[스포일러가 있습니다.] 어제 소울을 봤습니다. 굉장히 독특한 영화였고, 생각할 점을 많이 던져주는 영화였습니다만.... 저는 별로였습니다. 별로였다는 게 영화 내부적으로 뭔가 심각한 단점이 있다기보단 저랑 그냥 잘 안 맞는 느낌이었습니다. 특히 아쉬운 점은 [모든 것에는 대가가 따른다는 법칙]을 어겼다는 겁니다. 제가 빅 히어로6를 좋아하면서도 싫어하는 이유가 마지막에 베이맥스가 살아 돌아오는 그 장면 때문이고, 제가 인사이드 아웃을 높이 평가하는 이유가 유년기를 상징하는 빙봉이 주인공을 위해 희생하고 사라지기 때문입니다. 이야기 구조에 있어서, 처음에 설정해둔 구조는 끝까지 유지되어야만 해요. 주인공과 22번 중에서 한 명만 살 수 있다면 한 명만 살아남는 게 맞죠. <소울>은 과감하게 끝을 망쳐버립니다. 절대자? 신? 여튼 제리는 주인공에게 한 번의 기회를 더 줍니다. 죽음에서 돌아오는 거죠. 이 장면이 너무 싫었습니다. 정말. 현실에서 죽음을 겪으면 두 번째 기회는 없는 거잖아요. 감독의 의도가 무엇인지 알 수가 없었습니다. 제가 온워드를 보면서 그렇게 울었던 것도 죽은 아버지가 죽음을 극복한 게 아니라, 잠깐 돌아온 거였거든요. 아주 잠깐. 정말 많은 사람이 잃어버린 사람을 다시 만나기를 원하지만 절대 그럴 수 없다는 걸 알기에 영화는 아주 짧은 만남을 선사하고 사라져 버리죠. 처음부터 시간은 정해져 있었고, 그 시간 속에서 이야기를 풀어 나가요. 아쉬운 점은 있더라도 최소한 결말은 빛났죠. 근데 소울은 그렇지 않았어요. 소울은 서사의 끝에서 자기가 말한 법칙을 어기면서 스스로 초라해졌어요. 그러면서 주제 의식까지 흐려집니다. <소울>의 주제의식은 아주 모호해요. 아이들이 본다면 이게 도대체 무슨 얘기인지 별로 공감하지 못할 거에요. 주로 대사보다는 장면을 통해 주제의식을 전달했던 감독답게 <소울>에도 아주 좋은 장면들이 있어요. 피자 장면이나, 트럼펫을 포기하러 온 아이의 장면, 엄마와의 대화, 트럼펫 연주자와의 대화, 제리와의 대화, 마지막에 지구로 날아가는 장면까지... 문제는 주제 전달에서 이미지보다는 대사가 중심이 되고 장면이 매끄럽게 이어지지 않는 다는 점이에요. 인사이드 아웃의 주제가 뭐였죠? "성장에는 슬픔이 따른다" 업의 주제는 뭘까요? "오지 않은 미래와 지나간 과거보다, 현재가 더 중요하다" 인사이드 아웃에서는 그걸 구슬이 합쳐지는 장면으로 표현했고, 업에서는 칼이 집을 떠나보내는 장면으로 표현했죠. 소울에도 그런 장면은 있어요. 엄마와 대화하는 씬, 트럼펫 연주자와 대화하는 씬, 지구로 떠나는 씬, 마지막 엔딩까지. 문제는 그걸 너무 대사로 보여준다는 점이에요. 시각 매체에서 느낄 수 있는 카타르시스가 별로 없었어요. 업에서 집이 날아가는 모습, 인사이드 아웃에서 가족이 껴앉는 모습에 대사가 별로 없어도 마음이 이해되는 것처럼 말이에요. 물론 지구로 날아가는 씬은 멋졌습니다. 정말 감동 그 자체... 근데 그 감동을 결말이 망쳐버려요. 정말 아쉬웠습니다. 개인적으로 장면 장면은 정말 좋았습니다. 말씀하신 결말 부분은 어린이 애니메이션이라 그랬겠거니 했어요. 조가 담담하게 돌아서서 '그레이트 비욘드'로 가는 것도 좋았겠지만 주제가 작은 일상을 소중히 누리는 건데 아직 그렇게 지내보지 못한 조가 한 번쯤은 그걸 해보는 것도?
