 '노이'간의 갈등을 통해 그 악령의 정체가 '바얀 신'일 수도 있다는 여지를 남겨두긴 하나, 그것이 그 의심을 거둘만큼 충분한 근거를 제공하지 못한다.'버드박스'나 '미스트'와 같은 예시를 보면 우리는 그 공포의 존재가 무엇인지, 그것이 어떠한 일까지 저지르게 될 것인지, 알 수가 없는 상태에서 악의 습격을 맞이한다.이에 반해 랑종은 공포의 존재가 눈에보이며 어떠한 일이 벌어질지는 눈에 선하다. 4.초자연적인 악이 접신된 인간병기(?)가 존재한다면 그것이 다음에 벌일 일은 예상이 가능하다.예상 가능한 일을 두고 그것이 벌이는 것을 잔인하게 묘사한다고 해서 공포가 되는 것은 아니다.그저 잔인하고 기괴할 뿐이다.공포라는 것은 예상치 못한 지점에서 그 실체를 알 수 없을 때 발생한다 생각한다.그러나 예상가능한 지점에서 예상가능한 행동과 그 원인을 알 수 있는 대상이 벌이는 것이 전부인 이 영화는 공포라기 보단 잔인한 영상물에 가깝다. 5. 거기에 더해 카메라맨들의 영상을 담겠다는 투철한 직업의식은 눈물 겹다.누가 봐도 정상상태가 아닌 딸이 자살을 시도할 때까지 방치하고 카메라를 통해 확인된 어둠속 기행을 보고도 그 것을 구속하거나 감금하지 않는 가족들의 행위는 멍청하다는 생각을 넘어 실소를 자아낸다.'반전일까?'하는 부분에서 반전은 없고 '복선인가?'하는 부분은 복선이 맞다.이처럼 재미없기도 쉽지 않다. 6.거기에 더해 관음증적인 카메라의 프레임과 단순한 악의 기행 중 하나라고 표현하기에는 그 빈도가 너무 잦고 역겨운 수준으로 여성의 동물적이고 생리적인 모습을 그린다.이 부분이 더더욱 변태적이고 질이 낮은 영화의 수준을 표현한다.최악이다. 7.결론적으로 내게 있어 랑종은 제대로 된 스토리를 갖춘 영화인 척 하고 싶은 스너프 필름이자 포르노이다.혹자는 공포가 아닌 오컬트이니 이해가 가능하다 하는데 내가 보기엔 상식 밖이다.유전과 같은 영화나 나홍진의 전작인 곡성에서 보여준 제대로 된 오컬트의 모습은 온데 간데 없다.변태적이고 관음증적이며 무식하기 짝이 없는 인간의 모습을 보여주는 영상물이다.제대로 먹힌 마케팅과 청불이라는 딱지가 주는 호기심으로 인해 영화가 상업적으로는 성공할 수 있다 생각한다.그렇지만 영화적으로는 정말이지 실패작이다. 별점은 1.5/5점. 또한 밍에게 깃든 악의 정체나 그것이 작동하는 이유나 원인이, 말씀하신만큼 뻔하지도 않다고 생각합니다. 사실 밍에게 깃든 것이 무엇인지는 작중에서 정확하게 확인해주는 바가 없습니다. 싼티가 온갖 생물들의 원혼이 밍의 몸에서 뒤섞여 군집을 이룬 것이라고 설명해주기는 하나, 그러한 진술의 신뢰도는 자신이 '바얀'이라고 주장하는 밍(또는 그녀에게 깃든 악령)의 말에서의 그것과 크게 다르지 않습니다. 요컨대, 그건 오로지 인물의 입을 통해서만 말해지는 바입니다. (뭐 후반부 들개의 영혼에 빙의된 것으로 보이는 신도들의 모습을 보면, 그러한 추론이 자연스럽기는 하겠죠.) 그러한 군집설을 채택한다고 해도, 문제는 충분히 간단해지지 않습니다. 군집이란 곧, 다른 것과 명확한 구획을 두고 구분될 수 있는 단독의 어떤 것이 아니라, 여러 사물의 성질이 한데 뒤섞여 있다는 것입니다. 그래서 '님'은 초중반 그것의 정체를 추측하는데에 애를 먹는 모습을 보이죠. 처음엔 죽은 그녀의 오빠 멕이라고 했다가, 바얀 신이라고도 했다가, 그 다음엔 모르겠다고 밍의 가족들 앞에서 시인하죠. 정말 바얀 신이 내린줄 알고 내림굿을 시도 한다거나, 실종된 밍을 찾기 위해 한달반 동안 멕에게 기도를 올리다가 뒤늦게 실수를 깨닫기도 하고요. 그것이 무엇인지를 온전히 파악하고 있지 못했기 때문에, 그에 대한 대처에 있어서도 난점이 있었을 수밖에 없었던 것이죠. 마지막 클라이맥스를 장식하는 퇴마 의식은 결국 실패로 끝나게 되는데, 의식이 끝날때까지 잠겨 있어야 하는 문이 의식이 끝나기 전에 열렸기 때문이죠. 1차적으로는 현혹 당했기 때문인데, 근본적으로는 그럴 수 있다는 걸 몰랐기 때문입니다. 필요하다면 아기 소리도 꾸며낼 수 있는 괴물인데(군체설의 입장으로 보면, 밍의 몸안에 아기의 영혼도 있는 거지요), 지금까지 단순한 미친년으로 취급하며 방심한 댓가를 치른 거지요. 이렇듯, '그것에 대해 (정확히) 알지 못한다'는 인지적 제약이 극의 진행에 미치는 영향은 생각보다 지대합니다.

"사람들은 집에서 키우는 소,닭,돼지, 금붕어도 먹지 않느냐") 그런 것들이 이유일 수 있다고 해도, 그 다음에는 '그렇다면 왜 하필 밍이 저주의 희생양이어야만 하나'라는 문제가 남고요. 즉, 이를 필연이라 보기에는 분명히 들어맞지 않는 구석이 없지 않습니다. 이는 나홍진 세계관의 근본 전제를 나타내는 부분이라 말할 수 있을거 같습니다. 곡성에서 그러하였듯이, 불운은 어떤 이유와 특정한 관심을 가지지 않고, 돌연 알 수 없이 들이닥칠 뿐인 것입니다.
4. 악에 홀린 존재가 주변 인물들에게 해악을 끼치는 전개 자체를 뻔하다고 한다면, 세상에 뻔하지 않을 영화가 얼마나 되겠나 싶습니다. 미스트의 괴물들도, 걔들이 뭔 일을 벌일지는 사실 뻔한거죠.
