1번부터 흠칫했네요 제가 청각장애인이라서.
저는 장애 때문에 한 번도 불행하다고 생각한 적 없고 그저 타고난 나의 하나의 특성이다 라고 받아들였어요. 저는 소리가 존재하지 않는 세상이 익숙하고 당연했고 청각장애가 가져다주는 장점도 있기는해요. 하지만 저는 비장애인 삶이 훨씬 더 낫다고 생각해요. 아무리 장애를 가짐으로써 얻는 혜택이 있다 해도, 결국 저는 소수자, 약자에 속하거든요. 제 장애는 그리 티가 나지 않기 때문에, 저를 아는 많은 사람들은 저를 평범한 일반인, 비장애인이라고 당연하게 생각하겠죠. 그런 생각의 차이가 때... 더 보기

그래서 저는 제 아이가 가능하면 장애가 유전되지 않고 비장애인으로서 태어나길 바라고 있어요. 그래서 일부러 청각장애인을 낳는다... 미국 사회는 잘 모르나 한국 사회에서 자라온 저로서는 이해할 수 없어요. 슬프지만 장애 유전 가능성이 있는 저는 결혼 세계에서 보면 그리 좋은 상대가 아니에요. 하고 많은 비장애인들이 있는데 왜 굳이 장애인 며느리를 들이냐, 는게 현실인걸요. 저는 자라온 환경이 운이 좋았고 나름 멘탈이 쎈 편이라 잘 버텼지만 장애인으로 태어난 제 아이가 마주할 한국 현실이 좋지 않을 수 있음을 알기에, 비장애인의 삶이 훨씬 더 편함을 알기에 저는 이해할 수 없네요. 세상은 청각장애인 공동체만 있는것도 아니고 다양한 공동체가 있고 좋은 공동체로 자신이 스스로 선택하게 두지, 자신의 의사 결정도 없이 부모가 강제로 선택한 공동체가 의미가 있나... 문득 장애인으로 태어난 제 아이가 운 나쁘게 안 좋은 일 겪고 유전 가능성 알면서도 나를 낳아줘서 왜 힘들게 하냐고 원망 들을까봐 무섭네요.
계획적으로 낳는 것이 잘못 됐냐고 묻는다면 그들의 선택이니까 비난하고 싶지 않지만 장애인으로서 사는 삶을 알면서도 굳이..? 싶기는 해요. 미국 사회라 다른건가 싶기도 하고.
