10년 전, 제가 사람을 둘이나 죽였습니다. 아니... 정확히 말하면 제가 [그 사람들을 죽게 내버려 둔 것]과 다름 없습니다. 그 중 한 친구와 관련된 사건은 [오늘로부터 정확하게 10년 전에 일어난 일]입니다. 이 사건과 관련된 뉴스 및 기사는 밑의 링크를 참고하시면 됩니다. http://mbn.mk.co.kr/pages/news/newsView.php?news_seq_no=274930 http://imnews.imbc.com/replay/2007/nwtoday/article/2084975_13349.html http://www.nocutnews.co.kr/news/365132 사건 당일 그 친구는 제 부사수였습니다. 사격훈련장에서 함께 훈련병들의 탄피회수 임무를 맡았습니다. 제가 사수로서 그를 관리하지 못한 책임이 가장 큽니다... 제가 조금만 신경을 썼다면 이 사고는 일어나지 않았을 겁니다. 이 사고로 중대의 많은 병사들이 관련되어 영창을 갔지만, 저는 가지 못 했습니다. 헌병대에서는 저는 책임이 없다고 판단한 것 같았습니다. 분명 저의 잘못이 가장 큰데도 말입니다... 저는 죄를 지었지만, 결국 죄값을 치루지 못하고 전역했습니다. 이 사건 이후 전역을 하고도, 당시에 그 친구가 죽어가던 모습을 한 3~4년 정도 꿈에서 계속 보았습니다... 저는 그것이 저의 죄값을 치루는 것이라 생각하여 그 고통을 덤덤하게 받아드렸습니다. 4년 정도 지나고 나니 그제서야 고통이 조금씩 무뎌지기 시작하더군요. (저는 백지영의 [총 맞은 것처럼]이라는 노래를 정말 극도로 싫어합니다. 이 노래를 처음 들었을 때는, 과연 [작사가는 본인이 직접 총에 맞아봤는지, 혹은 다른 사람이 총에 맞는 것을 직접 목격이라도 한 것인지] 되묻고 싶을 만큼 화가 났었습니다. 그 이후, 제가 있는 곳에 이 노래가 나오면 그 자리를 피해 다른 곳으로 도망가게 되었습니다.) 이 사고가 나기 [3개월 전]에도 제 책임으로 인한 [비슷한 사고]가 났었습니다. 다른 교육중대의 조교 한 녀석이 7월에 보급창고에서 스스로 삶을 끊었거든요... 그 녀석은 훈련을 제가 있던 교육중대에서 받았던 녀석이라 그 녀석의 훈련병 시절 때 부터 저와 친분이 있었습니다. 이 녀석의 사고가 나기 며칠 전, 녀석이 저에게 상담 좀 해주실 수 있냐고 그랬습니다. 그래서 저는 지금은 좀 바쁜 시기니까 바쁜게 지나가면 얘기하자고 했었습니다. 그리고는 며칠 뒤 그 녀석이 그렇게 되었죠... 만약 제가 바쁜 와중에도 그 녀석의 이야기를 들어주었더라면... 어쩌면 이 때의 사고가 없었다면, 3개월 뒤의 사고도 없었을 것이라 생각합니다. 이 때의 사고로 죄를 지었기때문에, 3개월 뒤의 사고까지 함께 쳐서 천벌을 받고 있는 것 인지도 모릅니다. 저 때문에 둘이나 세상을 떠났습니다... 하지만, 지난 10년 동안 한 번도 이들의 묘(혹은 납골당일 수도 있겠죠)를 찾아가 본 적이 없습니다... 그러니까 저는 아직도 이들에게 사죄를 구하지 못했습니다. 너무나 미안했기에 더더욱 그럴 수 없었기도 했습니다. 묘는 찾아가지 못했지만, 10년이 지난 지금 이렇게 글로서라도 그들에게 용서를 구하고 싶습니다. 얘들아, 지켜주지 못해서 미안하다... 질문은 시간이 날 때마다 틈틈이 답변을 달도록 하겠습니다.
