조선일보는 참 인턴을 많이 뽑는데요, 매년 20~30명씩 두 번씩 인턴을 뽑으니 기자 준비하는 사람들은 어지간하면 한 번쯤은 지원해보고 또 많이들 경험해보는 그런... 곳입니다. 막 엄청 특별할 건 없다는 얘기죠. 하다보면서 놀란 점이 몇 가지 있는데 1. 편집국이 한국 그 어떤 신문사 편집국을 가져다 둬도 압승할 정도로 완벽 그 자체. - 진짜 놀랐는데 조선일보라는 고루한 느낌의 편집국, 꽉 막힌 답답한 느낌의 편집국을 생각했는데... 웬걸 너무 탁 트여 있고 거의 무슨 워싱턴 포스트나 뉴욕 타임즈 편집국을 그대로 옮겨온 듯한 혁신적인 느낌을 받았습니다. 아니 이렇게 혁신적이고 깔끔한 공간에서 그런... 기사가? 2. 생각보다 정체성 혼란을 느끼는 기자들이 많음 - 뭐 어디 가나 데스크와 현장의 알력다툼은 있다지만 여기는 유독 심한 느낌. 조선일보에는 '그런 기자'만 있는 거 아냐? 라고 생각했지만 딱히 그렇지도 않다는 걸 깨달았음. 하지만 데스크에는 정말 '그런 사람'들만 올라갈 수 있는 느낌. 오히려 현장 기자들은 되게 편견없고 조선일보답지 않은 점이 많았다고 느낌. 3. 업계 최고 자부심 - 솔직히 이제 언론 1등이 조선일보는 아니라 생각하고, 그래도 신문 1등 정도는 조선이 맞다고 생각하긴 하지만... 그렇다고 해도 업계 최고라는 자부심을 굉장히 강조합니다. 페이를 건너듣기로는 완전 업계 최고와는 거리가 좀 있다고 들었는데(방송 포함) 그래도 신문 중에서는 많이 주는 편에 속할겁니다. 아마 1등? 4. 놀라울 정도의 경쟁 - 보통 언론들은 내부 경쟁을 아주 심하게 하지는 않는데, 조선은 내부에서도 경쟁을 엄청 심하게 붙이더라구요. 이건 나중에 실제 입사한 인턴 동기와 술마시다가 들은 내용. 결국 최고 수준의 실력이 없으면 이직하거나 업계를 떠나거나 하는 일이 잦다고 들었습니다. 2달밖에 안 하는데도 인턴을 마치 사골육수 빼먹듯이 굴리는 걸 보면서, 여기 들어가면 진짜 큰일나는거아냐? 싶었는데 나중에 공채로 뽑힌 사람들이 증언하기로는 인턴은 맛맛맛보기에 불과했다고. 5. 명문대 좋아함 - 팩트임 그런데도 인턴 2달 해보고 기자는 내 일이 아닌 것 같다며 이 판을 뜨는 동기들도 참 많았습니다. 거기 적응해서 조선일보 간 친구들도 여럿 있었지만. 저도 아 이건 아닌것 같은데... 싶어서 업종을 바꿨지만, 그래도 그 때 동기들하고 인턴 마치고 먹었던 술은 살짝 그립기도 하네요. http://m.journalist.or.kr/m/m_article.html?no=37175 이런 기사도 있는데 조선은 확실히 체계적으로 운용하는 듯 싶더라구요. 기자를 경험해보기에는 가장 완벽한 인턴이 아닌가 생각합니다. 힘들긴 하지만 - 나중에 지울 수도 있습니다- 아 그래서 질문은 다양하게 받습니다. 조선일보 대해서 물어보셔도 되고 언론 관련해서 물어보셔도 되고 다 됩니다. - 개인적으로 지켜본 바로 근래 20년간 언론 전반의 수준이 답보하거나 퇴보하는 느낌이지만, 대신 퀄리티 상위 10%끼리만 비교하면 예전보다 수준이 확 높아진 느낌입니다. 특히 연재 및 특종 기사들. 문제의식, 취재 및 분석능력, 해결방안 모두 우수한 기사가 많아요. 조선일보 인턴 경험에 비추어봤을 때, 어떻게 이런 좋은 기사들이 나올 수 있었을까요?
