만물자존감 설을 자주 보게 되요. 연애도 자존감, 취업도 자존감, 왜 나는 자존감 뿜뿜 뭘해도 뿜뿜 못할까 흑흑 역시 문제는 자존감이지 말입니다 등등. 가끔 보면 사람들이 자존감에 바라는 모습은 그 어떤 상황에도 무너지지 않는 안정이나 자아상이 아닌가 싶을 정도니까요. 역설적으로 이는 취약함이나 수치심을 둘러싼 공포를 보여주지 않나 싶고요. 하지만 심리학계에서 바라보는 자존감self-esteem은 일상 속에서 혹은 온라인에서 거론되는 자존감과 다르더라고요. (2019). 나도 아직 나를 모른다. 홍익출판사] 에서 뇌과학과 임상심리를 엮어서 설명한 내용을 약간 정리해 보도록 하겠습니다. 1. 물론 자존감은 중요하다 미국심리학회(APA) 정의를 찾아봤어요. self-esteem n. the degree to which the qualities and characteristics contained in one’s self-concept are perceived to be positive. It reflects a person’s physical self-image, view of his or her accomplishments and capabilities, and values and perceived success in living up to them, as well as the ways in which others view and respond to that person. The more positive the cumulative perception of these qualities and characteristics, the higher one’s self-esteem. A reasonably high degree of self-esteem is considered an important ingredient of mental health, whereas low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness are common depressive symptoms. 자존감 한 사람의 자기개념 속에 포함된 특징이나 성질이 긍정적으로 지각되는 정도. 자존감은 개인의 신체적인 자기 이미지, 성취나 역량을 바라보는 관점, 살아오면서 쌓아올린 가치나 지각한 성공, 타인이 그 개인을 바라보고 반응한 방식 등에 영향을 받는다. 자신의 특징이나 성질을 누적적으로 인식하는 방식이 더 긍정적일 수록, 개인의 자존감은 높다. 합리적으로 높은 수준의 자존감은 정신건강의 중요 구성요소이며, 반면에 낮은 자존감과 무가치감은 우울증상에서 일반적이다. 정의에서 보았듯이 자존감은 누적적이고, 살면서 겪어온 여러 사건들에 영향을 받아요. 우선적으로 꼽히는 건 주양육자의 영향이지요(가족 내 역동). 또한 저조한 대인관계 성취, 직업적 성취 수준 역시 영향을 끼칩니다.  ="">회색질=회백질입니다 자존감에 영향을 주는 부정적인 경험들은 뇌의 회백질 부피에 영향을 미쳐요. 회백질은 신경세포가 모여 있고, 우리 정신의 다양한 기능에 관여한다고 하네요. 여러 정신건강 연구가 회백질의 부피 변화를 중요한 임상증상으로 제시한다고 하고요. 2. 자존감은 그 때 그 때 달라지는 상태이다. "자존감이 유별나게 높은 사람을 알고 있나요? 실제로 그런 사람이 있을까요? 그럼 자존감이 낮은 사람을 알고 있나요? 음... 이게 우리죠. 저를 포함한 우리 모두이지요. 물론 자존감이 높은 '것처럼' 보이는 사람이 있습니다. 하지만 그 사람 역시 매일매일 위아래로 끊임없이 요동치는 자존감을 끌어안고 살아갑니다. 그들도 우리와 마찬가지로 어떤 날은 스스로가 괜찮아 보이고 (아마 이런 때 당신을 만났겠지요), 어떤 날은 기분이 바닥끝까지 가라앉는 경험을 하면서도 그저 버티며, 꾸준히 살아갈 뿐입니다." (pp. 22-23) 저자는 절대적 수준의 낮은 자존감은 존재하지 않으며, 높은 자존감은 허상이라고 말합니다. 다른 사람을 보고 있노라면 그 사람이 '자존감 뿜뿜 뭘해도 뿜뿜 나는야 사랑받기 위해 태어난 사람'처럼 보여서 부러울 수도 있겠지만, 다 똑같이 오르락 내리락 하는 마음을 끌어안고 살고 있어요. 때문에 요새는 자존감 대신에 상태 자존감state self-esteem이라는 용어를 사용한다고 합니다. 삶의 맥락, 고비, 매 순간에 따라 달라질 수 있는 자기가치감이지요. 3. 칭찬해주시고, 칭찬을 편하게 들어주세요  칭찬은 상어도, 악어도, 박우진도 춤추게 합니다. 칭찬은 쾌락적이에요. 기분 좋은 물리적 접촉에 반응하는 후측 뇌섬엽posterior insula는 기분 좋은 심리적 접촉에도 활성화 된대요. 확산자기공명영상diffusion magnetic resonance imaging으로 일정 기간 자존감이 높아진 사람들의 뇌를 들여다보면 내측 전전두피질medial prefrontal ccortex: 자기개념, 사회적 기능 및 의사결정과 관련한 부분 복측 선조체ventral striatum 간 백질회로whit matter pathway: 쾌락 및 보상적 경험과 관련한 부분 두 영역 사이의 연결성이 높아져 있대요. 반대로 자존감이 낮은 사람들은 이 연결성이 눈에 띄게 저하되어 있고요. 말인즉슨, 칭찬 -> 보상적 경험 -> 자기개념 사이의 연결은 태생적인 건데, 이 연결이 약화된 결과 악순환에 빠지는 상황이 오게 된다는 거지요. 그러니 너무 고민말고 누가 칭찬하면 있는 그대로 즐거운 감정을 느끼는 것이 좋아요. 서로서로 주접 떨어주는 것도 좋고요. 이 글도 추천과 댓글 부탁드립니다. 밑줄 쫙쫙. 4. 지나치게 낮은 자존감에서 벗어나기 자존감의 기저인 가족 내 역동은 사실 문명5 스타팅이에요. 운빨게임이지요. 천조국에서 스타팅하는 경우도 있지만, Korea에서 스타팅 하기도 합니다. 부모도 부모가 되어가는 방법을 하나씩 배웁니다. 또한 그들은 현재의 우리보다 더욱 자신을 모르는 나이에 결혼을 해야했고요. 건강하지 못한 주양육자 아래에서 부적절한 태도에 노출된 경우, 우리는 자연스레 자기파괴적인 사고/감정을 익히게 됩니다. 우리는 거리를 두고 어린 시절을 건조하게 바라볼 필요가 있대요. 왜냐면 그때의 상황을 객관적으로 평가해야, 비로소 엉망으로 엉키고 오염된 지금의 감정을 조금이나마 처리할 수 있기 때문이지요. "나는 그렇게 부당하게 취급받을 이유가 없었다. 하지만 그런 상황이 있었던 것만은 사실이고, 이것이 나의 잘못이나 결함에서 기인하지 않았던 것도 사실이다. 그들은 그 나이에 알맞게, 형편없이 미숙했다." (p. 29) 하지만 중요한 점은, 과거의 오랜 이야기들이 당신의 일부를 만들었을지라도 그것이 당신의 전부는 아니라는 겁니다. 우리는 우리 자신의 보호자이자 양육자니까요. 저자는 스스로를 돌보는 두 가지 방법을 제안합니다. 1) 잘못된 상대와는 물리적/심리적으로 분리되어야 하고, 성숙한 수준의 재양육을 제공할 수 있는 사람을 찾으라 가족들과 뒤엉켜 분노를 표출하는 일은 아무런 도움이 안 됩니다. 화는 표출될 수록 커지지요. 정리되지 못한 감정 표현은 불쾌감과 죄책감으로 돌아올 뿐이고요. 소득도, 방향도 없을 뿐입니다. 성숙한 수준의 재양육을 제공할 수 있는 사람은, '나'라는 존재를 있는 그대로 긍정해주는 사람입니다. 이 사람은 심리치료자일 수도 있고, 사랑하는 사람일 수도 있고, 자기 자신이 될 수도 있대요. 그리고 상대의 호의적인 태도에 자꾸 의도를 파악하려고 하거나 의심하거나 딴죽걸지 말라고 하고요. 2) 자존감이 '높은 척' 하라. 정확하게는 내공 높은 자존감에서 나올 법한 행동을 연습하라 본문을 그대로 가져오면 - 자기의 삶에 충분히 집중하는 '척'하기 - 중립적인 이야기에도 과잉 방어하고 정색하는 패턴을 부디 억제하고 (설사 마음이 불편해졌더라도) 아무렇지 않은 '척'하기 - 불편한 상황에서 유머로 적절하게 받아치는 '척'하기 - 혼자 밥을 먹거나 홀로 있는 시간을 자연스럽게 받아들이는 '척'하기 - 실패 및 성공의 가능성이나 주위의 평판에 초연한 '척'하기 - 마지막으로, 모든 일들을 일일이 페이스북이나 인스타그램에 드러내지 않기 (p. 31) 라고 합니다. 이를 통해서 우리가 가지게 되는 건 유용한 가면persona 중 하나고요. 가면은 다양할 수록 좋대요. 한 가지 가면만 쓰고 세상을 살아가는 것만큼 어려운 일이 없잖아요. 저만 해도 진지 모드, 긍정에너지오조오억개 모드, 빡겜 모드, 노빠꾸 모드, 옴닉 모드 등 기본 한 5개로 사는 것 같네요. 그리고 새로운 페르소나를 찾아내고 적절하게 활용하는 게 그렇게 즐거울 수가 없더라고요. 아 여튼 이건 다른 이야기고... 몇몇 사람들은 다양한 페르소나를 지니는 걸 낮은 자존감과 연결하여 생각하기도 하는데, 이건 가식도 아니고 위선도 아니에요. 요는 그 다양한 페르소나를 어떻게 사용하느냐지요. 5. 외현적 자존감 vs 내현적 자존감 심화학습으로 넘어가봅시다. 자존감은 한 가지가 아니에요. 크게 외현적 자존감explicit self-esteem과 내현적 자존감implicit self-esteem으로 나뉘어요. 외현적 자존감은 자기선호, 자기수용, 자기가치감 등 겉으로 드러나는 자존감이에요. 타인의 눈에 보이는 자기 모습을 나름대로의 합리적이고 의식적인 수준에서 평가한 결과이고요. 의도적이며 통제 가능한 명시적인 자존감입니다. 내현적 자존감은 비의식적이고 자동적이며 암묵적 수준에 있어요. 좀 더 복잡한 양상을 띱니다. 저자의 정리에 따르면, (pp. 41-42) 첫째, 내현적 자존감은 전의식적preconscious인 특성을 보입니다. 전의식은 프로이트가 제안한 개념으로, 평소엔 잊고 있지만 무의식 수준으로 억압된 건 아니어서 질문이나 단서가 있으면 회상을 통해 의식의 수면 위로 떠올릴 수 있는 것들입니다. 둘째, 자동적이며 연합된 형태를 보입니다. 이것은 굳이 노력을 기울이지 않아도 처리가 되는 자존감으로 몸과 마음에 너무나 익숙해져 통제할 필요나 통제할 기회도 없이 자동적인 수준에서 작동하는 자판기 같은 자존감입니다. 셋째, 내현적 자존감은 빠르게 비언어적 모습을 드러냅니다. 분명하게 말로 설명하기는 어렵지만 자기 자신에 대한 '왠지 모르게 그냥 그런' 생각과 이미지로 나타납니다. 넷째, 내현적 자존감은 본인의 정서와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있습니다. 대부분은 자부심, 죄책감, 모멸감, 수치심, 시기심 등 살명서 문득문득 치받쳐 올라오는 자의식 정서self-conscious emotion와 관련되어 있습니다. 개념적인 수준에서의 뚜렷한 구분과 달리, 현재까지의 뇌영상 연구에서 자존감 전반은 외현과 내현에 상관없이 공통된 뇌 영역에서 처리되는 것처럼 보인대요. 심리적 문제가 없는 정상군을 대상으로 할 때는요. 하지만 자존감 저하를 보이는 임상군을 대상으로 하는 연구들에서는 조금 다른 양상이 관찰된다고 해요. 내현적 자존감이라는 개념의 특성상 자기공명영상을 통해 파악하기에는 방법적인 어려움이 남아있지만, 앞으로 관련 연구가 진행되면 더 잡아낼 수 있겠지요. 그럼 뇌영상 연구가 아니라 임상 연구에서는 어떨까요? 자존감의 종류를 둘로 나누었으니 각각이 높고 낮은 경우에 대해서 도표를 그려볼 수 있어요. 1) 손상된 자존감damaged self-esteem: 외현적 자존감(낮음) + 내현적 자존감(높음) 집단 따돌림이나, 입시 혹은 입사 실패 등과 같은 특정한 이유로 자기가치감에 흠집이 생겨 주눅 들어 있는 경우래요. 자살 충동이 있는 우울증 환자나 신경성 폭식증 환자들 중에 오히려 이런 케이스가 좀 있다네요. 이상적인 자신의 모습을 충족시키지 못하는 절망적인 현실이나 반복되는 실패 앞에서 스스로를 살리기 위한 방어책이자 자구책으로 내현적 자존감을 높인 것으로 보인다 하고요. 이 경우 완벽주의나 정신승리가 자주 나타난대요. ex) '내가 이 정도는 달성해야지', '내가 이 정도 체중은 유지해야지!', '세상의 비난은 내가 더 잘 되기 위한 밑거름이야!' 하지만 과장된 기준은 언제나 넘기 힘든 경우가 대부분이고, 다시 바닥으로 곤두박치는 악순환으로 들어서게 된다 하지요. 2) 취약한 자존감fragile or defensive self-esteem: 외현적 자존감(높음) + 내현적 자존감(낮음) 외상적 경험들이 티가 나지 않도록 그럭저럭 잘 덮고 살아왔으나 오랜 기간 형성된 자동적이고 부정적인 자존감을 어찌할 줄 몰라 사소한 일에도 휘청거리는 경우래요. 어린 시절 주 양육자의 변덕스럽고 일관성 없는 양육 방식 같은 부정적인 인간관계에서 기인하는 경우가 많다 하고요. 특징은 외부의 갑작스러운 위협에 직면하게 되면 자신을 지켜내기 위해 타인을 마구 경멸하고 무시하며 비난하는 겁니다. 이러면서 세상이 자신의 태도에 반응하는 걸 확인하면 외현적 자기애가 다시 높아지고요. 미국의 정신분석학자 오토 컨버그Otto Kernberg는 이렇게 과대한 자기애를 '굶주리고 분노하고 비어있는 자아a hungry, enraged, empty self'에서 벗어나려는 학습된 방어태세라고 설명했대요. 6. 자존감이 높은 것만이 좋은가요 높은 자존감과 낮은 자존감은 제각기 장단점을 지녀요. 자존감이 높으면 타인에게 좋은 첫인상을 주는 것은 맞대요. 하지만 이들의 사회적 관계의 질은 유난히 높지도 않고, 대인관계를 특별히 오래 유지하는 경향성이 있는 것도 아니라 합니다. 지나치게 자기중심적 태도 때문에 고립되기 일쑤이고, 세상에 대한 자신의 통제력을 과신하여 위험한 행동을 실행한 후 그 여파를 경시하고요. 자존감이 낮으면 세상의 변화와 피드백에 예민하기에 큰 실수가 적습니다. 또한 자존감이 높은 사람에 비해 스스로가 '인지'하는 부족함을 채우기 위해 부단히, 부산하게 여러 노력을 기울이고요. 물론 앞서 언급했듯이 낮은 자존감이 일으키는 여러 문제가 있어요. 하지만 다른 사람의 시선을 적당히 의식하는 것을 낮은 자존감의 발로라 괴로워하고, 다른 사람의 시선을 전혀 의식하지 않는 것을 높은 자존감의 발로라 자신만만해 할 필요는 없습니다. 사람이 아무일도 하지 않고 가만히 쉬고 있을 때 뇌의 기능적인 상태를 자기공명영상MRI 스캐너로 살핀 후 뇌가 어떤 식으로 연결되어 있는지(뇌의 휴지기 기능적 연걸성resting-state functional connectivity)를 확인했을 때, 대부분 뇌 내에서는 다양한 연결성 패턴이 관찰되었대요. 뇌는 한시도 쉬지 않고 작동한다는 뜻이에요. 그 중 특별히 '깨어 있으면서도 아무 일 없이 쉬고 있음'과 관련된 네트워크를 '디폴트 모드 네트워크default mode network; DMN'이라고 하네요. 근데 이 디폴트 모드 네트워크는 자의식이나 자기 개념 같은 자기참조적self-referential 정보 처리 영역과 겹치고, 타인의 마음이 이럴 것이라고 짐작하는mentalisation / theory of mind 사회적 상호작용 처리 영역과도 겹친대요. 결론적으로 우리는 가만히 누워있을 때도, 자기와 타인에 대한 정보를 처리하는 뇌 영역만큼은 좀처럼 쉬게 하질 못한다는 거예요. 나를 의식하고, 타인을 의식하는 이거 어디서 많이 보지 않았나요? 그래요 우리가 낮은 자존감의 발로라 생각하는 모습들이 사실은 모두가 공유하는 자연스러운 모습이라는 것이지요. 이불킥은 패시브입니다. 아닌 척하며 사는 거지유  이불킥도 잘 팔면 돈이 됩니다. 그래서 어떤 학자들은 이 디폴트 모드 네트워크를 프로이트적 관점의 에고(ego)라 해석하기도 합니다. 에고는 환경적인 압력과 실제 여건을 고려한 현실 원칙reality principle에 바탕을 두고 합리적 선택을 하려는 자아이지요. 그럼 어느 정도가 되면 자신과 타인을 의식하는 행태가 문제가 되냐 하면, 저자는 "우리를 괴롭히는 생각과 불필요한 신념들을 인정받기 위해 타인을 자꾸만 시험에 들게 하는"(p. 67) 지점에서는 멈추라고 하네요. 자신의 존재감, 중요성, 진심에 과도한 의미를 부여하면서 자의식에 매몰될 필요는 없다고요. 그 정도가 아니라면 외부의 시선을 의식하고 자신이 타인에게 어떻게 보이는지에 관심을 기울이는 건 자연스러운 마음으로 받아들이라는 겁니다. 왜냐면 이런 마음들이 "우리가 현실을 넘어서서 함부로 달려나가지 못하게끔 단단히 붙잡아"(p. 69) 주고, "환경과 나와 타인 그리고 나의 의식과 전의식과 무의식이, 그럭저럭 만족하며 지낼 수 있도록 살펴주는 안전망"(p. 69) 이니까요. // 더 재미있는 이야기들이 많지만 나머지는 책을 구매해서 보시기를 추천합니다. 점심 맛있게 드시고 달달구리 + 향 좋은 차로 스스로를 행복하게 해주시기를!
