폭스바겐은 미국에 시판하는 티구안의 환경기준을 통과하기 위해서 2000cc 디젤엔진의 ECU에 배기가스 검사모드를 심어 놓고 배기가스 검사 모드일 때는 엔진에서 배출하는 유해물질을 감소하도록하는 소프트웨어를 작동시키고 평상시에는 연비와 출력을 향상시키기 위해서 유해물질을 감소시키는 소프트웨어를 작동시키지 않도록 하였습니다. 이 사건은 미국 환경청에 의해서 적발되어, 미국에서 2009년부터 2015년까지 판매된 폭스바겐의 차량 비틀, 제타, 골프, 파사트 등 4실린더 디젤 엔진이 들어간 폭스바겐 차량들이 약 50만 대 이상의 규모로 대량 리콜과 동시에 최대 180억 달러, 한화로 약 21조원에 달하는 벌금을 물게 됐습니다. 무거운 차인 티구안이 미국의 배기가스 기준을 통과하지 못할 것 같아서 이러한 꼼수를 쓴 것으로 예상되는데, 티구안만 적용한 것이 아니라 2000cc 디젤엔진을 사용하는 모든 차량에 적용되어 버렸기 때문에 문제가 커진것으로 보입니다. 대배기량 디젤엔진은 요소수를 사용하는 시스템을 쓰기 때문에 이런 꼼수를 쓰지 않아도 EURO6에 상응하는 기준에 맞출수 있는 것으로 보이고, 요소수 시스템을 사용하는 아우디는 무사히 통과한 것으로 보아서 요소수 시스템이 아닌 다른 방법으로는 EURO6에 상응하는 기준을 맞추기 힘든 것으로 보입니다. 이미 작년 유럽에서도 평상시에도 유로6 수준으로 운행되는 차량이 과연 존재하는 가에 대한 의문이 있었기 때문에 이번 사건이 자동차 산업에 미치는 영향을 클 것으로 보입니다. 이번 사건을 계기로 디젤엔진은 대부분 요소수 시스템으로 갈 것으로 예상되고 대부분의 국가에서 상용차가 아닌 승용차의 디젤엔진 사용은 상당한 페널티가 가해질 것 같습니다. 사족) 다음 번에 차를 사면 티구안을 사 볼까 했었는데, 모하비 신형이 나오면 거기로 가거나 아니면 아예 납작한 차를 구매해야......
