 타이베이에 온 이래 나는 쭉 장춘로長春路 에 살았다. 이번 동네 이름 역시도 공교롭게도 인애동촌이었지만 난징 시절 살던 곳과는 아무런 접점이 없었다. 동네엔 대륙 사방팔방에서 이주해 온 사람들이 살았다. 하지만 난징 시절 알고 지내던 사람들은 뿔뿔히 흩어져 소식을 알 수 없었다. 다행히 평화로운 시대가 이어져 나도 무탈한 나날을 보냈다. 한편 공군 주최 문화행사가 오늘은 경극, 내일은 무용극 식으로 매번 색다른 맛을 선보이며 난징 시절만큼이나 풍성하게 열렸다. 나도 자주 구경 가서 흥겨운 분위기에 취하곤 했다. 어느 해 설날, 공군 신생사 (新生社 : 중화민국 공군 복리후생조직) 에서 신년 파티를 열었다. 들리는 말로는 예년보다 훨씬 대대적일거라 했다. 나는 표 두 장을 얻어 이웃 리씨댁 중학생 딸을 데리고 갔다. 우리가 신생사 회관 입구에 도착했을 때 파티가 시작된 지 꽤 지난 참이었다. 입장권으로 경품 추첨하는 곳에 사람들이 꽤 몰려있었지만, 홀 안쪽은 이미 춤곡이 울려 퍼지며 분위기가 달아오르고 있었다. 회관 전체가 발 디딜 틈 없이 북적였다. 대다수는 젊은 남녀들로 모두들 쾌활하게 웃고 즐겼다. 실내에 둥둥 떠다니는 빨간색 초록색 풍선들을 남색 군복 입은 젊은 공군들이 장난삼아 불붙은 담배로 건드려 터뜨렸다. 뻥뻥 소리 날 때마다 아가씨들이 펄쩍 뛰며 꺅꺅 비명을 내질렀다. 젊은 사람들 틈에 끼어 옴짝달싹을 못 하니 머리가 어질어질했다. 리씨댁 딸과 나는 간신히 회관 안쪽으로 들어와 기둥에 몸을 기대고 춤추는 사람들을 바라보았다. 파티에는 공군 군악대 사람들 스물 몇 명이 와서 연주했다. 여러 가수들도 하나하나 맵시 있게 차려입고 차례로 무대에 올라 유행가 몇 곡을 부르고 내려와 친한 장병들과 춤을 추었다. 악대 연주가 최고조에 이르자 요염하게 빼입은 한 여인이 나타났다. 무대 아래 사람들이 우레같은 박수와 환호를 보냈다. 등장하자마자 좌중을 사로잡은 여인은 무대에 올라 생긋 웃으며 능숙한 동작으로 마이크 높낮이를 조절하더니 뒤돌아 연주자들에게 고개를 까딱하는 신호를 보내고 노래 부르기 시작했다. "친 아주머니, 이 노래 제목이 뭐예요? " 리씨댁 딸이 물었다. 아이는 나만큼 유행가에 밝지 않았다. 나는 아침부터 잠들 때까지 라디오를 틀어놓고 살았다. "<동산일파청> 이야 " 아이에게 말해줬다. 나는 이 노래가 익숙했다. 라디오에서 귀에 못이 박히게 틀어주는 가수 바이꽝白光 의 노래였다. 무대 위 여인도 바이꽝 못지않게 교태가 뚝뚝 묻어나는 목소리였다. 한 손으론 마이크를 잡고 다른 한 손은 정성스레 틀어 올린 머리 위아래로 춤추듯 너울거리며 턱을 치켜들고 가사의 단어 하나하나를 또렷하게 불렀다. 동녘 산에 일파청 서녘 산에 일파청 그대 마음 가는 곳 나도 함께해요 그대여 우린 이제 한마음 한 몸 여인은 뒤로 살짝 몸을 기울인 채 하느작 하느작 움직이다 돌연 가슴 깊은 곳에서 끌어올린듯한 목소리로 절절하게 노래했다. 아이야야야야... 그대여 우린 이제 한마음 한 몸이에요.. 가사가 어느덧 신부가 시집 문턱 넘는 대목에 이르자 여인은 마이크를 내려놓고 한 연주자 손에서 망치처럼 생긴 타악기 채를 건네받아 뱅글뱅글 돌리며 무대 위에서 낭창낭창 룸바 스텝을 밟았다. 여인은 금색 스팽글이 달린, 반쯤 속이 비쳐 보이는 보랏빛 치파오를 입고 10cm 는 족히 될 하이힐을 신었다. 몸을 돌릴 때마다 옷에 달린 스팽글이 반짝반짝 빛났다. 노래를 마치자 무대 아래에서 갈채가 한참 동안 이어져 여인은 한 곡을 더 부르고 나서야 내려 올 수 있었다. 젊은 공군 장병 한 무리가 재빨리 다가가 무대에서 내려오는 그녀를 부축해서 안아 들곤 저쪽으로 가버렸다. 나는 몇 곡 더 듣고 싶었지만 리씨댁 딸이 경품 추첨하는 곳으로 가자고 졸랐다. 무대를 둘러싼 사람들을 헤치고 겨우 빠져나왔을 때 갑자기 뒤에서 누군가 어깨를 잡고선 말을 걸었다. "사모!" 고개를 돌려 보니 날 부른 이는 놀랍게도 방금 <동산일파청>을 부른 그 여인이었다. 타이베이에 온 후로 아무도 나를 <사모> 라고 부르지 않고 다들 친 부인이라 불렀다. 하도 오랜만이라 나는 순간 잘못 들었나 싶었다. "사모, 저 주칭이에요" 그 여인은 씩 웃으며 말했다. 나는 한참이나 말을 잇지 못하고 여인을 위아래로 살펴보았다. 공군 한무리가 우르르 몰려와 그녀를 에워싸고 같이 춤을 추자고 졸라댔다. 여인은 그들을 밀치곤 내게 다가와 귀엣말을 했다. "주소 좀 적어주세요. 사모. 모레 쯤 모시러 갈게요. 우리 집에서 같이 마작해요, 사모. 저 연습 많이 해서 이젠 꽤 고수랍니다 " 주칭은 생긋 미소와 함께 "사모, 저도 사모 얼굴 한참을 못알아봤어요" 라고 말하곤 몸을 돌려 가버렸다. 예전 관람했던 경극에 등장인물 오자서 伍子胥가 하룻밤 새 머리가 하얗게 새어버리는 대목이 나온다. 그땐 연극이니까 말이 되지 사람이 저리 못 알아볼 만치 변할 순 없지 않나 싶었다. 저녁에 집에 돌아와 세수를 하고 거울 앞에서 찬찬히 내 얼굴을 뜯어보니 그제서야 나 역시도 백발이 성성해진 게 눈에 들어왔다. 그래, 주칭이 날 못 알아본 것도 무리가 아니지. 이전에 피난 다닐 적, 살아남으려 발버둥 치느라 그 외의 것들은 아무것도 눈에 들어오지 않았다. 하이난다오 海南島 로 대피했을 때 웨이청은 병에 걸려 죽었다. 평생 하늘을 날며 사고 한번 당한 적 없던 사람이 배 위에서 병마에 시달리다 세상을 뜨다니, 기가 막혀 웃음이 나올 것 같았다. 남편은 이질에 걸려 속의 것을 모조리 쏟아내고 얼굴이 시커멓게 되었다. 배 안에 병자는 많고 약은 턱없이 모자랐다. 남편이 숨을 거두자마자 선원이 마대 자루를 벌려 다른 병사자들과 함께 집어넣고 바다에 던졌다. <풍덩> 소리와 함께 남편은 사라졌다. 웨이청에게 시집 온 날부터 나는 남편 시신을 거둘 마음의 준비가 되어 있었다. 남편 같은 사람은 나보다 명이 길 수 없다는 걸 알았으니까. 그렇지만 내 손으로 시신 수습조차 하지 못할 줄은 미처 몰랐다. 대만에 오고 나선 하루하루가 바빠서 대륙에서의 기억은 서서히 옅어져 갔다. 솔직히 말해, 신생사에서 맞닥뜨리지 않았다면 주칭을 떠올릴 일은 영영 없었으리라. 이틀 뒤 주칭은 와서 같이 저녁 먹자는 메모를 들려 택시를 보냈다. 알고보니 주칭은 신의로 4단에 위치한 공군 관사에 살고 있었다. 그날 저녁 주칭은 젊은 공군 총각 세 명을 더 초대했다. 근처 타오위안 기지에서 타이베이로 휴가 온 젊은이들 같았다. 그들도 주칭을 따라 나를 사모라 불렀다. 주칭은 호빵처럼 하얗고 통통한 얼굴에 키 작은 남자를 가르키며 말했다. "얘는 간잽이 류예요, 사모. 이따 마작하시면 아실 거예요. 간만보다가 본전도 다 까먹는다니까요" 류씨란 총각은 주칭한테 다가가 히죽히죽 웃었다. "누님, 오늘도 제가 뭐 실수한 것 있습니까? 말 한마디 다정하게 해주시질 않네" 주칭은 피식피식 웃을 뿐 대거리하지 않고 이어서 가무잡잡하고 마른 청년을 소개했다. "쟤는 좀생이 왕이에요. 담이 어찌나 작은지, 저랑 엄청 오랫동안 마작했는데 한 번도 변변한 패가 나온 적이 없다니까요. 어찌나 소심한지" 왕 씨 청년은 씨익 웃으며 말했다. "누님 말씀 너무 섭섭하게 하시면 큰코 다치실 겁니다. 저랑 류가 협공해서 탈탈 털어드리죠" 주칭은 흥, 하고 콧웃음을 치더니 말했다. "한입거리도 안되는 녀석들이 허세는. 두고 보라고, 이따 나 혼자 싹 쓸어줄테니" 주칭은 팔이 다 드러내는 민소매 원피스를 입었다. 어깨에 걸친 빨간 카디건 소맷자락이 움직일 때마다 너울거렸다. 주칭의 겉모습을 놀랄 만치 변해있었다. 몸매는 풍만한 가슴과 잘록한 허리가 멋진 곡선을 그렸고 얼굴에 세련된 화장이 더해져 민숭민숭했던 두 눈은 매혹적인 분위기를 뿜었다. 이어 주칭은 스무살쯤 되어보이는 샤오꾸 小顧 란 남자를 인사시켰다. 샤오꾸는 앞의 두 사람보다 점잖고 체격도 좋았다. 짙은 눈썹에 오뚝한 코에 앞서 두 사람처럼 가볍게 입을 놀리지 않고 진중했다. 주칭이 손님맞이를 하는 동안 샤오꾸는 주칭이 시키는 대로 탁자를 옮기는 등 몸 쓰는 일을 했다. 곧이어 자리에 둘러앉은 우리에게 주칭이 커다란 암탉을 통채로 푹 고아 김이 모락모락 나는 청증전계 清蒸全雞 를 호박색 항아리에 담아 내왔다. 주칭이 요리를 내려놓자 류 씨 총각이 샤오꾸 뒤로 가선 대놓고 이죽거렸다. 샤오꾸, 어서 많이 먹어라. 누님께서 네놈 몸보신하라고 잡은 닭 아닌가" 류 씨 총각과 왕 씨 총각이 동시에 킬킬대며 웃었다. 샤오꾸도 따라 웃었지만, 얼굴에 난감한 기색이 역력했다. 주칭은 찻상에서 군모를 집어 들어 류 씨 총각 머리를 찰싹 때렸다. 류 씨 총각은 머리를 팔로 감싸 안고 탁자 아래로 쏙 들어가 피했다. 왕 씨 총각은 국물을 한 숟가락 떠서 맛보더니 입술에 묻은 국물을 혀로 핥고선 감탄했다는 듯 말했다. "샤오꾸가 오니 과연 다르구먼, 누님께서 꿀을 팍팍 넣으셨나 벼. 국물맛이 아주 꿀맛이야." 주칭은 모자를 떨어뜨리고 배를 잡고 웃더니 두 사람을 향해 삿대질하며 앙칼지게 쏘아붙였다. "이 버르장머리 없는 놈들! 오냐오냐 받아줬더니 우습게 보고! 매를 아주 벌어요!" "우리 누님 손맛은 또 맵다니까" 두 남자가 킬킬거렸다. "느이들 오늘 사모가 있는 걸 다행으로 알아!" 주칭은 내 곁으로 와서 내 어깨에 두 손을 올리고 웃으며 말했다 "사모, 너무 언짢게 보시지 마세요. 마작하자고 불렀더니만 다들 허물없는 사이가 되놔서, 할 말 못 할 말 가리질 못하네요" 주칭은 류 씨 총각한테 손가락질하며 씩씩댔다. "이놈이 제일 밉상이라니까!" 주칭은 그대로 부엌으로 들어갔고 샤오꾸도 뒤따라가더니 주칭을 도와 요리를 들고나왔다. 식사 내내 류 씨와 왕 씨 두 젊은이와 주칭은 낯뜨거운 말을 주거니 받거니 했다. 그날부터 주칭은 1, 2주에 한 번씩 나를 집으로 초대했다. 하지만 몇 번을 봐도 옛날 일은 한 마디도 꺼내지 않았다. 우리는 만나서 그저 마작만 하기 바빴다. 주칭이 내게 말한 바에 따르면 샤오꾸는 다른 취미는 없고 오로지 마작 패에만 관심을 쏟았다. 샤오꾸가 휴가받아 타오위안에서 타이베이로 올 때마다 주칭은 마작 상대를 찾아주려고 사방을 돌아다녔다. 골목 입구에 있는 잡화점 일품향 주인 아주머니까지 주칭의 팔에 이끌려 왔다. 샤오꾸와 우리가 마작을 할 때 주칭은 판에 끼지 않고 샤오꾸 뒤에 의자를 가져와 앉아서 훈수를 두었다. 주칭은 다리를 꼬고 앉아 팔꿈치를 샤오꾸 어깨 위에 놓고선 <탄십성 歎十聲> 이니, <파황혼 怕黃昏> 이니 하는 오만가지 가요를 쉼 없이 흥얼거렸다. 마작판이 얼마나 오래가건 주칭은 끝날 때까지 계속 노래를 불렀다. "주칭, 노래는 언제 배웠니? " 한번은 궁금함을 참지 못하고 물었다. 말을 할 때도 늘 들릴 듯 말 듯 한 목소리였던 옛날 주칭이 새삼 떠올랐다. "대만에 처음 와서 취직할 데는 없고, 어쩌다 보니 공군 군악대에 들어가 몇 년 구르면서 익혔죠" 주칭은 까르르 웃었다. "친 부인, " 일품향 주인아주머니가 웃으며 말했다 "주칭 노래 실력 바이꽝 뺨치는 거 이 동네에서 모르는 사람 없다우" "아주머닌 또 비행기 태우시긴" 주칭이 말했다 " 빨리 다음 패나 생각하세요. 까딱하다 다 잃으시곤 또 밤새 두자고 하실라" 주칭과 재회한 지 서너 달 지났을 무렵, 하루는 신의로 동문시장에서 루웨이( 滷味, 즉석에서 고기, 야채, 두부, 면 등을 데쳐주는 요리) 를 사는데 마침 장 보러 온 일품향 주인아주머니를 마주쳤다. 아주머니는 나를 보자마자 팔을 잡아끌었다. "친부인, 들었어요? 주칭네 샤오꾸가 저번주 토요일에 사고가 났대요! 타오위안 비행장에서 이륙하자마자 몇 분 만에 추락했대" "아니요, 전혀 몰랐어요" 내가 말했다. 일품향 주인아주머니는 3륜 택시를 불러다 나와 함께 주칭을 살피러 갔다. 가는 길 내내 아주머니는 혼잣말처럼 장탄식했다. "어찌 이럴 수 있누? 그렇게 착실한 사람이 이렇게 갑자기 가버릴 수 있냐고. 샤오꾸 총각이 주칭네 드나든 지가 2년이 넘었어요. 주칭이 처음엔 우리한테 그냥 알고 지내는 동생이라 했는데, 왠걸, 보면 볼수록 보통 사이가 아닌 거야. 동네에 소문이 쫙 퍼졌지. 주칭은 연하 남자를 좋아한다더라, 특히 공군 신출내기를 맘에 들어 한다더라 하고 말이야. 주칭한테 뭐라 할 게 아니지, 샤오꾸같이 듬직한 총각을 또 어디가서 찾겠어? 가엾은 주칭! " 주칭네 집에 도착해서 초인종을 몇 번씩 눌렀지만, 문이 열리지 않았다. 그러다 별안간 주칭이 창 안쪽에서 우리에게 외치는 소리가 들렸다. "사모, 아주머니, 들어오세요. 문 잠겨있지 않아요" 문을 열고 주칭네 거실로 들어오니 창가에 앉아있는 주칭이 보였다. 분홍색 잠옷을 입은 주칭은 바지자락을 걷어올리고 발톱에 매니큐어를 바르는 중이었다. 머리에는 파마롤을 달고 있었다. 우릴 보더니 고개를 들어 싱긋 웃었다. "그렇지않아도 두 분 저만치서부터 오시는거 봤는데 매니큐어가 마르질 않아서 신을 신고 나갈 수가 없었어요. 기다리게 해서 죄송해요. 마침 잘 오셨어요, 아까 점심에 당초제자 糖醋蹄子 (돼지족발찜) 만들었는데 같이 먹을 사람 없어서 어쩌나 싶었거든요. 좀 있으면 맞은편 쉬 할머니가 뜨개바늘 돌려주러 오실 거에요. 마작 치기 딱 좋게 4명이네" 주칭 말이 끝나기도 전에 쉬 할머니가 들어왔다. 주칭은 황망히 창가에서 내려와 매니큐어를 정리하고 일품향 주인아주머니한테 말했다. "아주머니, 죄송한데 저 대신 탁자 좀 옮겨주세요. 전 부엌에서 요리 내올게요. 오늘은 다들 손 빠른 여자들이니까 밥 먹고 24판 다 돌릴 수 있겠어요" 주칭이 부엌으로 들어가고 나도 뒤따라 들어와 손을 거들었다. 주칭은 프라이팬 속 당초제자를 접시에 담아내곤 빈 팬에 두부를 집어넣고 볶기 시작했다. 나는 주칭 옆에서 접시를 들고 서서 다 볶아지길 기다렸다. "샤오꾸 사고 들으셨죠?" 주칭은 두부를 볶으면서 내 쪽을 보지 않은 채 물었다. "아까 일품향 아주머니가 말해주셨어." 내가 대답했다. "샤오꾸는 여기에 가족 친척 아무도 없어요. 저랑 그 사람 동기 몇 명이 장례 치렀네요. 어제 오후에 벽담 碧潭공동묘지에다 유골 묻고 왔답니다" 나는 주칭 뒤에 서서 가만히 응시했다. 화장기 없는 맨 얼굴임에도 주칭은 여전히 무척이나 앳되고 고왔다. 30줄에 들어선 여자라곤 도저히 믿을 수 없을 만큼, 젖살이 빠지지 않은 양 볼은 탱탱했고 피부는 윤기가 넘쳐흘렀다. 세월도 주칭의 얼굴만은 비껴간 것 같았다. 나는 주칭보다 한참 위 연배지만 더는 무어 더 가르치고 일러 줄 것이 없구나 싶었다. 주칭은 솜씨좋게 주걱으로 두부를 두어 번 쓱쓱 휘젓곤 조금 떠서 내 입에 갖다 대고 미소지으며 말했다. "사모, 마파두부 맛 좀 보세요, 간이 잘 되었나요?" 우리가 식사를 마치자 주칭은 마작용 탁자 위에 손님용 쑤저우 산 대나무 패들을 가지런히 펼쳤다. 둘러앉아 패를 돌리자마자 바로 첫판에 주칭은 대삼원 大三元 을 뽑았다. "주칭" 일품향 아주머니가 너스레를 떨었다. "오늘 운수가 좋구만, 나가서 <애국복권> 사야겠어" "두고 보세요" 주칭이 활짝 웃었다 "오늘 판은 제가 다 먹을 테니" 8판이 돌았을 쯤 주칭은 나머지 우리 셋을 월등히 앞서 나갔다. 주칭 앞의 칩은 수북히 쌓이다 못해 코끝까지 닿았다. 주칭 얼굴엔 웃음기가 가시질 않았다. 주칭은 평소 애창하는 <동산일파청> 을 내내 흥얼거렸다. 노래의 두 소절만을 쉬지 않고 거듭해 불렀다. 아이야야야야... 그대여 때를 놓치지 말고 꽃을 꺾어다 주세요….
