* 이번 글은 출판사에서 의뢰받아 각종 토픽을 다룬 밀리터리 잡상식 책의 일부입니다. ...의뢰받고 작성한 지 1.5년이 지났는데 사실 언제 나올지는 모르겠습니다. 요새 힘든가 보더군요. 안 나올 수도 있을 것 같아요. 어쨌든 재미있게 쓴, 자극적인 첫 무료 부분입니다. 가급적 식사 시간과 멀찌감치 떨어뜨려 읽어주세요. [자연에서 받아 다시 자연에 되돌려주기] 사실 모든 사람이 똥과 멀리 있고 싶어 하죠. 그게 뭐 좋다고 친근하게 굴겠어요. 이 글을 쓰려고 각종 자료를 찾아보는 내내 속이 별로였던 저도 역시 그렇고요. 그래서 똥 대신 제목처럼 순화시켜서 불렀더니 좀 편안해지더라고요. 해서 이번 글 내내 똥은 웬만하면 그대로 안 부르고, 자연의 선물로 부르겠습니다. 쾌변은 축복이요, 똥이 흙으로 돌아가서 식물을 살찌우는 순환계의 원리를 생각하면 그렇게 불러도 그리 이상하지는 않을 것 같습니다. 헷갈리시다고요? 입에 안 붙는다고요? 그래도 저 좀 살려주세요. ……군인들도 마찬가지입니다. 자연의 선물은 필수적인 행동이지만 그렇게 달가운 일은 아닙니다. 어쩔 땐 귀찮고, 본질적으로는 더러운 행위이죠. 무방비가 되는 측면도 있습니다. 바지를 벗고 앉는 만큼 등 뒤는 보이지 않습니다. 그리고 장비나 복장이 해제되면서 뭔가 인간이라는 면이 확실히 드러나는 동시에 좀 딱하죠. 1차, 2차 세계 대전 참전 용사들의 증언을 보면 저격수 포함 국적 구분 없이 자연의 선물을 자연에게 돌려주는 사람은 가급적 쏘지 않는 불문율이 있었습니다. 그러나 군인들에게는 원하지 않았는데도 자연의 선물이 찾아오는 순간이 있습니다. 용감하든, 아니든 정예병사든, 풋내기든 참전해서 위기가 닥치면 체질에 따라 구분 없이 공평하게 찾아오지만 경험한 군인은 웬만하면 숨기는 비밀의 순간이 있다고 해요. 극한 상황에서 흔히 볼 수 있지만 크게 논의된 적 없는 이 비밀은 바로……. [굳이 말할 필요는 없는, 하지만 자연스러운] 연구에 따르면 생사가 오가는 극도의 스트레스 상황에서 인간의 신체는 몇 가지 공통적인 반응을 보입니다. 우선 심장이 빨리 뛰면서 아드레날린이 분비되고, 사지의 온도가 살짝 내려갑니다. 주먹질이나 격한 행동을 대비하기 위한 신체의 본능적인 반응이죠. 그러고는 웬만한 사람들은 자신도 모르게 대소변을 보게 됩니다. 부상자를 다뤄본 적이 있는 응급 치료 요원, 경찰관, 혹은 소방관들은 많은 피해자들이 불쾌한 경험을 한다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 물론 자신들도 위기 상황에 빠지면 똑같이 반응하고요. 해당 경험 중 가장 오래된 문헌은 제가 알기로 일본 전국 시대 무장이자, 도요토미 히데요시에 이어 일본의 통치자가 된 도쿠가와 이에야스의 경험담입니다. 이에야스는 어린데다 동맹도 없었던 군소 군벌이었던 시절, 전투에 패해 도망가면서 말등 위에서 자연의 선물을 내보낸 적이 있습니다. 옆에서 이를 본 종자는 비웃었고 이에야스는 손가락까지 찍어가며 이것은 자연의 선물이 아니고 된장이라고 우겼습니다. 그는 이러한 일화에 교훈이 있다고 생각했는지 무사히 귀환한 후 그림과 석상으로 제작해 일화를 제작해 떳떳이 그날의 망신을 세상에 알렸습니다. 현대에는 그림 대신 통계로 남아 있습니다. 제2차 세계 대전에 참전한 미군 전체의 전과에 관한 공식 연구서 <아메리칸 솔저>에 따르면 참전 용사의 4분의 1이 바지에 오줌을, 8분의 1은 똥을 쌌다고 하네요. 최전선에서 복무한 병력만 대상으로 삼고 그중에서 격렬한 전투를 경험하지 않은 병력을 제외하면 약 50퍼센트는 바지에 오줌을 쌌고, 약 25퍼센트는 똥을 쌌다고 인정했습니다. 그런데 다들 아시죠? 신체나 사생활과 관련된 설문은 제대로 된 통계를 내기 힘들다는 점이요. 과장해서 자신의 경험을 부풀려 증언하는 경우도 있지만 대체로는 일반적인 인식과 주변의 눈을 의식해서 축소시키거나 없애버리는 경향성이 있습니다. 최전선에서 복무한 병력의 50퍼센트가 본인이 원하지 않은 자연의 선물을 보았단 통계는 솔직하게 사실을 인정한 군인들의 증언만 반영된 것입니다. 따라서 실제 수치는 이보다 더 높을 가능성이 큽니다. 현실적으로 성인인 군인들이 ‘바지에 똥을 싼’ 경험이 주는 굴욕감 때문에 사실을 기꺼이 인정하기란 어려운 일이었을 겁니다. 그냥 호사가의 헛소문이나 군인을 험담하기 위해 만들어낸 말이란 의심을 하시는 분들도 있을 겁니다. 하긴 그렇죠. 전투 장면에서 주인공이 바지에 똥을 싸는 전쟁 영화는 없죠. 노병이 된 참전용사가 대놓고 그런 경험을 밝히는 경우도 없고요. 귀가해서 전쟁 회고담을 말해 주는 자리에서 손자나 손녀에게 쉽게 말할 수 있는 이야기도 아닙니다. 하지만 공식적인 통계가 분명히 있는 현상이라는 사실을 입증하고 있어요. 따라서 자존심 상하고 굴욕적인 경험에 속하는 이러한 얘기는 좀 더 이해받기 쉬운 고통이나 자랑하기 쉬운 무용담에 가려져 보이지 않는다고 봐야 합니다. 이 경우 <전투의 심리학>의 저자 데이브 그로스먼은 20년 뒤에 손자가 전투에 나섰다가 속옷에 똥을 쌌을 때 일어난다고 지적합니다. 그들의 입장에서는 영화 속 주인공이나 참전 용사인 할아버지에겐 없던 일이 일어난 셈이므로, 자신에게 문제가 있다고 생각하며 자책할 수밖에 없습니다. 먼 나라 이야기가 아닙니다. 당장 북한의 도발이나 급변 사태, 심하면 전쟁까지 일어날 수 있는 우리나라의 정훈 시간을 생각해 봅시다. 저런 일을 터놓고 알려줄 분위기가 아니에요. <전투의 심리학> 공저자 로런 크리스텐슨은 법집행 쪽에서 잔뼈가 굵은 인물입니다. 그는 격렬한 총격전에서 자신을 방어해야 하는 상황에 몰린 경찰관에게 스트레스가 미치는 영향에 대한 글을 주요 경찰 잡지에 기고한 적이 있었습니다. 원고를 채택하기로 결정한 편집자는 전체적인 내용에는 만족했지만 경찰관이 임무 중에 옷에 똥을 쌀 가능성을 언급한 부분은 삭제했습니다. 이와 관련된 사회 통념은 여러 세대에 걸쳐 지속되었습니다. 해당 현상은 1차 세계대전을 배경으로 삼은 레마르크의 반전 소설 <서부전선 이상 없다>에서 주요 인물은 물론, 주변인 전원이 경험해 보았다고 거론할 정도로 자연스러운 일입니다. 하지만 실제로는 대다수 참전 용사에게는 감추고 싶은 어두운 비밀입니다. 이런 사실은 놀랄 만큼 은밀하게 숨겨져 있고, 거의 문화적 금기에 가깝습니다. 2001년 9월 11일 테러당시 현장에 있었거나 투입된 미국의 법집행관들의 일화입니다. 화자는 현장 근처에서 첫 번째 건물이 무너질 때 있다가 일단 도망갔습니다. 검은 먼지가 그를 감쌌고 하늘을 시커멓게 뒤덮었습니다. 우리가 기록영상에서 봤던 그 먼지 구름입니다. 두 번째 건물까지 무너지면서 갑작스러운 충격과 돌풍, 돌가루, 먼지가루가 더 심해졌습니다. 의식이 희미해져 가면서 자신이 죽어간다고 생각하던 경험자는 구름이 걷히자 다시 뒤돌아 건물 쪽으로 가 사람들을 도왔습니다. 몇 시간 뒤 그는 체육관에 있는 샤워장을 안내받았습니다. 그 안에서 그는 자신 빼고 모든 사람이 옷에 자연의 선물을 발산했다는 사실을 발견했습니다. 화자가 유일하게 멀쩡했던 이유도 분명했습니다. 사건이 터지기 전 이미 화장실을 제대로 다녀왔기 때문이었습니다. 이런 일을 경험한 생존자는 용기가 부족했던 탓일까요? 당연히 전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 우리가 비슷한 경험을 하게 되면 이것이 매우 정상적인 생리 현상이라는 사실을 아는 것이 좋습니다. 정신건강에도 훨씬 이롭고요. 이제는 전장에 피, 땀 외에 또 다른 것들이 흐를 수도 있다는 사실을 인정해야 할 때가 아닌가 싶습니다. [무기가 된 경우] 베트남전에서 미군과 싸우던 베트남군은 주요 지점에 부비트랩을 설치했습니다. 한 방에 사람을 죽이는 물건도 있었지만 설치 시간이나 제작 난이도 때문에 바닥에 꼬챙이를 설치하고 위에는 대충 덮어 발등을 뚫는 등 간단한 부비트랩도 많이 사용했습니다. 이때 베트남 병사들은 물소나 인간의 것을 꼬챙이에 발랐는데 찔린 미군은 그 안에 들어 있는 세균 때문에 이중으로 고생했습니다. 오줌이 흑색화약을 만드는 재료 중 하나로 쓰인 사실 역시 유명하죠? 세 가지 재료 중 하나인 초석을 만들 때는 부뚜막과 마루의 흙, 오줌 등을 긁어모은 뒤 말려 체로 치는 방법으로 모아 사용했습니다. [약으로 쓴 경우] 2차 세계 대전 당시 북아프리카 사막에서 싸우던 독일군은 이질에 걸려 자주 설사에 시달렸습니다. 이질은 환자 또는 보균자가 배출한 자연의 선물을 통해 나온 시겔라 균을 입으로 소량으로도 삼켰을 때 감염됩니다. 당시 작전 지역 내 수원은 한정되었는데, 관리자는 당연히 없었습니다. 물 근처에서 다양한 사람들이 오갔고, 동물들도 따라다녔죠. 제한이나 관리가 없으니 사람과 동물의 배설이 자유롭게 이뤄졌습니다. 이렇게 오염된 수원의 물 때문에 독일군은 열이 났고, 배가 아프다가 설사를 쏟았습니다. 영국군을 무너뜨리고 중동의 석유를 차지해야 하는 독일군에게는 불행한 일이었습니다. 환자들을 돕기 위해 본국에서 다양한 유형의 과학자와 의사 그룹이 도착했습니다. 보유한 항생제로는 이질을 고칠 수 없었기에 그들은 같은 상황인 현지인들은 대부분 팔팔하다는 사실에 주목했습니다. 관찰이 필요했죠. 관찰 결과 의료진은 현지인 환자 한 명이 낙타를 쫓아다니다 낙타가 갓 싼 똥을 먹는다는 사실을 발견하고 충격에 휩싸였습니다. 효과에는 의문의 여지가 없었습니다. 낙타 똥을 먹은 사람들은 하루만에 건강을 회복했습니다. 아랍인들은 낙타가 특별한 약초나 식물을 먹은 게 아니고 보통의 낙타와 보통의 배설물임을 증언했습니다. 자신들이 몇 세대 동안 경험적으로 증명했으며, 신선할 때 빨리 먹어야 한다는 충고를 잊지 않았습니다. 나치 과학자들은 낙타 똥에서 바실루스 수브틸리스(Bacillus subtilis, 고초균)를 발견했습니다. 바실루스 수브틸리스는 다른 박테리아나 바이러스를 먹어치우는 성질이 있어서 항생 물질로 사용이 가능했습니다. 과학자들은 현재는 프로바이오틱스로 널리 활용 중인 이 박테리아를 활용해서 군인들을 살리기 위해 국통에다, 따뜻하게 데운 물에다 낙타…… 이하 생략하겠습니다. 훗날 그들은 이를 건조시키고 캡슐 형태로 넣는 방법을 개발했습니다. 빨리 개발했음 좋았을 것 같아요. 실제로 마신 독일군들은 참 힘들었겠어요. [저격수는 자연스럽게] 월남전 당시 목표를 완수하기 위해 1일 이상 한 자리에 대기하는 저격수가 흔했다고 합니다. 특히 암살 임무를 맡은 저격수는 적이 언제 올지 모르기 때문에 잠도 자기 힘들었습니다. 잠도 자기 힘든 판에 따로 시간을 내거나 자세를 크게 바꿔 자연의 선물을 내놓기는 쉽지 않았겠죠. 베트남전 당시 93명 저격 공식기록을 가진 미 해병대 저격수 카를로스 해스콕은 3박 4일에 걸쳐 엄중한 경계 속에 있는 월맹군 작전기지에 침투해 장군을 암살한 비 공식 기록을 가지고 있습니다. 1.5킬로미터를 포복전진으로 전진한 그는 목표가 나올 때까지 기다렸다가 적 사령부에서 나오는 장군을 보고 저격했습니다. 당시 헤스콕은 별다른 식사 없이 3일 동안 작은 수통의 물만을 마셨으며 대소변은 모두 바지 속에 그대로 놓았다고 회고했습니다.
