사실 반은 어그로인 명제입니다. 커리어 per 15, ws/48 .131인 선수(그 마저도 18-19부터는 3점이 안 들어가서 그말싫 수준이구요)가 골스의 핵심이라니. 참으로 이상해보이는 주장 아니겠습니까. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 명제는 반은 참, 반은 거짓이라고 생각합니다. 디그린을 공격/수비로 나눠서 보겠습니다. 공격적인 부분 - 3점슛 거의 없음 - 어느정도의 페이스업(림을 마주보고 공을 드리블 해 들어가는 것) - 전반적인 농구지능이 좋음. - 눈치가 정말 좋음 인데... 분명히 3점슛이 15-16 이후로 없는 수준이라, 안 풀릴때 커리 더블팀 당하고 그린 섀깅 당하는 모습을 보면 답답함이 느껴집니다만, 이 점은 디그린의 잘못으로 완전 귀속시키기보다는, 골스의 로스터 문제도 있고... 어느정도의 페이스업이 가능하다는건 골스란 팀에 여러가지 옵션을 부여해 줍니다. 댄토니 혁명 이후 퍼리미터 지역에서의 픽앤롤은 그냥 기본적인 오펜스 셋팅이 되었는데, 이를 대처하기 위해 NBA는 크게 두 분류로 구분하면 드랍백, 더블팀(이 타이밍에 따라 구분하는 단어가 여러가지 있는데, 그냥 단순 더블팀으로 하겠습니다)이 있습니다. 드랍백을 쓰는 팀의 경우 디그린이 스크린을 겁니다. 상대 빅맨은 이지선다에 빠집니다. 나갈까 말까? 안 나갔다가 점퍼를 얻어 맞습니다. 그럼 점점 드랍백을 쓰는 팀의 빅맨은 이끌려 나갑니다.(이 부분은 감독 - 선수들의 현장 주문에 따라 달라집니다. 스킴을 그대로 유지하는 팀이 있고, 빅맨을 점점 내보내는 팀이 있고, 예시를 위해 단순화 시켰습니다) 그럼 골 밑이 비구요. 이럴때 바운드 패스 한방이면 디그린의 어정쩡한 드리블 이후 레이업 or 덩크를 얻어맞습니다. 디그린이 스크린을 걸고 롤링해 들어갑니다. 상대 빅맨은 여전히 림 아래에서 캠핑하고 있습니다. 여기서 디그린의 가장 큰 장점이 발휘됩니다. 위에 이야기 한 '눈치'죠. 림까지 롤링해 들어가는게 아닌, 숏롤이라고 부르는 행위를 통해 림보다는 멀어진 위치에서 킥아웃 패스를 합니다. 이것까지 하면 디그린은 다 한겁니다. 그 상황에서 슛을 넣느냐, 마느냐는 받은 선수에게 달린거니까요. 더블팀이 들어가도 마찬가지입니다. 커리는 디그린 혹은 3자에게 공을 빼주는데, 3자에게 공을 빼주면 당연 수비는 4:5 상황이니까 한 명은 무조건 노마크입니다. 이걸 받고 바로 쏘느냐, 한번 볼을 더 돌리느냐는 그 개인적인 판단 하에 이루어지는거구요. 이 상황에서 볼을 한번 더 돌려주는 역할이 디그린이다. 그러면 디그린은 최적의 선수를 찾아냅니다. 그 이외엔, 많이 보는 장면인데. 골스는 가드가 하프라인부터 볼 핸들링을 잘 하진 않습니다. 디그린이 자주 하죠. 여기서 파생되는 장점으로는, 순간적으로 연쇄적으로 다발적인 지역에서 스크린이 이루어지면서 상대 수비하는 선수는 픽에 걸리는데,(골스 팬들이 이야기 하는 동네 한바퀴) 상대 선수가 커리, 탐슨이라는겁니다. 그럼 디그린은 탑에서 좀 떨어진 위치에서 특유의 시야를 이용해서 가장 적합한 선수에게 패스를 합니다. 그럼 커리나 탐슨은 아주 '찰나'의 노마크 상태가 되죠. - 골스라는 팀이 약화된건, 러프하게 말하면 미국 드래프트, 샐러리 캡 기반이니 당연하다고 볼 수 있겠지만, 그 과정에서 순간적인 판단을 하는 선수들을 잃은게 큽니다. 지금은 그게 가능한게 디그린밖에 없죠. 예전엔 이궈달라, 리빙스턴, 웨스트 등이 그 기능을 분담했지만. - 수비 부분에서... 디그린은 198cm입니다. 이제는 트위너라고 불리는 선수들이 전천후 윙맨으로 많이 뛰지만, 디 그린 데뷔 시기만 해도 이런 선수들이 리그에 많이 없었죠. 이런 선수들의 장점은, 이론상 모든 포지션에 대한 수비가 가능하다는겁니다.(물론 그게 가능한 윙맨은 정말 극소수입니다) 가드부터 빅맨까지. 디 그린은 분명 이 부분에서 최강자였습니다. 가드의 스피드를 따라 갈 수 있는 민첩성, 빅맨을 어느정도 막을 수 있는 힘을 겸비하고 있으니까요. 한 마디로 스위칭 되서 퍼리미터(3점 라인 바깥)까지 끌려 나가도, 가드의 사이드스텝에 쉽게 뚫리지 않으며, 림 근처에서도 빅맨을 어느정도 힘으로 제어할 수 있다는겁니다. 이것만 봐도 분명 디그린은 대단한 선수임에 틀림 없습니다. 근데 디그린이 진정으로 수비에서 대단한 점은 뭐냐면... 위에서 이야기한 '눈치'와 관련된건데. 헬핑 수비가 정말 사기급입니다. 디그린이 수비하는 모습을 보면, 본인 앞의 공격수에 시선을 두지만, 끊임없이 뒤의 시야를 체크합니다. 곁눈질로요. 이 과정에서 특유의 스틸, 디나이등이 이뤄지면서, 빠른 역습이 가능하게 되면서 소위 골스 경기를 보면 나오는 빠른 시간 일방적인 run(ex 10-0)이 나오게 됩니다. 물론 디그린이 무결점의 선수는 아닙니다. 분명 점퍼가 거의 없는 수준이라 극단적인 대처법이 나오고, 팀원들의 슛감이 좋지 않으면, 공격적인 부분에서는 아무런 기능을 하지 못할때가 많죠. 그러나 팀에 점퍼를 퀵릴리즈로 쏠 수 있는 선수가 있다면 그를 극대화 하고, 수비 부분을 전체적으로 업그레이드 시켜 줄 수 있고. 이 두 가지 툴을 다 가진 선수는 거의 디그린이 유일하다고 생각합니다. 그래서 디그린에 대한 커의 찬양이 있었고, 실제로 pipm, rpm 계열의 마진 스탯이 어느정도 증명하기도 하구요. 디 그린이 골스에 없었으면 초창기부터 이런 롤을 부여받지 못하고, 헤매다가 정착했을 선수라고 생각합니다. 그러나 골스도 디 그린이 없었으면 특유의 오펜스 셋, 수비 시스템을 가동하지 못했을거라고 생각합니다. 그래서 디 그린은 골스의 핵입니다. 짤방도 없고, 글로만 이루어진 형태라 조금 이해하기 어려울 수도 있겠지만. 제 생각은 그렇습니다. 궁금한 점이 있으시면 최대한 성실하게 답변 드리겠습니다.
