Ethnologue라는 사이트가 있습니다. 이 사이트는 전 세계 228개국, 6,700개 정도의 언어들을 분류해서 목록을 만들어 놓은 곳입니다. 순수 언어학, 응용 언어학, 사회 언어학 등을 연구하는 학자들이 유용하게 이용하고 있는 사이트라고 알고 있습니다. 이 사이트는 당연히 한국에 대한 언어도 분석을 해놓고 있는데 Ethnologue에 따르면 한국에는 현재 3개의 언어가 존재하는 것으로 보고 있습니다. 일단 한국어가 하나이고요, 그 다음이 수화(sign language)입니다. 말로 발화되는 것만 언어라고 볼 수는 없고 의사소통을 가능하게 하는 모든 수단을 언어라고 본다면 수화도 당연히 언어가 되겠지요.  Ethnologue 사이트의 한국 분석...맨 밑 Language Counts 라는 항목을 보면 3이라는 숫자가 보인다...그리고 그 항목 맨 마지막 문구..."1 is dying"... 그런데 재미있는 것은 그럼 한국에서 사용되는 나머지 한 언어는 과연 무엇이냐 하는 것인데 Ethnologue 사이트는 바로 그 언어를 제주어라고 보고 있습니다. 즉, 여기서는 제주어를 한국어의 하위 개념이 아니라 한국어와는 같은 뿌리에서 나온 형제어 정도의 개념으로 보고 있는 것입니다. 제가 관련 지식이 깊지는 않아서 어떤 기준으로 이렇게 분류해 놓았는지는 설명드릴 수 없는데 아무튼 이렇게 분류해 놓았습니다. 본토의 다른 방언들, 예를 들어 전라도 방언이나 경상도 방언 등은 별도의 언어로 분류해 놓지 않았지만 제주어 만큼은 별도의 언어라고 분류해 놓은 것입니다. 하긴 의사소통의 관점에서 봤을 때 육지에서 온 분들이 제주어를 접하게 되면 다른 지역의 방언들과는 달리 유독 말을 알아듣는 데 많은 어려움을 겪는 사실로 미루어 보면 위와 같은 분류가 타당한 것 같기도 합니다.  3개의 언어를 구체적으로 보면 제주어(Jejueo), 한국어(Korean), 한국어 수화(Korean Sign Language)로 구분되어 있고 제주어의 상태는 8a(Moribund)이다... 그런데 현재 제주말의 상태는 이 사이트에서 8a로 분류되어 있습니다. 이 8a 등급은 한 마디로 “죽어가고 있는(dying)” 말이라는 것입니다. 이 정도의 등급이면 “(해당 언어를) 유창하게 사용하는 언어 집단이 이미 아이를 낳을 수 있는 세대보다 더 윗세대들이고 언어를 사용하고 있는 지역(여기서는 제주도) 자체의 힘으로는 해당 언어를 되살리기에는 이미 늦었으며 (제주도)밖에서 어떤 개입이 필요한 단계”를 의미한다고 합니다.  한국에서 사용되는 3가지 언어의 상태...맨 오른쪽 제주어는 8a 등급으로 표시되어 있다... 그런데 제주도 토박이로서 위의 진단에 정말 동의하는 게 요즘은 제주도에서 태어난 어린 학생들도 제주말을 거의 잘 사용하지 않고 많이 표준어화 된 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 제 딸의 경우 아주 어렸을 때 제주로 와서 어린이집, 유치원, 초등학교를 모두 여기서 다니고 있지만 친구들하고 대화하는 것을 가만히 들어보면 제주어는 거의 쓰지를 않습니다. 40대인 저도 사실 아주 나이가 많은 어르신들의 진짜배기 제주어는 알아듣기 어려울 때가 가끔 있는데 지금 제 자식 세대는 거의 어르신 세대와 소통에 어려움이 상당할 정도의 수준까지 온 것 같습니다. 다른 지역, 예를 들어 경상도나 전라도에서도 이런 현상이 많이 발생하고 있는지는 모르겠지만 제 생각으로 앞으로 이런 추세가 한 두 세대만 더 진행되면 제주어는 완전히 소멸될 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 안 그래도 지역 특성상 본토에서 유입되는 인구들도 점점 늘어나고 있고 해외 관광객들도 많아지는 추세를 감안한다면 “제주어를 살려야 되냐 말아야 되냐”라는 당위를 떠나서 이제 제주어를 들을 수 있는 시간도 얼마 많이 남지 않은 것 같다는 생각을 해보게 됩니다.
