  [먼저 영화의 메세지를 간략하게 나타내기 위해, 월트 디즈니 사 측에서 제작한 SNS 홍보이미지와 문구를 인용한 점 양해부탁드립니다.] ==================================================== (소울 소개) 나는 어떻게 ‘나’로 태어나게 되었을까? 지구에 오기 전 영혼들이 머무는 ‘태어나기 전 세상’이 있다면? 뉴욕에서 음악 선생님으로 일하던 ‘조’는 꿈에 그리던 최고의 밴드와 재즈 클럽에서 연주하게 된 그 날, 예기치 못한 사고로 영혼이 되어 ‘태어나기 전 세상’에 떨어진다. 탄생 전 영혼들이 멘토와 함께 자신의 관심사를 발견하면 지구 통행증을 발급하는 ‘태어나기 전 세상’. ‘조’는 그 곳에서 유일하게 지구에 가고 싶어하지 않는 시니컬한 영혼 ‘22’의 멘토가 된다. 링컨, 간디, 테레사 수녀도 멘토되길 포기한 영혼 ‘22’. 꿈의 무대에 서려면 ‘22’의 지구 통행증이 필요한 ‘조’. 그는 다시 지구로 돌아가 꿈의 무대에 설 수 있을까? ===================================================== 지난 2021년 2월 1일 롯데시네마에서 디즈니픽사의 신작 '소울(Soul)'을 보게 되었다. 사실, 이 영화를 보고자 하는 마음이 생긴 것은 그보다 조금 더 전이었다.그러나 나는 이 영화를 보는 것을 계속해서 미뤘다. 그 이유로는 당연히 창궐한 전염병과 그로 인한 영화관 이용제한도 있었다.하지만 내겐 그보다 더 한 이유가 있었다. 영화라 함은, 감독이 관객에게 전달하고자 하는 메세지를 약 2시간동안 강제로 시청해야하는 것이다. 그런 점에서 어떠한 영화를 보든 관객은 기본적으로 심리적인 거부감을 지니게 된다고 생각한다.특히나 그 메세지가 '인생'에 관한 것이라면 조금은 꼰대스러운... 내지는 교훈적인 내용이 담길 것이 뻔하지 않은가. 나는 작년 이 맘때쯤부터 시작된 우울증과 인생을 살 이유를 찾지 못했다는 핑계로 하루하루를 견뎌내며 살아왔기에 그러한 이야기를 듣는 것이 거북스러웠다. 그러다 어느날, 잠시 내 마음에도 봄이 찾아왔다.내 마음에 봄이 찾아오는 경우는 흔치 않은데 아마도 미래의 나에 대한 기대가 생겼을 때인 것 같다.그 날도 그랬다.그래서 영화를 보고자 하는 마음이 생겼고 바로 실행에 옮겼다.그렇게 소울을 봤다. 소울을 보고 나니 영화가 주고자 하는 메세지는 명확했다. ["인생의 목적은 없다. 살아가는 그 순간을 긍정하라."] 어디선가 들어본 적이 있는 말 같았다. 그래서 본능적으로 한 사람을 떠올렸다. "니체"였다. 근대 문명의 본질과 위기를 사유하고자 할 때, 우리는 크게 두 가지 입장을 생각할 수 있다. 근대 문명의 본질을 '계몽주의'로 보는 것과 근대 문명의 본질을 '극단적인 니힐리즘'의 지배로 보는 것. 전자는 맑스와 자유주의로 대표되는, 사회제도의 개선과 변혁을 통해 사회적 부정의와 부자유를 극복하고자 함이다. 후자는 근대를 지배하는 것은 [공허한 무]로. 근대는 완성하는 것이 아니라 극복해야하는 것이다. 니체는 후자의 대표주자로서, "신은 죽었다"라는 말을 통해 '가치상실의 시대'를 함축했다. 그는 계몽주의가 내세운 사회적 변혁. 그리스도가 내세운 초월적 존재. 서양의 형이상학자들이 내세운 '이성'의 가치와 같은 초감성적인 이념이나 가치가 사실은 우리가 삶의 변화무상함을 견디기 위해 지어낸 허구에 불과하다는 것을 깨닫게 되었을 때, 우리에게 남는 것은 무의미하게 변하며 존재하는 생성의 세계만이 유일한 현실이라는 사실을 주창했다. 그가 말하기를 니힐리즘이란 최고의 가치들이 무가치하게 된다는 것. 즉 "왜?"라는 것에 대한 답이 결여되어 있음을 의미한다. 인간에게 있어 심리적 상태로서 허무주의가 나타나지 않을 수 없을 때는, 우리가 모든 것에서 하나의 '의미'를 찾았으나 그 의미가 그것들 안에 존재하지 않으며, 의미를 추구했던 자가 급기야 이를 향한 용기를 상실했을 때이다. 이는 어떠한 목표를 향한 과정 자체를 통하여 도달되어야만 하는 무언가가 있다는 확신. 그것이 틀렸음으로 증명되었을때 발생한다. 영화 속 주인공 "조"도 밴드에 들어가 재즈를 하는 꿈이 있었고, 그 꿈을 이뤘으나 결국 그 안에는 답이 없었다. 길 잃은 영혼 "22"도 목적을 찾아 떠났으나,도달되어야만 하는 무언가가 존재하지 않았다. 그렇다면 이러한 실패한 가치에서 벗어나 새로운 가치를 두면 문제를 해결할 수 있었을까? 니체는 초감성적인 가치들이 무가치하게 된 것이 니힐리즘의 원인이 아니라, 초감성적인 가치들의 설정 그 자체가 이미 니힐리즘의 원인이었다고 말하면서, 새로운 가치의 설정을 통해 이 허무함은 극복할 수 없음을 강조했다. 특히나 이러한 허무감이 극대화 되는 경우는 바로 '영원회귀'였다. 생이 아무런 목표없이 자신을 동일한 형태로 반복하는 것 뿐이라는 사상.그러나 이는 역설적으로 이를 긍정할 때, 이를 극복할 수 있는 힘을 지니게 된다. 영화 속 주인공들 또한, 이를 긍정하게 되었을 때 비로소 "불꽃"을 찾을 수 있었고, 인생을 살 이유를 찾을 수 있었으며 그 깨달음이 인생의 전부라는 것을 알게되자, 인생을 내려놓을 수도 있었다. 내가 보기에 소울은, 21세기를 살아가는 우리에게 "왜 이미 19세기 철학자에 의해 밝혀진 인생의 정의에 대해 아직도 몰라요?" 라고 하는 것만 같다. 니체의 이야기를 우화처럼 우리에게 들려주고자 하는 것 같았다.어찌보면 감독의 생각은 없이 그저 성서를 집필하듯 니체의 생각을 받아적은 것만 같았다.그렇지만 잠시 내가 잊고 있었던 인생이란 무엇인가에 대한 답을 다시 찾게 해주었다. 삶의 허무주의를 인정하고, 긍정하며 이를 이어나가고자 하는 의지의 중요성. 그것을 유념토록 하였다. 인생이란 망망대해를 항해함에 있어 중요한 것은 내가 "바다"에 있다는 사실을 인정하는 것이다. 그것을 긍정하는 것이다.그리고 마저 항해하는 것이다. 각자는 각자의 입장과 사회적 위치와 경제적 사정을 지니기에 이를 부정할 생각은 없다.그런 사람들의 입장에서 이 영화가 주고자하는 메세지는 다소 불쾌하게 느껴질 수도 있다.
그러나 사회 어느 계급에 속하던 간에, 모든 것을 배제하고 나면 남는 것은 허무주의라는 것에 동의하지 않을 근대적, 현대적 인간이란 존재하지 않는다고 믿는다.결국엔 인생의 어느 순간에는 부딪히고 말 벽에 너무 다치지 말라고. 영화는 미리 우리에게 알려주고 있는 게 아닐까 생각이 든다.
