https://new.redtea.kr/?b=38&n=87052 쓸려다 다 정리를 못하고 있다 결국 까먹은 이야기였는데, 타임라인에서 우연히 비슷한 글타래를 만나 다 완성되지 못했어도 일단 풀어 놓아 봅니다. 아주 과거의 디아블로 3가 출시될 때의 이야기입니다. 2011년 디아블로 3 런칭 전에 블리자드의 구상은 디아블로 3에 [현금경매장]을 도입하는 것이었습니다. http://www.inven.co.kr/webzine/news/?news=37552&site=diablo3 말 그대로입니다. 아이템을 [현금]으로 결제하는 것입니다. 무려 [현금경매장]입니다. 게임에 경매장을 도입하는 것이 처음은 아니고, 당연히 다중이용 온라인 역할분담 게임[MMORPG]에서는 당시도 흔한 것이었습니다. 04년 출시된 와우에도 경매장은 있죠. 그렇지만 이 경매장은 엄연한 게임 내 컨텐츠로써 오직 게임 내 재화로만 결제가 가능하였습니다. 또한 본인들이 고안한 귀속 시스템에 의해 정말 좋은 아이템은 획득 시 바로 귀속됨으로써 경매장에서 거래되는 아이템은 대부분 소모품이나 차상위 등급 아이템에 그쳤습니다. 그렇지만 디아블로 3는 다릅니다! 디아블로의 전설 아이템은 진짜 현실에서 돈 받고 팔 수 있는 가치를 지닙니다!! 당시 발표로는 후덜덜한 아이디어였습니다. 과거 디아 2 유저들은 누가 땡전 한 푼 주지 않음에도 메피스토만 몇 천번 몇 만번 반복하여 잡아대었으며 오직 화폐로 사용할 요량으로 조던, 독참 한 인벤 가득 채우고도 모자라 했었죠. 이런 열정의 불길에 현실적인 이익의 기름을 붓는다면 대체 얼마만한 대화재가 일어날까요? 집행검인가가 몇 억 한다 했었죠? 최상옵 윈드포스 가격은 얼마 할까요? 할배검 가격은 얼마 할까요? 집행검의 가격이 5억이라 하고, 실제로 5억의 거래가 일어난다고 하더라도 사실 NC는 그 거래에서 전혀 이득을 얻지 못합니다. 경매장을 통해 이루어질 경우에나 약간의 게임머니 회수가 가능할 뿐일거에요. 그렇지만 블리자드가 설계한 현금경매장은 이러한 거래가 이루어지면 블리자드가 수수료로써 실질적인 이득을 얻도록 합니다. http://www.inven.co.kr/board/diablo3/2974/186 이것이 정착되었다면 한국 게임사를 능가할 블리자드의 엄청난 캐쉬 카우가 될 수 있을 지도 몰랐었겠네요. 당연히 모두들 [이제 정말 가능한 건가?]라는 의심을 품었지만 그 당시의 블리자드는 내놓는 것들 마다 항상 게임계에 새로운 개념과 혁신을 불러왔고 엄청난 성공을 거두어 왔기에 [블리자드라면 혹시?]라고 생각할 수 있었습니다. 문제는 법률이었습니다. 나라마다 게임 내 현금경매장을 용인하는 국가가 있을 수 있고 심의상 안 된다 하는 국가가 있을 수 있었죠. https://zdnet.co.kr/view/?no=20110801160601 아쉽게도 국내에서는 도입되지 못했었습니다. https://news.joins.com/article/8074040 그렇지만 외국에서는 한 때 이렇게 수익을 올렸던 사람도 있었죠. https://www.thisisgame.com/webzine/nboard/4/?n=35863 그러나 현재의 디아블로에서는 경매장이 사라진 지 오래되었고, 아직도 디아3를 플레이하는 유저는 간간히 보이나 경매장은 흔적조차 찾을 수가 없습니다. 폭망했다는 거죠. 왜 이렇게 되었을까요? 블리자드는 현금경매장을 기반으로 하여 디아블로 3의 경제를 다음과 같이 설계하였습니다. 1. 좋거나 희귀한 아이템은 엄청나게 드롭률이 낮았습니다.  2. 좋은 아이템에 대한 수요가 생길 수 있도록 최상위 난이도(당시로는 불지옥)는 몬스터들을 어마어마하게 강하게 만들었습니다.  3. 유저의 게임내 화폐 획득(골드)을 크게 제한하였습니다.  각각 다 이유는 있었습니다. 전설 아이템이 가치를 지니려면 당연히 희귀해야 하겠죠. 아무나 가지고 있는 아이템에 귀중한 현실 화폐를 내놓을 사람은 없습니다. 2번도 마찬가지입니다. 굳이 좋은 전설의 무구를 장착하지 않고서도 최상위 컨텐츠를 클리어 하는 게 가능하다면 굳이 비싼 전설의 아이템에 수요가 생길 수 없죠. 3번은 재화 대신 시간을 투자하는 유저의 전략, 즉 끝까지 운이 좋지 않아 득템을 하지 못하더라도 꾸준히 게임내 재화를 모아 게임 내 재화로써 결제를 해결하는 것을 틀어막고, 현실 화폐를 게임 결제로 끌어오기 위한 안배였다고 해석됩니다. 그런데 이런 설계 이후로 게임이 흘러간 모양새를 보면, 아마도 게임사에서 의도한 방향과 어느 정도는 일치하면서도 이게 맞나 싶게 어긋난 흔적이 보입니다. 우선 정상적으로 플레이하면 적들의 스펙 상승이 플레이어의 스펙 상승을 한참 웃돌기에 한 노멀 - 악몽 - 지옥 - 불지옥의 난이도 중 대강 악몽 후반, 지옥 초반 정도 되면 적들이 너무 강해져서 도저히 제대로 진행을 못할 정도가 됩니다. 특히나 야만전사, 수도사 이 2종의 근접클래스의 문제가 심각했는데, 이 직업들은 적에서 근접해서 피해를 견디면서 싸우는 것을 전제로 설계되었는데, 아무리 모든 자원을 방어로 돌려고 컨트롤을 하니 마니 해도 특수능력까지 달고 십수 마리씩 달려드는 적들의 공격을 버틸 수가 없었기 때문입니다. 마법사, 부두술사 같은 원거리 클래스는 약간 상황이 나았지만 이런 게임 특성상 적들의 이동속도가 플레이어보다 한참 빠르기 때문에 적이 나에게 도달할 때까지 녹이지 못하면 한방에 눕게 되니 불안정하기는 마찬가지였습니다. 유일하게 상황이 [약간] 나았던 건 악마사냥꾼이었는데, 이는 캐릭 컨셉상 이동기가 뛰어나고 기술 중에 연막이었나 [2초 무적]을 보장하던 스킬이 있었기 때문입니다. 아주 당연하게 더욱 어려운 난이도에서 더 좋은 품질의 아이템이 떨어지는데 대강 돌아가는 것을 보면 원거리 클래스가 악몽 초반을 진행하기 위해선 악몽 후반 ~ 지옥 초반의 템이 필요했고 근거리 클래스가 악몽 초반을 진행하기 위해선 지옥 초반 ~ 지옥 후반의 템이 필요하다고 생각되었습니다. 아마도 먼저 고스펙을 갖춘 이들이 자신에게 필요 없는 아이템을 경매장에 올리면 후발주자는 그걸 현금으로 구매하는 그림을 그리지 않았나 생각됩니다. 문제는 캐릭터별로 성능에 너무 차이가 심했고 불지옥 템은 템과 컨트롤을 함께 갖춘 소수의 선택받은 악마사냥꾼만이 수급하여 경매장에 내 놓을 수 있던 것 같습니다. 수량이 적든 많았든 어쨌건 공급은 되었습니다. 진행이 막힌 사람들이 아우성치니 수요도 있는 겁니다. 그런데 [수요할 능력]이 있는 가는 또 다른 문제입니다. 앞서 언급한 3번 때문에, 아무리 폐지를 주워서 팔아도 필요로 하는 자산.... 내 캐릭터에 맞는 아이템은 너무나 비쌌습니다. 게다가 이런 류의 게임이면 어김없이 창궐하는 오토, 매크로 유저들은 골드 인플레를 일으켜 애써 플레이하여 벌어 놓은 게임 내 골드의 가치를 똥값으로 만들어 버렸습니다. 결국 내가 더 다음 단계로 진행하기 위해서 필요한 아이템의 구매 비용은 100골드인데 내가 일주일, 한 달 동안 죽어라 사냥해서 번 돈은 60골드 밖에 안 되고, 도저히 지겨워서 더 이상 노가다는 못하겠다. 그렇지만 꼭 다음 단계를 플레이하고 싶다면 나머지 모자란 40은 지갑에서 카드를 꺼내어 현금으로 결제하는 수밖에 없을 겁니다. 운이 좋다면 다시 자신에게 필요 없어진 아이템을 자신도 경매장에 올려 그 비용의 일부를 회수할 수 있을 지 모르고, 그렇게 디아블로 현금경매장으로 흘러 들어온 돈은 다시 돌고 돌아 게임 내 경제를 순환시킬 수 있을 지도 모릅니다. 모바일 게임에서는 흔하디 흔한 BM입니다. 그런데, 게임 내 재화 60대 신용카드 결제 40이 아니라, 40대 60이라면? 점점 더 게임 내에서 얻어 충당할 수 있는 건 적어지고 필요한 재화의 값은 비싸져서 2대 98쯤 된다면? 필요한 아이템을 얻기 위해 게임을 열심히 플레이 하는 것이 의미가 있을까요? 이에 더해 패치 한 번, 버그 수정 한 번 할 때마다, 그리고 유저들의 전략 발견에 따라 이리 출렁이고 저리 출렁이는 경매장 아이템 값을 보면서 유저들은 갈 수록 이런 생각을 하게 됩니다. [내가 죽어라 사냥하고 잡템 모아서 팔아봤자 푼돈 밖에 안 되지 않나. 차라리 경매장만 잘 쳐다보다가 싼 템 올라오면 사고 비싸게 팔아서 차익을 노리는 것이 훨씬 나은 결과가 나오는 것이 아닐까?] 점점 더 사냥꾼에서 장사꾼으로 업종변경하는 유저들의 수가 많아지고, 거래는 활발해지고 아이템 가격은 하늘 높은 줄 모르고 솟구쳐 오릅니다. 또한 현실에서도 그렇듯 장사라는 것이 항상 이익을 볼 때만이 있는 것이 아닙니다. 크게 번 사람 만큼 크게 잃은 사람도 있을 것이고, 이런 사람들은 소리소문 없이 게임을 떠날 뿐입니다. 오직 항상 버는 것은 리얼 사업장인 오토 작업장 정도일 뿐이었겠지요. 대강 디아블로 3 노말 4막까지 클리어가 초기에는 아무리 길어도 5시간을 넘지 않았던 것으로 기억합니다. 자력으로 안정적이고 덜 스트레스 받고 성장할 수 있는 건 악몽 초반부 까지이니 게임을 사서 플레이 한 후 6~7시간이 지나면 단순히 아이템이 모잘라서 추가 결제를 해야 하거나 24시간 눈이 빠개지도록 경매장을 쳐다 보아야 합니다. 시원하게 추악하고 강력한 악마들을 썰고 썰고 또 썰어제끼는 핵앤 슬래쉬 게임을 기대하였는데 어느 새 썰리는 것은 나였고 이런 상황을 극복하려면 큰 대가(현금)을 지불하거나 너무 지루하고 오랜 시간이 걸리게 되었습니다. 이론상 돈을 모으고 모아서 하나씩 하나씩 아이템을 여러 단계에 걸쳐 업그레이드 하면 불지옥 디아블로와 단신으로 맞서 이겨 세상을 궁극적으로 구할 네팔렘으로 인정받을 수 있을 지 모르지만 그럴려면 너무 내가 시간당 획득할 수 있는 자원이 똥값이라 그게 얼마나 걸릴 지 알 수가 없네요. 1년? 2년? 10년? 한 게임에 인생을 그렇게 투자할 수는 없습니다. 때문에 게임 역사상 손꼽을만한 대형 기대작 디아블로 3의 평가는 출시한 이후부터 쭈~욱 그저 악화일로만을 걷습니다. 이 문제는 궁극적으로 경매장을 폐쇄하고, 아이템을 개인에게 귀속시키되 좀 더 그 개인에게 필요한 아이템만이 드롭되게 하여 다른 플레이어나 경매장에서 아이템을 조달할 필요를 낮추고, 좀 더 게임의 난이도를 세부화하여 악몽을 도는데 악몽 이상급 아이템이 필요한 상황을 해소하는 방향으로 게임을 리빌드하는 2.0 확장팩 전 패치에서 해결하게 됩니다. https://m.inven.co.kr/webzine/wznews.php?site=diablo3&p=22&idx=63805 그러나 이것을 엄밀한 의미에서 해결이라고 말할 수 있는 지는 잘 모르겠네요. 많은 시간이 흐른 지금에는 이 때의 2.0 패치를 게임을 살린 신의 한수였다는 평이 대세인 건 맞는데, 현금경매장 폐쇄 이전의 디아 3는 PVP와 전투정보실을 도입하는 등 MMORPG化와 그에 따른 수익모델을 추구하고 있었습니다. 그런데 이런 방향의 게임 패치는 결국 도로 디아 1 시절의 1인 패키지 게임으로 돌아가겠다는 것이고, 이건 문제의 해결이라기 보다는 문제의 해결을 포기하기로 결정이라고 보는 것이 맞지 않나 싶습니다. 때로는 빠른 손절 역시 신의 한수될 수 있는 것은 부정할 수 없는 사실이죠. 이미 10년이 가깝게 지나 기억도 흐릿흐릿하고 자료도 얼마 남아 있지 않은 디아블로 3에 대한 이야기를 지금에 와서 왜 꺼내게 되었는가 하면 디아블로 2 리마스터의 출시가 올해 9월 24일로 확정되었고, 디아블로 M(이모탈)이 클로즈 알파 테스트 수행중이며, 디아블로 4가 역시 출시 확정으로 디아블로 IP의 작품들이 줄줄이 예정되어 있기 때문만은 아닙니다. 경매장에 올라온 6~7억 짜리 무기를 보고 침만 줄줄 흘리다 게임을 종료하던 9~10년 전 저의 모습이나 현재 6~7억 짜리 아파트를 보고 한숨만 푹푹 쉬다 크롬을 꺼버리는 저의 모습이 크게 달라지지 않았기 때문이고, 한 때는 꿈과 희망을 가지고 열심히 잡템도 소중히 모아 팔고 원화채굴을 하러 다녔지만 이제 지금은 지쳤고 힘을 내보려 해도 도저히 계산이 안 나온다는 것도 마찬가지이기 때문입니다. 문득 기시감을 느껴 과거에서 배우려 했으나 다 역시 엎는 거 외에는 도저히 답이 없었던 문제였었다는 것만 확인하게 되었네요. 보상과 경제 시스템에 있어서 디아블로 M 이모탈과 디아블로 2 레저젝션은 각각 일반적인 모바일게임 과금체계와 독립된 싱글 게임의 선례를 따를 것으로 예상되는 바가 있습니다. 그렇지만 디아블로 4의 시스템은 아치 에너미와 스킬 트리 구성이 공개 된 것 외에는 실제 플레이어들이 어떤 처지에서 게임을 꾸려 나가게 될련지는 미정이네요. 생각없이 텔포소서 데리고 무한정 메피 잡으러 다닐 수 있었던 학생 시기와 다르게 지금은 자신의 생활에 스스로 책임을 지고, 현재의 책임과 미래 설계를 비롯한 자기 책무를 완수한 후에야 제대로 게임을 할 수 있는 몸이 되었습니다. 억지로 게임 켜봤자 도피에 불과하고 마음은 불안하기만 합니다. 사고 싶은 것, 사야 할 것이 있는데, 그러기에 제 능력이 너무 부족하다는 것은 게임 내에서나 밖에서나 여전히 저를 괴롭히네요. 이게 단순히 저만 그런 것이 아니라 모두들 그렇고 그 때문에 허덕인다는 사실을 위로로 삼아야 할지 문제로 삼아야할지 모르겠습니다.
