이어즈 & 이어즈의 세계는 2019년부터 약 30여년 간의 시대상의 변화를 한 가족의 시점에서 보여주는 영국의 미래 모습입니다. 대략 2040년 정도에 끝나는데, 20년 후라는 걸 생각해보면, 생각보다 많은 것들이 변하지는 않죠. 우리가 스스로 만들어내는 파멸을 맛보여주는 블랙 코미디이자, 정치 드라마이고, 약간의 SF 요소도 가미된 드라마입니다. 자주 듣는 팟캐스트에서 추천해 주길래 마침 체르노빌을 보고 한동안 들어가지 않던 왓챠 플레이를 오래간만에 이용했습니다. 드라마에 자주 등장하지는 않지만 큰 축을 담당하는 건 기업가 출신 정치인 비비언 룩입니다. 1화의 첫 부분은 토론회에서 팔레스타인 문제를 물어보는 상대에게 "전 그런거 XX도 신경 안 써요." 라고 말하는 비비언 룩의 모습을 보는 라이언스 가족의 모습을 보여줍니다. 토론장은 아수라장이 되는데, 재미있는 건 TV를 보면서 비비언 룩에게 반응하는 가족들입니다. 어떤 등장인물은 사람이 저럴 수 있다며 질색하지만, 또 어떤 등장인물은 신선하고 도발적인 정치인에게 매력을 느끼게 됩니다. 아마 이 토론을 보던 다른 사람들도 그렇게 생각하고 있겠죠. 2019년의 시점에는 선거에 낙선하지만 시간이 지나면서 점차 비비언 룩을 지지하는 사람들이 늘어나고, 보궐 선거에 당선이 되었다가, 이윽고는 노동당과 보수당을 견제하는 캐스팅 보드 역할인 원내 3당이 될 정도로 어느 정도의 입지를 다지고, 나중에는 총리까지 오릅니다. 이 비비언 룩이 사실은 인기를 얻을 만한 발언만 하면서 중요한 문제는 피해가고, 그리고 뒤로는 온갖 부정한 행위를 저지르는 정치인이라는 겁니다. 슬프게도 이 비비언 룩도 사람들의 지지를 얻으며 점차 성장한 정치인이기도 하죠. 그녀가 집권한 영국은 난민 수용에 대해 적대적이고 우범 지역을 봉쇄하는 정책을 펼칩니다. 빠르게 망가져가는 시스템 속에서 라이언스 가족들은 각자의 어려움을 겪고, 이들이 겪는 경제, 노동, 난민, 사회, 빈곤 문제들과 20여년 간의 변화가 여섯 편의 드라마의 중심적인 내용입니다. 등장인물들은 사회/경제적인 수준이나 교육 수준도, 직업도 다르지만 비비언 룩에 대해서 비판적이기도, 호의적이기도, 혹은 그냥 체제를 파괴하는 것 자체를 선호하기도 합니다. 드라마의 주제이기도 하겠습니다만, 이 드라마는 우리가 만들어낸 권위적인 정치인의 탄생과 그가 만들어내는 결과를 섬뜩하게 보여줍니다. 이 비비언 룩이라는 정치인은 자신에게 방해되는 것은 배제하거나, 무시하면서 말을 돌리거나 보기 좋은 말로 사람들을 휘어잡곤 하죠. 일관되게 비비언 룩에 대해 비판적으로 바라보는 등장인물, 할머니인 뮤리얼이 있습니다. 가족들이 모이는 건 대부분 할머니의 생일 잔치때인데, 손자 손녀들보다 기술적인 변화에는 서툴지만 가족들을 따뜻하게 이해해주면서도 어떤 부분에는 보수적이기도, 어떤 부분에는 열려있는, 보통 사람이지요. 가족들의 삶이 팍팍해질 때마다 모여있는 자리에서 세태에 대해 날카롭게 찔러주시는 할머니의 말이 뼈 아프게 들립니다. "세상이 이렇게 될 동안 너희들은 불평만 하고 아무것도 하지 않았지." "광대와 익살꾼들이 결국 우리를 망칠거란다." 비비언 룩이 현실의 어떠한 인물을 모티브로 했는지, 그리고 한국의 정치 지형과 연관지어 생각해보면 재미있는 지점이 많은 드라마입니다. 정치인들의 권력 다툼은 없지만 정치가 가져오는 근 20여년 간의 변화와 가족들의 변해가는 삶의 모습을 보다보면, 가장 정치적인 드라마라는 생각이 듭니다. 무엇보다 그런 정치적인 상황에서 서서히 몰락하는 가족의 스토리도 보면서, 뭔가 암울하더라구요.
