1976년 푸코는 그의 마지막 저작, 『성의 역사』 1권, 『지식의 의지』 서문에서 이미 차후의 계획을 다음과 같이 밝혀두었다. ⓶ 육체와 신체, ⓷ 소년 십자군, ⓸ 여성, 어머니, 히스테리 환자, ⓹ 성도착자들, ⓺ 인구와 종족 등이 그것이다. 그러나 푸코는 이 계획을 지키지 못한다. 무슨 이유에서인지는 알 수 없지만, 1984년 5월, 『성의 역사』 2권은 『쾌락의 활용』이라는 이름으로 출판되었다. 그리고 바로 3권 『자기에의 배려』도 세상에 나왔으며, 며칠 후 푸코는 세상을 뜨고 만다. 사실, 자신의 모든 글에 대한 사후출판을 원하지 않는다는 유언을 남겼기에 푸코의 새로운 책이 세상에 나타날 가능성은 거의 없었다. 더불어 푸코는 왜 말년에 갑작스레 연구주제를 바꾼 것인지 영원히 수수께끼로 남을 판이었다. 그러던 중 2018년, 푸코의 미완성 원고를 바탕으로 한 4권 『육체의 고백』이 프랑스에서 출판되었다. (한글 번역은 2019년) 편집자에 의해 알려진 바로는 『육체의 고백』의 경우, 그가 자기 유언의 예외라고 말했다는 것이다. 이 책은 2, 3권을 쓰기 전에 이미 출판사에 초고를 넘긴 상태였다. 다시 말하자면, 2, 3권을 쓰게 된 이유가 바로 이 4권 『육체의 고백』 때문이라는 것이다. 이 책의 편집자이자, 유명한 푸코 연구자인 그로는 서문에서 이 책이 어떠한 이유와 방식으로 편집됐는지 자세히 설명하고 있다. 푸코는 근대를 사유한 사상가였다. 『광기의 역사』, 『감시와 처벌』, 『지식의 고고학』 등, 그의 저작 대부분은 근대 이후를 다루고 있다. 근대에 정신 의학이 어떻게 광기와 정상을 규정했는가라는 문제부터 지식과 권력이 어떻게 결탁하고 어떻게 사람들을 억압했는지에 대해서 말하고 있다. 그래서 『성의 역사』 2권이 출간되었을 당시, 낯선 푸코의 모습에 사람들이 놀란 것도 사실이다. 갑자기 고대라니. 그때까지 그가 단 한 번도 궁금해 본 적 없었던 고대에 대한 계보학이라니. 『성의 역사』의 청사진에서 알 수 있듯이, 원래 기획의 목표는 프로이트였던 것으로 보인다. 성적 욕망이 왜 작금의 방식으로 다루어지는가라는 문제에 있어서, 그것의 억압기제가 어디서부터 온 것인지 궁금했었던 그는 근대를 넘어 중세의 기독교 윤리에서 그 뿌리를 찾게 된다. 그리고 초기 기독교의 윤리를 좇아가던 중 그것이 스토아 철학에 기반을 두고 있음을 발견하게 된다. 차라리 기독교의 윤리에서 그쳤다면 뭔가 말이 되면서도 충분하게 설명하며 멈출 수도 있었을 텐데, 푸코는 그러지 않았다. 이 『육체의 고백』의 원고를 쓰면서 계속 등장하게 되는 윤리의 기반, 스토아 철학에 대해서 좇아가보지 않을 수 없었다. 자신을 계보학자라 칭했던 그로서는 멈출 수 없었을 것이다. 그 연구의 흔적은 꼴레주 드 프랑스에서의 강의록 『주체의 해석학』, 『자기 통치와 타자 통치』, 『진실에의 용기』, 그리고 『성의 역사』 2, 3권에 남아 있다. 정리하자면, 푸코는 76년 『성의 역사』 1권을 출간한 이후 계속 다음 권의 출간을 미루고 있었다. 꼴레주 드 프랑스의 강의록을 보면, 주체성에 대한 강의가 80년부터 84년, 그가 죽을 때까지 이어지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 82년 가을 무렵 이 책의 원고는 거의 완성하여 출판사에 넘긴 상태였지만 출판은 미뤄달라고 요청한 상태였다. 그리고 원래 계획에 없었던 고대의 성 윤리를 다루는 2, 3권을 출간한 후 바로 세상을 뜨고 만다. 특히 84년 3월 그의 마지막 강의록을 살펴보면 그가 ‘파레시아’라는 것에 얼마나 천착하고 있었는가를 잘 알 수 있다. 이 책은 2~3세기의 초기 기독교 교부들의 저술을 바탕으로 ‘죄의 고백’과 당시 성윤리에 대해서 다루고 있다. 그가 기독교 성 윤리를 접하고 궁금했던 점은 종교 자체에 그것의 윤리를 규정한 것이 없음에도 불구하고 어떻게 이렇게 촘촘하고 정교한 윤리의 틀을 가지게 됐는가 였다. 2~3세기 초기 교부들에 의해 종교 그 자체로서 성 윤리를 가지고 있지 않던 기독교는 스토아 철학의 그것을 받아들이면서 윤리를 가지게 됐다는 것이다. 스토아 철학의 윤리는 ‘자기 구축’의 윤리학이었다. 그런데 이 ‘자기’라는 것이 아주 안정적이면서 굳건하게 있고, 그것은 변하지 않는 ‘나’를 규정하는 핵심적인 무엇을 말하는 것이 아니다. 여기서 말하는 ‘자기’는 만들어 가는 것이다. 하지만 기독교에서는 이 ‘자기’가 있어서는 안 된다. 구원을 받기 위해서 ‘자기’는 포기의 대상이어야 했다. 포기의 방법으로서의 윤리와 구축의 방법으로서의 윤리. 같은 것처럼 보이는 그 촘촘한 윤리가 사실 근본적인 부분에서 차이점을 가지고 있다는 말이다. 『육체의 고백』 는 3권 『자기에의 배려』에서 하지 못했던 이 말, 일견 비슷해 보이는 부분이 있더라도 ‘자기 배려’는 기독교의 ‘자기 포기’와는 구별되는 것이라는 걸 말한다. 아마 그에게 조금의 시간이 더 허락됐다면 아마 그러한 ‘자기 포기’의 매커니즘이 어떻게 프로이트에게까지 이어져 내려왔는가를 보여줬을 수도 있겠다는 생각을 해본다. 푸코는 죽는 순간까지 이 책의 원고를 수정했다. 죽음이 자신의 목을 조여 오는 것을 느끼며 마지막 저작을 완성해 나가는 그를 떠올려 본다. 그에게 죽음은 어떤 의미였을까? 아마 자신의 안에 남아 있는 나머지 말들을 세상에 풀어놓지 못하게 된 것에 대한 아쉬움은 아니었을까. 사후 35년도 더 지나서야 그의 마지막 책이 출판됐다. 비록 그가 생각했던 사상의 여정을 모두 보여주지는 못했지만, 그가 말년에 중요하게 여겼던 주제에 대해서 방점을 찍었다는 점에 의미를 둘 수 있을 것 같다. 마지막 순간까지 인간에 대한 궁금증을 놓지 않았던 학자의 영혼에 평안이 깃들기를. 메아리님의 과거 연작도 그렇고 이번 글에서도 주체의 구축을 푸코의 자기배려의 윤리에서 핵심이라 설명해주시는데, 전기 푸코가 주목했던 지식과 담론에 의한 주체의 일방적 생산과, 자기배려를 통한 그 극복 사이의 관계에 궁금한 점들이 있어요.
1) 푸코는 자기배려의 윤리를 모두에게 열려있는 실천으로 보나요? 아니면 특정한 사회적/문화적 조건에 따라서 누군가에게는 더 용이하게 열리고, 누군가에게는 더 어려운 실천으로 보나요?
예를 들자면 동질적인 사회집단에 더 접촉하기 쉬운 조건에 있는 사람과, 이질적인 사회집단에 더 접촉하기 쉬운 조건에 있는 사람들은 '대화'를 통해서 시험할 수 있는 상황의 가짓수가 또 다르지 않을까 싶거든요.
2) 자신을 어떻게 재구축하고 싶다는, 그 욕망은 진공상태에서 일어나는 건가요? 어떠한 내가 되고 싶다라는, 그러한 내가 되겠다라는 의지 또한 한 편으로는 지식과 담론에 의해서 그 상상력의 지도가 그어진 지점이 있는데, 사회학적 환원주의를(혹은 반대쪽 동전으로 심리학적 환원주의) 넘어서서 자기를 구축하고 싶어하는 주체를 제시할 수 있나요?
