https://new.redtea.kr/?b=31&n=217566 인간에게 시간은 일종의 흐름이다. 시간이라는 물이 상류에서 하류, 즉 과거에서 미래로 흘러갈 때 ‘현재’라는 강변에 서서 흐름에 동화된다. 그리고 강변에서 삽질 같은 행동을 통해 물줄기를 바꿔나가려고 한다. 이런 ‘삽질’은 다양한 모습으로 나타난다. 학생들이 청춘을 바쳐 열심히 공부하고 미래의 잔병치례를 피하고자 열심히 운동한다. 하지만 만약 미래를 알아버린다면 사람들의 행동은 변화할 것이다. 이는 <콘택트(Arrival)>의 주인공 뱅크스 박사의 모습으로 나타난다. 사실 <콘택트(Arrival)>는 외계인의 도착에 따른 국가 간의 소통, 인류-외계인과의 소통이 주요 내용이다. 주인공 뱅크스 박사의 등장으로 진전되는 외계인과의 소통, 국제적 이해관계의 충돌에 의한 소통의 단절, 사익에 따라 폭약을 설치하는 미지의 단체 등으로 외계인의 등장으로 인한 변화와 갈등의 모습이 빈번하게 등장한다. 여기서 외계인이 쓰는 헵타포드어는 이야기 진행을 위한 소재이자 문제 해결을 위한 도구이다. 하지만 뱅크스 박사의 모습을 통해서 미래를 안다는 것의 딜레마가 나타난다. 박사는 외계인과 만남을 통해 헵타포드어를 익히고 ‘언어가 개인의 사고와 생각에 영향을 미친다.’는 사피어-워프 가설처럼 외계인의 원형적 시간관념에 동화된다. 인간의 선형적 시간관념과 외계인의 원형적 시간관념의 차이는 글자에서 오롯이 드러나는데 인류의 문자는 수평이든 수직이든 일정한 방향으로 작성되어 그 규칙에 따라서 읽어야만 이해할 수 있지만 헵타포드어는 원형적으로 작성되어 어느 지점에서 어느 방향으로 읽든 같은 의미를 나타낸다. 외계인이 3000년 뒤에 도움을 받기 위해서 지금 선물을 주려 왔다는 말로 대표되는 그들의 시간관념은 이해하기 힘들고 불합리하게 느껴진다. 하지만 이런 시간관념을 가진 유일한 인류인 뱅크스 박사는 영화의 마지막 장면에서 미래를 받아들이는 모습을 보여준다. 외계인이 떠난 이후(현재)와 결혼 후, 출산 후의 장면이 교차하면서 현재에서는 이안 박사가 결혼을 암시하는 말을 하고 미래에서 딸과 지내는 모습이 보인 후 결혼 후의 장면에서 아이를 낳자는 말을 승낙한다. 다시 현재로 돌아와 미래 남편의 품에 안긴다. 마치 고대 그리스 신화에서 오디세우스가 신탁에 예언된 대로 20년을 표류한 것처럼 뱅크스 박사도 미래의 파국을 알고서도 순응한 것이다. 이런 결말은 쉽게 받아들이기 힘들지만 또한 이런 선택이 필연적인 것처럼 그려지지는 않는다. 뱅크스 박사는 미래가 정해져 있더라고 그사이 순간이 가치가 있기에 같은 경로를 다시 나아가기로 결정했다. 이는 역설적으로 인간의 힘으로 정해진 미래를 바꿀 수 있다는 생각을 하게 만든다. 눈에 보이는 장벽이 더 쉬운 것처럼 현대사회의 여러 제약이 미래 모습이라는 구체적인 장벽으로 나타날 때 더더욱 인간의 자유의지가 빛이 나고 한계를 벗어나는 몇몇이 세상을 바꿔나갈 것이다. 이런 이유로 외계인이 헵타포드어를 ‘선물’이라고 말한 것이 아니겠느냐 다시 한번 생각해본다. 역시 글쓸때마다 느끼지만 뭔가 제 손에서 벗어나갑니다.. 원래는 회귀나 다른 작품들과 비교하면서 과연 미래는 불변한가로 쓰려고 했는데.. 사실 학교 숙제에요(소곤소곤) Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 2 이 게시판에 등록된 한겨울님의 최근 게시물 |
