1. 어원 - [패스트볼]의 원어는 [Fastball]입니다. 직역하면 [빠른 공]이 됩니다. 그러나 다들 아시다시피 이 구종은 [직구]로 번역되는 경우가 훨씬 많습니다. - [직구]는 일본을 통해 수입된 단어라는 게 통설입니다. 일본에서는 이 공을 [ストレ―ト], 즉 [스트레이트]라고 합니다. 직선으로 쭉 뻗어 들어오는 공이라는 의미입니다. 그래서 같은 의미를 살려서 [まっすぐ], [맛스구]라고도 합니다. '똑바로'라는 뜻의 일본어입니다. - 하지만 패스트볼이 실제로 직선 경로로 들어오는 경우는 거의 없습니다. 공이 회전하면서 직선운동을 하기 때문에, 공기 저항에 의해 상하좌우로 경로가 변하게 됩니다. 그나마 요즘에는 이런 사실이 팬들 사이에 많이 알려졌습니다. - 그래서 [패스트볼]을 [직구]라고 부르는 게 어폐라는 주장이 계속해서 나왔습니다. 직선으로 오는 공이 아니니까요. 대신에 원어 그대로 [패스트볼]이나 [빠른 공], [속구]란 단어를 정착시키려는 시도가 계속 있지만 잘 정착되진 않았습니다. 2. 종류 - 그런데 요즘 메이저리그를 보면 패스트볼이 한 종류가 아닙니다. 넓게 보면 한 5가지 종류가 [패스트볼]의 범주에 속합니다. - 공을 잡는 방법으로 나누면 [포심 패스트볼]과 [투심 패스트볼]이 있습니다. 전자는 흔히 말하는 [직구]입니다. 그런데 후자는 대놓고 직구이기를 거부하며 휘어지는 공입니다. 하지만 [패스트볼]답게 빠른 구종입니다. - 최근 한국 야구에서도 많이 보이는 [커터]와 [싱커]도 패스트볼의 직계에 속합니다. [컷 패스트볼], [싱킹 패스트볼]이라고 부르기도 합니다. 커터는 패스트볼과 슬라이더의 중간에 속합니다. 싱커는 궤적 끝에서 살짝 땅으로 가라앉습니다. - [싱커]와 [투심]은 너무 비슷해서 다른 구종으로 분류해야 할 필요성이 의심될 지경입니다. 요즘엔 구속의 차이도 거의 없어요. - [스플리터]도 넓게 봤을 때 패스트볼의 한 계통입니다. 포크볼의 사촌입니다. 사실 처음 나왔을 때부터 이름이 [스플릿 핑거 패스트볼]이었습니다. 손가락 벌리고 던지는 패스트볼이란 뜻이지요. 벌렸죠? - 그렇습니다. 포심, 투심, 커터, 싱커, 스플리터... 다 넓게 봤을 때 [패스트볼]입니다. 3. 제구 - 패스트볼의 특징은 뭐니뭐니해도 [가장 빠른 공]이라는 겁니다. 그리고 투수가 가장 많이 던지는 공입니다(너클볼러는 제외). - 제일 많이 던지는 이유는 의외로 싱겁습니다. 컨트롤하기 제일 쉽기 때문입니다. 제 생각에 이거 모르는 팬들이 꽤 될 겁니다. - 아 물론 빨라서 타자가 대처하기 어렵다는 점도 있습니다. 하지만 제일 큰 이유는 아닙니다. 사실 프로 1군에 뛸 정도면 어지간한 빠른 공은 한가운데로 오면 다 칠 수 있습니다. 예전에 추신수 선수가 명언 하나 했지요. [시속 95마일짜리 직구를 못치면 밥값 못한 기분이 든다]라고. - 투수가 못하면 팬들이 가끔씩 한마디 합니다. 변화구 좀 섞어서 던지라고요. 지금은 아니지만 예전엔 그런 말 보면 좀 답답했습니다. 야구가 게임도 아니고 말이죠. - 못 던지는 이유도 간단합니다. 컨트롤이 안되니까요. 류현진이 체인지업을 많이 던지는 건 그만큼 제구가 잘 되는 구종이기 때문입니다. 커브를 적게 던지는 건 반대로 제구가 잘 안돼서 입니다. - 한복판에 몰린 패스트볼은 타자의 연봉상승 촉매제입니다. 하지만 알면서도 패스트볼을 던지는 건, 변화구를 던질 때보다 그렇게 몰릴 확률이 적어서입니다. 누군들 한가운데다 던지고 싶겠어요? - 유희관이 시속 130km짜리 패스트볼로 먹고 사는 건 그만큼 컨트롤을 잘하기 때문입니다. 4. 조화 - 패스트볼을 살리는 건 첫째로 컨트롤입니다. 패스트볼의 컨트롤. 둘째로 변화구입니다. - 야구 최초의 변화구, [커브]가 등장한 이래 패스트볼과 느린 변화구의 조합은 밥과 김치찌개의 조합만큼 찰떡궁합이자 정석적인 공략법이 됐습니다. - 네놈의 공격 패턴! 강약약 강강강약 강중약! 알아내도 결과는 헛스윙 삼진입니다. 인생이 원래 그래요. - 반대로 변화구를 살리는 것도 [패스트볼]입니다. 주구장창 변화구 던져도 안 속아요. - 보리, 쌀, 보리보리보리 쌀쌀쌀! 만고의 진리입니다. 5. 양단 - 패스트볼만큼 사기치기 좋은 구종도 없습니다. 허를 찌르는 몸쪽 공, 타자를 우롱하는 높은 공, 바깥쪽 퇴근 존에 걸리는 꽉찬 공... - 이게 다 컨트롤이 되서 그렇습니다. 대류... 컨트롤이 최고다. - 반면 컨트롤이 안되고 받쳐주는 변화구가 없으면 타자에게 제일 쉬운 먹잇감입니다. - 한국인의 주식은 밥입니다. 살면서 밥 싫어하는 한국인 못 봤습니다. 마찬가지로 패스트볼 싫어하는 타자 없습니다. 6. 타이밍 - 물론 어지간히 빠른 공은 치기도 어렵습니다. 근데 프로 수준 가면 공 보고 치는게 아니고 눈감고 휘두르는 수준입니다. 레알. - 정확히는, 선수들의 증언(?)에 따르면 처음 공이 나오는 궤적을 보고 대충 타이밍, 예상 도착점을 그리고 휘두르는 거라고 합니다. - 중요한 건 타이밍입니다. 막 미친듯이 라이징 라이징징 하지 않는 이상 궤도는 대충 맞는다 해도 타이밍이 안 맞으면 파울이나 헛스윙입니다. - 여하튼 패스트볼은 타이밍이 중요합니다. 그래서 투수들도 타자들의 메트로놈을 망가트리려고 무진 애를 씁니다. 변화구도 던지고, 타임도 요청하고, 일부러 느리게도 던져보고... 7. 공포 - 패스트볼의 또 다른 무기는 [공포심]입니다. 공기를 가르면서 날아오는 공은 상상외로 두려운 존재입니다. - 아까 패스트볼을 제일 많이 쓰는 게 컨트롤 때문이라고 했는데 죄송. 공포심도 그 이유에 한몫 합니다. - 머리 쪽으로 날아온 공에 맞아본 경험이 있는 사람은 한동안 [트라우마]에 시달리게 됩니다. 생각보다 벗어나기 많이 힘듭니다. 몸쪽에 맞는 것도 비슷하게 아픕니다. - 그래서 똑똑하고도 야비한 투수들이 이 공포심을 많이 써먹었다고 합니다. - 약쟁이가 되긴 했지만 성적만은 세계최강이었던 로저 클레멘스가 그 중 한 명입니다. 별명이 [헤드헌터]였습니다. 무지막지하게 몸쪽 공을 쏴댔다고. - 돈 드라이스데일이란 전설적인 투수가 있습니다. 4번에 대해서 ;-) 선발투수에게 요구하는 구종이 보통 3가지입니다만, 하나는 속구고, 나머지 두개가 문젠데. 보통 우투수 기준으로 좌타자용 하나, 우타자용 하나 그렇게 해서 사실상 2피치가 됩니다.
우리나라 투수들 기준으로 직구 슬라이더가 우타자용, 직구 써체가 좌타자용 레파토리가 되는거죠.
이유야 뭐 휘어져 들어오는게 눈에 뻔히 들어오면 치기 쉬워서이고, 바깥쪽으로 공이 달아나든지, 아니면 종으로 크게 떨어져야 타자가 치기 어려워서이지 않나 싶네요\';
