미국리버럴들에게 교과서처럼 공유되고 있는 반인종차별 윤리관이 있습니다. 한 스타벅스 직원의 인종차별적인 행태 때문에 대중이 분노하면, 스타벅스가 사과하며 전직원들에게 반인종차별에 대한 교육을 시키겠다고 하잖아요. 그때 직원들에게 시청을 권하는 영상이 바로 이브람 켄디(Ibram X. Kendy)의 반인종차별에 관한 이 테드영상이에요. 한국어로 번역이 잘 되어 있네요. 그의 반인종차별주의 개념은 인간의 본능적인 차별욕구까지 끌어내 속죄하게 만드는 아주 기막하게 훌륭한 비판이에요. 치명적인 흠결도 있습니다. 뉴욕에서 개줄 없이 공원을 다니던 백인여성이, 개에게 목줄을 채울 줄 것을 정중하게 요구한 흑인 남성에게 비명을 지르며, 그 자리에서 경찰에 연락해 생명의 위협을 느끼니 당장 와 달라고 한 사건 기억하시나요. 백인여성은 그 후 티비에 출연해 사과를 하면서 'I am not a racist' 라고 합니다. 그녀는 놀랍게도 민주당지지자이기도 하죠. 이브람 켄디에 의하면 인종차별의 존재를 부정하는 사람은 비인종차별주의자이고 인종차별을 고백하는 사람은 반인종차별주의자입니다. 인종차별행위를 한 번도 한 적이 없어도 마음 속으로, 한 인종은 다른 인종보다 우월/열등하다고 생각하거나 흑인들은 백인들보다 위험하다는 편견 등을 (무의식적으로) 내재화하고 살면 비인종차별주의자입니다. 흑인인구(13.4%)가 얼마 되지도 않는데 미국 전체 수감자의 40%가 흑인이라는 사실을 두고 정책에 문제가 있다고 못 느끼면 비인종차별주의자인 거죠. 인종에 문제가 없음에도 불구하고 인종 간에 불평등한 결과가 매우 역력할 때 우리 사회가 어떤 문제가 있기에 이런가라고 생각할 줄 모르면 비인종차별주의자입니다. 이브람 켄디에 의하면 비인종차별주의자는 그냥 중립적인 입장이 아니고 현실을 부정하는 '인종차별주의자'입니다. 반인종차별주의자는 아이러니하게도 자신이 인종차별주의자임을 고백하고 차별구조를 바꾸기 위해 노력하는 사람이에요. 속죄를 강요하는 것 같아 이념이 보수적인 사람들의 미움을 많이 사고 있어요. 치명적인 흠결은 바로 그가 [Antiracist Baby]라는 동화책까지 써서 아무것도 모르는 아이들한테 다짜고짜 백인아이에게는 가해에 대한 속죄를 가르치고 흑인아이에게는 피해자성을 가르친다는 겁니다 -.- 이러니 백래시가 온다는... 여튼 이브람 켄디의 영상이 굉장히 인상적이었던 건 제 마음을 꿰뚫는 것 같았기 때문이에요. 제가 아무리 정치적으로 러버럴이고 흑인커뮤니티를 구제하기 위해 계급을 고려한 정책이든, 인종을 고려한 정책이든 특단의 조치가 필요하다고 생각하는 사람이라지만 속으로는 늘, 왜 흑인 커뮤니티는 저럴까라고 생각을 했었어요. 한 예로 미국에서 흑인미용사업을 독점적으로 쥐고 있는 건 한국인들이에요. 한국인들끼리 도매권을 꽉 쥐고 타인종 비즈니스인들에게는 배타적으로 거래를 하기 때문에 흑인들이 끼어들 여지가 없어요. 압도적인 숫자의 흑인들이 누리는 헤어문화를 한국인이 아니고서는 제대로 누리지도 못하고 사는 흑인들의 무력함이 저는 이해가 안 갔어요. 흑인들 없으면 한국인 소매점들 다 망할텐데 그들의 유니크한 문화가 타인종의 자본에 의해 잠식된 이 문제야말로 내가 불편을 감수하고서라도 다같이 연대해 흑인비즈니스를 집중적으로 살려보려 애쓸만한 일이지 않은가라고 생각했어요. 그리고 흑인멘토가 없어도 너무 없는 거예요. 즉 흑인들에게 문제가 있다라고 사고하는 것 때문에 스스로 나는 인종차별주의자가 아니다라고 장담을 하지 못합니다. 또 막상 [Time]지에서 흑인과 아시안 활동가들이 연대해서 반아시안혐오/BLM캠페인을 벌이는데 한 아시안 활동가 왈, 아시안들이 백인우월주의에 영합하고 산 죄도 있다고 말하는 걸 보니 '그래 나도 공범이야'란 생각이 들기는 커녕 버럭 역정이 났어요. 앞서 언급했듯 이브람 켄디가 말하는 반인종차별주의자는 속죄하는 인종차별주의자입니다. 속죄까지는 안 되는 제가 스스로 나는 '비'인종차별주의자인 것 같다고 느끼는 이유는 또 있어요. 흑인커뮤니티의 문제를 목도할 때마다 저게 다 유구하게 시스템의 억압에 시달려서 그런 거야하고 답하는데 스스로 일단 흑인들을 무조건 불쌍하고 무기력한 존재로 상정하고 시혜적인 시선으로 보는 걸 느껴요. 이 오묘하게 차별적인 시선이 위선이라는 생각을 합니다. 그런데 이브람 켄디는 이런 시혜적인 시선에 대해서는 뭐라고 말을 안 해요. 리버럴의 시혜적인 시선을 비판하는 건 흑인보수입니다. 흑인보수의 아버지는 Thomas Sewall이라고 볼 수 있는데 토마스 피케티의 [21세기 자본론]을 부정하고, 개인이나 그룹의 결과는 저마다 다를 수밖에 없으며, 개인의 의지를 구조의 문제에 앞서 사고하는 정통보수예요. 그의 영향을 받은 흑인보수가 바로 Shelby Steele이고 그는 아들과 함께 [What Killed Michael Brown?]이라는 다큐를 완성한 학자입니다. 이 영화는 아마존이 프라임상영을 거부했다가 겨우 허가를 내 준 논란의 영화예요. 아래에 설명이 나올 겁니다. Shelby Steele은 현 브라운대학 교수인 Glenn Loury와 콜럼비아대 교수인 John McWhorty에게 영향을 끼쳤고 John McWhorty는 현재 25세의 떠오르는 흑인담론가 Coleman Hughes에게 영향을 끼칩니다. 원조 Thomas Sewall과 Shelby Steele은 뺄 것 하나 없는 정통보수이고 세대를 내려올수록 리버럴해져서 John McWhorty는 중도리버럴이며 가장 젊은 Coleman Hughes는 리버럴 래셔널리스트입니다. Shelby Steele은 흑백분리가 제도적으로 공고했던 시절을 나서 그 기억이 생생한데 지금은 구조적인 인종차별이란 없다고 주장합니다. 흑인들은 자유가 주어졌을 때, 자유를 다루는 수고 또한 힘든 과정임을 깨닫고 책임지는 커뮤니티를 형성했어야 하는데 그러지 못했으며 대신 가상의 억압을 만들어 그곳에 안주한다고 말합니다. 그동안 억압의 역사가 워낙에 길었으므로 이해가 안 되는 건 아니지만 주변을 돌아봐도 제대로 길을 터주는 흑인리더도 없고 정부에다 대고 계속 달라고만 한다고 합니다. 자유의 쓴맛이야말로 더 이상 억압을 변명으로 사용할 수 없는 거라고 합니다. 그리고 더하기를, 흑인들이 피해자성에 안주해서 자기발전을 게을리하는 데 백인리버럴들이 크게 한몫했다고 말해요. 백인들이 죄의식때문에 흑인의 일방적인 피해자성에 꾸준히 공조하고 있는데 그건 정말 속죄하는 마음이 있어서가 아니라 스스로 마음의 부담에서 벗어나 해방되기 위함일 뿐이라고 지적하죠. 현재의 시민운동은 과거 흑인들의 경이로웠던 시민운동과는 달리 현실에 눈감고 퍼포먼스에 열중하는 거라고 비판합니다. 흑인은 자신들의 피해자성을 가장 강력한 파워로 삼고 있기 때문에 진실과 거짓이 뒤범벅이 되어도 동력을 위해 수정을 않고 가짜를 지속한다고 하죠. 이 얘기는 백인경찰에 의해 사망한 흑인 마이클 브라운에 관한 영화얘기를 하면서 나왔는데 마이클 브라운의 친구가 리버럴미디어에서 마이클이 두 손을 들고 쏘지 말라고 했는데 경찰이 쐈다고 증언을 하는 바람에 대중의 분노를 순식간에 불러 일으켰었습니다. 처음에는 친구? 아니면 다른 목격자가 경찰이 등 뒤에서 쐈다고도 했어요. 조사 결과 모두 앞에서 쏜 것이었고 또 다른 목격자에 의하면 두 손을 든 적은 없었으며 마이클이 차 안에 있던 경찰의 총을 뺏으려고 시도했다가(차 안에서 마이클의 혈흔을 발견) '꼴에 니가 날 쏠 수는 있냐?' 라는 말을 던지고 - 경찰에 의하면 - 차에서 벗어나서는 다가 오지 말라는 명령에도 아랑곳 않고 경찰에게 다가가다가 두 발을 먼저 맞고 전진을 계속, 또 수발을 다다다다 맞아 사망하게 된 사건이에요. 이 사건은 결국 경찰의 증언이 목격자들의 진술과 포렌식조사로 확인이 되었지만 그럼에도 불구하고 대중에게는 총 두 발을 맞고도 계속 전진했다는 사실이 이해가 안 가고 아무리 그래도 여섯발씩이나 쏴서 사람을 죽이냐는 한탄이 씁쓸하게 남아 있지요. 그렇지만 미국은 범죄율이 예사롭지가 않은 나라라서 보통 경찰말만 잘 들으면 안 일어날 일이었다는 냉철한 사고도 적지 않습니다. 당시 공영라디오방송 NPR의 경우 마이클의 친구를 초대해 조사결과랑 하나도 안 맞는 증언을 얼렁뚱땅 다 들려줘서 비난을 받았고 후에 경찰의 증언에 부합하는 진술을 한 목격자들은 두려움때문에 대중 앞에 나서지는 않았습니다. 각설하고, Shelby Steele은 그동안 백인리버럴이 흑인들에 대한 죄의식에서 벗어나기 위해 각종 사회보장제도를 실현해왔지만 흑인커뮤니티는 내부적인 발전을 끌어내는 데 실패해서 피해자성에 연명하고 있는 판국이고 이걸 계속 우쭈쭈해주는 백인리버럴은 흑인들을 오히려 망치는 주범이기도 하다고 합니다. Shelby Steele에 의하면 1940년대와 1950년대의 흑인은 서서히 중산층으로 접어드는, 발전하는 모습을 보여주다가 시민운동의 결과 갑작스러운 자유를 누리면서부터 현재까지 서서히 후퇴했다고 말합니다. 후퇴한 이유는, 백인의 억압을 주범으로 지목하니 억압자인 백인이 흑인을 해방시켜줘야 하는, 즉 흑인구제는 백인의 손에 달려있는 모양이 돼 버려서 거기에 안주한 흑인은 주체성을 잃는다는 겁니다. 모든 걸 백인들 손에 맡겨 놓고 백인들끼리 소수자우대정책을 펴니 마니, 지금은 경찰개혁을 하니 마니 머리 쥐어 뜯어면서 도덕심으로 샤워하는 동안에, 흑인은 정의와 부정의라는 추상적인 개념을 가지고 와서 문제의 요인을 외부에서만 찾다가 정작 흑인커뮤니티 안에서는 내 삶과 밀접한 교육과 가정은 엉망, 압도적인 다수의 아이들이 롤모델로서의 아버지가 없이 자라고 있는 등의 기본적이고 치명적인 삶의 고충들이 산재한 채로 난 피해자요라는 입장만 고수한다는 얘기죠. 왜 헝그리정신으로 무장해서 부상하지 않냐 이 말이죠. 이런 발언은 흑인들 사이에서도 금기어같이 여겨집니다. 보수와 리버럴을 정신없이 왔다갔다 하는 Glenn Loury는 여태껏 백인경찰에 의해 죽임을 당한 흑인들이 결백하고 선량한 시민들이 아니고 범죄자에 동네깡패라는 사실을 두고 리버럴들이 겉으로는 정의를 외쳐도 맘속으로 욕 안 할 것 같냐고 통탄을 합니다. 경찰에 협조하기만 하면 다 살았을 생명들이라면서요. 다들 눈치만 보고 이 말을 해주는 어른이 아무도 없다고 침을 튀기며 열변을 터뜨리죠. 중도리버럴인 John McWhorty는 Glenn Loury보다는 훨씬 정제된 이야기를 하고 더 후세대인 Coleman Hughes 또한 훨씬 유려한 화술로 리버럴다운 진면목을 잃지 않으면서 흑인커뮤니티의 systemic culture에 대해 단 한마디도 꺼낼 수 없었던 자신의 모습을 상기하며 조심스럽게 흑인들이 더 나은 삶을 살기 위해 이루어져야하는 담론에 대해 진지하게 고민합니다. 흑인보수의 입장에 대한 설명이 길었는데 영상 하나로 보여주면 이런 거예요. https://youtu.be/OLdkyLjyUmQ 영상의 흑인젊은이는 다른 영상을 보아 하니 공화당지지자인 듯합니다. 한국의 경우 정상가정 하면 한부모가정, 결혼하지 못하는 성소수자, 이민자가정 등의 억압이 연상돼 정상가정 이데올로기가 지탄받는 반면에, 흑인커뮤니티는 75%가 한부모가정 집안이라 정상가정 이데올로기가 장려되어야 유익합니다. 다른 영상에서는 정상가정의 중요성을 강조했고 이 영상에서는 흑인랩문화의 위험성에 대해 경고합니다. 저는 흑인랩을 전혀 안 들어서 잘 몰랐는데 영상을 보다보니 갱단, 마약, 총기소유를 쿨하고 멋진 것으로 소화하는 저런 문화에 한국인 아이들이 노출되는 게 상상이 안 되네요. 어떤 영상에서는 흑인영어를 구사하지 않는다고 acting white이라고 놀리는 문화를 비판합니다. 자신은 부끄럼을 타는 똑똑한 아이였고 싸움이나 드라마는 질색이었다고 유년시절을 상기하죠. 흑인들은 압도적인 90%가 바이든을 선택했지만 사실 2016년보다 2020년에 흑인젊은이의 트럼프지지세가 증가한 결과를 보였습니다. 트럼프가 그랬죠. 당신들 동네를 안전하게 만들어 주겠다. 백인들이나 다른 인종들은 몰라도 이렇듯 공화당을 지지하는 아주 소수의 흑인들은 저로 하여금 흑인커뮤니티에 대한 시혜적인 시선을 거두게 하는 긍정적인 면들을 가지고 있습니다.
